Royal Hotel

Hotel was generally clean and pleasant, staff were friendly and helpful. One of the reasons I chose this hotel was it has a pool, however after booking I received a message from on hotels.com from the hotel saying the pool has been shut since August, slightly disappointed by that so didn’t pack my trunks. However on arrival it became apparent this wasn’t the case and the pool and other leisure facilities were actually open! So denied a morning swim.

Room was passable, hallways were musty & unclean, hoovers left in hallways both days we were there and the hallway outside of our room had what was left of someone’s hair extension trod into the carpet for the two days we were there..I did not see any housekeeping on either day.. Staff were okay, the leisure facilities were awful.. pool was cloudy and freezing cold, steam room was broken, the sauna was okay..changing rooms smelled like there had been a dirty nappy in the bin for days and wasn’t very clean.the bedroom was clean and tidy beds were clean and comfortable but there was no toiletries provided so make sure to bring your own..downstairs the reception area and bar were Pleasant, we didn’t eat in the restaurant in the evening but we did for breakfast and that was fine..breakfast staff were nice and helpful..the best thing about this hotel is its location..the food and drinks are reasonably priced and you get what you pay for with the stay..unfortunately I don’t think we would stay again unless the hotel made some changes to the services they provide and maybe a little bit of a refurb.

Hotel was better than expected after reading the reviews, first room we were given hadn’t been cleaned when we went to it so we were upgraded to a better room, used pool and sauna, pool was nice and warm, would be nice if it was included in the price but the £6 charge each wasn’t too bad. Breakfast tasted nice and was hot too which was a bonus. Some of the corridors had an offensive smell.

Very nice hotel 2nd time here and no problems. Shame the hotel bar closes early though 10pm last orders? Other than that all good!

Odd that you had to pay for WIFI Hotel lools very opulent but rooms need updating

Magnificent staircase and atrium created a first impression worthy of the name Royal. Lack of parking available to guests was a major drawback.

Comfy clean beds but room could have been cleaner ,? Vomit stains on walls ,good choice at breakfast friendly staff ,booked here because off the pool ,didn’t expect to have to pay £6 each to use when a resident,disappointed

Brilliant location - 5 mins from South Bay beach. Room was basic as dog friendly but was clean, comfortable and had storage. Dogs allowed in bar area. Multi-storey car 5 mins away. Indoor pool at £6 a session. Will definitely come back.

If I had been told by hotels.com about the charges and difficulty with parking around The Royal Hotel Scarborough, I would not have booked at that Hotel. As it happens we sorted an alternative parking place but it would not have suited visitors who have difficulty walking. The Hotel and Staff were excellent.

Clean but tired hotel. Twin room only 1 bath towel and a coffee machine that didn’t work. One lift that was not working. Just felt like it needed some love.

The hotel was awful and disgusting The roll my heart was Number 420. The room got the mould everywhere on the bathroom and on the ceiling above our bed the bed was dirty and the bed spring was out of the bed hurt my partner pack after we complain to the receptionist they gave us room number 6 after we talk the other room we found a blood on the pillow. The caution was so dirty like never been cleaned before and it’s not big different than the first room we had mould and dirt everywhere plus the kettle was dirty we couldn’t use it. We have had very bad experience and we shocked as we should celebrate our anniversary I couldn’t believe what’s going on Unbelievable we drove about 3 hours away from my home town to celebrate our anniversary at Scarborough because we love Scarborough city and we have a good memory over there but what happened at the hotel? I cannot believe it that mould and dirt everywhere on the rooms and blood on my cushions and below. I have talk a load of pictures as an evidence I feel so sorry because our anniversary and pressure’s time should be a romantic time turn to disgusting and destroy our loving time what we been true-at the hotel rooms

Disgusting. Filthy dirty, room has not been cleaned for months.

Absolutely filthy mess of a room and not to mention urine stained sheets!

