Gem Strathmore Hotel

Hotel has one very small lift serving the whole hotel including staff movement. Very very slow & only takes two people. Breakfast very average, any hotel that serves tinned fruit in summer has a special place in hell. Room very small with little to recommend, bathroon very small to pokey. Can't say I would recommend.

Loved the property. Elevator was broken which for a 5 story hotel was difficult. Breakfast would have been better with pots of tea rather than an urn, maybe boiled eggs. But overall fantastic

The Gem Strathmore is perfectly located for exploring the museums and Hyde Park area of London. An easy block walk off the Gloucester Road Tube and an easy walk to South Kensington. The hotel is really nice. Comfortable and clean with an excellent bar to unwind in after a long day of sight seeing. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this hotel.

Great location. Helpful reception staff. Outdated and very slow lift. Bedroom clean and had tea/coffee facilities. Unfortunately on the hottest day of the year the lack of air conditioning was an issue. A fan was provided which on normal weather conditions would have been enough. It was cooler outside!

This property is hard to rate - my first impression was great - it's a very charming property in a very ritzy part of London. However I wrongly assumed that in such a ritzy area - such a nice looking property would have air-conditioning. It was unseasonably hot and the staff made use feel like we were asking too much to get a second small fan to cool the room which was super hot. Also drinks are very weak for the price - but that is apparently normal in London - bartenders in the US are much more generous with their pours! Stick with the Beer!!

This hotel is a real gem! Perfect for transport links, so much around the area like restaurants and bars. Close to the royal Albert hall and Kensington gardens. All the staff were so friendly and polite and our room was lovely. We were in room 314 which was right opposite the lift so it was a little noisy but it was absolutely fine as we aren’t light sleepers! We were able to leave our bags there free of charge before our room was ready so we could go out to explore too which was a real plus too. Breakfast was a little pricy for us so we opted for a local cafe. I would definitely stay here again!

Hotel, staff, location, facilities all excellent. Super comfy bed. Only downside was our room location, in the basement (not an issue in itself), but next to the external door / laundry room for the cleaners so we were disturbed early morning.

We had a twin room which was cold as the radiator wasn’t heating up on the first night but within minutes of reporting an electric heater was provided

There was no air con available in the room so it got very hot at night, but the hotel was good for being close to transport and restaurants

Nice lobby lounge. Fresh flowers, great tv, lovely place for an evening drink.

The room was very small and the windows sat very high, wich made the room not cosy at all. The bathroom needed good cleaning. The showerhead was calcified and so was the ligth in the shower, so it was so dark in the shower

The Gem Strathmore is constrained by the nature of the building but some better attention to detail could elevate the experience. For example, the picture in our room had slipped out of its surround (and clearly not recently), the cleaner put the contents of the bathroom bin down the toilet (plastic contact lens cases), and wardrobe doors couldn’t open because of the bed. The staff were very pleasant and efficient and the location was excellent.

Used toiletries in the bathrooms. Uncomfortable beds. Only 2 outlets in the rooms (by the door at that- not even next to the beds) and the breakfast that they have you pay for is subpar. I've had better breakfasts at cheap chain hotels. Mugs were also dirty in the room. It is a pretty building though

Lovely hotel but not overly clean in the room if you’re looking in the corners etc. Could do with a few revamps to get up to 4 star standard. Also, the room was extremely hot. A fan was provided though. Good location though for what we wanted to do in London, and I would return. Thank you

Clean room, kind staff & great location.

From the point of booking the communication was very good answering all the questions we had prior to our trip. We arrived earlier than our check in to make use of the hotels luggage store, which we also utilised for a coupld of hours after check out. This was a big help for our trip and saved us trailing a large suitcase round the city. The staff were very welcoming and explained everything well. Our room was immaculate and had everything we needed for a relax stay in London.

A good, clean room - not a bad price for London and a twin room. Unfortunately we were on the top (5th) floor on a very hot day/night, and the property being old doesn’t have air conditioning. However, the staff had already opened the windows and drawn the blinds and put a fan (on) in the room. They also brought up cool water and glasses for the room shortly after we went up. The staff were attentive and always happy to help where they could and the rooms were clean and had plenty of sockets. The bathroom was tiny but they still managed to get a decent shower in there. The hotel is a gorgeous period building and a lot of the original features remain including stained glass windows in the bar. I would definitely stay here again.

