Gateway Inn & Suites in Salida, Colorado is an excellent facility and obviously the result of hard-working management doing their best to deliver excellent facilities and service to the traveling public. This is a great example of entrepreneurship and small business at its finest. The breakfast offering is fantastic, the rooms are beautifully appointed and all the fixtures and flooring, paint and finishes are nearly perfect. The bed was comfortable and I had some of the best sleep in a hotel I have had in recent years. The mix of guests among the nearly 96 rooms was quite entertaining, and included folks from every walk of life. There were bikers (motorcycles), folks from back east, very senior citizens, young families with dogs (not in the rooms, but out and about), and all the activity that goes with it. Parking was tight, but we managed. We would be delighted and happy to stay here again. KUDOS to the management of Gateway Inn & Suites. They deserve a hearty THANK YOU! No wonder this facility sells out routinely. I will again work hard to get my reservation in early!

When we checked in, a friendly female receptionist helped us. Though we are non-smokers, she reminded us there was no smoking in rooms or outside rooms. When we entered our room there were other guests standing outside their rooms smoking. That night we were awakened at 2AM with loud knocking on doors and loud talking, which kept us awake for 30 minutes. As we left our room for breakfast, there were more smokers standing around outside. Breakfast, provided by Gateway, was very good with lots of breakfast selections (best part of our stay!). When we checked out, a male receptionist helped us. He looked like he had just gotten out of bed. I notified him about being awakened at 2AM by the other guests rooming on both sides of our room, whom seemed to know each other. He advised me that these “guests” were “night workers” and 2AM was their break time. No apology given. When I mentioned that they were also smoking on the walkway….he went silent. When I mentioned that we were advised upon checking in, there was no smoking allowed in or outside the rooms, he made no comment or apology. He seemed irritated that I would complain! After some thought, and being advised that all these people were “night workers”, I wondered why they would assign us a room in the middle of these workers’ rooms since they knew they took breaks at 2AM and THEY were smoking outside? There were quieter parts of the hotel other guests stayed in. Could it be we paid for our room through a third party?

We had a great experience there. It was conveniently located. It had hot breakfast and a working hot tub. Our room was really spacious.

We booked it at a 9 rating, saying it was very good. Construction workers in and out all the time. We thought the pictures look good. The bathroom was so small. The toilet had a little bitty lid. So the bathroom door would shut How does stand between the toilet and tub to get it shut The toilet faced the bed. If you like a pillow top, it's okay but too soft for us. And it's noisy for the construction workers all night did not sleep. Good. No smoking or pets, but we could spell marijuana big time.

The place is clean, a bit outdated, & staff are pleasant, but this stay was not as good as my last, as my mattress was very broken down and had a huge pit in the center. Made it difficult to get a good nights sleep due to discomfort. Overall I do like staying there but was unhappy with my bed this time around.