The staff was amazing at there job but the cleaner don't clean the rooms properly the shower was disgusting the mould and hairs and the drain was full of brown dirt and the smell was over powering definitely not staybthere again

Very dirty Went to reception to say and was told they would send a housekeeper up. No apologies given. They changed bedding but that was it.

Lovely building, nice entrance. Front desk staff were very helpful and friendly. Shame the room was filthy. Previous guests toothpaste all over the mirror. The bed side cabinets, lamps and headboard, wardrobe and under the bed were thick with dust. Bedding and towels were clean. When it was last decorated, they couldn’t even be bothered to paint around the fire alarm, making it look shoddy. Curtains were broken. Not sure the door to the room meets fire regulations with a half inch gap from the floor. We wasn’t expecting much for the price but it would have been nice if the room was clean at the very least.

The hotel is in a good location however it is tired and grubby. The room was thick with dust, the bath and bathroom was also dirty. It's very simple to clean/wipe the paintwork around a door handle but everywhere looked as though it had years of dirt. The bed was uncomfortable. Over all not a great experience and wouldn't stay here again. Sorry.

Fans were dusty, cracks on door frame, ceiling etcand strains everywhere, bit of toast was lying in doorway of bathroom, safety window lock was broken and hanging off

Found quite expensive for the state of the room, dirty places, horrible smell with in the room that hit noses when door opened. Good sized room for family and nice view. Hairs in the cups left for tea. Disappointed with the room rate, did the job which we needed it for just to sleep in. No breakfast included in the price which others for around the same price did have included.

Arrived at the royal hotel Scarborough to check in gave us our keys and we went to the room to put our bag's in but the room stunk of a over powering damp and fish so we went and informed the reception where they told that they would change our room to a smaller room but that didn't bother us. We went up to the second room which once again had a smell of damp but this room the walls were soaking wet with damp in the area that the bed was and there was paint pealing of the bathroom ceiling. So we again went to reception to inform them of the situation and to ask to be put in another room to this they said no. I informed them i have a low immune system due to having cancer and just finishing my latest round of chemotherapy. He just said sorry but you need to inform customer services and they may give you a refund but in the mean time he would check us out and we can go find somewhere else . But that was not an option due to the fact i can't walk far and we had got the train to Scarborough and then a taxi to the hotel and i was exhausted so we had no option but say for two nights. I felt ill while i was there so i contacted our son who took the day of work to come and pick us up i have been to the doctors when i got back and i am now on antibiotics for a bad chest infection that the doctor said was probably caused by the damp condition of the room. Iwill never go back to that hotel again and think the staff should all go and get re trained

We usually stay at the Royal when we visit Scarborough, and are normally happy with our room. However on this stay we thought the room was very dated and needed a good paint job, the bathroom door didn't close properly unless you slammed it. The two lamps in the room were awkward as the plugs were hard to find to turn on. The room was stuffy, the bed was tilted , only one pillow each and were very hard. The only good thing was the shower was fabulous.

Creaky floors and acoustic was terrible. Hence, could not sleep much. There was no view. No temp control.

What a beautiful building that looks very tired beyond the stunning Main staircase. Our room hadn’t been updated for many years. No air conditioning on a hot night. Even with the window open it was too hot and too noisy. Unable to get a comfortable drink in the late evening as only one barman and big queues. Breakfast was good in the Seaview restaurant. Only you weren’t allowed to eat at the tables with the sea views!!!

