Madingley Hall

Excellent location and mainly helpful staff and really wonderful gardens. Ideal for a weekend stay or for a family event. Good value for money. No lifts for more elderly folk which should be made clear when booking.

This was a 1-night stay for work. The free car park is about a 5 minute walk. Rooms cannot be accessed before 4pm, but I was able to go into the cafe/bar and sit and do some work. Room was lovely if basic but still comfortable. The TV was small and not really viewable from the bed. The ensuite was a shower over a bath. WiFi was okay. The cafe/bar did lunch and evening meals but small menu/choice, and not expensive. The included breakfast in the morning (served from 7am) was good and had a great choice of hot and cold.

Unable to access any dinner due to a wedding.

Breakfast excellent. Car park is now quite a walk from the main entrance so bring an umbrella in case of rain. Breakfast really good. My bathroom fan wasn't working well and there was damp on the ceiling. They let me in early which I am very grateful for.

Great place, beautiful building with great facilities

Really enjoyable 2 night stay while exploring Cambridge. Breakfasts very good with no complaints, lovely building & grounds. Only negatives were that the only dining available was more a cafe than a restaurant & there wasn't a nice lounge to relax in afterwards. It would have been ideal to relax with a drink in the evenings in one of the old rooms like the Stuart Room with an open fire in it. Instead we ate both nights at The 3 Horseshoes pub which is a 5min walk & is highly recommended.

well maintained gardens but difficult commute and limited dining reasonable breakfast

The house and grounds are stunning. The rooms are basic, but this does not matter to me, as long as the bed is comfortable, which it was. The breakfast was good. The evening meals were limited in choice, but fine for me. Great to be able to sit out on the terrace and look onto the manicured lawns and topiary. My only gripe was that people were moving around in the early hours and this was very audible, but that’s not the fault of the property, except for perhaps making the doors less slammable. The hall is pretty close to Madingley park and ride for getting into central Cambridge. I called in at the American cemetery nearby, which was moving. The pub just down the road was very attractive. I really enjoyed my stay.

Its a lovely old manor house set in its own lovely grounds and is part of Cambridge University. It is set on the southern side of the city. Check out is a very civilised 11am. It has a spacious bar with a garden terrace which does a limited menu but there is a pub a short walk away if you want something more substantial and a larger selection of beers. Breakfast is comprehensive and good quality. If having a cooked breakfast and there are not many guests booked in I would advise eating near the start time of 7am/7.30 weekend as, like most buffet style breakfasts it is lovely when it is first put out and from my experience a bit overcooked when it has been on display for a while. I would imagine that if you stay when there are plenty of guests this wouldn't be a problem as the items on the buffet would be replaced more often. It might be a personal thing I would prefer the plates were warm enough to stop them cooling the meal in which case, for me, it would be perfect. The staff are lovely and eager to make your stay as pleasant as possible. I have found that If disabled, they will bend over backwards to cater for you. I find it to be an oasis of calm and a good place to unwind after spending hours driving or sightseeing. Maddingly Park and Ride is nearby so you can dump the car and buy a £4 return ticket and avoid all the camera traps the very expensive car parking and the suicidal deliveroo cyclists often with no lights and riding through red traffic lights in the city.

Staff was nice and welcoming. The property looks really nice outside but the rooms are dated. I and my friend stayed in single rooms. My room was dusty and the bed did not look freshly made when I arrived, while my friend told me that her toilet was not properly cleaned with visible skid marks. The area is far from public transport and could take around an hour from Cambridge station if taking the bus.

The toilet seat and rim were dirty, like might be encountered in a public loo! The sound insulation room-to-room and room-to-corridor was particularly poor. The second point would be difficult to remedy; the first point was a shame because, otherwise, it was a lovely building in very nice gardens with good service and a good breakfast at a very reasonable rate.

The grounds and gardens were excellent. The room: Toilet had clearly been leaking waste water for some time. Bath had black mould extensively. Wardrobe and safe within reeked of pot. Hall had a very strong mildew smell. Staff seemed that this was not new.

We had a really nice 2 night stay. The building and grounds are amazing. Our room was very nice with a comfy bed and soft comfy pillows and duvet. We had four windows with lovely garden views. Room and bathroom were clean. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room. Check in was easy as was check out. Breakfast was excellent one of the best we have ever had. There was cooked help yourself buffet and continental style breakfast as well tea coffee juices yogurts fruit. Everything you could possible want. The staff at breakfast were so friendly and helpful nothing was too much trouble. One lady even offered to take my husband and I's photograph. We had a wonderful stay loved it and will definately stay again when in the area.

Hall was lovely and stunning from outside with easy access and plenty of parking. Check in was quick despite the queue. Room was easy to find although quite a few steps to contend with, and the door numbers were faded Room was very basic and although the bedding was clean, there were hairs in the shower and the remote control was filthy, with ingrained dirt around the buttons. Felt it's never been cleaned. The valance sheet also looked stained like it's not been removed and washed. Top quilt sheets for clean. Size was ok for a single, had everything needed including a large wardrobe. Breakfast was very pleasant good quality and plenty to help yourself to.

