Whilst the 'public areas' downstairs were fairly well maintained, on the first evening the dining room at the rear was used as a corridor between the kitchen/bar and outside courtyard, by both staff and customers, with the door frequently being left wide open - not particularly what you want on an October evening. However, the guest accommodation upstairs felt rather tired and unloved, eg broken toilet roll holder in our bathroom and unable to get much hot water out of the shower at 6pm on a Friday afternoon. We noted from a planning application displayed outside that the building is to be renovated, which might explain its current condition. Unfortunately our room was directly above the kitchen extractor unit, so noisy during the hours food was being prepared (from 06:45 until after 22:00, though presume it may have been turned off between breakfast and lunch service). Biggest issue for me was being unable to get to sleep until 2am on our first night due to the noise of maintenance work evidently being carried out above and/or adjacent to our room, until at least 01:45. Although I considered this totally unreasonable in premises offering guest accommodation I did not query it, in the hope that an explanation (and even possibly an apology) would be provided by management - but it was not. Food overall was good, but my wife was disappointed with the overcooked poached eggs served with breakfast. But perhaps my expectations were too high given the price charged?

John and the staff were pleasant and helpful. The room was quite dated and could do with a refresh, although the bed was quite comfortable. Dinner was good, as was dessert. The "Signature bacon sandwich" was a big letdown though, two small rashers on toasted bloomer which just crumbled to bits.

Although the staff we friendly and helpful the particular room I stayed in especially the bathroom could do with an immediate complete overall. I can't comment on the food as I did not eat there. Parking area can take maximum of 8 vehicles for both customers and residents so you have to find a road space where you can find one In my opinion the price charged is exorbitant for a one night stay. I will not be returning

Really lovely hotel, stayed in a superior room and it was really nice, it was a little bit tired but the room was so interesting and historical with gorgeous window seats and fireplace and solid wood floors and a lovely big shower in the bathroom that it just felt really comfortable and relaxing. The food at breakfast was great, with a good selection, the only downside was the staff on breakfast service as they weren't around much and I had to go hunt for them a couple of times! This wasn't the norm though as the evening staff were very helpful.
