Beautiful hotel room and the bar is stunning! But if you have a room overlooking the high street expect some noise especially on a Saturday night. This didn’t impact us as we were up late anyway.

Nice hotel. No lift and most rooms on the second floor. Steep staircase. An accident waiting to happen. No air conditioning also. In 2024 at the prices for this hotel it is poor no to have a modern air conditioning units as standard.

All aspects very good except; Car parking terrible(no spaces) and cost £9.50 a day. Insufficient staff in bar, so takes 30 minutes to get served.

Great rooms and facilities. Loved the decor. Pretty unique. Good choice for breakfast (English and continental). Very clean. Central position (shops/restaurants/castle/ other local tourist attractions). I would definitely book this hotel again if i was visiting Colchester again. The only negative is the small parking (limited spaces) behind the hotel which is public. You have to pay extra (just under £10 for 24 hour) and can't pre-book it.

Staff were very good. The carpark took some finding. Do your homework. Not the hotels fault, council have blocked most access roads with bollards.

The hotel was totally unsuitable. The pictures are far too flattering and hide a number of improtantbissues such as steep dangerous stairs.

Room was modern and clean. TV fitted to the wall in slightly odd position. Food service stopped at 8:30pm and the numerous instructions re parking didn't seem to make parking any easier, ended up with long walk up the hill to hotel and £10+ spent on parking.

Stayed for one night and had a great experience overall. The hotel has an impressive reception area, along with a stylish bar and restaurant. The room was very spacious and spotless. The corridor could get a bit noisy at times with guests returning from nights out, but that’s to be expected. We stayed during a heatwave, so air conditioning would’ve been a bonus, but it wasn’t a major issue.

It’s was and is a great hotel. Very clean great friendly staff and great location. My only qualm was I was in room 310 it’s in the eves of the building and the stairs are narrow and steep. If I was carry more than a few extra pounds or a big bag or suitcase I’d have struggled. As it was after a few wines I went up with great care. Beware of room 310 bonus was its huge.

Lovely hotel. We stayed only for one night but the room was lovely and cosy, beautiful old beams but clean and modern bathroom as well. Bed was super comfy. Didn't stay for breakfast as was a flying visit but it was reasonably priced (£12) so would try it if we stay again! A little noisy in the morning as you can hear doors slamming but nothing that bothered us, no noise at night that we heard! We also had a few pints in the pub in the evening which was lovely, didn't eat there but the food looked great! Parking was £12 behind the hotel for 24 hours, not that easy to find but safe when you get there. Overall, would recommend.

Excellent stay again. Staff very friendly. Lovely food. The hotel was really busy as they had two weddings during our stay. The cleanliness however was not up to its previous standard.

What a fantastic Hotel , with great decor , ideally positioned in the heart of Colchester , great staff and delicious breakfast .. only criticism was that I had a sleepless night , Due to an issue with the toilet in our room that meant the water was constantly noisily running into the toilet and couldn’t be used , I mentioned this to a staff member who said it was usually an easy fix by pressing the flusher a few times ( which would indicate it’s an ongoing issue with the toilets ) and when she tried this and it didn’t work I was told that maintenance would have to look at it on Monday .. not much use to me when I only stayed on the Saturday night ! So having a sleepless night took the shine off an otherwise great Hotel

Excellently situated on the high street. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The room and facilities were ideal. My only criticism of the room is that the lighting could have been better. There were lots of lamps but they did not give enough light.

Double glazing is needed at the front of the property. I realise this is probably a listed building but extra sliding glass could be fitted. It was so noisy outside that even wearing ear plugs I got very little sleep.

Great one night stay in a suite (free upgrade which was nice). Rooms lovely and clean. Breakfast was nice although coffee wasn’t great. The coffee in the room was lovely though. Really nice shampoo etc but the sachets aren’t very user friendly - would prefer refillable pumps to keep it eco friendly. Friendly staff on the reception desk. There is noise from outside crowds at night if staying in a front of hotel room but it wasn’t so bad that I wouldn’t stay again. Really enjoyed our stay.

Beautiful hotel. The rooms have been upgraded to a very high standard. Very tasteful. Only negative is that the walls are very thin so we could hear conversations next door but because of the age of the building that’s to be expected.

It is a beautiful hotel, food is great and the people that work there are very nice, We have the fortune to have a room with air conditioning, so if you go on summer time make sure you ask for one.

