Mawamba Lodge

Best hotel of our Costa Rica trip yet. What a special place! The physical space is beautiful. The wildlife on the property and the gardens and general space were exceptional. Loved seeing toucans and monkeys right by our room. Loved walking to the ocean and river and town so easily. Wonderful boat tours of the national park with Steven. He blew us away with his knowledge of the flora and fauna of the area. Great responsiveness to emails and any questions or concerns. Also wonderful night tour with Humberto!

The property of Mawamba Lodge is beautiful. There is a deck over the river with several hammocks and chairs that were just so peaceful and relaxing to just swing and rock back and forth. The pool area was beautiful to lay by and the restaurant food was actually really good. The activities were well planned. I took 2 boat tours back in to the canals and saw lots of wildlife there that was amazing to me. The guides were very pleasant, in particular Moises Cordero. I was with him on my night walk and saw plenty of nightlife, snakes, frogs, toads, spiders, etc. He was very knowledgeable about the animal species and was able to share a lot of information that was helpful to understanding the history and animal life of not only Tortuguero but Costa Rica in itself. Mawamba Lodge is situated in between the beach and the canals so it was a short 5-10 min walk to get from one side to the other. The only thing I can improve is the fact there is no A/C at all. There was a fan over the bed and you had to keep your windows open at all times making it easy for people to see inside your room. Otherwise, I would highly recommend choosing Mawamba Lodge first if given the opportunity.

The room was clean, the bathroom spacious. The staff were friendly and helpful. There was a nice pool.

Large, Private Cabana with hammock. Sandwiched between a river and a black sand beach. Quick 1 km walk to a charming town. No AC or internet in rooms.Grounds were lovely with lots of wildlife. Front desk staff were very delightful and helpful. Transportation directly from La Pavona to Mawamba dock. Lots of activities to do at the hotel for a reasonable price such as walking, kayak and boat tours. Pool lounge chairs were always full. Restaurant food and service were mediocre, and over-priced. Stray dogs and cats on property begging for scraps and attention. Overall, one of the best resorts in Tortoguero.

Beautiful property with basic but comfortable & clean accommodation. The beds were comfortable. All the staff we encountered were friendly. Lots of communal areas to chill in hammocks or chairs. Good varierty of food and drink options. Just a 15 minute walk to town.

Beautiful property and lots of activities to enjoy. Can't recommend this property highly enough we had the best time.

Excellent stay at Mawamba lodge. Gardens around the ground are great and we saw sloths and Toucans a short walk from our room. Breakfast was great as was the dinner we had at the restaurant. Pool can get quite busy with families and children. Town is only a short walk away or they can provide a river taxi. Also took part in the tours arranged by the hotel which was fantastic with a very knowledgeable tour guide. Would highly recommend it visiting Tortuguero

Mawamba Lodge is very lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed the facility, walking along the beach, and strolling through the village of Tortuguero. Mawamba has a recycling station where you can pick up a bucket, walk along the beach and pick up garbage left behind by the tide. We like thinking we may have made a little difference for the turtles.

Die Anreise per Boot ist schon ein Erlebnis und die schnelle Fahrt auf dem kurvigen Fluss macht einen Heidenspass. Wenn man das Boot verlässt ist man gleich bezaubert von der wunderschönen und top gepflegten Anlage. Ein kleiner Pool lädt zum Schwimmen ein. Die Zimmer sind klein, aber funktional. Eine Hängematte vor der Tür und die, die in der Anlage verteilt sind, laden zum Träumen ein. Highlight unseres Aufenthaltes war die frühmorgenliche Fahrt durch den Nationalpark mit dem Kanu, da man mit den kleinen Booten noch tiefer in den Dschungel vordringen kann. Das Frühstück war sehr lecker, für die anderen Mahlzeiten sind wir lieber in den Ort gelaufen und abends mit Stirnlampen auf dem unbeleuchteten Weg zurück.

What a place to stay. Free boat transfer to and from the little airfield. Really nice food and drinks. Rooms don’t have AC but are wide open and well ventilated. However those are small points compared to the entire area of the hotel and the surroundings. You walk one way to the beach, it’s full of little seating areas, pontoons and places to just enjoy the nature and surroundings. We spent evenings on a pontoon watching the sun set, afternoons in the hammock on the balcony your room has, and the hot days by the pool. Iguanas randomly wander around the place, and visited the pool on our last day. Howler monkeys occasionally swing by, and there are endless birds, one we didn’t notice was 2 meters away from us whilst we were enjoying the pontoon. We went in turtle laying season, and saw a wild turtle laying its eggs. There are boat tours, night hikes, canoe expeditions, hikes and other activities, all with endless wildlife around. Truly a wonderful place and experience.

