Parking not great, long way with a lot of suitcases. Difficulties checking in staff very busy. Rooms lovely and just as described. Excellent location in the centre of York.

The staff are great and the room I had was very cosy, perfect for a Jan cold stay, it’s got heating but they do provide an additional heater in case The pub itself is very popular - kudos to the owners but it did mean I never got a chance to grab a drink there - and also the guest wifi doesn’t really work for streaming when the pub is busy Overall as long it’s very centrally located, just 10min walk from the station - and therefore perfect for a sightseeing trip

It wasn’t clear to me that this hotel is actually a pub. Our room was next to the beer garden. We had people eating/smoking right outside our bedroom window. Fortunately it was on,y Thursday night. I imagine it would be unbearably noisy on a Friday or Saturday.

We were given Room 12 which is situated in the courtyard and we expected it to be a little noisy whilst the pub was open. We were not prepared for exactly how noisy it was we had to listen to loud conversations and people leaning up right next to our front door. We tried to drown out the noise with the TV but the signal was poor and we eventually gave up. I looked at getting another hotel as it was that bad,we realised it was not going to be a relaxing break and the price we paid over £360 for 2 nights I don't think it unreasonable to be able to relax in your room. The room was clean if a little tired a lick of paint is needed as are new tiles on the bathroom floor which are broken and sharp in places. The food in the restaurant was good and the inn itself is full of character but for the price I don't recommend the room that we stayed in.

This is what you hope for when you stay at a pub - history, beautiful location, walking distance to everything, comfortable bed, all the usual mod cons and a delicious breakfast. Of course, for anyone not familiar with staying in a pub, I want to highlight that it closes at 11pm. You will absolutely hear the noise from the pub before then, but the staff close up very efficiently and you can almost guarantee quiet from 11:10pm (which is rather rare and impressive!) The staff are very friendly and helpful, and the location and history cannot be beat - who wouldn't want to stay where a historical figure was born? And to be literally next to the Minster is an amazing bonus. Highly recommend for those comfortable with the late nights, and as you are there, you might as well join them until closing.

Hotel was ok - old and had character which was nice and great location. We were in room 11 Guy Fawkes Cottage, the room itself was nice enough, spacious, clean and nice size bathroom but it was located in the pub courtyard. It was extremely noisy - the speaker for pub music is just outside your bedroom door so you basically have music in your room from late afternoon to late evening. There is also a covered garden room just outside your bedroom door - there was luckily no one sat in there on the first evening but on the second there was a group of people sat in there until about 10.30pm - they may as well of been in our room with us as could hear them as clear as day and they weren’t being especially loud just talking! When we booked a double room with garden view this is not what we were expecting- you had to close the curtains as soon as you were in the room because any punters in courtyard could see right in! I think there should be a warning when you book this room letting you know that you’ll constantly be able to hear the pub music and hear customers if they use any of the seating areas literally outside your bedroom door - fine for people who like to be out until late in evening but if you are like us and out all day and return earlier I advise you don’t book!

Checkin was very strange. isn’t a checkin counter (understand it’s old) we checked in over tray of dirty cups and dishes on table near a sign that said “receptionist”. We were early, so they said we could leave our bags there by table behind the dirty dishes and they’d put them in our room when ready. That was it. This is a seventeenth century structure so be prepared. It feels like that. we had room at very top (14). It was “a suite” and was strangest, oldest, creepiest room I’ve ever stayed. room was clean, appointed with very old furniture and creepy photos. could have been an attic, large odd rooms and spaces. watch your head! A CON was the lack of instruction from staff. No info about our strange room and figuring out how to work things. instruction pamphlet about the room, history, fire escape safety, and how to work things would be nice to have. Lastly, room slanted greatly to right, not quite 45* angle. Many flights to get to room, stairs tilted so that a metal rod was placed to hold stair landing secure. That was interesting. In closing, this certainly WAS an experience. Know what to expect when you book here and you’ll have an interesting historic stay!! Not great service, it’s a tourist trap so the staff can’t give hotel guests any real attention or keep track of who’s coming and going. I wouldn’t stay here again, but can certainly say I’ve been and it was a strange experience.

Very unique property with amazing views of the minster and so incredibly close! We stayed in the top room which is basically its own apartment, such a great view of the minster and super quirky room! This room didn't disappoint and was amazing. You're paying for the location and be mindful it is an inn, not a hotel, therefore service / check in is done at the bar. This was a little suprising and concerning at first given the hotel price paid, HOWEVER, you are paying for a stunning view, location and awesome rooms.

Very historical and quaint with central access to tourist areas. Wi-fi signal was very poor and intermittent in the room which was also tired and poorly maintained. Great staff, location, historical quirkiness, but property undergoing scaffolded exterior maintenance as was nearby buildings allowed for early morning workman wake up calls! Good food, drinks, outdoor indoor ambience however, residence? Not so much.

