Parking is tight but doable

This hotel was a great find. It is located very near the wharf. The room was clean and cozy, and they offer a free log for the fireplace. On-site parking cost $20 and it was very nice being able to park right below our second story room. Checkin/ checkout was easy and the included breakfast was a nice touch. We will definitely be staying here the next time we visit Monterey.

Lovely room, friendly and welcoming hostess. Stayed one night. Walkable to the wharf and Golden State Theater. Vibrant neighborhood. Quiet. Only one negative. It was stated that there is plenty of street parking. Most parking on street is 1-2 hours Monday through Saturday until 6p. Hotel provided some limited parking for $20 per night. Will be coming back

Great location. Close to the Fisherman’s warf and many restaurants. All great for walking. The only downside was the parking at the hotel. Tight squeeze

I love the historical factor of the property. The grounds are beautifully maintained the room we stayed was very nice/well kept. Staff was very welcoming and helpful when we had questions. The location was great an eight minute walk or so to old fisherman‘s wharf and about a five minute drive to Cannery Row and the aquarium we were in town for a wedding that was being held at the Marriott hotel directly across the street so once we parked, we just walked everywhere we needed to go for the weekend. The parking is limited especially for large vehicles. We took our truck and parking was very tight and a little hairy. There was even a minor accident as one of the guest was backing out. They bumped into one of the employees cars. Water pressure in shower is not the best. No microwave in room. The free breakfast while good but was missing a those hot items you would have if you stayed at a chain hotel. Ie scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage patties. We called it first breakfast. All in all it was a very nice peaceful day and I will be booking with him again I’m driving my Kia instead. I’m out of a photo and highlighted and purple where we tucked the truck. There’s a pillar right there and it barely fit.

Great property! Enjoyed our stay and is in a great location staff was super nice. Very walkable. Was able to park at a pay to park a few blocks away for $10 a day. Highly recommend!

Great room that was HUGE! (Honeymoon Suite). Loved the antiques. Parking was very tight and limited is the only negative. Great convenient location to all the downtown restaurants and wharf.

Great little hotel in the heart of Monterey- our only issue was with the onsite parking, which was pretty small and difficult to navigate. Other than that, we’d highly recommend the property.

The hotel was quiet and comfortable. They also offered a complimentary log to enjoy in my room’s fireplace which made for a cozy evening. The hotel was only a few blocks from downtown Monterey and Fisherman’s Wharf. Parking was a bit tight but manageable. I would happily stay here again!

REALLY NICE PLACE CLOSE TO THE WHARF. SHAME THEY CHARGE 15 DOLLARS A NIGHT TO PARK

The room was great, clean and had beautiful wood vaulted ceilings. I loved the historic charm but it had nice upgraded features in the bathroom. The glass french doors opened to let fresh air in. Felt very safe and secluded almost.

Everyone we interacted with at the Merritt House Hotel was charming, helpful, and extremely professional. Rafaela and Tracy at the front desk were great! The location of the hotel is perfect, and the grounds are lovely. 5 stars for these categories. However, the rooms in the Historic Adobe where we stayed for 2 days smelled terrible. Very musty and moldy. We propped a fan in front of a window, left the front door open, bought a bottle of vinegar, and put cups of it all around the suite – everything we could think of to help mitigate the odor. After several hours, it got a little better but never went away. If you're going to charge over $400 per night for a hotel room, the room should not have this issue. For anyone considering staying in the Historic Adobe, I would advise confirming in advance that steps have been taken to fix this issue.

Did not like anything about this property. The room we stayed in had a broken toilet and leaked all over our belongings and we didn’t stay because our clothes were soiled by dirty toilet water. We checked in at 1pm went to Monterey bay aquarium all day returned around 5:30 used the toilet once and it had a major leak and we left at 7pm. Worst hotel I have ever stayed at.

Room was clean and tastefully appointed. Loved the view of the garden from the french doors.