Great breakfast, clean rooms

No heating despite the cold spell. We were told it was university policy not to put on central heating until November. What a silly way to determine when heating should be on. If we had known earlier we would have cancelled our stay. On this occasion I was disappointed the room was not cleaned throughly; it was superficially cleaned but there was long standing dust and dirt over the radiators and the telephone. Very poor experience which is unlike what we had experienced on previous stays

The rooms are quite sparse, bland and tatty but functional, in agreement with many other reviews I’d say they are more like student accommodation or nursing home rooms. With a small amount of time and money this could be improved by things like replacing of the grubby silicone. This is also true of the dining room and bar (the bar really is resembling a nursing home lounge and totally soulless). I could overlook many of these issues to an extent if the service was good, unfortunately this was the main issue with our stay, staff were not unpleasant but looked like they were just there to do the bare minimum and not going out of their way to welcoming. Our first morning breakfast we were the only guests left in the dining hall, bizarrely the 3 staff present stood right next to our table, one even leaning on the chair next to myself and began a conversation amongst themselves discussing work related issues, after a while the older and presumably senior member suggested they move away from the guests, really this should never happen. On our second morning breakfast, we arrived at 9am only to find most of the hot food items empty, on asking if these were being replenished we were told this was on its way, after 20 minutes some eventually came out but some items remained empty. This meant we were able to starting to eat at around 9.25. 9.30 on the dot the staff started clearing away around us.

Estate is gorgeous, staff super nice, rooms are clean but are very simple.

The inside had been modernised very tastefully but it wanst until i got to the room and settled in that i realised how this the walls are. I didnt notice any noise from the other rooms until someone needed the toilet, then i realised how thin the walls are as i could hear everything. All night everytime someone went to the bathroom!!!!!!!!

Large tower twin room with good view over gardens. Decent shower but very variable temperature. Replacement tv on desk not original walll mount gaveimited view. No evening hot food available at bar.

What a stunning setting. As it is still part of Cambridge University the bedrooms are basically for students. The small double room we were in is basic but with beautiful linen, good quality towels and curtains. The building itself and the gardens are wonderful to walk around and enjoy. Highly recommend. Use madingley park and ride to get into the city centre.

The hotel is located inside an absolutely gorgeous building that is also used as the continuing education classrooms of Cambridge. The main hall is also used as an event venue that is frequented by other colleges of Cambridge. There are multiple gardens outside of establishment that are very large and made a morning or evening stroll quite lovely. The bedroom area in comparison is much more modest, as the rooms and hallways of this area was very much Bauhaus inspired - simple, clean, and comfortable.

Fabulous hotel within easy reach of the city centre. Great for a large group staying as we were for our son's wedding. Breakfast abd evening bar meals excellent. Only complaint would be that the wifi was very patchy and we often had no signal

It was ok, single room offered the basics well. TV was small and could only be viewed if you were in the bathroom. Lovely building. Little or no water pressure with a very very sensitive hot/cold dial. Pretty noisy, every time someone in a room near by goes in or out the doors bang loudly. Great staff and food and drink was good in the evening. Breakfast was basic and in the galley layout, which was novel.

The building was beautiful. The rooms were dated and in need of updating, the floor in our shower room was peeling up. There was a TV in the room but it was tiny and to the right of the bed which gave me a stiff neck if I wanted to watch. The 'Bistro' was basic and only sold very basic food. The breakfast was plentiful but served canteen style and from heated dishes, not cooked to order. I would suggest this needs some work to be classified as a 4 star hotel.

My room was located on the ground floor facing the courtyard, so I had a lovely view, but on the negative side a path went right by the window so there was not much privacy. The room was clean and had everything you would need including a fridge, kettle, iron, ironing board, fan and a safe. The free WIFI wouldn’t work on the first night, despite assistance from the gentleman on reception, but thankfully worked for the rest of my stay. The TV signal wasn’t very good so a lot of the channels I normally watch at home had no signal, which was a little disappointing, but not the end of the world. The Bathroom was small and had not been designed particularly well as the heated towel rail had been put low down, so when your towels hung on it, they were right next to the toilet brush, which was not particularly hygienic. There was nowhere to hang a towel when you were in the shower, other than the back of the Bathroom door, so that wasn’t well thought out either. A couple of the areas of the Bathroom also needed attention, including both taps having a loose piece at the end of the spout, which resulted in water spraying out to the side, a broken light pull and the shower head could not be tilted. Breakfast was provided, but on the second day the plates were cold and most of the food was also on the cooler side. Despite a few issues, I would stay again.

