Had a wonderful stay at the hotel. The team of staff are brilliant - passionate about providing the perfect level of care and attention. Attentive, helpful and courteous they really went out of their way to make guests feel welcome and content. Our room was fabulous - it had everything we needed to enjoy our stay and beautifully decorated. The bed was very comfortable, we slept so well. It was quite a warm day so the fan in the room was welcome. Set in the East Wing we were away from the main house, which was perfect as we had our dog with us. He had a little welcome pack, which was a nice touch. He loved the grounds as did we.

This was my first stay here, something good amd bad. I booked a “Parkland View” room, but at first they gave me a room that felt like an attic—it was hard to see the park view at all. I went to the front desk, and they immediately moved me to a better room. As someone who travels frequently for business, I think they should have given me a better room from the start; occupancy rates probably aren’t very high on weekdays. The standard rooms don’t have air conditioning—just a fan. so in early October, I had no choice but to sleep with the window open. The soundproofing between the rooms and the hallways is really poor. Breakfast is amazing!

Very disappointing stay – not dog-friendly or safe We requested a dog-friendly room with outside access, but the staff failed to explain that we could use a door marked as an alarmed fire escape. We were also given no warning about the pond or advice to keep our dogs on leads. Our white retriever ended up covered in what appeared to be black tar. We washed him three times, but it is still stuck to his skin. We now have to take him to the groomers and vet tomorrow. This is completely unacceptable and has caused unnecessary distress and expense. To make matters worse, part of the walking route had broken barbed wire, which could have resulted in a serious injury when our dog jumped over it. A dog-friendly hotel should provide safe walking areas and appropriate guidance. The room itself had cobwebs and spiders. I reported this to the manager, who sent housekeeping, but when we returned, the spider was still above the bed! After a very long drive, we were left sitting outside in the cold with our dogs while the room was cleaned. We were not offered refreshments, and despite asking to be told when the room was ready, we were left outside feeling completely ignored. The concierge also had very little knowledge when we asked for information about walking in the 100-acre woods. This was my second visit to this hotel, but unfortunately it will be my last. The lack of cleanliness, communication, safety information and consideration for guests and their pets was poor.

This is a magnificent hotel with fabulous extensive grounds in Ashdown Forest with a great pool and spa complex, golf course fine dining, excellent breakfasts and really well trained friendly staff.

Overall we had a very nice stay and have left feeling very relaxed. Only issues we encountered were to do with reception service. On arrival we were told where our room was and that was it. It was only when we got to our room that we had no idea what time breakfast was, where the pool was etc. Also weren’t offered help with bags which for a room far away and up 2 flights of stairs should be standard. We went back to reception and spoke to concierge Paul who was brilliant. He told us all about breakfast and that we needed to give a time, gave us a map and explained the pool. He said he’d follow up with who checked us in as we should have been told this. Ashdown is such a charming hotel with unique features, you should tell us about these things when we arrive. A lovely barman told us about the history of the building, another lovely concierge opened up the Pooh museum and explained. We had a buyagift.com voucher which caused huge confusion with reception (not sure why!) - Lydia compensated with an extra glass of fizz per person. We enjoyed the pool on both days and ate in the Forest Brasserie which was delicious. We personally found the drinks menu too expensive for what was on offer but that’s just us. On check out were told there was nothing left to pay as we had paid as we went and asked if we needed help with our bags. But did not get asked if we’d had a nice stay. Overall it was a nice stay, with some minor blips