Bonito lodge en el medio de la naturaleza. Habitacion muy amplia y limpia. Desayuno muy rico. Instalaciones preciosas y bien cuidadas (piscina, jardines,restaurante..)

Wir waren zwei Nächte in der Mawamba Lodge. Der Empfang war okay. Wir hatten einen Bungalow der zweckmäßig eingerichtet war. Die Dusche war jedoch hinsichtlich der Nutzung gewöhnungsbedürftig. Wir haben abends einen Night-Walk gemacht, welcher sehr gut und interessant war. Haben Frösche, Spinnen sowie auch die Heuschrecke mit Horn gesehen. Unser Guide war sehr nett und hat uns einiges erzählt. Morgens nach der ersten Nacht hatten wir auf unserer Bettdecke etwas Kot entdeckt und wussten zuerst nicht, welchem Tier (Fledermaus, Maus etc.) wir das zuordnen sollten. Wir sind früh aufgestanden, da wir uns zu einer Kanutour durch die Kanäle angemeldet hatten. Zuerst ging es mit dem normalen Boot Richtung Nationalpark, dort sind wir dann ins Kanu umgestiegen (Wir waren 4 Personen). Nach kurzer Zeit hat es zu regnen angefangen. Dieser Regen ist immer stärker geworden und hat nicht aufgehört. Doch statt der Guide die Tour abgebrochen hätte - man hat eh gar nichts gesehen - sind wir bei extrem heftigen Dauerregen u. Gewitter diekompletten zwei Stunden im Kanu rumgefahren.So was ist unverantwortlich und das läuft für mich unter Abzocke. Am späteren Nachmittag war wieder Kot auf dem Bett. Dann haben wir eine Fledermaus gesehen, die durch den Bungalow geflogen ist und vermutlich in einem kleinen Schlitz in der Decke verschwunden ist. Daraufhin sind wir zur Rezeption gegangen und haben das geschildert. Wir konnten dann zum Glück für die zweite Nacht in einen anderen Bungalow umziehen.

Great lodge at Tortuguero. Silent & clean and only a short walk from the village.

No water pressure at all. Hot water practically not available because of the water pressure. Rooms require upgrade. Metal fixtures rusty. Towels and furnitures are very worned. Br

Nous avons passé un bon séjour au mawamba lodge. Les chambres sont propres mais manque un peu de place pour ouvrir les bagages dans la chambres .les parties communes sont agréables. Le restaurant bon, bonne organisation pour les excursions avec un guide top

Really beautiful property. The room was okay. The bathroom definitely needed updating (toilet barely flushed). It’s about a 15 minute walk to the town, and the path is only lit partway. So bring a headlamp if you’re going for dinner! The property is very nice with lots of places to sit and enjoy the birds and views.

Alejado de todo, tranquilo, muy buena la comida en el restaurante, la atención del personal excelente, su ubicación entre el canal y al mar es perfecta. Las instalaciones necesitan algo de mantenimiento, sobretodo las habitaciones, pero son cómodas. Duermes con el sonido del mar.

Sehr schöne Anlage, etwas außerhalb von Tortugero, was jedoch zu Fuß oder mir dem Boot schnell zu erreichen ist. Frühstück und Abendessen waren sehr lecker. Der Bungalow war etwas in die Jahre gekommen und sehr dunkel. Zum Glück hatten wir ein Signature-Bungalow, der sehr großzügig und schöner als die Standard-Bungalows war.

My husband and I loved our time here. From the bus pick up in San Jose, the boat ride to the lodge and everything the lodge has to offer, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The lodge has so many activities to offer, we always had something to do. The food and drinks were delicious! The rooms were clean, however, the walls are very thin, so bring earplugs incase you have noisy neighbors.

Overall we enjoyed our stay here. Pros: the room was very clean, the amenities (especially the pool) are really great, the staff are helpful, and the landscaping is beautiful. Cons: the rooms don't have AC so it gets very hot during the day. the walls are very thin so you can hear your neighbors if they are packing loudly. The hotel is accessible by quick water taxi from tortuguero or by a 1.5 km walk on a dirt road. From la pavona, take a water taxi to tortuguero. Don't take the hotel's private transport service from la pavona which costs $30 per person. I feel like the water taxi service from tortuguero to the hotel should be provided by the hotel for free--they have the resources to do it, but they don't because they would rather nickel and dime you for everything.

