Ox Hotel Carlisle

Room clean,smelt fresh, needs a few repairs. Cold shower,which could be an easy fix as water from taps was hot.Breakfast a bit poor,no bacon,no butter for toast,no white bread, empty plates not cleared from tables,think this was due minimal staff as receptionist was coming in now and again trying to do a bit. Stayed here before the boat people we're housed here and pool ,steam room,sauna and gym were all accessible but all closed off now.

Been staying here for years used to be great with the pool and steam room gym etc now they arent in use..dissappointing.. nice clean room as always good shower and bath lovely staff..only downside now is a bad smell going through reception like a drain smell which needs addressing

Signage- looking for the Ox Hotel and it’s signed as the Meridian Hilltop Hitel Room- not bad but we had 2; ours was ok. Bed comfortable. Son’s a bit outdated and had a smoke smell Bar; no stock! No draught other than cider, fridge also practically empty Breakfast; not bad for the price. Cereal, toast, sausage, egg, tomato, mushrooms and baked beans. Juice Decent price for a one night stop Hotel has TONS of potential; I hope it’s realized as I read somewhere it has new owners?

The hotel is dated, but considering the price it was great. The bed was comfortable, with clean sheets and the shower was hot with plenty of water. It has ample free parking and a 24 hour desk for late check in.

Wow where do I start with this hotel. First things first, I’m not one to complain (ever) so for me to take the time to write this review things must be bad. Ok let’s start with the one and only positive, the 2 staff members I have met have been friendly and helpful but sadly that’s where the positives most definitely end. The hotel is an absolute dump, £50 for a one night midweek stay is expensive to put it mildly. I went into the bar to grab a few drinks and found there to be no draught beers available expect cider so had to order 2 bottles of lager instead which worked out at £6.50 for a pint instead of £3.50. I ordered a Chicken Burger minus any sauce which surprise surprise turned up with sauce so that had to go back. Then after a long wait the food turned up this time thankfully minus the sauce on the burger but the onion rings and chips as can be seen on the picture looked like they had been chilling in the Sahara Desert on holiday judging by how dry they looked and tasted. Thankfully only here for 1 night and looking forward to checking out in the morning. If your looking for a cheap and cheerful night away consider elsewhere as this hotel will leave you more than disappointed. Never in a million years would I recommend anyone to stay at this hotel.

Hotel is very dated and looks nothing like photos on website. Not ideal for families more of a contractors hotel could do with a major update.took pictures but for some reason cant post them . There where buckets in hall way collecting water drips from roof . The gym/ leisure room was full of junk so couldn't be used . The whole place was in need of a make over . Worst place i have ever stayed

Receptionist was a bit cold and unfriendly by asking if I was from Tyneside when I am in fact from the borders of Scotland! Lots of rough white van man types in shorts staying at the hotel who weee loud and noisy til 2 am . Room was nice and cheap for the price paid but dated 10 minutes walk to a nearby Asda as a cold drink from the hotel bar costs £3-50 and is in a bottle as they don’t do draft drinks from a pump. Like a can of cheap beans you get what you pay for and this hotel does its job

Staff were lovely but advertised pool and gym no entry first night virtually no food available on menu and no draught beers only bottled cider on no alcohol beer on sale

Difficulty finding it - as it is NOT called Ox Hotel - some indication of this would be helpful when booking. The staff were pleasant. Room clean and quiet, bed comfortable, appliances and plumbing worked. Pie and mash supper was very basic and SO salty. I didn't have breakfast. It needs a thorough refurbishment, corridors smell of stale smoke, decoration tired to tatty.

The property was very tired and the stairs were covered in grass and dirt and remained so for the duration of our stay. The bath was dirty and the surrounding grout was disgusting and was covered in mould. The breakfast buffet was appalling and looked as it had been left out overnight and needless to say we did not partake of the food. We had stayed before but the apparent deterioration of standards will ensure we never stay there again and wouldn’t advise anyone else to do so either.

Outside there is no reference to Ox hotel, had to double check it was the right place at reception. The guy on reception was very helpful. Parking is good, give registration to reception and its free for guests. The room was basic with plain white walls and a few paint marks on the carpet, big bed, but the bedding wasn't fresh, as if it had been slept in before. We got the pillows changed as they didnt smell fresh, the replacement pillows were ok. Breakfast was good, buffet type with reasonable choice. If the bed was fresh and room cleaner my rating would have been higher.

