A lovely place to stay, which makes us want to return for a longer stay. Highly eco-conscious and eco-friendly the property is very well maintained and offers a sumptuous sit-down breakfast and good lunch, and dinner options at the restaurant. With wonderful views of the mountains and airy rooms, the Trapp lodge offered a unique experience. Since there are no elevators, one has to be prepared to go up the ramp for rooms in the higher elevations. Staff are friendly and since dinner is done by reservation, we were pleasantly surprised to receive a call asking if we would like a dinner reservation to be made. Highly recommend this place for a lovely, comfortable and quiet stay.

The breakfasts were delicious! The food in the restaurant was also very good.The staff at the front desk were extremely helpful and made great suggestions for activities and local restaurants. Beautiful views from our hotel room!

Trapp lodge is very close to cloud forest and is really good. Rooms are not well maintained as carpet smell was strong ( no fan/ventilation) and we had good numbers of bugs coming to room too. Breakfast is limited with preset option servings. Rooms doesn't have coffee machine too.

The grounds were lovely. The staff was helpful. The food at their on-site restaurant was good. The service was great and the proximity to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve really made this a great place to stay.

This was a great property with easy access to the Curi-Cancha and the Monteverde Biological Reserve. We had dinner in the restaurant both nights and all 3 of us LOVED our meals both nights. The rooms are comfortable, large, good bedding, showers with shampoo, conditioner and body wash plus hairdryer. The breakfast is included and was very good, with fresh orange juice, or other juices. We both had the Breakfast Tipico which I love, but they had pancakes, French toast. I highly recommend the Desayuno Tipico which has gallo pinto, scrambled eggs, cheese, grilled tomatoes and sautéed plantains (bananas). Very good. The location is perfect if you’re birding. The staff is very friendly with a fabulous happy hour 4-6:00 with 2xwines for $7, 2xbeers for $7, liquor 2x for $8. It is a very friendly place to stay with friendly staff who are very accommodating. We highly recommend it.

Hotel antigo precisando de reforma, cortina de gosto duvidoso e empoeirada. Não tem frigobar no quarto, tampouco elevador. Funcionário ajuda com as malas. Mas é cansativo subir e descer para o quarto. Café da manhã mediano: vc escolha uma das opções. Quarto espaçoso e vista linda. Hotel tem potencial, está num lugar lindo. Excelente localização. Mas precisa de uma reforma para modernizar e há espaço para construir uma piscina aquecida que sentimos falta.

Excellent service at bar and restaurant. Spectacular food throughout the day. The grounds are beautiful. The reception staff was helpful with arranging activities. Clean room but coffee maker did not really work well -- weak coffee.

Hotel is right next to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It's quiet and peaceful. Hotel seems a bit dated and could use more electrical/charging outlets. Beautiful grounds and nice view of cloud forest. Room didn't appear to have heat or AC. But we used the restaurant the two nights we were there and the food was very good and reasonably priced. Glad because with dark and not great roads in Monteverde we decided to eat in. Staff was very attentive and helpful. If mobility problems make sure you get a room in the main building as it's a bit of a hike up hill to rooms higher up on the property.

Fabulous staff, very kind and helpful. The breakfasts were great and we had a wonderful dinner at the on-site restaurant. It's a 10 - 15 minute walk into the Monteverde Cloud Forest. It wasn't a problem for us, but there are some steep ramps getting to some of the rooms and from the road to the parking lot. If you have mobility issues, be sure to check with the staff about options.

This property was FULL of bugs!! I understand we were in a mountain location, but there were massive spider webs in all the window openings, flies and roaches EVERYWHERE, spiders on the bed (multiple times), the floors in our room look as if they hadn't been vacuumed in months. There is no privacy as in we could hear our neighbors conversations. There is no A/C or heating at all. Views are beautiful and the breakfast area was nice and clean, but the rooms themselves could use an overhaul and updating for sure!

Horrible experience. Rooms were old/outdated and ours was full of bugs. Staff was beyond rude and creepy - actively monitored our children. This hotel is NOT kid friendly despite the name of the hotel. Families should not stay here! Far from anything to do, moldy rooms, incredibly rude/invasive hotel staff. Only windows in the rooms face the walkway so you have zero privacy.

