We had a lovely stay at The Black Swan. Our rooms were very comfortable and clean. Some areas of the hotel are a little tired, but generally it is a nice comfortable hotel. It has a lovely beer garden, which we used every evening for a pre dinner drink. We only ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was fine, nothing amazing, but it was all ok. The breakfast said served until 9.30, which is quite early anyway. We were down and ordering by 9.15, but a.lot of the things had run out eg fruit, little pasties. By 9.40 they had turned off the toaster and everything was cleared. We felt this should have been left until 10.00, or at least until the last people had finished. We definitely felt we were an inconvenience coming to breakfast at 9.15, having to ask for milk, tea, cutlery etc. We don"t think coming to breakfast at 9.15, when we're on holiday is a lot to ask. The actual cooked breakfast was generally good though. The staff were a mixture of friendly and abrupt, with some being quite curt with us. Others were friendly though. Generally we liked it there and had a good stay.

It is in the heart of the little town which makes walking to everything easy. The staff were very nice and love the hotel as much as we did. No elevator for those that over pack!

All staff friendly and helpful, food and drink good and service timely. Rooms comfortable and fan provided to cool rather warm room. Good shower but water flow not adjustable. There was no lift but staff carried luggage upstairs. Car parking provided but a bit tight and not close enough for older people with luggage!

We arrived tired after visiting elsewhere in the area. Check in quick and easy. Our room was well appointed and quiet and spotlessly clean. The beer garden was gorgeous, a great space for relaxing. The bed was so comfortable and we really appreciated the standing fan as the weather was very warm. The breakfast was great with quick service and friendly staff. Check out was quick and efficient. The whole place had a lovely atmosphere and we really enjoyed our stay with you, thank you

Enjoyed our stay only down side being lots of stairs no lift in this beautiful old building. Parking can be a challenge not many spaces and on a first come first served basis. We were lucky enough to have a blue badge so could park out front free.

Staff are amazing people. However, the bathroom was disgusting with human pubic hair on the floor and bathtub. No toiletry supplies and had to get some at the front desk. Attempted to send photos, but email was bounced back.

Great location. Staff very good. Breakfast great. Carpets throughout could do with cleaning or replacing. Dogs throughout which was fine for me. My partner is allergic and reacted in the room as if dogs had been in there.

A one night stay but will be back. Room was spacious and the bed was huge. Bathroom was clean and the toilet was fitted with soft close lids. I just hate lid slams at daft O clock in the morning. The reception staff were polite friendly and helpful. We ate an evening meal in the hotel, fortunately we ate early, as there was a lot of diners that night and the staff were struggling. The food was cooked to order we enjoyed the pie and the steamed pudding. Excellent chips. My boss had the pineapple and coconut sweet which was different and tasty. Would happily recommend the hotel.

Stayed at The Black Swan for an overnight trip. Location excellent, lovely walks from the door. Took our dog, were provided with a room close to an outside door which was great. Room very clean and spacious. Bed was comfortable. Quiet room. Staff at the hotel were lovely and made us feel welcome. Lovely sunny beer garden which we sat in and enjoyed our evening meal with drinks. Parking was tight and limited but again we were lucky to have got a space when we arrived. We were shocked about the 3 star food hygiene rating and this put us off wanting to eat here. However we enjoyed our meals after deciding we should try. The kettle in the room was also full of limescale. These are the only two faults I could complain about. I’m hoping they are working towards improving there scores on the door and will change the kettle in the room (42) Thankyou for our stay.

Room was comfy though, location excellent, and the building quaint and excellent. Would have given a higher score if staff had been nicer and room had more to it. Not a luxury hotel experience.

Stayed for 4 nights in deluxe double. Room and bathroom a good size. Comfy super king bed. Plenty of plug sockets and storage space. Tea making facilities and safe in room. Fantastic shower. Iron and ironing board in room. Lots of dining space in the hotel. Food was superb. Full English was excellent. Had evening meal a couple of nights and the food was very good. All the staff were exceptionally friendly, cheerful and helpful. Helmsley is a beautiful town too so great location. Hotel car park is small though but our stay was out of season so ok. Broadband was a bit hit and miss. If revisiting the area would certainly stay there. Had a lovely time. Big thank you to The Black Swan.

the room was really small more like a cupboard number 63 avoid if you can as its not big enough to swing a cat around as we were only staying the one night i didn't complain but if i had been staying longer certainly would on the plus side it was clean. Bar areas and outside were plentiful although when the sun comes out people are vying for the tables in the sun. Quite a lot of steps into the beer garden so be careful as one of our party tripped and that was before alcohol! The chairs in the bar areas could have been a little more plush as they weren't the best for comfort.

We started our tour on the Cleveland Way in Helmsley. After a Long day we got. a room near the kitchen wich was noisy and not really comfortable. All in all was the hotel not the price valid we payed
We started our tour on the Cleveland Way in Helmsley. After a Long day we got. a room near the kitchen wich was noisy and not really comfortable. All in all was the hotel not the price valid we payed

We had a lovely stay at the Black Swan. Very impressed with the staff very friendly and efficient. Breakfast was nice and the lunches and evening meals were very good too. Ideal location and lovely homely feel. Would definitely visit again, good value for money

Seemed understaffed and stressy. Staff quite rude at times. Breakfast was slow, and overcooked/dry. Room lacked basics such as bar of soap, flannel, or bottle of water. Not cool for £215 room. Room was comfy though, location excellent, and the building quaint and excellent. Would have given a higher score if staff had been nicer and room had more to it. Not a luxury hotel experience.