The property is a lot older than I expected and our room smelled of wet dog for some reason. Walls are paper thin and I could hear the screaming from the floors above us and people coming out of the lifts as our room was situated near the lift. We asked to get the room cleaned each day and they didn't stock up on toilet paper and any other toiletries. However, the hotel is very close to the tube and convenient to travel to central London. It was within walking distance to convenience stores and a few restaurants too.

I don't know where to start. On check-in, our room was described as luxury - 30 years ago this may have been true. Holes in the carpet, tatty, old furniture, torn valance, tiny, claustrophobic bathroom, sticky biscuit packets, stained, old pillows. Generally, if we hadn't been rushing off to an appointment, we wouldn't have stayed

We chose this hotel mainly due to its proximity to the Royal Albert Hall, where we were going to attend a concert. The hotel looked ideal on the photographs and the price seemed good for a Kensington hotel. The building itself is nice, staff very helpful and friendly - BUT - there’s always one of those … we were shocked at how tiny the room was !! I suppose it goes to show how deceptive a well taken photo can be. Mitigating factors - it was the hottest day of the year (34 degrees) and the hotel IS in Kensington. That said, the room was like a very small, hot rabbit hutch with just enough room for the king bed, one of the smallest en-suite bathrooms and smallest showers we’ve ever come across (worldwide), and a totally ineffective table fan just basically blowing hot air around. We paid for a superior room so who knows what the ‘ordinary’ rooms are like for size. This all sounds negative - but the staff were fine, the location was great for what we were doing and the bar was quiet and cool. It’s the size of the room that really spoilt the experience. As experienced travellers, maybe we should have managed our own expectations better … Anyway, that’s ’operation toasted rabbit’ done and we survived. Sorry Strathmore, I know this seems like a bad review but it’s only because of the room size. Dave & Caz

Must be the smallest room I have ever stayed in!

Nice area and relatively quiet at night. We were near the lift and you can hear it from the room. Parts of our room were a bit tatty but overall it was nice and had a lovely view. The beds were not the comfiest in the world.

I stay here when I travel to London for work. It's much better than the other chains. It's full of character and tends to be quieter. Staff are friendly. Rooms are clean and comfortable, if a little on the small side. It's my go-to hotel and I've not been let down yet.

We had a great stay. The bed was comfortable and the room was spacious.

Average hotel, rooms extremely small, could hardly move, shower very small, if you are large build you are bot getting in the shower. No air con, fan provided, room like a sauna, bad sleep due to extreme heat, staff friendly, super location for RAH and museums. Hotel ok for one night but would not want to stay any longer but pleasant enough.

Convenient location close to the museums, South Kensington and Royal Albert Hall. The room was on the lower ground and had no windows to the outside. It was quite small but fine for one night

I booked this hotel due to its proximity to the Royal Albert Hall where I was going to see a concert. I booked a Superior Double room and was allotted room 007 which was clean, comfortable and modern but was VERY compact. I actually thought they must have given me the wrong room as it didn’t quite look like the pics on hotels.com. The shower room/ wash room was also compact and I must say that I was disappointed with the size of the room - but as I was staying just one night I didn’t make a fuss. The room had a modern TV and had tea/ coffee facilities. The bed was very comfortable and I slept well after my evening out.

Very small room but elegant and convenient

We enjoyed a lovely stay at the property, chosen for its proximity to the Royal Albert Hall. Reception staff were wonderful and made us feel very welcome. The room was clean and had everything we needed for a nights stay. Location was perfect, within walking distance to Hyde Park, the Royal Albert Hall and Knightsbridge (Harrods). The lounge area was very comfortable - a perfect cosy spot on a winters day. The only slight disappointment was experienced at breakfast. Our waitress (who was lovely) unfortunately took down our order incorrectly (allergy related). When she brought out our food, I noticed straight away mine was incorrect she placed my husbands plate down and took mine away quickly. It was only then we noticed my husband’s order was missing an item. No one was around to tell so, not wanting his food to get cold he started to eat. When we did have opportunity to tell another member of staff (who was wearing a different uniform to the waitresses) he was missing an item, she was aggressive, said that we should have notified our waitress as she brought it to us (we explained we’d not had chance as she took mine away so quickly) and then proceeded to very loudly say ‘What do you want me to do about it? Tell me what you want’ It was all very embarrassing and completely unnecessary - it wasn’t a big issue but she was rude and made us feel so uncomfortable we told her not to worry about it. Everyone and everything else was lovely.

