Volcano Lodge, Hotel & Thermal Experience

We had a lovely stay. The room was spacious with good aircon and spotlessly clean. Great black out blinds so had a lovely sleep. We loved the wet bar and forest thermal baths. Even in the rain it was a fantastic experience. The massage we had was fantastic and the spa room had the windows open so you could hear the sounds of the forest. All staff were delightful from check in to check out. We would return.

We loved this place and after our stay were very surprised we didn’t see it recommended more. The grounds especially,well maintained the birds in the area were gorgeous and a highlight of breakfast a lovely pool to enjoy with hot springs either side of the pool which were fab. The pools were all open really late which meant we could enjoy a cocktail while the kids played in the pool after a busy day In the fab area. It’s located at the top of the road from downtown fortuna but we didn’t have a car and never struggled to get an Uber either down to the town or around to the main attraction like the volcano hikes or zipling etc. Staff at both the restaurant and front desk were both super welcoming and friendly. The only think if I was being picky is our room was a little dated looking, a bit dark and the shower was a bit of pain to use but overall we LOVED our stay here.

Great hotel and ammenities at this hotel. Hot springs and wet bar are great open till 3am.

An excellent rain forest resort if you're looking for beautiful grounds with gardens, large thermal pool and Jacuzzi options, good variety of tasty restaurant options, full included breakfast buffet, pool, swim up bar by the Jacuzzi pools, jungle sauna, short perimeter hiking trail (too many roots for running), and friendly/helpful staff. Rooms are comfortable and adequate. A great getaway for couples, and good variety for families (including playground, pools, chill-out lounge with pool table, foosball etc). Would definitely return 👍

Ok resort, nice atmosphere but the place slightly outdated. Restaurant was fine and breakfast what expected. Omelets and waffles made to order really nice The main pool nice and clean but the termal pools were really dirty, feels like they never have clean them. Both leaves (which is acceptable since under trees) but the water had like a brown mudd loosing from walls etc when moving around. The place had a very nice garden full of birds

Wonderful location, beautiful grounds with a nice walking trail and MANY birds. Restaurant was good, incredible views of Arenal volcano. Room was nice I would look at the tour options, many are better and cost less than what they offer.

We had a fantastic stay. The thermal springs were wonderful and we had a superior room which had its own individual hot springs pool/hot tub. The staff were excellent and very welcoming. The shared areas and sauna were wonderful. Meals were lovely but more pricey supper in keeping with the upscale location. Would stay again.

The thermals pools were dirty and mold

O quarto é muito antigo, tudo é velho. O quarto cheirava a lugar fechado há muito tempo. Você precisa pedir a um atendente a manteiga no café da manhã, pois no buffet eles só colocam margarina. Longe de ser um hotel 4 estrelas. Com certeza há melhores opções na regiao pelo preço que eles cobram.

Be careful with the thermal room pool beacause my wife got a skin infection on our first night

Restaurant food very expensive and not very good. Not allowed to bring snacks or drinks in pool area was a unfortunate. Hotel grounds were well kept and rooms were clean

Ice machine was infested with bugs. Rooms were outdated with bugs everywhere. Property and surrounding area were beautiful.

We checked in to our room and found it heavily infested with bugs in the seating areas, curtains and bathroom. At least 50 to 60 insects. When we complained of the problem the staff sent someone to spray poison all over the room. When asked to switch rooms, we were told there was no other room available unless we paid an additional $120 per night. Staff refused to refund the unused night and the Manager refused to speak with us without a significant fuss. Terrible service and staff! Expedia did not refund the stay. We left and went elsewhere. Avoid this hotel at all costs!

Good, albeit older property with dated bathrooms and dim lighting. On the positive side, they have a great location, attentive staff, good breakfast and hot springs on location. We found using the hot springs at night after long hikes during the day very convenient and relaxing! Lots of beautiful birds can be sighted on the property. Would recommend but don’t expect luxury!

This place worked fine, but it is pretty dated. The hot springs are kind of gross to be honest, but the pool is nice. Restaurant and food were pretty good. Room was clean, but a little dated. The whole place just looked like it was in need of an overhaul.

Wunderschöne, top gepflegte Anlage mit toller Thermal Landschaft. Sehr gutes Frühstück. Tolles Erlebnis. Einziger Minuspunkt, Zimmer sind nicht gut schallisoliert, man hört den Verkehr von der nahegelegenen Straße.

The hotel is great for the price. I hope they renovate their rooms with a little more lighting.

The Hot Springs were absolutely incredible. Way better than a lot of the other hotels in the area. For that alone, it’s definitely worth it and would recommend. Main reason for the three star over a four star is that there was no hot water, it lasted less than a few minutes for a shower. I have never stayed at a hotel that runs out of hot water in just a few minutes. Luckily it’s Costa Rica so the cold water is not that bad, but nevertheless not super acceptable. Additionally, the room was super dated and the bathroom did not have any ventilation just windows. AC did not get very cold either.

