The Old Lodge

The Annexe where I was originally booked for 3 nights ( and spent two !) was VERY poor - ground floor room had barred windows ( none opened ) and looked out directly at brick walls. It smelt musty and the carpets looked dirty. It was noisy from passing traffic and bin men !). I asked if I could transfer to a room in the main Hotel building and was able to for the 3rf ( final ) night and that was V nice by v V comparison. However the food I had in the restaurant that evening was VERY poor in both quality and quantity as well as quite expensive. No alternative nor reduction was offered when I pointed this out……. There’s no parking at the Annexe so one had to park in the main Hotel car park and walk between there - less than ideal in the dark and rain ! All in all a disappointing experience although my dogs ( who stayed in my car ) enjoyed running around the Hotel garden area.

Hotel set in lovely gardens, ideal if u like old properties with character.The staff very friendly and obliging. Plenty of parking and very convenient for the lovely town of Malton 👍.

Fantastic place to stay, very friendly staff, great food, the surroundings were out of this world. Cant wait to go back.

Great look until you get in the front door. Receptionist not interested, room not upgraded since the 1970s.dirty carpet, broken shoddy furniture, peeling paint, broken window panes, mould in the showe grout, shower was barely a dribble. Resturant not open for dinner- the cheff coulnt be bothered to work despite resturant being a key reason I chose the property. Breakfast was ok, waiting staff were polite and helpful.

Beautiful building and grounds and super staff.

Lots of characture in this small hotel. Stayed in the annex which is within the building and satisfactory. Had all that was required for a shrot stay. One drawback during our stay the weather was hot and no air conditioning other than a fan. It would have been nicer to have airconditioning. Also there was limited room for evening dining but plenty venues within 5 minutes in the town.

Lovely historic country house set in beautiful grounds. In the centre of Malton, with all the pubs, restaurants , shops & railway station within easy walking distance. The Old Lodge is full of character with large comfortable bedrooms. With very friendly helpful staff.

Lovely stay at the Old Lodge. Nice to have our anniversary celebration acknowledged with a room upgrade. Everything very clean and the hotel is a magnificent old building which is has real character both inside and out. Easy walk into Malton and local restaurants, parking is plentiful and facilities although quiet offer everything you need. Breakfast is amazing, top quality full English to start the day.

A surprisingly tranquil location within a busy town. Malton centre is just a short walk away. The Old Lodge is a historic place with an aristocratic past. The rooms are large and furnished classically with modern facilities neatly incorporated. There is a large garden area to the rear ideal for a quiet stroll or to relax with a drink. The staff are helpfull and the restaurant is smart.

Room dated, lack of housekeeping, leaving one pack of biscuits and emptying the rubbish is lazy Dirty coffee mugs and glasses left by the bed is a poor show The whole room needs a good refit so the kettle will work on the tea and coffee area rather than having to use it on the floor

Checked in room not ready, no towels, no soap, no coffee, damp, spiders and not cleaned, carpets stained, windows mould around. Asked for money back as sub standard and would not give us any other options

We spent a little more than we could have, to secure a "Luxury" room at the Old Lodge. When we got there, we found wallpaper peeling from the walls, damp patches in one corner on the wall/ceiling and the place just generally looked down at heel. In the bathroom, there was mould and rust on the fixtures in the shower, the shower wasn't brilliant, with a loose bracket for the shower head, and the seal was missing from the bottom of the shower screen. That was found when we had finished our showers, leaning against the architrave, for some reason. The wash-hand basin was cracked, as well. The whole room/ensuite could have done with a good scrub. The breakfast was lovely, but I wouldn't want to stay there again. :-(

The rooms are always clean, the staff are always friendly and the food is stunning. Always my go to hotel in Malton.

Booked a room that appeared ok as were just travelling through. Stated room was not at main building but in the old cottages and had parking! Well the old cottages were a drive down the road, unload bags, drive back up to main building, park vehicle and walk back down! Old cottages should be condemned. Absolute horrible! Filthy carpet, mould around tub, and room was about 4 feet from very busy road!!!!

The bed was a four poster bed with a super king size mattress. Unfortunately the bedframe squeaked as you get in and out of bed which is not ideal. Everything looked clean except the carpet which could do with a deep clean. The room has a view of the beautiful grounds, albeit obstructed by the TV.

A beautiful property in a gorgeous location. Friendly staff, good food, and a lovely ambiance. Although very clean and comfortable would have benefitted from a little attention to detail like cleaning the limescale from the shower head. This did not however impact on our stay and we will be back.

We arrived to find our room very dusty and bits on the carpet behind the bedside cabinets, the wall and ceilng had lots of cobwebs and a small patch of mould on the ceiling, we asked for the room to be dusted again, the housekeeper that came to do it seemed reluctant as it was home time. The bed was not very comfortable either. The shower screen didn't stop water going all over the floor as there was no seal on it, so a slip hazzard when you got out of the shower. And when there was a heavy rainstorm the rain water was running down the wall, we asked to be moved that evening, but there were no other rooms until the following morning. The hotel staff moved our things into another room for us while we were out, this was for our last two nights, this room was far superior to the room we previously had. In our opinion the hotel is in need of lots of TLC. Sadly we wouldn't stay there again.