Fantastic nature & wildlife. Ask for a boat tour with Miguel. Long Caribbean beach nearby. Our dimly lit Bungalow a bit rustic, no aircon/fridge/kettle. Pool area, bar and restaurant good.

L'arrivée jusqu'à l'hôtel est déjà une aventure, 1h de bateau dans la rivière au top. Hôtel situé proche du village accessible à pied, personnel accueillant et serviable. La chambre est juste acceptable pour le prix un peu élevé. Attention pas de réseau mobile et wifi seulement autour de l'accueil et restaurant/piscine. Repas très bon mais prix élevé comme tout le Costa Rica Le tour en bateau à la découverte des canaux était top, le guide a partagé sa passion de la nature et des animaux. Si vous souhaitez vous couper du monde c'est le bon endroit.

Beautiful open air cabins and joined cabins in a property between the Caribbean and a river. The town is short walking distance and pretty cool. Also there are no cars. The only negative is there are a lot of cabins put together will only screens to muffle noise. For some reason the one next to me became the love shack with two different couples getting it on.

Sitio recomendable para alojarse en Tortuguero. Acceso al pueblo en 15 min andando. Sin embargo, creo que es bastante necesario que pusieran aire acondicionado, ya que hace demasiado calor en las habitaciones y a veces es dificil descansar.

Lage ist wunderbar. No air condition im Zimmer. Bei den Temperaturen ist das eigentlich ein Muss. Außerdem heizen sich die Hütten mit ihren Wellblechdächern tagsüber unerträglich auf. Da haben wir leider bei der Buchung nicht aufgepasst. Die Zimmer hatten kein Wifi, was man verschmerzen kann. Der Kaffee beim Frühstück ist limitiert auf 3 Tassen. Ab 4 kostet es extra. Also, nix für Leute, die viel Kaffee zum Wachwerden brauchen. Overall: don’t go. Es gibt bessere Unterkünfte fürs Geld.

The good: lots of tropical animals around, nice pool, tours from the property, helpful staff, fairly secluded, nice view of the canal, good food and drink. The drawbacks: thin walls to the rooms, screen windows up high that don't cover, lots of jungle noise, no hot water at the sink, no WiFi in the rooms

La estancia no ha sido de mi agrado. La atención de un chico en recepción ha sido casi nula. No nos aportó ninguna información acerca de actividades que ofrece el hotel ni acerca de cómo iba a ser el proceso de recogida. Al llegar al hotel, poneros de acuerdo para la recogida a la hora de la salida porque es super importante hacerlo el día anterior porque no lo informan y es algo que se tiene que hacer con antelación. No hay aire acondicionado en las habitaciones, ni refrigerador, ni cafetera, ni microondas. De noche los insectos invaden las zonas comunes y los escarabajos negros pequeños están por todos lados, en modo exagerado. Para ir al centro tienes que caminar 15-20 minutos, y de noche es peligroso, ojito con eso. Si llueve mucho os van a cancelar las rutas en canoa y si pagaste las entradas al parque en la página del gobierno pues pierdes tu dinero, por experiencia os digo, perdí 30 dólares. Piscina agradable y tranquila. Cantidad de árboles frutales en el hotel y eso ha sido una maravilla, al igual que tener la playa al lado. Un entorno muy natural y bonito. Por la atención y otros detalles 5/10.

We had to change our reservations a few day before we arrived but couldn’t because of the hotels no change policy. We called but no answers. We messaged and they finally answered two days later. We asked for an exception. They said we had to do it through hotels.com. Hotels said we would have to ask the hotel but they couldn’t get a hold of them. Each said we had to contact the other until we missed our check in. All we wanted to do was get in later. In any event, make sure you don’t have to change your plans at all.

