We stayed for two nights in room 101. All good at sign in then we went to the room and tried to sign in to the WiFi to work…nothing. I rang reception who explained how to sign in as no instructions on the tv or room. That detail was explained but still Wouldn’t sign in. So I took my iPhones to reception and it immediately signed in. We later found out that IT had been working on it all day so the hotel guests entirely were not able to access WiFi at all. I was furious that reception knew this but decided or was instructed not to be honest. Honesty from the start is so important. No work undertaken for day 1. Day 2 it was still the same but the reception staff provided an alternative to all me to work because I had business meetings. The bathroom sink has an awful smell coming up through it when some water is run. A little treatment would sort that out.

We chose Aldwark Manor specifically for its advertised spa and pool facilities, seeking a restful weekend with guaranteed access to swimming. It is prominently marketed as a “Spa Hotel” (including as “Aldwark SPA Hotel”), yet only after booking—when the reservation was already non‑refundable—did we discover by email that spa access incurs additional charges. These fees relate solely to limited use of the indoor/outdoor pool and do not include any treatment. Had this been made explicitly clear in the advertising and room descriptions before payment, we would have chosen a different hotel within the same price range offering better amenities for staying guests, and not driven the extra 35 minutes on the understanding that spa access was implied by the listing. The response we received—that “this is standard”—does not reflect our experience elsewhere, where spa access for hotel residents is typically included or clearly itemised at the point of booking. The effective cost per hour simply to use the pool while staying at a property presented as a spa hotel felt disproportionate. Our classic room was generally clean, but arrived with a dirty teaspoon left in the tea tray. The view also did not match the description: rather than the advertised river or garden views stated for classic rooms, we faced dismantled scaffolding.