Arrived and told we were given a free upgrade which we were delighted with! However we were given a room with 2 single beds, which we hadn’t booked so were given a room with a double. I understand this is a very old building, and we actually love that, however the cleanliness and decor were awful. The bathroom was just disgusting, mould everywhere, dusty dirty floor and splashes up the wall of god knows what!! Curtains were hanging off the rail and were filthy. The only saving grace was the bed was comfy and we slept well! The headboard was so scruffy and not pleasant. There’s simply no excuse for this! You can’t blame the fact it’s an old building on these issues. Some serious cleaning and updating is very much needed. It’s a shame because we felt this place could have been so much better with a little care. We stayed in room 16.

Just had a 3 night stay at The Old Lodge with my 7 year old son. Everything was as good as it could be, amazing room overlooking the grounds, really comfy beds, nice bathroom, everything nice and clean, staff were brilliant really friendly and professional.. we didn't eat in the evening here we ate out every night but the breakfast was lovely plenty of choice for my son... Couldn't ask for more really and Malton is a lovely little place lots of shops and pubs ... Overall I'd give The Old Lodge 10/10 !!

Pretty average room. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was massive and had a bath with shower attachment. Tea-coffee/biscuits available. Our group was in the ‘annex’ which wasn’t part of the main hotel and certainly didn’t feel 4*. We weren’t aware of how far away from the main hotel we were. Rooms varied greatly in size and decor.

WiFi hopeless and curtains and blinds let the light into the room

Quick and easy check in and out. Very comfortable beds in a large clean room. Excellent parking and easy access to the town. White a bit of noise from outside but for the rates and everything else about the hotel this is a minor point. The rooms were quite dated but I knew this when booking and it also felt like a very minor point for the stay. Overall had an amazing stay!

We enjoyed our stay - our only complaint was our room 17 was above the kitchens - and a large extractor fan was very noisy every morning just after 7am.

Beautiful building in a nice market town, with good links to Whitby, Scarborough, Bridlington & York. Reception, bar, restaurant all nice and decorated well. Lovely staff who are both welcoming and friendly. The town itself has good amenities. Plenty of bars and pins which do nice food. The negatives I can only speak from my own experience in the room I was staying in. It is in definite need of redecorating. It is obvious the style they are going for due to the building itself (clearly a listed building), but I'd say an upgrade in decor is necessary for the room I stayed in. The bed in my room (wooden four poster) was the creekiest bed I've ever slept in, resulting in 2 restless nights. Overall solid, with some areas for improvement.

Stayed in old lodgings, was nice to be away from main building. Receptionsit was having some sort of trivial work chat with another colleague during my check in, it came across as rude. No wifi in room, only in kitchen, mold on blinds. Pillows and duvet flat, needs replacing. Spacious rooms, felt like an apaprtment. Lovely communal kitchen/living room. Microwave would make it a lot better

Fantastic hotel in Malton, the food capital of Yorkshire. We loved our room, which was kindly upgraded. The room was huge and comfortable with great views of the gardens. Bathroom was also spacious with a roll top bath and separate shower, a great place to unwind and relax. We also had breakfast at the property which was good, although slightly on the pricey end. The location is excellent, and you can walk into the centre in 5 minutes. Overall, highly recommended and we will be back!

A upgrade was a lovely surprise and our room was very spacious.

Nice big room and bathroom, comfy bed , could benefit from Aircon but there was a fan in the room which was nice on a hot weekend secure parking at the main building, nice location for getting to York or Bridlington

The bed was broken with around 5 slats on the floor which I didn’t notice until late when going to bed. I slept on the other side as didn’t want to complain around 11pm. Told the lady upon checking out and she said the manageresss would call me. 72 hours later, still nothing

I wanted to like it - but for me it was just okay. We were only looking for a bed to stay in overnight during a weekend visit to York, and so expectations were not high anyway. We were warned ahead of time by the management that they had an event that evening -so was not surprised to find no one able to help us check in. It took 3 attempts at finding someone able to do so - and about 30 minutes of waiting. Not a great experience for us when we had been driving all day and were tired.They were incredibly shortstaffed for having an event -and had appeared to have no one available at the front desk for other guests. Maybe next time hire some college kids to come help out while the party is going on. At least an extra hand or two. Also had no parking available either -as the party guests all had taken every space. We parked "illegally" for a few hours at our own risk until some of the guests had left. Otherwise, the place was a very basic room with a separate toilet/shower room, bed was very small for a double, and we had a hard night's sleep due to being cramped. Next day, breakfast was wonderful (included in the price of the room) and definitely made up for the inconvenient last evening. Excellent food and service in the morning! I did appreciate that. I recommend making sure there is no party going on if staying there - Unless you're part of the party of course! I did appreciate the headsup from management - but I didn't realize it was going to be an issue til we came.

