Roebuck by Greene King Inns

A very attractive hotel with good facilities and beautifully decorated for Christmas. Bar and catering service both very good and the evening meal and breakfast were both good. Would certainly use again.

The lady on reception was extremely accommodating and friendly. The bar and restaurant is quaint. The only criticism we have is at the bar manager and the mixologist. We were told by reception on arrival that being a Greene King chain we could order our food and drink via app at our table when we went down to dinner which we did, however the mixologist came over to our table and criticised us using the app as he said he didn’t have all the ingredients for the cocktails we were ordering. So we stopped ordering cocktails and moved on to normal drinks. We ordered some snacks to take back to our room also. The bar manager came over with our order and almost chastised us for using the app altogether which we found highly unprofessional. She then went on to say that they have had huge issues with Greene King site as they did not have alot of the drinks and snacks on the website, we asked her why wasn’t it removed as we had seen she had removed one of the cocktails I had previously ordered surely if she can do this going through the whole menu to do this would save all this hassle no?! We were completely disappointed at the attitude of the 2 members of staff especially as the mixologist came back over to have another go, by this time the bar was full and people were staring at the confrontation. Totally disappointing as the young waiters and the food were amazing shame the 2 senior members weren’t so polite. Nice budget hotel other than this and bed is comfy

The Roebuck was a delight, but you have to bring a sense of Humor! We have enjoyed every minute of our stay. Rooms are sufficient for the age the building has. The fun part was the Monty Python alike service in the bar: Q: I would like to order a non-alcohol beer A: This is the last bottle Q: When the alcohol free beer is out, could I have the Torres alcohol free wine, please? A: We ran out of that, but we do have non-alcoholic Prosecco. Q: I’ll take that The bartender disappears and returns with tears in his eyes…. A: We ran out of that as well. (Later a box was found and I could have the bubbles) Q: We would like to order some food, please. Could we have the Share Platter with Camembert? The bartender flips into a state of total distress….. A: We don’t have any Camembert left. We settled for the sharing platter with fries instead of the cheese and gave the poor chap a big tip because he was so nice and friendly. The rest of our stay, I emptied the box of Prosecco and all food was available, but this first night in the bar we will never forget. We will return! Very positive: all door handles on the 1st floor are on wheelchair height. Negative: there is no elevator to reach the 1st floor rooms with a wheelchair. We already made jokes about the “Midget Mansion”, but I expect the door handles were placed that low based on the age of the building.

Generally hotel is good but disabled facilities are very poor. There are no walk in shower only over a bath. There is only 1 disabled parking space in fairly small main car park. If this is full, the overflow carpark is down a steep unsurfaced slop to a large open area of rough stoney ground. Access to the hotel is via a number of steps and paths some of which do not have any handrail

Unsafe ground , no lighting in overflow carpark. The addition of seeds and pulses to my food, that varied hugely from accepted recipe. It should have been served seperately. It caused digestion problems . Yes I could have sent it back, buthe damage was done. Very poor lighting in the bar, therfore problem not obvious initially

The bed was very soft and didnt suit me but that is a question of preference. We had a lovely dinner with friends. We all chise the Sunday roast and it was excellent. The service was a bit hit and miss but overall we enjoyed the meal.Excellent breakfast menu with lots of choices and staff were very welcoming. Lots of free parking which is an added bonus. My biggest gripe was that we arrived with two heavy suitcases and we are both in our sixites and had to lug them up flights of stairs and along corridors as there is no lift. Overall we enjoyed our stay and it wasnt too expensive, it is a lovely old building with lots of character but it definitely needs some tlc.

Have passed this pub many times and thought how nice it was, so didn’t hesitate to book for a stay before going on to Gatwick airport. I have to say I should have gone to reception and asked to be moved to another room but didn’t so partly our fault. There was tiny moths in the room and wood lice. Not many but should not have been there. I understand that we only paid £54 for the room but if I was told at that price I’m sharing the room with bugs I wouldn’t have booked. Such a shame because the staff was great and couldn’t fault the service.

There were stains on our carpet (carpet needs removed completely). The room was musty. And being a bit warm, it was difficult to air out and cool the room at night as leaving the windows open let in bugs. I would probably stay again given the location and price but I would look very hard elsewhere first.

Clean room with everything fully functional, friendly helpful staff. Good food choices, very tasty and piping hot. Overall a great hotel for the money.

The hotel rooms were outdated and need re doing. The shower was very good and the cleanliness good Not the best place I have stayed and not sure if I would stay again

Comfy beds , Great food ! The carpet in the bedroom was horrible - dirty and threadbare - needs to be replaced !

Good things. The price, the staff, the breakfast. Not so good things. Creaky floors near the rooms.