Corridirs and room hsd a terrible stench. Bed was dirty. Bathroom sink had mould. Breakfast was cold and iver cooked. Jad to eait 30 nins on breakfast. All in all a bit disappointed

Good clean hotel , brilliant room rates . It’s not a 5star hotel just needs updating decor wise , but don’t let that put you off !! Staff are really friendly and helpful and a great breakfast ! WELL DONE

Several people had arrived to find that despite their reservations the hotel didn’t have a room for them. They were not happy. It took two trips back to reception to have my room entry card reprogrammed before I was able to get into my room. The room was average but tired

Splashes of paint on windows, skirting and carpet. No hooks anywhere to hang anything on, no chair to sit on, no coat hangers in so called wardrobe. No drawers , just two shelves in wardrobe. No shelves or hooks in bathroom. Shower not very good and a gale force wind blowing from behind the toilet! Breakfast.. first day had it cooked to order, so not too bad. Next two days were just rubbish. Bacon was rock hard, beans and toms cold. The food came out at intervals of about 10 mins at a time. Obviously the chef can’t multi task. Good points.. Staff were pleasant, Free car parking. Would use the hotel again, but for one night only and without the breakfast.

It was an ok stay really, the reason it was cheap is because it's quite outdated. The nice lady on reception seemed to be doing all the job roles. Breakfast was ok, the room decor/furniture was old and well used. In our room the shower thermostat only had one setting... Scalding! No matter which way your turned it, also the extractor didn't work, the toilet seat and lid wouldn't stay up either, the bathroom was just old and we'll used. Ideal location for visiting our daughter at university. Not sure if we'll use it again though.

Ok.. this place is cheap, i mean super cheap! You are not staying at the savoy, so drop your expectation and you wont be disappointed! Its clean, staff are lovely. Their beds i can only assume they got from guantanamo bay! My god ive never slept on something so uncomfortable. Its in need of some desperate renovation to bring it upto todays standards. Again.... its cheap as a campsite so i wasnt expecting too much. However for the price we paid.... id not discount it again should i be passing.

Hotel was good value for money but the mattress let them down

It was all good apart from the dubble bed ws 2 singles pushed together so bed was not the best to sleep in

Friendly staff easy to get to and close to town

The sign for the sex clinic next door was bigger than the sign for our hotel. The hotel was understaffed with the receptionist running the bar and the desk and constantly running between without support. The room was worn out and old, no iron in the rooms, the bath was gross, there was insufficient ventilation and no climate control.

Best value accommodation, even cheaper than a Youth Hostel. Decent sized room, with a desk and everything required for a good nights sleep. All staff, at reception and housekeeping, did their best to make us comfortable and at home. Would love to return one day!

The hotel was a one-night stopover. With that in mind, I found the hotel conveniently situated, the staff were pleasant & helpful, & I had a good night's sleep.

The hotel is in an ideal location for the long trip north. 6 minutes from the m6. Very cost effective. Exactly what I was looking For. This is the new go to place for the trips to Scotland. By no means the ritz but it does what it need to do.

Nice large space in the room, bed was comfortable and a good decent full cooked breakfast if wanted as well as toast and cereal by paying just a little extra. This hotel would be amazing if it opened up all it's facilities like the pool and gym. Room could have done with a better hoover, I stood on something sharp with my bare foot to find a big toenail clipping. Husband found shower in evening too hot and me in the morning too cold. These are minor criticisms as would stay again. Good budget hotel I would say

Disappointed in the hotel in a number of areas.Firstly it is very tired and needs upgrading.We had an adjoining room with only a small catch dividing us and strangers next door .The bar had very little drink on offer and the breakfast was awful and there was no bacon or fruit .If we had known what was on offer would have given it a miss.There was no bread until a guest asked for some and two loafs appeared still in its wrappers.After we checked in we asked for a change of room as there was young lads who were being boisterous next door .We were told the hotel was fully booked .Clearly a lie as the hotel was half empty.The positives were the linen and towels which were clean and the staff were in the main friendly and did what they could but felt they were embarrassed by the situation they found themselves in .The morning receptionist was openly apologetic.We would not stay here again ever and feel let down by Hotels.com having this on offer.This is the first time I have ever complained about any hotel I have ever stayed at and like I said very disappointed.

The Ox Hotel is fabulous value for money. The huge cooked buffet breakfast included vegetarian options. Jack the staff member was so helpful. We could walk to great takeaway options. The room was clean and comfortable and at least I could have a great bath! Worth every penny.

Perfect for a short stay. Not the most visually attractive building but served our needs. Probably one of the best breakfasts ive ever had and well worth the £8 Staff were very nice and extremely helpful. Our room had a smell when we arrived. We were told that after heavy rain the deains backed up. It was away by morning and there was no water ingress. We would return.