The landscaping and gardens on this property are lush and painstakingly manicured — a beautiful tropical rainforest. The staff are kind and attentive. There's a plethora of thermal pools and hot tubs to enjoy on the property. They serve an excellent breakfast that's included. We had dinner at the restaurant one night and it was just OK. Not bad, but definitely not the best meal we had in La Fortuna. The rooms themselves are a bit dated, particularly the bathrooms. That didn't bother me too much; the only detail that really did bother me was the lighting in the rooms. At least in the room I was in (superior thermal), there were no lamps! No lamp by the beds. No floor lamp. Nothing but really bright, harsh overhead fluorescent lights. I found it really jarring, especially since (unlike updating a bathroom, for example) it's such a simple and inexpensive fix...just put a lamp or two on the bedside table. Replace the extra-bright fluorescent bulbs with soft white ones. Literal pennies and the problem would be fixed and the visit would be so much sweeter. That said, I absolutely loved the private thermal pool outside my room. I loved it so much, in fact, that it was the only one I ever got in during the entire 4 nights I stayed at the hotel! I never put a toe in the communal pools or hot tubs — not because they didn't look tempting, but just because the privacy of my own was so nice and convenient. It's definitely worth the splurge to upgrade to private thermal.

Nice place to stay but the rooms are a bit smaller and congested compared to the other resorts that we stayed during this trip.

This was a nice place. The downside I have for this property is that the walls are super thin you can hear someone cough and flush in the next room. It was a gated community so it felt super safe.

Very nice property, lots of greenery and very nice feel to it. Overall a nice stay other than a few things. If you need internet go somewhere else. It was very inconsistent, on and off and frustrating. They sent someone to fix it right away, restarting the router, but it didn't help. Staff is nice but the management isn't, conveniently unavailable multiple times when I wanted to discuss a possible fix to the internet that didn't involve then coming into my room every day multiple times. And then no hot water. Also the food in medicine at best. Oh, and paper thin walls and the hotel needs serious updating to the rooms and pool. But nice grounds and hot spring pool on site.

Great property, great service. Food was under-seasoned but otherwise very good. Room (junior suite) was fantastic with private thermal pool. The only big negative was a horrible mattress. It was like sleeping on cement floor. I have been in severe pain the whole vacation as a result. Front desk and housekeeping did not provide a solution saying the mattresses are brand new. No softer mattress or topper available. No attempt to fix the issue.

Amazing staff, grounds are well kept.

It was nice to have the hot springs.The onsite restaurant had a very extensive menu and decent prices. The grounds were lovely with so many flowers, trees,animals and well maintained. We had added an extra night on our stay a week before and had arranged with the reception staff to have the 2 reservations combined but sadly that was not handled and our room key cards quit working at a inconvenient time. And then instead of the staff being apologetic about their error they were rude. It was inexcusable. They also had the annoying towel card system. We were required to wear paper bracelets to come to the breakfast buffet. If this is a must then utilize the bracelets that are also the room key. We did feel that the hotel is overpriced especially if you have to deal with petty things like towel cards and paper bracelets to get your breakfast. Mexican resorts are far more advanced and user friendly in these areas.

We stayed for 8 nights, 7 days and used this as our "home base" while we explored La Fortuna. We did 4 excursions and 3 rest days. This was the perfect place to come back to after a day of adventure, and the perfect place to relax on our rest days. The staff was lovely and very helpful, especially those in Sura Restaurant. We ate dinner at Sura each night and the food was delicious and beautifully presented. You can tell that they value service and quality. The landscaping on the property is beautiful, and well maintained. The thermal pools were wonderful for soaking after a long hike or adventure. I wiuld highly recommend Volcano Lodge.

The staff seem to be genuinely kind and caring people, from the front desk to the landscape staff and everyone in between. Can’t say enough about the property. The staff was helpful with scheduling activities, and no fault of theirs that the activity wasn’t as advertised. We rode horseback to the waterfall meaning we rode horses up one side of a mountain and had to walk down to the waterfall and back up, was told it was 400 steps and it was literally 9000, straight down and back up.

Terrific location, beautifully kept gardens, spacious rooms, and delicious buffet breakfast with many choices...oh and the thermal spa is perfect and never over-crowded! Three layers, with the top one being very hot (it took some acclimatizing), middle level like a hot tub, and the lower level warm bath-like. Great location with a less than 20 minute drive to the nearby attractions and town for dining.

The property is beautiful and has everything you need. It is not walkable to other areas (town for example) but a taxi ride there is easy enough.

Such a beautiful property! Absolutely loved staying here and experiencing this area of Costa Rica. The room was nice and clean with air conditioning. The property it self was stunning with all the plants and walking to breakfast was peaceful every morning. The included breakfast was delicious! They switch a few things up each day which was nice and even had someone making omelets or waffles. The hot springs are in multiple areas and one has a swim up bar attached which was really relaxing. Did not use the sauna but also saw that on the property. Over all very lovely staying here and everyone was very kind. I would go back!

Grounds were lush with tropical foliage - room had patio where we sat outside and watched/listened to creek, birds, misty rain and viewed Arenal volcano. Lots of Thermal pool areas to choose from, not crowded. Breakfast had good selection.
