We have stayed in this hotel perhaps 5 times over a number of years. We like it's location and the garden is lovely. Although it used to seem a little old-fashioned we enjoyed spacious rooms. This time we found that our room, although clean, had a rather tired look. The public area seemed very noisy, with intrusive music. The staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was rather disappointing, with the marmalade 'extractor' not working and with no substitute (marmalade in a jar?) on one day and a pancake maker which appeared to be out of action. The orange juice was disappointing, there was no mustard available, the scrambled egg had separated (a solid mass and a watery liquid) and there was no fried egg and no notice that it would be available shortly. Even the range of cereals seemed very dull, although muesli and granola were available on our second day. Signs of a little more care taken would go a long way to improve things.

Very overpriced for the service and amenities (~£250 a night). Staff were very friendly on arrival however did not mention important points like the room service menu not being available to order online or through the phone and having to instead walk to the bar to place an order. The food experience was strange - on three occasions substitutions were made to menu items and delivered to us without explanation, including a vegan curry for a chicken curry. Although the food was cooked well, ingredient quality, particularly the fresh salads, was low. The room was also not cleaned properly, with lots of dust on crockery and in bathroom. On one morning, breakfast arrived over an hour late. Whilst staff did apologise, items were still missing from the tray.

The staff are lovely and friendly, but this hotel needs updating, the rooms are really worn, thread bare carpets and very tired bathrooms, no privacy at the windows unless you close the curtains and the lighting in the room was provided by lamps, for a Mercure hotel this is shameful, especially for the price paid, we were disappointed.

We did not have a particularly good or comfortable stay. I had booked a room with 2 double beds for myself and my fellow traveller. We apparently were upgraded. It was a large room however one bed was a regular bed but the second a Z bed with a metal frame that was not at all comfortable. I did approach reception but they said that all rooms were booked so could not change my room. In addition the majority of electric sockets, of which there were plenty in the room, did not accept standard UK plugs, which caused further frustration. When I complained in the morning the person on reception was very understanding. However, we then found that we had not been checked in properly and so they did not have our details. We could have been offered an extension for plugs but wasn't. Overall a very disappointing stay, the hotel really requires refurbishment. Breakfast was okay but the dining area was not terribly inviting. Much needs to be improved at this property. Suffice to say we will not be returning.