The location and service were great, room was immaculate, and the lobby and courtyard were adorable. Lots of restaurants and even a Walgreens within walking distance plus you could walk to the harbor or even over to Cannery Row and the Aquarium if you had time (a little over a mile over to there). But the room didn’t have a window or air conditioning unit, so it was really hot at night and the only way to cool it off was by opening the door. And the bed was way too firm to the point where it affected my sleep despite being exhausted from all the walking and hiking :( The parking was extra $ and it was really difficult to get in and out of the spaces even in our little rental car. But the continental breakfast was good. Overall it was ok, but we probably won’t be staying here again due to the bed and lack of cooling, but this is perfect for your first time in Monterey if you want to be close to all the in-town action and maybe our room and bed was an exception to the rest.

The staff were pleasant and helpful. The location is great, near many restaurants and walkable. Our room was cute but the bathroom did have ants and the toilet got plugged up. Staff brought a plunger right away but plumbing seems older. Just a few little things that aren’t deal breakers. We did miss having a pool and spa to use, so we will likely stay at the Portola again in the future like we usually do.

Great property! Huge clean room, easy parking! Bed wasn’t extremely comfortable but otherwise a great place!

The hotel was nice with a good location. And cute rooms but they were poorly cleaned with past guests things still in the room. Then the alarm clock went off at 3 am and woke up the whole family even though we didn't touch it.

It would be perfect if we didn’t have to listen to an amorous couple ALL Night. The walls are tragically thin. Some sound maintenance is woefully needed.

The Room Climate Control was inoperable... it would have been nice to have the fireplace " Electric".. no instructions on how to use it , shower head and water pressure could have used an upgrade.. However, The staff was excellent, The Room Staff was 10 out of 10! ...Bed was very comfortable, the town / Hotel Location was great! Good WiFi.. Nice place to stay.

Room is stylish and comfortable. Location is great too. The downsides that the shower water is very small and breakfast is limited.

Was walking distance to Old Fisherman's Warf. Pretty spot. Breakfast was very basic. Felt like a cute B&B. Parking was expensive. BIGGEST complaint was the bed. It was an old spring mattress that had to be at least 20 years old. ROCK HARD mattress. KILLED my back. I brought up my concern to the front desk the first morning after, and the sweet girl offered for us to switch rooms. I checked out the bed in the other room HOPING it had a softer bed, but it didn't so we didn't switch. Had to go to Walgreens for ibuprofen and IcyHot to be able to endure the following 3 nights. If you have a bad back, these beds are NOT for you! They need to be replaced!

Our room was beautiful (King bed, 2nd floor)! We loved the high ceilings, 4 post bed, and fireplace. It was nice to have a balcony with a garden view. The location was great and walkable to everything. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Monterey now that we found the Merritt House!

Charming place! It's a historical adobe that has been converted to a hotel. The bathroom is new and modern. Because the building is old, the walls are thinner and you will hear your neighbors. If you are staying on the ground floor, you will hear creaking floors from above. The charm outweighs these inconveniences, though. Location is perfect - walking distance to Fisherman's Wharf.

Great location and rooms were well decorated. Noon checkout was good. Cons: no AC in the room. Very tight parking. No microwave in the room. Breakfast was mediocre, bagels, muffins, fruit or cereal. The worst part was the water from sinks and shower smelled like ocean water.

It was cute cozy place to stay with great convenience to many amenities around the town. Remodeled bathrooms were clean and pleasant. The rooms were pretty dark even though we turned on all the lights. Only thing was that the walls were thin so the next room conversations were easy to hear.