Personnel à l’accueil très hautain, me montre la chambre 3 insectes sont morts sur le tapis sans compter que ce dernier a des cochonneries blancs par terre. Je demande à changer de chambre même problème dans la deuxième, puis la troisième on voit des coquerelles vivantes qui se promènent en plus de cheveux sur le sol de la toilette. Je demande un remboursement car je n’ai pas envie de dormir avec les insectes! Esteban le préposé de l’accueil me répond que c’est très normal les insectes dans les chambres d’hôtel. Je lui répond qu’à 225$ la nuit je ne m’attends pas à dormir avec les insectes et que si j’avais voulu j’aurais été faire du camping et non payé un hôtel. Je lui demande un remboursement et il me dit que ce n’est pas possible car c’est très normal les insectes et que je suis entrain d’hallucinée des insectes. Expédia est fermé alors je me résous de dormir là. La chambre sent l’humidité il n’y a aucun chauffage ni air climatisé. le tapis de la chambre est sale, le lit est zéro confortable! Je me lève durant la nuit et voit 4 coquerelles dans la salle de bain! Heureusement je prends un vidéo pour le montrer à la réception! Un désastre comme hôtel: infestée de coquerelles!

Great lodge near the Monte Verde Reserve. This is one of the lodges highest up the road, about 1 km below the reserve. Great views across the valley. Very nice lodge. Room was in great condition, beds are comfortable, everything was clean. Breakfast is very nice. Staff is very helpful.

The location of the property is great, within walking distance of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. But the room we were assigned had a strong chemical smell in the bathroom, almost like a pesticide. The room feels old. The TV didn't work well. The shower soap dispenser didn't work. The shower pressure was too weak - the front desk said it was by design to preserve water.

The Orbitz photos don't do Trapp Family Hotel justice, this hotel is a true gem. The hotel is beautiful, the cleanliness is immaculate, the woody aroma of the rooms relaxes you the moment the door opens. The toiletries are organic and their perfumes are delicate, Breakfast is tasty, and the people who serve are very professional and extremely kind, the restaurant offers an exquisite variety of options, truly homemade. The hotel environment offers peace and is the ideal place to rest. All staff are extremely polite, and welcoming, helping all guests at all times. Esteban and Daisy advised us, even before arriving, through WhatsApp and they were truly incredible. Highly recommended!

I had a great experience. Everyone I interacted with was very friendly and helpful. I walked almost everywhere, from the cloud forest to a coffee farm (Café La Bella Tica, highly recommended), to the downtown Santa Elena area. I like walking, so the location was fine for me (I averaged about 10.5 miles per day). They have one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. It starts with fresh fruit (banana, pineapple and guava), and then you have a choice of 4 options: a traditional Costa Rican breakfast, pancakes, toast and eggs, or huevos rancheros. I didn't have the toast, but everything else was exceptional. The restaurant was also very good. I highly recommend the grilled chicken with black pepper sauce or the grilled sea bass. The facilities are well-maintained and clean. While I was there, they were repainting the walls along the walkway and they tended to the grounds (bush and tree trimming, mowing, etc). They cleaned my room when I asked them to and avoided it when I asked them not to. I could not have had a better experience. I highly recommend the Trapp Family Lodge.

We found the room to be cold with uncomfortable furniture. We also had a long, steep hike to our room every time (we were the furthest from reception). It was just not the relaxing, comfortable respite we had hoped for.
We found the room to be cold with uncomfortable furniture. We also had a long, steep hike to our room every time (we were the furthest from reception). It was just not the relaxing, comfortable respite we had hoped for.

I really wanted to give this property 5 stars but I had to take one off simply because the rooms, at least our room, was very outdated and the bed extremely uncomfortable. I will say that the views from this property are breathtaking and we were in love! It is a short walk to the Monteverde Cloud Forest. The staff were extremely friendly and courteous. The food at the restaurant was also quite good! My only disappointment was the room condition and bed. Otherwise, wonderful property!