Very impressive site as we turned into the drive. When we checked out the reception staff member gave us a great tip about not driving into Cambridge because of the extremely high parking costs. Instead they told us where the nearby Park & Ride was. A very convenient and very must less expensive transportation option that we wouldn't have known if not for her. We also enjoyed the buffet English breakfast, which was included in the rate. Finally, there was a beautiful walking path around the estate that we enjoyed.

Lovely surroundings but unfortunately in a room in a high traffic area. Kept awake by revelers at night and woken by the early breakfast goers in the morning. Staff disinterested.

We didn’t stay in the end. Madingley notified us on the morning we were in a double twin room. We booked a superior double with king sized bed I tried e mailing, telephoning and even tried Expedia but not one person made contact until 3.03pm. We had by then booked other accommodation, we had no choice. A week later Madingley are being uncooperative over a refund Very very disappointing, they have apologised but kept my money Madingley are clearly not to be trusted when booking, if they do this to us then they are disrespectful of their customers

Lovely place to stay - the staff went above and beyond for us.

They cancelled the prepaid booking I made 3 months earlier and did not tell me how to get a refund. I still have not got it and they won’t reply to my messages. Inefficient and discourteous

Excellent place to stay. Staff 1st class very quiet and easy to reach City centre by bus or car.

Lovely setting and the breakfast was fantastic as usual. This was the second time we stayed at the Hall. We stayed for 2 nights this time. Unfortunately house keeping did not refresh the room during our stay and the coffee facilities were not restocked which we thought was unusual.

Staff are lovely and responsive. Breakfast is great, as is the price. I reported a slow-draining shower after the first day, which was promptly resolved but housekeeping forgot to come that day. Funny smell in the room (fusty).

The grounds were absolutely beautiful, but the accommodation itself was very basic. The room was very hot. Also lots of stairs so getting luggage up and down was difficult. The breakfast was absolutely beautiful and the staff were very attentive. Bar meal options at night were very limited and basic. Location to the Madingley/Cambridge park and ride was outstanding. If you just need a place to lay your head for the night, this will do the trick.

Wonderful, peaceful, relaxed. Grounds & walled garden, amazing. Great selection at breakfast. Well placed for getting around; M11-south 5 mins away. Cambridge Park & Ride 10 mins away. American Military Cemetery, Museum & Chapel 5 mins away. Large garden centre near there too. Village pub 5 minutes walk down the Hall's driveway & left into village. Single room: like a residence dormitory, basic but all with all you need; ensuite bathroom, towels & mini toiletries, tv, kettle, small fridge, safe, iron, hairdryer, fan/heater. Clean comfy bed & quiet environment, nothing fancy, but i don't visit places to sit in my room. I loved it here for the location & look foward to return.

Never stayed in such a lovely old building full of character. Park and ride 5 minutes by car £3.50 return into cambridge. Three horseshoes pub 5 minute walk away. 8 of us over 60 stayed and we all loved it. Thank you.

Great location, beautiful building, historic atmosphere. Loved the Hogwarts style breakfast arrangements having not sat at student hall long tables for years. Good service and easy parking. A pleasure.

Our recent stay at this location was good. The breakfast was excellent. Onsite staff were polite and helpful. The room was tidy. The building was beautiful inside and outside. The environment around the hall was beautiful. The drawbacks are : it requires your own vehicle to get access. The air smelled like some bull’s poop by the evening during our stay. I did not know what it could be. I had difficulty for my early checkout. I sent an email to the address as indicated on the information sheet. But I never got an reply.

Could not find the place Expedia voucher stated Madingley Hall, Madingley. The phone number on the voucher was for Expedia, not Madingley HGall, so could not contact them. Turns out they ar eparyt odf Cambridge ubinverity site, and it is very smaall letters under the University of Cambridge name plate by the main gates. This would not be so bad except the entrance is on a roundabout, so no time to read the small print navigating the roundabout, Mentionesd it to reception, who agreed with me then laughed it off..

The grounds are spectacular. The building is very beautiful. The rooms are very nice however the bathroom was adequate. The included buffet breakfast was a nice touch however the hot food was not even warm.

This is a unique property reminds me of Hogwarts!!! Beautiful gardens, lovely cafe (pizza enough for two) breakfast is brilliant lots of options available

It’s clearly student digs, beware it’s not a ‘hotel’. No mention of the bar serves till 8pm only and the menu is very limited! However! It’s a fabulous building and very quiet!

Poor breakfast 45 minutes before end of service some food had run out. Had to ask for coffee as that had also ran out. Room clean and tidy. No food available pm.

Madingley Hall is a delightful if somewhat twisty-corridored place to navigate. Everything was as you would expect except for the disappointing breakfast, which had a satisfactory range of Continental or full English options but the cooked breakfast was lukewarm at 9, a time when most of the conference delegates had already finished and left for their programmes.

I particularly felt the breakfast was first rate - even the fried eggs were uniquely without crusts! It was easy to get into Cambridge using the park-and-drive only a few minutes away.