First, we had stayed at this hotel in, I believe, 2021and had a very good experience. We booked this visit based on that experience. Your site sent us information stating that basically there was an active COVID infestation and strict sanitary precautions were to be observed, which included intermittent temperature checks. This appeared to come from the hotel but as I found out came from Hotels .com. It took me two days to contact someone from the hotel because no one answered phonecalls or text messages. Finally I was able to contact the hotel via email after speaking with someone on your site. Turns out the information

Das Personal an der Rezeption hat uns nicht weiter über Aktivitäten informiert und es lagen keine Informationen aus. Die Zimmer sind nicht leise, da auf der einen Seite offene Lamellen und auf der anderen Seite keine geschlossenes Fenster, sondern ein offenes Fenster mit Fliegengitter hatte. Das Essen im restaurant war gut, man hatte eine gute Auswahl. Positiv war, dass sie gleich an der Rezeption zum Anfang nach Allergien fragten, und die Allergene auf der Speisekarte sah. Leider fehlte dem Personal ein Lächeln.

Staff, setting, and food were all awesome. It was a peaceful, natural hotel. Prepare for rain. It’s a part of the experience, and there were lots of breaks in the rain, even some sun around the pool in the afternoon. The night walk was unforgettable, the little town of Tortuguero so interesting, and the water transport to and from Pavona docks was so mesmerizing and unique. I loved the staff who work at Mawamba! Big shout out to the restaurant staff, chefs, and bar staff.

A luxurious, well-placed resort with very friendly and attentive staff. The ladies on reception were fab, as were the restaurant staff and the tour guides. The wildlife in the grounds is exceptional, and the design and decor of Mawamba is flawless. Loved it.

Amazing wildlife around the hotel. Could hear the ocean at night. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The tours were fantastic. Will be back!

Needing Improvement: -No hooks of any kind to hang bath towels, pool towels, wet swimsuits, etc. -Safe was unusable with broken lock and unbolted -Reception desk staff and restaurant staff unfriendly; more Pura Vida -no AC -broken lamp but fixed after two days -not the best food; first day vegan options were limited (soup only) but later improved What we liked: -Beautiful large grounds next to the beach and walking distance along the beach to town -room looking at the river -Swimming pool -great shower -refillable water - nice kayaking tour with guide

The grounds were beautiful. The room was basic but met all of our needs. We were able to walk to the village. We tried walking down the beach but couldn’t due to roughness of the sea.

Hotel muito confortável localizado não muito longe nem muito perto do povoado de Tortuguero, o que faz a experiência de imersão melhor. Quartos bem típicos , espaçosos, com uma rede na varanda para ficar relaxando. Café da manhã e piscina muito bons, um ranario legal. Água potável disponível em dois lugares

El hotel es precioso, las habitaciones (la estándar en nuestro caso) sencillas y algo pequeñas para una familia de 4 miembros pero muy bonitas. El entorno y las zonas comunes muy bonitas. La piscina una maravilla y resulta muy cómodo para visitar el pueblo de Tortuguero a pie sin necesidad de contratar un desplazamiento. Además puedes ver muchos animales sin salir del hotel. El único aspecto a mejorar es el tema de la comida. Solo probamos el almuerzo informal en el bar de la piscina y nos quitó las ganas de probar más. Pedimos unos perritos por 9$ cada uno y era minúsculo, media palma de la mano acompañado de 4 patatas tipo chips de bolsa. Hay mejores alternativas para comer en el pueblo caminando por la playa a 10 minutos.

Sehr nettes und freundliches Personal. Bei Ankunft wurde das eigene Restaurant offeriert aber keine Alternative oder Transfermöglichkeit ins Dorf, der Fußweg ins Dorf ist nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit unheimlich.

A really lovely resort with access to both the Tortuguero canal and the Caribbean beach. Great pool, good food, attractive unique rooms. Friendly and attentive staff and excellent communication throughout the booking and stay. Would definitely return.

Super hotel car à l'écart du village tout en étant accessible (1/4 heure à pieds). Superbe jardin et piscine très agréable. Chambres plutôt simples. Petit déjeuner au top!

Beautiful place in the nature and close to the sea. Hotel is great, very quiet, where you can find easily animals like sloth, bird, reptiles, et . Food can be better. But we enjoyed our stay and the tour early in the morning in the river.

The actual lodges are just ok. Beds are not the most comfortable and rooms are very simple. Food on the other hand is amazing, probably the best in Tortuguero

I didn't think the food at the restaurant was cooked very well. Twice I order chicken and it was overcooked. The people who worked there were pleasant enough but it felt like they didn't like their jobs. The only exception was our tour guide. Sadly, I can't remember his name but he was great. He was the guide who met us and went with us to the La Pavona Dock.
