This was quite a last-minute booking, as my business travel plans weren’t firmed up until 24 hours before my trip. I was so lucky to find a room at New Holgate, as it’s a brilliant location for the centre of York. The pictures really do the rooms justice, they are excellent. A very generous size, with great facilities and a lovely bathroom. Bed was extremely comfortable. I pre-booked the parking for £12.50, which is a good rate considering how ludicrously expensive parking is in York. The hotel is so well-situated that I was able to walk to the Grand Opera House that evening to see a gig, and walk to the Railway Museum in the morning before I left for my work trip. Always a highlight of visiting York, it was so nice to be able to walk there easily in 15 mins. I didn’t go for breakfast at the hotel, but I did walk through the breakfast room a couple of times and it looked very nice. The breakfast did smell very nice as I left for the museum. I would highly recommend New Holgate to anyone visiting York, and I will definitely be returning.

We stayed in a lovely room on the top floor very quiet and comfortable. The hotel.offers breakfast and a lovely little snug for a small nightcap at night. Lovely quiet location within 10-15mins walk of the city centre. Private parking was very useful. Rooms were very lovely and comfortable and the staff could not have been friendlier. The only very small additional thing that would have enhanced stay even further would have been access to a fan, when the sun was on the big front window, the room was very warm. But other than that a cracking little hotel that I will definitely use again.

The decor in the room and the hotel in general is beautiful and tasteful. It looks like it’s been renovated completely not too long ago. It had a real feel of luxury to it. The room was beautifully clean and there were lots of nice touches like we were given fresh milk in a thermos when we arrived and they offer Taylor’s of Harrogate coffee bags and Yorkshire tea. The toiletries were H2K and smelled really good. We had a cocktail in the little lounge in the evening and the manager was very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. She made beautiful cocktails and chatted to us but never felt over bearing. We loved our stay here and would recommend to anyone. It’s not really central but there’s a bus stop not far from the hotel with regular buses to the centre or you can walk there in about 20 minutes.

Lovely stay. Good location to walk into York and close.to York.Station. The room, had plenty of space for the Delux.Room. bed and pillows were relly comfy. Our only gripe would be the water.pressure. The.shower is a challenge especially if you need to wash your hair! We also felt charging for parking on the premises was excessive considering the rooms aren't cheap. Breakfast was very nice anf freshly cooked, but again an additional cost £20!

We stayed overnight at New Holgate, great location and walking distance into town is very quick and easy. Hotel is clean and tidy and beautifully furnished/decorated. I would’ve scored New Holgate a 5 stars if the parking wasn’t an additional £12.50-£15 fee on top of your accommodation price. Seems a little cheeky to me to then charge customers to park at the hotel they’ve paid for and not a cheap price at that. That was the only disappointing thing about New Holgate and should definitely be reviewed.

The hotel is on a main road and is ideally situated just outside the city centre and around 5 minutes from the racecourse. It’s about £5 in a taxi to both. The room we booked had plenty of room and was very clean and modern. I had looked up the hotel before we booked and found that the car parking is behind the building on Weston Terrace and is charged at £20 per day. The electric chargers were out of service though. We got back to our hotel at night and had to work out how to get in. The front door closes at 10 and there didn’t appear to be any staff working. So we had to go around to the back of the building to get in. When you check in you’re escorted to your room. Don’t think that the receptionist has left her drink in your room! It’s a complimentary water along with a flask of milk for the provided tea and coffee. The Wi-Fi is free and very easy to connect to. Use it to connect the TV too. We slept really well. However, the room was quite warm and the windows only open slightly. Overall this was a really good stay during races week and we would happily come back.

Stayed here for an event at York racecourse and booked very last minute but they were brilliant. Lovely place and room, I just hadn’t realised parking was round the back and couldn’t find it when arriving in the dark so if you’re staying here just drive round the back!

What a beautiful beautiful hotel great location not far from town gates. The staff at holgate were so friendly and helpful. The room was excellent very clean and just what we needed. Thought there might be a problem being on the main road. But did not here the traffic and the bed was so comfortable. Didn't gave the breakfast as we had breakfast in town. But would definitely stay here again. Well earned 5 stars all day long

Clean and high quality furnishings. My room was very ‘cosy’ for the price and the shower flooded the bathroom almost immediately. I think it must be a brand new hotel as I had to personally set up the TV as well

Breakfast was lively with a great choice, the bed was really comfortable and the hotel was very clean. There was a problem however with the heating not working in our room which was located in the cellar part of the property.There was also a smell in the bathroom and I think this may have been an issue with getting waste to the main sewer system from that level. Overall we enjoyed our stay but as the temperature gets colder the heating needs to hi on.

Lovely decor, super comfy beds and bed linen. New Holgate Hotel is immaculately clean and serves a great breakfast. A special thank you to Julie and Francesca who are so welcoming and helpful, as was the gentleman in Reception this afternoon. They are a credit to Rena the Manager.

