The Alpine Pass Motel was a cozy place to spend a cold (winter) night after hiking around Arthur's Pass! The room was warm and the kitchenette was well-stocked with dishes - also appreciated the laundry on site to dry out wet hiking gear! There are fun DVDs, books and crossword puzzles available in the office, and Fi was very kind in taking time to give us detailed information about hikes in the area. It's a well-loved place for good reason!

Our cabin/unit was cute & cozy. The kitchen had everything we needed. Heating good & bed comfortable. The owner was very friendly & gave us plenty of information. Unfortunately the weather turned really awful with wind & rain so we were unable to venture out.

Lovely cabin great for myself, husband and 2 children. Kitchen area was perfect for cooking our meals and inside was lovely and warm with outside temp being -7 degrees . Great selection of things in the office to borrow we had a Hobbit marathon and played checkers.

Owner was seen outside picking up fallen sticks in yard after a stormy night -- just a small indicator of the wonderful care he takes. A cozy night with incredible views out the windows!

Nice spacious 1 bedroom unit with 2nd bed as well. Well stocked kitchenette. Absolutely immaculate. Many renovations done over the last years to an older building. Owners take pride and so friendly and helpful at check in. When asked to have a unit where we could park close due to husband having difficulty walking, they gave us a different unit with fewer steps. So thankful. Perfect nights sleep in comfortable beds. Lots of blankets for if the night got chilly and you didn’t want the heater going to sleep. Perfect location on the village.

I was warmly welcomed by Pete the owner who was helpful getting me set up, giving me tips and directions to the hiking trails. I received a heads up email a few days before my stay about the restricted food choices in town which was also very helpful. Cottage 9 was really big with 3 beds in an upstairs room, a vast living / dinning room with full kitchen and large bedroom. The only problem if you have enough people to fill all the beds you are still left with a single bathroom. The place was clean but could use a serious refresh, the furniture and equipment are very dated except for the windows and doors that have been upgraded. A good coat of paint would help in some area and most importantly the mattress, that will make or break your stay...... definitely broke me. Hard as a rock with a pronounced sagging, felt like an old 20 old mattress, I ended up sleeping on the large sofa where I finally got a couple hours of sleep. The other thing that I've noticed that need attention was the back and front porch, both full of spider web. (see pics). Separate from the Alpine Motel review here are a few observations about the town/location. There's not much to do in Franz Joseph and my recommendations is one night only unless you are doing the long 8hrs trails. Lacks food options, isolated, plan accordingly.

This was the perfect place to stay on our way through Arthur’s Pass. The cabin was comfortable with a separate living/kitchen area from the bedroom. Our room (8) was away from the road and train tracks (we only heard one train come through around 9pm). The host was friendly and accommodating. We were able to do a load of laundry (wash and dry for $10 NZD).

Great location and plenty of space in the accommodation. Our room was tucked in a corner plot so no view which would have been nice. All in all we enjoyed staying here. Would recommend it if you want to stay in the Pass.

Our party of 4 had 2 units. The larger one was very spacious and had a fire stove which kept us cozy and warm. The space heater in the larger bedroom worked but did not put out much heat. The second unit was quite chilly and there was no heater in the bathroom. We were here on one of the first cold nights of the season. Not many options for motels in this area. This one was fine for the one night we were there.

We have had the most amazing stay at Alpine Motel Arthurs Pass. Our host Fiona has been so lovely! She sorted an extra night accommodation for us, after snow canceled the transalpine train we were booked on. She provided us with a shovel so we could make Snowy the snowman and helped us out with anything we needed. Highly recommend this cosy home away from home.