Very well situated for the City centre and easy walking distance from the train station. All attractions easily accessible within short walking distances. The inn is very busy and the food was very nice. The room we were in was clean but it was certainly starting to look tired. This is the second time staying at the Guy Fawkes and I would be happy to stay there again.

quaint hotel with nooks and niches however a bit dimly lit nearly came a cropper twice on the bedroom step and the shower was really dangerous without a non slip mat. however staff very good and cleanliness great

Hotel was lovely room really clean and bed very comfy lovely breakfast

Overall we enjoyed our stay. Not the quietest hotel but shortly after 11 pm, it became quiet enough to sleep. One very old piece of furniture (armoire) in our room had its door fall off after it was opened, hanging on by a very thin nail.

Lovely location and undeniably atmospheric, this stay was nevertheless disappointing. I desperately wanted to love it and I really truly tried to. Check in was great, initial impressions were good and the room was comfortable. However there were some serious issues. Firstly, every time the people upstairs moved, the glass chandelier rattled. And I mean rattled. I coped. The next morning I stepped into the very small shower. It was dangerous. The water was excessively hot and the temperature control was broken. I had to get dressed and go to find help. The lovely member of staff was very helpful, but admitted it was difficult and likely needed a new part. He did manage to reduce the temperature. Having eventually showered, I wanted to get ready...no mirror at all to dry my hair, put makeup on, check my appearance. The bathroom mirror was tiny and too high. At 5' 2" I could see my eyebrows! Nothing else. Attention to period detail? I think not and anyway, the Georgians had mirrors, so I cannot understand why The Guy Fawkes Inn can't provide them. They didn’t have laminate floors though and this room did. The extension cable stretched to the kettle was unsafe. I stayed in the four poster room and would have loved to draw the curtains round the bed, but they were decorative strips. All in all extremely disappointing.

Room was beautiful and well decorated for the age of the building. We were on the top floor so be prepared for wonky stairs. Main floor is lively with patrons but noise did not carry - was loud outside with music til 11pm and guests dining but we had our window open to be fair and we did not mind it at all. Bed was comfortable and staff was very helpful - great location beside York Minster and walkability score excellent. Highly recommend!

The history of the property was interesting. Bed was very comfortable. Room a bit cramped and dark.

We stayed in the Belfry Suite (in the attic above the pub). This was by far the most unique room we have ever stayed in. The sweet includes a bedroom, bathroom, a living room, and a room that we used as an office. Low slanted ceilings with beams, brass fixtures, wooden furniture, velvet curtains & ottoman, cracked leather couches, wool blankets - the colors and textures in this room add so much to the experience of staying there. There was a mini fridge and electric kettle available for use. The wifi and television worked great. Location is only a few steps away from shops/food/Shambles. There is a Tesco Express & a Sainsbury's nearby. The pub staff are very friendly here, the food is good, the atmosphere is very comfortable. We ordered breakfast on our last day. The food was good ( we got the Full Yorkshire & the pancakes with strawberry compote and clotted cream). They also serve you coffee or tea, and there is a side table with juices and cereals- all included in the breakfast price. Housekeeping does a great job, and are very friendly. **There are a LOT of stairs to get up to this room. And once you unlock your door, there are MORE stairs and it is a very steep and narrow staircase. Not everyone will be comfortable getting up those steps. Also, the ceilings are low and slanted. If you are tall (and even if you're not!), you will be hitting your head constantly. All of that being said, this room is AMAZING and we would rent it again in a heartbeat! HIGHLY recommended!

We stayed in Room 2, with a four poster bed. Although the room was lovely, and the bed extremely comfortable, we barely slept due to the noise. The room was right over the bustling, busy bar, so an early night was impossible. We were woken early both days by staff vacuuming at 7am, noise from the hallway and stairs, and on the second morning by scaffolders outside. If we return we will definitely ask for a room in the back of the hotel, away from the bar.

A really great place. We had the top floor with the brass tub and windows looking right out at the cathedral. Very quirky decor and not at all suitable for those with mobility issues, but one of my all-time fave hotel rooms.

My room (5) at Guy Fawkes Inn was small, but comfortable. It had plenty of power outlets for charging my devices. The radiator in the room was perfect, but the one in the bathroom did not work. The bed was very comfortable. The room could stand a bit of a deep cleaning. The check-in process was a bit chaotic as the check-in staff also manage the bar and the restaurant. The location of the Inn within York is brilliant. When preparing to leave, I asked for a taxi to be called … I was told that there was no need because right around the corner was a taxi stand that was manned 24 hours a day. After checkout, I went to the taxi stand … I waited 45 minutes for a cab to the station. The restaurant at the Inn was excellent with a varied menu including vegetarian and vegan options. The on tap berry cider was delicious.

Check in nightmare. Bottom of stairs outside very very busy pub toilets on way to restaurant! Took ages lots of moving bags. Breakfast ok.... apart from they bring your hot food.... THEN ask if you want toast. Then go and make it. So if you wait everything is cold.

Great historical hotel, central location, excellent staff.

Totally delightful place. Our room was fabulous and the bed was so comfy. Location is also fabulous as right in town and an easy walk to everywhere. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful.