Room was very modern and clean, lovely bed and bathroom, was also very warm which was needed when we went in December! Staff were lovely and it was an easy walk to the city center and train station. The only minor thing was you could hear everything going on in the hallway, even when people were talking quietly walking and closing doors, so not the best night sleep (even though the bed was amazing!).

The rooms were very noisy, both inside and outside. Guests were coming in at all hours and you could hear everything. And the road was quite loud with the windows obviously not being soundproofed in any way.

We stayed at the New Holgate for one night in mid November. It’s an easy and pleasant walk from York train station, which made arriving and getting around very convenient. We had booked a deluxe double room, which Hotels.com described as having both a separate bathtub and shower, but it only had a shower so I assume we were put in a standard room. As we were only staying for one night, it didn’t feel worth raising a complaint, but it was disappointing given the “deluxe” label. The room itself was reasonably comfortable, but when we returned in the evening the heating had been switched on and the room was unbearably hot—more like a sauna. It made getting any proper sleep very difficult. Breakfast was fine but quite underwhelming. There was no toaster or butter available, the coffee machine was out of order, and the dining room felt extremely cramped. Nothing about it felt particularly special or premium. Overall, it was an ok stay, but certainly not the deluxe experience we had expected based on the booking description. The location is great, but several aspects left us feeling underwhelmed.

A lovely hotel that maybe favours form over functioni.e. The Bathroom sink looks nice but is too small to be used without getting the bathroom drenched, the shower has no shelving for any products so they had to be left on the floor and you couldn’t turn the main light off without getting out of bed. Overall a nice hotel that just needs some simple tweaks to make it great.

Clean and high quality furnishings. My room was very ‘cosy’ for the price and the shower flooded the bathroom almost immediately. I think it must be a brand new hotel as I had to personally set up the TV as well

This is a lovely, small hotel. The rooms are beautifully decorated and the staff are very friendly and efficient. The only slight problem is road traffic noise which did make it difficult to sleep.

The young man on reception was wonderful, polite, helpful and so friendly, lovely room, coat hangers would have been good, I found the noise from the road kept me awake, and I couldn't get the temperature right, too cold, too hot, but it's an old building, and this wouldn't stop me from staying again. I didn't have breakfast as I left each day before it was served, but feel £18.95 was very steep. I loved the help yourself to more tea, coffee and FRESH MILK, non of this UHT stuff. If you don't mind a walk it's about 20-25 minutes to get to the centre of the town but it's a lovely walk. Great find and a great room price for York.

We enjoyed our stay. Very comfortable, beautiful hotel and the staff could not do enough to help us. Delicious breakfast, quality ingredients and the location is very convenient for a stroll into the city centre.

The hotel was lovely - very cosy and clean, and breakfast was tasty. The lady who checked us in on Friday night was friendly and helpful, and mentioned that we could leave our car in the car park all the next day as parking in town was expensive. However, the man who was there to check us out in the morning was very rude and sarcastic to my wife when she asked about the car park, saying ‘yeah I’m sure that’ll be fine, it’s only a fully booked Saturday with lots of new guests checking in’. My wife was very taken aback by this and quite upset to be spoken to rudely. Also, we asked to add another guest and the hotel said that would be fine, but then charged us £30 for the use of the sofa bed without mentioning it. Overall, a mixed stay!

We were greeted warmly and given the ST. Peters Suite which was the most incredible basement suite. The service was lovely and efficient. The hotel looks freshly done and has great attention to detail. We were concerned that the shower was backed up and mentioned it and it was dealt with and fed back upon our return in the afternoon. There is a car park at the rear and it is only a 10-15 walk into the city walls. A perfect weekend break location.

Perhaps one of the most disappointing hotel stays I've ever had. The room itself is beautiful and very aesthetic but thats perhaps where the positives end. The room we were put in was right by the front door which would be absolutely fine if the room was remotely sound proof. We were woken up so early on the Sunday of our stay owing to guests leaving early. We could hear every word spoken by concierge/guests and hear every time the bell rang. There felt like a distinct lack of privacy given this. Given we came for a relaxing weekend away we woke up earlier than we would mid-week for work. There was no discount for staying in this room. I told the lady on reception when I left about just how disappointed I was with the room and she seemed uninterested simply saying sorry. There was also an issue checking in. We waited for 15 minutes with another guest behind also waiting. I tried ringing the front desk and ringing the bell multiple times but no-one came. There were also no towels in our room and the chain to bring down the blinds snapped. The curtains do not shut fully and leave a gap between them letting light in. In short, if you want a hotel that favours style over substance this is the one. For us however we wish we'd have stayed somewhere else

This was quite a last-minute booking, as my business travel plans weren’t firmed up until 24 hours before my trip. I was so lucky to find a room at New Holgate, as it’s a brilliant location for the centre of York. The pictures really do the rooms justice, they are excellent. A very generous size, with great facilities and a lovely bathroom. Bed was extremely comfortable. I pre-booked the parking for £12.50, which is a good rate considering how ludicrously expensive parking is in York. The hotel is so well-situated that I was able to walk to the Grand Opera House that evening to see a gig, and walk to the Railway Museum in the morning before I left for my work trip. Always a highlight of visiting York, it was so nice to be able to walk there easily in 15 mins. I didn’t go for breakfast at the hotel, but I did walk through the breakfast room a couple of times and it looked very nice. The breakfast did smell very nice as I left for the museum. I would highly recommend New Holgate to anyone visiting York, and I will definitely be returning.

