Pub/hotel was ideally situated in the centre of Marlborough. We had no problem parking in their large car park but I assume it could get full at busy times. Parking was free for residents but pay and display for everybody else. Staff were friendly and the evening meal in the pub was delicious. We did not have the breakfast so cannot comment. Room was a decent size. Everything was clean.

Plenty of spaces in the free car park, quick smooth checkin, nice room, comfortable bed. Bar area nice to have a drink could have better selection of ales and lagers. Dinner and breakfast was really nice in the restaurant area. We were part of a large group the lady on reception was really helpful nothing was too much trouble. Woukd happily stay here again if in the area.

The Castle & Ball is a slightly creaky old place but with friendly, welcoming employees who make staying there a pleasure. It has a central location (in the middle of the High Street, with parking behind). All the staff were lovely - Naomi (who checked us in) in particular was fantastic, including arranging a Z-bed at practically no notice when we had an unheralded extra who decided to stay with us. Thank you!

We enjoyed a very good stopover on the way back from Cornwall at the Castle and Ball. It has all the character of an historic inn, though this does mean there are quite a lot of steps and stairs and creaky floorboards, but the receptionist was quick to offer us help with our luggage and in fact we found our room very quiet (we were at the back, so not overlooking the High Street) as well as clean and spacious. General decor and condition ( carpets etc) not the most swish or up to date, but we prefer character to the bland sameness of chain hotels. We enjoyed our evening meal which is from the same Greene King menu we have experienced elsewhere, but offers a good choice of dishes at reasonable cost, and the clever idea of mini- desserts if you don't want a whole large one at the end of your meal . Parking was easy behind the hotel, and free to residents on registration at Reception. Marlborough is a lovely old town, prosperous, with some good shops along the High Street. World Heritage site, Avebury, is a short drive away. Thoroughly recommended.

Terrible. Room was dirty and the condition of the furniture was shocking. Headboard looked like it had been clawed by wolves, furniture was cracked and smashed up. Blood stains on the walls. Dirty carpets. The water went off for the day with no warning so I couldn’t flush the loo or wash my hands. I stayed in a hotel in Charlotte once where someone was murdered outside my room. Overall it was a much classier stay than my night in the Castle and Ball and frankly the carpet was cleaner after they took the body away.

Fantastic location. The hotel is in much need of a make over and a deep clean. The beds were extremely uncomfortable and the walls dirty. The staff were however really friendly and helpful.

I will say it was a busy weekend when we stayed, so perhaps this room is often unused? The room itself needed some attention. Corner chunk of bedside table laminate was missing exposing underlying wood which could result in harm to clothing or skin; The edges of the bath where it meets the walls, and the area around the shower where fixed to the wall, all need a good clean. No such issue with the sink areas or the rest of the room; The hot water for the bath initially ran a bit grey, again I think lack of use, but cleared. Section of wallpaper near the built in wardrobe coming away, perhaps from an old leak?? But no actual dampness or fustiness. Good selection of tea bags/ coffe sachets in the room. As the room was off around the back (loads of stairs) it was quieter maybe than rooms directly above the bar areas - same as most old pubs & inns. On-site staff were excellent. 'Housekeeping' will knock at your door in the morning if you're staying more than 1 night, so if you're not going down for breakfast, or going out, be aware. Booking system. Weird. Booked via hotels.com, their email said there's no reception desk at the hotel, but there is. If you want to eat at this hotel, reserve a table as the food is excellent. One of the few places in Marlborough with it's own car park - provide vehicle reg when arrive. That's it I think!

The Castle and Ball provides unpretentious and uncomplicated accommodation. My room was large but not particularly clean, the lamps flickered, there was a rim of scum around the bath and detritus from previous guests behind the table. It was noisy (expected being over a pub). Upsides were pleasant service, easy to get in and out and good food.

It was a good stay but with one problem. We were in a first floor room and experienced an unsatisfactory amount of noise from the room above, caused by incredibly squeaky floor boards. It’s an old hotel with lots of character but some kind of sound insulation is need for this room.

This inn is old and rooms, while clean, comfortable, and very serviceable, are tired and could use some updating. The staff was very helpful with luggage, etc. I’ll certainly visit again.

Staff on reception always welcoming. Stayed numerous times, apart from squeaky floorboards which cannot be helped in an old building, everything is fine.

Very picturesque, old hotel. Good food and selection of drinks in the bar, staff friendly and helpful. The room was a good size and comfortable, although I'm not sure 4 people could stay for long in it. However, the floorboards in the room creaked whenever you walked on them and the fan in the bathroom was the loudest I've heard in a long time! Important if, like me, you're up to the toilet during the night and your partner is sleeping. Certainly full of character!