In my opinion, The George has seriously gone down hill. Very poor service. Breakfast average. If you are a smoker, you now have to go outside the front of hotel, they have stopped it in their garden area. I woke in night. Went down. Night porters kissing and socialising up with young girls. I was told to go outside in street for ciggie and the door was shut and locked. Dogends everywhere, broken glass and was approached by many drunks. Pouring with rain and nowhere to sit. Took cups from room in morning down with coffee and staff in diner refused to take them at breakfast, we were told to take them back to room. Staff very miserable and quite rude. Room ok and bed comfortable, but teo hairdryers in room, none worked. Called reception to change and no answer twice. Had to go down to get replacement ourselves and they said they were Breakfast average, not hot and too busy to answer phone, but they knew we called.

Excellent room and meal in the restaurant. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was extremely busy with Christmas parties which meant we weren’t able to find a seat for a drink. Apart from this, the hotel didn’t disappoint.

Lovely old property, lots of character and charm. Staff are friendly and welcoming, some I feel are under pressure from senior management, It feels like they are short staffed. Which adds pressure to the rest. But they cope with a smile. Be nice to see more staff which would definitely increase the customer experience and enjoyment. Word of mouth is the biggest compliment to any business. Thank you to all the staff on the front line.

Lovely old property, lots of character and charm. Staff are friendly and welcoming, some I feel are under pressure from senior management, It feels like they are short staffed. Which adds pressure to the rest. But they cope with a smile. Be nice to see more staff which would definitely increase the customer experience and enjoyment. Word of mouth is the biggest compliment to any business. Thank you to all the staff on the front line.

Lovely room Well equipped and comfortable My stay was short because of my schedule, but if I am in the area again I would choose to stay at the same place Parking is a public lot right behind the hotel Hotel is right in the centre of town Staff were very helpful over the phone and gave instructions and useful information which assisted me getting where I needed to be in time

Excellent stay again. Staff very friendly. Lovely food. The hotel was really busy as they had two weddings during our stay. The cleanliness however was not up to its previous standard.

Check in check out was excellent. Room clean and warm. Overall a good stay. One issue. It was NYE. We were meeting other hotel guests in the bar before going elsewhere for dinner and to another venue for the NYE celebrations. Your bar staff were abrupt to the point of rudeness in telling us that we had to drink up and leave by 1700. Other patrons were unceremoniously herded out. As we were all guests, we objected and the bar manager slapped down paper coffee cups and ordered us to decant our drinks into them so they could wash our glasses for the evening. We refused and left once we had finished. The drinks are extortionately priced as though you are in London not Colchester. We should have been left alone to enjoy them. Your staff need better people skills. It left a bad impression.

Double glazing is needed at the front of the property. I realise this is probably a listed building but extra sliding glass could be fitted. It was so noisy outside that even wearing ear plugs I got very little sleep.

Beautiful hotel room and the bar is stunning! But if you have a room overlooking the high street expect some noise especially on a Saturday night. This didn’t impact us as we were up late anyway.

Didn’t have the greatest stay here. We upgraded to a suite and expected a bit more for what we had paid- it was a treat for us but didn’t really feel that special. We upgraded to a suite, which was great space, but was cold, felt unused and unloved. No shampoo/shower gel in the freezing cold bathroom. Understandably an old building- but the windows have no insulation or sound proofing and being on the high street this needs to be improved for warmth and noise pollution. So a noisy and cold room. Reception did try to improve the heat when we went out. Breakfast in the morning was dreadful. Service and standards were very poor. Tea and coffee but no cups, having to ask for cups, then milk, not given menus but asking what we wanted to order- then no cutlery and things missing off of the plate. Just all in all a very disappointing experience here- and not a cheap stay. Maybe staying at the back of the hotel would improve the noise early in the morning for future guests but it’s not somewhere I would recommend to friends

Room was modern and clean. TV fitted to the wall in slightly odd position. Food service stopped at 8:30pm and the numerous instructions re parking didn't seem to make parking any easier, ended up with long walk up the hill to hotel and £10+ spent on parking.

Good welcome and pleasantly surprised by the decor and overall appearance. Room was spacious, clean and had air con. Result! Restaurant had a good choice and the food was great. Top breakfast. Will definitely stay again.

It was a fantastic experience and I cannot recommend this hotel enough! The staff bent over backwards to help me and my young son out and we even ended up staying an extra two nights, because we couldn’t bear to leave! Cannot recommend this hotel enough! Thank you The George, we’ll be back soon!

This was an excellent and comfortable option in the heart of Colchester. The room benefited from air con on such a hot weekend and we were in a quiet part of the hotel. Breakfast was cooked to order - my other half would have liked a fresh fruit salad (a basked of fruit was provided, to be fair). Unfortunately the WiFi was patchy throughout the building, not just in our room. If I’d had to do work it would have been impossible. We certainly couldn’t have watched a film online. If this could be sorted I’d say the hotel was worth 5 stars.