Lovely quiet location within 10-15mins walk of the city centre. Private parking was very useful. Rooms were very lovely and comfortable and the staff could not have been friendlier. The only very small additional thing that would have enhanced stay even further would have been access to a fan, when the sun was on the big front window, the room was very warm. But other than that a cracking little hotel that I will definitely use again.

We stayed overnight at New Holgate, great location and walking distance into town is very quick and easy. Hotel is clean and tidy and beautifully furnished/decorated. I would’ve scored New Holgate a 5 stars if the parking wasn’t an additional £12.50-£15 fee on top of your accommodation price. Seems a little cheeky to me to then charge customers to park at the hotel they’ve paid for and not a cheap price at that. That was the only disappointing thing about New Holgate and should definitely be reviewed.

We stayed at the New Holgate for one night in mid November. It’s an easy and pleasant walk from York train station, which made arriving and getting around very convenient. We had booked a deluxe double room, which Hotels.com described as having both a separate bathtub and shower, but it only had a shower so I assume we were put in a standard room. As we were only staying for one night, it didn’t feel worth raising a complaint, but it was disappointing given the “deluxe” label. The room itself was reasonably comfortable, but when we returned in the evening the heating had been switched on and the room was unbearably hot—more like a sauna. It made getting any proper sleep very difficult. Breakfast was fine but quite underwhelming. There was no toaster or butter available, the coffee machine was out of order, and the dining room felt extremely cramped. Nothing about it felt particularly special or premium. Overall, it was an ok stay, but certainly not the deluxe experience we had expected based on the booking description. The location is great, but several aspects left us feeling underwhelmed.

The.shower is a challenge especially if you need to wash your hair! We also felt charging for parking on the premises was excessive considering the rooms aren't cheap. Extensive travelling in the UK this is the best hotel yet. Helpful friendly staff, comfortable bed, great bathroom and shower, lovely furnishings and super clean. Lots of streaming choices on the tv. Breakfast was delicious. Nothing to fault.

Staff were generally helpful apart from the chef. We were asked prior to our arrival how we would like our eggs cooked for breakfast and what time we would like our breakfast. When we got to breakfast we were told we could only have a full english and no vegetarian option or other options were available as we didnt fill in a form! No form was provided. The chef came out and wasn't helpful in how she spoke to my wife about the situation and she was forced to have a full english with bacon and sausage which she doesn't eat. The least we would have expected was a refund of the cost of one of the breakfasts but again this was not forthcoming. I am not sure who this place has a 9.2 rating with the attitude of the chef and the general lack of awareness towards customers. Rather than seek to make us happy and comfortable she just wanted to find out who checked us in and make sure she spoke to him about it. Which may help them in future but did nothing for our situation.

When we got to breakfast we were told we could only have a full english and no vegetarian option or other options were available as we didnt fill in a form! No form was provided. The chef came out and wasn't helpful in how she spoke to my wife about the situation and she was forced to have a full english with bacon and sausage which she doesn't eat. The least we would have expected was a refund of the cost of one of the breakfasts but again this was not forthcoming. I am not sure who this place has a 9.2 rating with the attitude of the chef and the general lack of awareness towards customers. Rather than seek to make us happy and comfortable she just wanted to find out who checked us in and make sure she spoke to him about it. Which may help them in future but did nothing for our situation.

Okay but not worth the price I paid. The internet completely failed by the second day which meant I couldn't prepare for my interview without online access, and I couldn't use my mobile service as my room was in the basement with no signal. Not suitable for business trips. This also meant I couldn't watch the TV. Every time I called the hotel staff they weren't available so gave up. The bathroom was really pokey and shower flooded. Everything else was lovely and was relieved there was an iron and hairdryer. But decent WiFi and shower are vital things overshadowed my stay. Was not worth the £270 for 2 nights sadly

The hotel is good and staff friendly but sadly the posh suit i booked was in the basement with little light and the air was heavy and damp. The toilet was tiny and I couldn't fit in it. The room was insecure and had a glass door to outside. I booked a room in another hotel as there was no away I could stay in this room even though I paid 460 pounds for two nights and had to abandon it

Good, clean and convenient hotel. Good for getting around and friendly and helpful staff. Doesn't have a lot of facilities but not a surprise as its a charming and small hotel. We were there just the one night and can't complain...it was a good experience. Just felt the parking was costly at £20 per night, which is probably double I would realistically expect to pay, if anything given its part of the hotel property.