Historic property in the centre of Marlborough. Very convenient for the town and a good base to explore the local area. Food was good and staff helpful although they were busy. Room was well equipped and only thought was that it was looking a bit tired decor wise. Very comfy bed so no complaints. Would definitely stay again.

Dinner and breakfast was really nice in the restaurant area. We were part of a large group the lady on reception was really helpful nothing was too much trouble. Woukd happily stay here again if in the area.
Plenty of spaces in the free car park, quick smooth checkin, nice room, comfortable bed. Bar area nice to have a drink could have better selection of ales and lagers. The Castle & Ball is a slightly creaky old place but with friendly, welcoming employees who make staying there a pleasure. It has a central location (in the middle of the High Street, with parking behind). All the staff were lovely - Naomi (who checked us in) in particular was fantastic, including arranging a Z-bed at practically no notice when we had an unheralded extra who decided to stay with us. Thank you!

Staff on reception always welcoming. Stayed numerous times, apart from squeaky floorboards which cannot be helped in an old building, everything is fine.

I stay there a lot when flying into or out of Heathrow. It's very convenient. The staff are always nice and parking is good and central. Then of course, it's super convenient for the prehistoric stone circle at Avebury and also a good place for Stonehenge. If you want a modern place, this isn't for you, but if you don't mind things being 17th Century,maybe it is.

Historic property in the centre of Marlborough. Very convenient for the town and a good base to explore the local area. Food was good and staff helpful although they were busy. Room was well equipped and only thought was that it was looking a bit tired decor wise. Very comfy bed so no complaints. Would definitely stay again.

The hotel is located in the middle of Marlborough 's unique High Street. Our room was large by UK standards with a clear view of the high st. The staff are friendly but our room did not get made up after the first night. There is ample free parking but for our visit most of the places were blocked off for a marquee . No alternative was offered.

Excellent hotel all round, full of character located in beautiful town. Lots of food options and brilliantly located to see Avebury, Stonehenge etc. One small criticism, was that one of our rooms was over the pub bathrooms and the sound of hand driers blasting through the night was disturbing.. it is a pub though, so can't complain too loudly.

We enjoyed a very good stopover on the way back from Cornwall at the Castle and Ball. It has all the character of an historic inn, though this does mean there are quite a lot of steps and stairs and creaky floorboards, but the receptionist was quick to offer us help with our luggage and in fact we found our room very quiet (we were at the back, so not overlooking the High Street) as well as clean and spacious. General decor and condition ( carpets etc) not the most swish or up to date, but we prefer character to the bland sameness of chain hotels. We enjoyed our evening meal which is from the same Greene King menu we have experienced elsewhere, but offers a good choice of dishes at reasonable cost, and the clever idea of mini- desserts if you don't want a whole large one at the end of your meal . Parking was easy behind the hotel, and free to residents on registration at Reception. Marlborough is a lovely old town, prosperous, with some good shops along the High Street. World Heritage site, Avebury, is a short drive away. Thoroughly recommended.

Efficient helpful staff. Busy pub/restaurant with nice atmosphere. Great breakfast with good selection and range of cooked options. Room at the back overlooking the car park was quiet and perfectly adequate for my couple of nights stay. Marlborough was a lovely town for a quick walk round with a few independent shops and cafes.

Did not like the roast dinner we had, was like a frozen dinner heated up , disgusting. Put us off staying and eating there again.

The cooked breakfast was disappointing. Cold avocado, toast made soggy by inadequately drained poached egg water. Runny egg white. Vegetarian sausage dried out and inedible. Lack of cutlery - no butter knives or teaspoons.

Rooms were large and clean but windows didn't close easily. Staff were friendly and very helpful and there was a busy restaurant and bar. Parking can be difficult if it's busy and there is a low entrance to the car park (max 2.5m) - worth noting if you have a high van. It is possible to get round the back but it is very tight.

Car parking behind hotel. Reception & bar staff very friendly. Room very comfortable (a bit wonky & creaky due to it being a very old building) A good position, near middle of town. Enjoyed our stay.

Public areas were well maintained and staff were helpful and friendly. However the room and the bathroom was very dated and required renovation. There was a lack of plug sockets, amongst other things. We could not watch television and have the fan on near us (it was during the heatwave) as there was only one socket. I thought it was over priced for the condition of the room and would not stay again.