If you want an un-historic, un-genuine and un-quirky stay in a hotel only several years old,then there’s a bland chain-hotel somewhere for you. Otherwise,come to this hotel. Yes,it has several “wonky stairs” (quoting a previous reviewer )and yes,it has signs of age in places,and yes, it’s not laid out in geometric angles, but that’s the charm of this type of hotel. It’s hundreds of years old,for goodness sake!! Hundreds! You’re part of history! The staff were very welcoming,friendly and accommodating. We had a need for left luggage,late checkout,and an ill friend who needed some extra attention- No Problem. The pies in the restaurant are delicious. The breakfast was all we wanted. The hotel is an easy walk to the train or taxi rank. It’s also very convenient for Minster and the beautiful old streets nearby. I’ve visited the restaurant and now the hotel. All four of us visitors loved it. It’s a fantastic experience and reasonably priced.

Wonderful stay, great City location, friendly staff, lovely room, very tastefully laid out considering the period of the building. Stay here if you want to enjoy a historic experience. The bed was so comfy and the pillows were like sleeping on clouds. Lots of tea, coffee, milk and biscuits in the room, can't fault the stay, look forward to staying here again.

We really enjoyed our night in the Guy Fawkes Inn. The location is amazing - less than a minute from the entrance to York Minster. The area is pedestrianised, busy and safe. Staff were very helpful and the food was very good. Breakfast had to be ordered the night before but this wasn't an issue for us as the breakfast was very good. The building is several hundred years old and in really good condition. There is a car park about 300 yards away. Parking, like in any other city, is expensive and needs to be factored into the cost.

Excellent location very close to York Minster and convenient for the city centre attractions and shops. Hotel has an amazing historical connection to the gun powder plot.

You won't get a better location for a stay in York. Overlooks York Minster and is on the very edge of York City centre. The accommodation itself is very York, with plenty of room and exceptional value for money. I've stayed at a few places in York, including The Grand and when I return I'll be coming back here.

Loved this historic building in a wonderful location in the heart of York. The staff were all brilliant, really friendly and very helpful. The breakfast was great too. For a hotel right next to the Minster I wasn’t expecting it to be so quiet at night but it was surprisingly peaceful and the bed was sooo comfy.

What's not to love? It's right in the middle of everything. The view from the room was amazing. Right outside the hotel you're in the historic shopping area, with its tiny roads, quaint shops, and more haunted locations than you can count. And when you're done, have a pint downstair in the Guy Fawkes pub before heading up to bed. Just watch out for the wobbly floors and tilting stairs. But after almost 500 years what do you expect. All part of the charm. It was a brilliant stay

This historic property where Guy Fawkes was born 500 years ago has amazing atmosphere. Not a single wall, floor, ceiling, door or other architectural feature is straight, which adds to its interesting provenance. The room was really well decorated with 4 poster bed and modern bathroom. Area to sit, TV etc. Location is literally across the street from York Minster, and 5 minute walk (or less) to the Shambles. Parking was convenient 5 minute walk, but you can drop off baggage just 20 meters from the front door. Would gladly stay again.

The hotel boasts a charming, historic setting with a generally pleasant and cosy atmosphere. While the cleanliness was adequate, our room did not align with the online photographs. You would expect for £428 for two nights, that a complimentary breakfast would be included, this was not the case which was a notable disappointment. The staff provided satisfactory service, though not exceptional. Overall, the experience did not fully meet the expectations typically associated with a 4-star establishment. Additionally, guests should be aware that food and beverage prices within the hotel are quite high. The staff recommended parking at Marygate and Bootham Gate, which would have amounted to £125 for two nights. However, we independently found parking through the JustPark app for £40, resulting in significant savings. I was expecting much better. The aesthetics were brilliant but everything else was okay at best.

One of the worst places I've ever stayed! Arriving there and the location was great, a couple minutes walk from York Minster, but that's pretty much where the highlights end. Going in you have to go straight through the small pub, everything felt really cramped. As soon as we went in, we knew we wouldn't be staying long! The room we were in was right next to the courtyard, so we heard everyone outside drinking, smoking, listening to music up until 12am when the bell for last orders rang. Safe to say, we didn't get much sleep that night! Not to mention the room was absolutely boiling, far too hot! Breakfast was also bad, really awkward with everyone who stayed the night in one room, with the radio on really quiet. The food tasted as bad as it looked, I thought the salmon was out of date! And it was so salty. We checked out early (was originally supposed to be there for 2 nights) and found somewhere else - much better! And we couldn't leave quick enough. It nearly ruined our weekend away, but thankfully we were able to leave early. I definitely wouldn't recommend staying here. And most other reviews say the food is bad, and the prices of drinks too. The history is interesting and the only thing it has going for it, otherwise avoid at all costs!

Full of character Beautiful furnishings. We had small executive double room , bed really comfortable , en-suite modern and clean Breakfast huge and delicious ! Across the road from York Minster Only minor complaint was that the bar closed early (around10.30) Other than that it was perfect and will definitely return