Lovely hotel,amazing staff. Especially sangeeth from concierge and housekeeping manager was very helpful. Looking forward to book again.

The hotel staff were superb. We were offered an upgrade which was very nice. The room was very clean and beautifully furnished. The breakfast was hot and plentiful. Well done to everyone. Thank you. I would stay again anytime.

Average hotel stay, room was on the small side and a bit dated. Didn’t like that they also tried to take money from my account before I’ve arrived even tho on the booking it states pay at the accommodation. This has happened before on previous visits. A simple phone call would suffice to confirm that I still required room

We booked the Gem Strathmore hoping for boutique charm and comfort. What we got was a tired hotel trading on location, with service levels that would embarrass a budget hostel. We paid extra for early check-in and called ahead, but still waited past noon with a jet-lagged toddler and zero apology. Staff were indifferent throughout — no greeting, no help with bags, not even a bit of sympathy to our situation. The room was sweltering with no AC, just two small desk fans and plugs only on one side of the room. It was basically a sauna with bedding. No fridge, no plug in the bathroom, and no attempt to make up for it - just a stunning absence of basics. The lift, presumably installed during the Edwardian era and never updated since, took ages to arrive. When it did, it was occupied by a staff member with bags of dirty laundry - he didn't even flinch at the sight of a family waiting with a child and luggage. Expedia mentioned babysitting services(for an extra fee). They don’t exist. When asked, staff shrugged. No apology, no explanation, no gesture of goodwill. We left without staying the night - and no one cared. We paid over $500. For that, we expected hospitality. We would have settled for competence. Instead, we got apathy and the privilege of being ignored. They offered nothing — not even a token refund. Avoid. There are far better uses for your money — and your patience. The only thing gem-like about this place is how hard it is, in every way, to enjoy.

The staff was amazing. So kind, went out of their way to accommodate us when we arrived with tons of bags and a room too small to hold us and them. We will definitely return!

Gorgeous property with very friendly and helpful staff. Great location with plenty of dining nearby, close to the V&A, and steps from the train station. Already looking forward to staying here again!

Quiet place and conveniently located.

We enjoyed our stay at Gem Strathmore. The location is perfect. A short walk to dining options, the Gloucester Tube station and museums. The staff was very pleasant and the facilities were clean.

Beautiful Hotel well situated in London. Walking distance to underground station, tons of restaurants and cafes near by. Room was big and comfy with a nice view. Nice lobby where you can have some tea or drinks. Will def stay again next time.

Short but pleasant stay. Great location, very short walk to Gloucester Road tube station. I had booked a single room and it was very small (so was the bathroom) ! However the room was clean, the bed comfortable, no noise issues, I slept well. Breakfast was excellent, attentive staff and very tasty cooked options. Would definitely return again although I would opt for a double room for a bit more space.

Staff were very friendly. Room a bit tired but a good size. The rooms are probably in need of an upgrade but appreciate that this is an expensive exercise. Breakfast was good. Lots of choice.

Considering the cost of the room the carpet in our room could have done with a shampoo. The cost of a full cooked breakfast was £24 so we went out. There are a number of cafes/restaurants offering a smaller far less expensive breakfast which are only a short walk away.

Room was a bit small and cramped but OK for just sleeping in. Nice bar with reasonably priced drinks and dining room with good Continental breakfast. handy for tube links with Gloucester Road station 5 mins walk and the Museums along with Royal Albert hall are also very easily walkable.

Couldn’t have had a better stay! Very safe and quiet area to escape to at the end of a busy day out touring around London. The rooms are clean and comfortable And staff are wonderful. The breakfast is a bit overpriced For light eaters is my only comment

Fantastic stay due to food, hospitality, location, and quiet. Every meal we had was wonderful including their high tea. The service was top notch and quick on the turnaround whether we needed more towels, water, etc. Very friendly and a lot nearby.