Lovely hotel, had a very nice 3 day stay, best room was the lounge/bar which was very relaxing and comfortable,very close to cafe,s,shops,pubs and tram to get to beach. Will definately stay again. The only problems i We had was that we paid extra for sea view room and it was at the side of building so could not see beach very well. Also no cutlery or plates in room to eat meals. Also on advertisements it said you could sit outside on balcony overlooking beach but we got told we couldnt use it through the day as a wedding was on but fare enough we waited and was told it would be open to use later but then it was closed all the 3 days we were there as a safety precaution. But staircase was lovely and staff were too and i would definately book this hotel again to stay. comfortable

The room was slanted not level and was like walking drunk very outdated smelly old mattress holes in walls room was smelly broken tiles in bathroom limescale all over bath and shower no parking cost me £29 on parking light switch behind a cupboard also opened the cupboard and an iron board fell on me

Was upgraded to the Royal Suit, a lovely big room with 2 sofa's and a large 4 poster bed which was so comfy

Spacious and very comfortable room with a sea view and all the amenities I required in a room, including the bonus of a coffee machine. The building was very grand and full of character and in a very central and convenient location. Would stay here again.

I didnt like the room we stayed in windows keep banging all night and we was overlooking a passage night and early morning was very noisy overall it was a very nice hotel

The reception is fantastic. Rooms ok a little tired but for the price we paid were fine . A little short of staff the ones that were there were great . I think the company were putting on the poor guy on reception he was working hard

We have just returned from a fantastic stay at The Royal. Every member of staff we engaged with were professional and so friendly, a credit to the Hotel. The room was so comfortable and clean with a lovely sea view and the hotel had character and charm . The food was delicious and served in a beautiful dining room. We cannot fault anything and will definitely be returning. Thank you!

The wife is nervous about people entering the room, so on check-in confirmed with the reception that no one is to enter the room. Advised no one will enter the room. While out, a contractor, not the hotel staff, entered the room without our knowledge, moved things, and left dirty footprints on the carpet! i.e. only way the wife was aware was someone had been in the room - concerning! as alone she jammed a room chair and table against the door. Later wife alone in the room and just out of the shower - a noticed the door handle being turned and the door pushed on by someone trying to enter the room!! However, as she had jammed a chair/table against the door even with the key they could not get it. Ses asked what do you want, and he kept pushing on the door and turning the handle saying I need to come back in to secure your windows!!! Apparently, this male contractor was cleaning gutters, but the wife jamming the door he would have walked in, she would not of heard as in the shower and then walked in to find him in the room!!! Reception, sorry, I will tell the hotel manager when he is back it. a few days later asked the duty manager said knew nothing about it and made no further comment! No one to date has bothered to get back to us and explain this unacceptable occurrence. Room 107 24-03 March 2023

The hotel itself was lovely. However there was dust on the floral arrangements that people had drawn on , we reprted it to the cleaners and they just wiped out the pictures but didnt remove the dust. The staff were super friendly and knowledgable about the area. The location was great. Good price .

Couldnt leave window open due to noise so room was too hot. Reception staff on arrival were very rude. Building needs some updating

Warm reception, good customer service upon arrival and a great hotel stay.

Only issue. On the night of the 12th the front door was closed. I got back to the hotel at 00:15. I pressed the buzzer for nearly 45 minutes with no answer. I even went to the grand to ask if they had a contact number, which they didn't. I was just about to find an alternative hotel when another guest opened the door for a cigarette. I searched around the ground floor, no staff anywhere. I went behind the counter and got my own key. As I was walking up the stairs the night staff appeared. I am sure you can verify these events on your security cameras.

We had a family room and there was plenty of space in the rooms, with a separate room with a single bed and TV. The beds were comfortable and the bedding was clean. We only had a short stay and this met our needs. Staff were really friendly and helpful

Excellent stay again from the evening reception team at this hotel where I stay regularly as a guest when doing voluntary unpaid work in Yorkshire. Only problem is the morning reception team who misgender trans and non binary people at check out with male pronouns

The reception employees were not service minded during check in and out. I arrived at 11 am and asked about the possibility of early check in (anytime before 15:00 even paid for). The receptionist asked for my name and once I gave it, the reply was No, it's fully booked even though: - he didn't even check. - a couple that he helped before me got to check in. - when I came back in the evening and asked for a floor fan, the evening receptionist said he'd look for any available in the "unoccupied rooms". Concluding that morning receptionist lied and the hotel wasn't actually fully booked.