We arrived at The Old Lodge - absolutely blown away at how beautiful the main building is - only to be left really disappointed when we realised we weren’t staying in the main building (this was not made clear when booking the room). On check in, the receptionist was really rude and not welcoming - we arrived at the location, the room had a really bad musky smell. Stains on the carpet. The bed was comfy and there was Wardrobe space, with a small TV mounted on the wall. However, the bathroom cleanliness was appalling - we reported this to the receptionist (a different one) and we received an apology. During the night, those above us were walking around and it was extremely loud, people coming in from their evenings out woke us up etc. overall, it was a place to put our head down but I wouldn’t recommend.

Really enjoyed our stay, staff super friendly and very helpful., location and parking first class. When we return to Malton we certainly will try to stay if its available.

The Old Lodge is a lovely hotel with beautiful grounds and comfortable rooms but the main standout thing for us was the service - because we were going to a wedding we had to deal with very weird checkin times. Gracie explained everything to us and did everything she could to give us a perfect experience. Gracie's service made what would have been a very stressful travel situation into something pleasant and comfortable and we had a great time staying at the Old Lodge!

Booked through Hotel.com. The photos give you an impression that you are staying in a lovely old building with nice grounds surrounding it, but in the small print. You are actually in a building 100 metres down the road near the town. You can drive down and drop off luggage but will need to return car to hotel car park. The path was closed due to utility repairs, so you had to walk on the road . The front entrance had no lighting so needed to use light on phone to go down steps. While carrying all my luggage. The drain at entrance also had a slight smell of sewage. The room was a good size. TV very small. Room was clean but paint peeling off one corner and carpet badly marked. WI-FI was terrible in room and lounge room. My room was next to road and was quite busy and noisy. Actually didn’t use it in the end as it was so bad. Layout of building not well indicated. Entrance to main hotel very tight and not lit very well. Original entrance closed. Never went to main hotel to check out restaurant and bar as it was quicker to walk into the town. When I complained (politely) on arrival the receptionist passed me the key and directions (bad photocopy) and just walked off. Probably fed up of complaints as the two people before me were asking for there rooms to be changed. Very disappointing experience.

Stayed here last year - very convenient for our weekend, with great access to to the town for an evening out. Friendly and attentive staff.

From the moment we arrived at reception everything was perfect wonderful staff and an amazing atmosphere, breakfast fantastic I’ve never seen such varied menu for breakfast,and evening meals wonderful thankyou to all at the Old Lodge we will be back.

Lovely old lodge and good location. Bus stop outside takes you to Whitby. Plumbing could do with up an upgrade. Other than that a very nice stay.

The hotel was within easy walking distance to the town centre but situated in a quiet area of Malton. The staff were cheerful, friendly, competent and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend this hotel.

The hotel has genuine character and real history. Breakfast was excellent. The grounds were large and full of rabbits. There is a public park behind the hotel which is good for strolling and relaxing. The town is a 5-minute walk away. The service was impeccable.

The restaurant was closed which we wernt told or would not have booked this as it was a distance to go for food as no where in town open the breakfast was terrible as no kitchen open

Cheap for area, breakfast must have been caviar. £18.95 per person!!!! Is it possible to eat that amount of food for brekky and not be a TV greedy guts? We didn't even try.

It is a traditional country hotel, the young staff were very helpful (especially Gracie the receptionist)but they were let down by the standard of cooking in the restaurant as i ordered chiken kiev which took 30min to arrive and was quite raw in the centre,of course i sent it back and it took 45mins to replace it by which time my wife had finshed her meal and was twydilling her thumbs and i had lost my appetite! However, the room was very good but unfortunately lacked any toilet rolls which we had to ask for

Lovely old lodge hotel, very helpful staff, quiet room with view of garden. Evening meal on our first night exceptional, the steak was sublime, full english breakfast set us up for the day. Very enjoyable we will certainly return

A much better hotel than the rating. A touch tired and the plumbing is noisy due to the age of the building, just needs a few floorboards raised to fix, but the bedrooms are very good. Breakfast was overpriced at £18.50 though and nothing outstanding.

Beautiful place, excellent dinner

We enjoyed our stay at The Old Lodge and found our room very comfortable. The staff were always polite and helpful and we found the bar and dining facilities very satisfactory. Dinner in the evening was excellent as was our choice of wine. Our only minor complaint was at breakfast when we found the choice of food very small if one opted for anything other than a cooked breakfast. Hardly any fresh fruit and fresh breads. However the cooked full English breakfast was very good.

We stayed at 4 different properties over 4 nights and the dinner here was by far our favourite; bonus points for having an allergy-friendly menu with allergens actually on the menu rather than in a separate folder