First time staying here and unfortunately was a frustrating experience. Start with the good - maids were friendly and effective in keeping the place clean. We checked in on a Wednesday and out on Saturday. Breakfast nook quaint and OK with basic options (bagels/toast, hard-boiled eggs, muffins/pastries, apples/oranges, yogurt, cheerios/Raisin Bran, coffee but nothing other than cold water for kids). Now for the frustrating - on day 1 we informed the front desk the tv was not working. They had no ideas but said they would get back to us. I proceeded to check in each morning/evening before/after our day’s activities. I was told repeatedly they would talk to a manager. Long story short, they NEVER fixed or even FOLLOWED UP with an update. There is no maintenance person onsite and the nice girls that work the front desk really had no idea how to help drive to a solution. I didn’t expect them to be able to provide tech support personally, but at least contact someone who could. Just very poor customer service. Two other things to note. 1- After checking in and seeing our room had no tub (just a walk-in shower) I asked if there was another room we could switch to that would be better for our small child. Answer: “None of our rooms have tubs.” 2 - The heater in our room was one of the older baseboard radiant heaters (not a problem by itself). Unfortunately it was located right behind a bed headboard (literally touching it) which felt unsafe and tough to sleep .

We had an issue with our hire car & the reception staff went above & beyond to help us - letting us use their phone repeatedly. They also came up to our room several times to let us know when we had a call. Huge thanks to Carla I think her name was

Location was very convenient, we parked our car when we checked in and didn’t use it again until we checked out! We walked and or took the free trolley to the wharf and cannery row. We brought our e-bikes and rode for miles and miles along the coast in either direction. The property was well maintained and the staff were all friendly and helpful!

It was quaint, staff was friendly, rooms were clean. My only complaint is there is no one at the front desk at night. I was given a log for the fireplace and told to use the matches in my room. There were no matches. Also some guests were super loud after midnight. There was no one to call for help.

One of the finest hotels that we have experienced in Monterey. Everything about this hotel is “Top Notch!” Thanks to the entire hotel staff for an outstanding experience. This was our 2nd time at this location. Looking forward to our next visit.

The property itself is very nice. It was clean, and the staff was friendly. The major issue was no access to a front desk or employee. The empty room next to use had an alarm that went off at 5:55AM, and there was no way to find someone to enter and turn it off. We ended up getting up and leaving to get away from the noise. I did call the number listed, and left a message, and never heard anything regarding it. We never get to sleep in, so it was tremendously disappointing to be awoken so early with no solution. I realize it is a fluke situation, but it ruined an expensive night away.

Great location, lots of dining options nearby. Across the street from the Monterey Convention Center.

Walking distance to Old Fisherman’s Wharf and Cannery Row. Walking Path/Beach Access. I would come back and stay here again.

Clean, comfortable, cute, quiet place. We didn’t drive at all while here as it was close to everything we wanted to do. We will stay here again!

Great location downtown, very clean, nice breakfast, easy parking. No amenities like a gym, but much more reasonable price than elsewhere in the area. Would recommend!

Monterey Historic feeling, great central location

Wonderful front desk person with all kinds of suggestions. Loved our stay there. Thought we would probably go out for breakfast due to my gluten free requirement but found it wasn’t necessary. Breakfast, although continental, had plenty of choices (including yogurt and oatmeal.)

Everything was good. Only breakfast was a little chaotic due to the hi occupancy. All the rest grate!

Great option for a stay in Monterey! The room is charming and we loved the details of the French door, fireplace and skylight. Comfortable and clean with great service from the staff. Breakfast was such a great perk and the staff kept it stocked and ready. Walking distance to the wharf and the downtown area for food and drinks. Could walk to the cannery but chose to drive. Would definitely stay here again!

Breakfast at 8, quite late…. and there is letting you in at 7:50 even though they are there

Breakfast was very basic. Limited capacity for seating. Very limited selection. We arrived for breakfast one morning and there was barely anything left, nothing was replaced. The staff at breakfast were not particularly welcoming. Rooms although spotlessly clean, were very dark and the hairdryer was useless!

It was conveniently located close to downtown. Breakfast is simple, pasties, bagels and coffee. Parking not included.

I loved everything about this hotel, especially the private parking space (which could be included in the price), the landscaped inner courtyard and its historic background. May I suggest more GF options for breakfast? Even if not on display, some frozen GF bread available on demand would have been a great asset to complement the generous options of condiments.

Very good value stay. Room was comfortable, tasteful and clean. Breakfast was limited, but decent, especially as it is included in the stay. Only thing missing was a safe.