Lovely hotel situated at the top of the cable car lift for those not as mobile. Very friendly staff, breakfast was really nice with plenty of options

This is a lovely hotel full of history, character and charm . It has a good atmosphere and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I am looking forward to staying here again, The only downside for me was the car parking was a little frustrating and spent a little time driving around to find a space!

Noisy during the night, seagulls, hotel deliveries and noise from other rooms. Comfy beds and convenient location.

Hotel was ok, but the parking was not good in the area as a whole not just for this Hotel.

Fantastic location for beach and town. Staff were great nothing was too much trouble. Stunning hotel very quirky with all the staircases rooms were functional and clean. Definetly would go back.

Great central location, which also means parking could be a chase, but not impossible at all. Great view from the terrace, although the bar wasn't in operation. Excellent value though.

Although the room and bathroom were spotlessly clean the rooms could do with updating a bit. The bed was very hard and the pillows even harder. The meals were ok but breakfast very oily. The serving staff were excellent and the reception staff very helpful.

The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was very clean and comfortable. The breakfast had a very good selection of food to chose from. The only downfall was that some of the breakfast food must have been on the hot plate so long it was very overcooked. Overall it was a very nice stay.

Everything is beautiful for the price only let down was the breakfast the day of our stay there was lots of kids who was rude and unruly we had breakfast before here when we stayed and it was beautiful and relaxing but due to the amount of kids filling plates piled high items was empty and there was a lot of queuing and waiting around

Excellent would stay again had a superb 3 course dinner food menu first class 👏to the chef 👨‍🍳 we had no problem asking for the food to be heated up, the young waitress was so helpful getting us a table which we hadn’t booked and she was so lovely tending to all our needs ….. wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again

Very convenient for the seafront and shopping. The food is really good when its waitress service and the staff couldn’t be more friendly. However when the evening meal is buffet style the standard goes down, probably because of the amount of people they are serving. The starter was really good when a set menu but very poor when buffet style. The breakfast was really good every morning even though it was a buffet. The staff were super helpful and friendly in the bar and restaurant. The hotel is Victorian with the main areas well decorated. However our room was really tired and not clean enough, the room edges were covered in dust. It was a bonus to have a mini bar fridge in the room. We had a dog with us and I’m guessing this is why we had a really old room. however we’ve been to many other dog friendly hotels and have had some wonderful rooms. I recommend that you book direct with this hotel as we booked with a supposedly ‘best price’ company and paid considerably more than charged by the hotel directly.

Arrived early, was allowed to enter room (supposedly cleaned?). Inspection of room, found dust around skirting boards. Spiders webs on window sills. Two chairs had not been cleaned, dust and food under cushions. Some sort of small creature, was on one of the pillows. The kettle was all furred up, and had not been cleaned out. Informed reception, who immediately moved us to room 115. This was a twin room, with window over front of hotel. However could not look out, because sill was 6 feet above floor level. We also didn't realise it was just above bar, restaurant. We knew that the rooms were not cleaned during our stay. But we left full bin outside room door, to empty. This was not done! Breakfast was buffet service, however bacon was dried out, tasted like cardboard. Scrambled eggs had liquid in the bottom, black pudding was died out and hard. Sausages were anaemic, didn't looked cooked. This is not the first time we have been to the "Royal" hotel. But the rooms and food have detierated, alarmingly. We will not be booking to go back to that hotel in the future.

Clean,spacious room.comfortable bed.Had the dinner and breakfast and both were excellent.staff very helpful.

The breakfast could be better nothing ready and when we got it other things cold like your toast tea and us ran out of bread how can this happen in a palace like that 12 pound but no refund

Waited to long at reception to book in had to go looking for a staff member . Toilet system took too long to fill up and TV kept loosing signal and no biscuits in the room