Arrived late. Pleasant staff. Nice big twin room. Floor uneven, carpet tired and curled up the wall instead of cut to fit lol. No problems at all though. Very quiet. Great sleep. Fantastic shower. Really good value. Perfect stopover on business. Would return.

Hotel is very run down. If you are just looking for a clean bed and bit of sleep. This is fine. The walls are very thin so I could hear everything the people in the next room were saying and doing. The wardrobe back was hanging off and the shower was very old but worked so can’t complain. Decor is damaged and old. However Rut is clean and smells of floral everywhere you go. Staff were excellent, friendly and prompt. Food was ok. Cheap (£70) and cheerful for the area. I booked to be near the airport however it’s a thirty minute drive away.

The property is beautiful and the room is comfy. Beautiful gardens and my window opened to a lovely lawn with a swing from a tree and great fresh air. Room was well decorated and seemed clean except there was a slight smell of mildew when I first came in. Allergies acted up a bit. The breakfast options were awesome - had traditional English breakfast one day and poached eggs with salmon another day. Great coffee and tea and biscuits in the room fresh daily. Within walking distance is a wonderful garden center with gift shop and behind it is a jewel of a tea shop called Hybrid where they make amazing food and drinks, and there’s a balcony overlooking gorgeous green pastures and there are robin’s hopping around and cheerful staff. Regarding the Roebuck hotel staff, most were very kind and helpful but there was one lady who was very difficult. I tried to make a call out of my room and couldn’t. Called front desk and was told the phone to my room is not working, and she asked me who I was trying to call. I said just a taxi because my cell is not working with the WiFi here. (That’s another thing the WiFi is spotty). Then the lady said that they’re going to charge me for an international call. She seemed to be very negative. I said I’m just trying to call a taxi. So I had to go to the front desk and got another nicer employee who kindly ordered me a cab. But the rest of the staff were great. Overall good stay.

Staff are absolutely superb. They’re so friendly and service is excellent. The accommodation is tired and rather worn. That said it’s clean and beds are comfortable but the duvet on our bed was tiny and not the size it should have been. Little things like a broken towel rail, uneven, threadbare carpet and an exceptionally shabby headboard just made the room seem down at heel.

Ate at the establishment one evening of our stay. Side salad was excellent. The main meal was satisfactory and reasonably priced. Overall good value compared to anywhere else in the area. Upon check-in we were asked if we wanted breakfast unfortunately breakfast was only served till 9 am both myself and my daughter have chronic fatigue and health issues therefore early mornings are not great for us maybe if it had been offered a little later it may have been something we would have taken however, breakfast was not an issue so it wasn’t a problem. I did say that on a lot of bookings for this hotel it states breakfast is free. I was met with quite a firm not at this hotel ! It is £12.50 per person, which I thought the answer was a little rude given it clearly states on many platforms as free breakfast there was no issue as we were not requiring breakfast but I do feel that maybe for some this could be a little confusing and therefore should be addressed with various companies offering this hotel for booking. Like many hotels after Covid a lot of needed money spent and it has not been widely available. I do feel that although this hotel was pleasant it does need and requires some updating. I feel that although they tried to keep it clean and tidy carpet especially need to be replaced they are very worn in places. Our hotel room was a twin room. It was clean tidy in most places could also do with a little updating wardrobe. Door was broken. Bathroom was okay clean but also needs updating. We’ve paid £70 for the room so not the cheapest but also by far not the most expensive middle of the rangeI think one night in this hotel is sufficient

Staff were excellent, welcoming and helpful. The hotel does need a little bit of updating however the bedroom was spotless and the bed was super comfortable. The food was good quality and tasty. Definitely recommend this as a quality hotel at a reasonable price!

Staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, I couldnt fault them. The hotel is a bit of a rabbit warren to find the room but still full of charm. Will be back

Place is tired - carpets frayed, paint chipped, room very dated. Our bathroom smelt musty but overall the room was just about comfortable enough. We only saw one member of staff despite it being a busy Friday evening, who was covering the bar, reception and serving - doing her best but we just felt sorry for her being overworked. Whole place just needs some investment and could be nice

This was only a brief overnight stay prior to an early morning flight but no problems with check in or quality of rooms which were good. Staff very helpful. Good value for money.

Pleasant hotel/pub set in the Ashdown Forest. Room and bed were very comfortable although the shower control was extremely stiff to operate and would be impossible for someone with rheumatism/arthritis. Bus stops right outside so ideal for hikers/walkers

There was no quiet area where the music was not playing. The staff were helpful and attentive. Food was excellent. The continental breakfast was mostly cereal, bread and cake products - felt it was missing some cheese or eggs. The breakfast included in the room rate was excellent. Would definitely come again.