Evening restaurant staff amazing. Good pub food . Breakfast staff miserable and unhelpful . Extremely poor service . Items run out , no greeting , no instructions. Frankly look like they hate their job . Real shame as nice pub and lovely location

We had 3 night stay at the black swan and was just as good as previous stays.we are looking forward to returning asap,we were so well looked after by all,really good breakfast and good poached eggs.many thanks.

We had a big room which fitted us nicely. Check in was efficient and easy. Food and drink both good ( we ate in one night) staff were all friendly and helpful, no complaints at all!

We arrived tired after visiting elsewhere in the area. Check in quick and easy. Our room was well appointed and quiet and spotlessly clean. The beer garden was gorgeous, a great space for relaxing. The bed was so comfortable and we really appreciated the standing fan as the weather was very warm. The breakfast was great with quick service and friendly staff. Check out was quick and efficient. The whole place had a lovely atmosphere and we really enjoyed our stay with you, thank you

Service level has dropped significantly, not because of the staff but because of a new rule that you now have to stand in a long line to order anything. Food quality has dropped and parking can be a real problem.

Location is very central and located on the town square. Parking is as stated on the website, first in gets a spot otherwise it’s street or pay in the square. Very rambling old hotel with new extensions. Helpful staff and meals were enjoyable.

It is in the heart of the little town which makes walking to everything easy. The staff were very nice and love the hotel as much as we did. No elevator for those that over pack!

Stayed at The Black Swan for an overnight trip. Location excellent, lovely walks from the door. Took our dog, were provided with a room close to an outside door which was great. Room very clean and spacious. Bed was comfortable. Quiet room. Staff at the hotel were lovely and made us feel welcome. Lovely sunny beer garden which we sat in and enjoyed our evening meal with drinks. Parking was tight and limited but again we were lucky to have got a space when we arrived. We were shocked about the 3 star food hygiene rating and this put us off wanting to eat here. However we enjoyed our meals after deciding we should try. The kettle in the room was also full of limescale. These are the only two faults I could complain about. I’m hoping they are working towards improving there scores on the door and will change the kettle in the room (42) Thankyou for our stay.

We had a lovely stay at The Black Swan. Our rooms were very comfortable and clean. Some areas of the hotel are a little tired, but generally it is a nice comfortable hotel. It has a lovely beer garden, which we used every evening for a pre dinner drink. We only ate in the restaurant one evening and the food was fine, nothing amazing, but it was all ok. The breakfast said served until 9.30, which is quite early anyway. We were down and ordering by 9.15, but a.lot of the things had run out eg fruit, little pasties. By 9.40 they had turned off the toaster and everything was cleared. We felt this should have been left until 10.00, or at least until the last people had finished. We definitely felt we were an inconvenience coming to breakfast at 9.15, having to ask for milk, tea, cutlery etc. We don"t think coming to breakfast at 9.15, when we're on holiday is a lot to ask. The actual cooked breakfast was generally good though. The staff were a mixture of friendly and abrupt, with some being quite curt with us. Others were friendly though. Generally we liked it there and had a good stay.

Stayed for 4 nights in deluxe double. Room and bathroom a good size. Comfy super king bed. Plenty of plug sockets and storage space. Tea making facilities and safe in room. Fantastic shower. Iron and ironing board in room. Lots of dining space in the hotel. Food was superb. Full English was excellent. Had evening meal a couple of nights and the food was very good. All the staff were exceptionally friendly, cheerful and helpful. Helmsley is a beautiful town too so great location. Hotel car park is small though but our stay was out of season so ok. Broadband was a bit hit and miss. If revisiting the area would certainly stay there. Had a lovely time. Big thank you to The Black Swan.

I have to admit that, in my case, I didn’t enjoy at all. Staff is so inflexible, I was in a business trip. Impossible to get a cold sandwich after 9pm (arrived at 9:07) no other options in town except an Indian. The hotel is pet friendly which I like but for the rest not an option for me. A pity because I was expecting something different. The rooms are fine but too many steps and a bit caotic

You get the sense this is the best place to stay in Helmsley which is delightful. The historic nature of the hotel lends a timeless quality to it. Fabulous room with a view that makes you feel as if you’ve travelled back in time. Delicious food and wine! Highly recommended.

1st breakfast rushed but not usual quality. Bacon was leathery and sausage cold. 2nd morning ok but evening meal for my wife was not great. Belly pork not well rendered down. Meal wasn’t charged for, without question. Staff very friendly.

Had a quick overnight stay on a tour of Yorkshire with partner and four-year-old. The family room was very clean and comfortable with a solid bunk bed for the kid and huge comfy bed for us. It's right on the main square in the village so very nice for walking around. All the parking spots were taken when we were there (there was a local farm show on that day so not terribly surprising), but parking overnight in the square was just fine. Breakfast was really tasty; fresh ingredients beautifully cooked, and great service from the staff. Absolutely would visit again.

Really quite abrupt One of the coffee cups in our room contained some disgusting scummy liquid with mould on it

I was disappointed in this hotel. The decor was quite tired and worn bearing in mind it was pretty expensive, I expected more. The staff weren’t particularly helpful. We tried to get food in the bar well before the stated end of food service and were told the kitchen was too busy to take our order (menus still in the tables) which I think was bad as we were staying there! The staff were disorganised and didn’t know where things were or what they were doing, and the place seemed understaffed. Literally ignored at the bar - no ‘I’ll be with you in a minute acknowledgment! Breakfast was poor with cooked items being charged extra. No milk available and then the two tables next to us after about 30 minutes were given milk that was off. We didn’t bother with breakfast on the second day. Parking was woefully inadequate for the number of rooms. All in all poor value and I wouldn’t stay there again despite the great location.