Great lodge near the Monte Verde Reserve. This is one of the lodges highest up the road, about 1 km below the reserve. Great views across the valley. Very nice lodge. Room was in great condition, beds are comfortable, everything was clean. Breakfast is very nice. Staff is very helpful.

Parking lot was challenging but it worked. Pretty far outside of Santa Elena if you're looking for more of a walkable experience, but they provide onsite dining options (breakfast looked good though couldn't accommodate a food allergy). Beautiful location, near Cloud Forest. Room had windows without screens (bug entry) as the only source of air. Thankfully the weather was cool, but room was stuffy without air circulation.

Excelente ubicación a poca distancia de las reservas y restaurantes pero alejadito para más tranquilidad. Es un poco bullicioso. Se oyen los cuartos vecinos. Pero la relación calidad precio es justa. El restaurante es de calidad variable. Un día bien otro no, con porciones pequeñas en platos caros. El desayuno está bien, ordinario, básico.

We were very disappointed in our accommodations because our room was very cold. The lodge is an older building and the windows leak so cold air blew in our room all night. We talked to management and they offered us a heater. For the price we paid we should be comfortable in our room. We were staying for two nights but after freezing the first night we wanted a refund for the second and we were told no.The owner/manager we spoke with did not care about our concerns! The breakfast is super cheap. The servings are very small and limited. They need to treat customers fairly.

Mas é cansativo subir e descer para o quarto. Café da manhã mediano: vc escolha uma das opções. Quarto espaçoso e vista linda. Hotel tem potencial, está num lugar lindo. Excelente localização. Mas precisa de uma reforma para modernizar e há espaço para construir uma piscina aquecida que sentimos falta.

Hotel is right next to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. It's quiet and peaceful. Hotel seems a bit dated and could use more electrical/charging outlets. Beautiful grounds and nice view of cloud forest. Room didn't appear to have heat or AC. But we used the restaurant the two nights we were there and the food was very good and reasonably priced. Glad because with dark and not great roads in Monteverde we decided to eat in. Staff was very attentive and helpful. If mobility problems make sure you get a room in the main building as it's a bit of a hike up hill to rooms higher up on the property.

Great hotel for a great price. One of the few hotels I’ve stayed in where the pictures do not do it justice, the view from our mountain suite was amazing. The room was clean, spacious, and secure. The room doesn’t have A/C which threw us off at first but this is typical for the area as the cool mountain wind was more than enough for a comfortable stay with the windows cracked. The area around the hotel is surrounded by forest so it was extremely quiet and relaxing, calm enough even to see some wildlife roaming freely through the property. The overall decor of the room and common areas was extremely beautiful. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, specifically the gentleman at the front desk and the gentleman that kept the bar in the evening and served us breakfast in the morning. I can’t recommend this place enough. We wished we had time to stay here longer but we will definitely be back!

Excellent staff, especially Estefan at the front desk. Very friendly and very helpful. Great location near the Cloud Forest Monteverde. Only a 10 min walk. Room showed its age a bit, but was very comfortable and had a great view.

A lovely place to stay, which makes us want to return for a longer stay. Highly eco-conscious and eco-friendly the property is very well maintained and offers a sumptuous sit-down breakfast and good lunch, and dinner options at the restaurant. With wonderful views of the mountains and airy rooms, the Trapp lodge offered a unique experience. Since there are no elevators, one has to be prepared to go up the ramp for rooms in the higher elevations. Staff are friendly and since dinner is done by reservation, we were pleasantly surprised to receive a call asking if we would like a dinner reservation to be made. Highly recommend this place for a lovely, comfortable and quiet stay.

Excellent stay at this hotel. All staff were extremely friendly and kind. The front desk staff were super helpful when for all requests, especially when booking tours. The view and the hotel grounds are absolutely beautiful! The restaurant for lunch/dinner and breakfast were very good and affordable. I would recommend this hotel for a stay in Monteverde and would be happy to return back to this hotel!

Horrible experience. Rooms were old/outdated and ours was full of bugs. Staff was beyond rude and creepy - actively monitored our children. This hotel is NOT kid friendly despite the name of the hotel. Families should not stay here! Far from anything to do, moldy rooms, incredibly rude/invasive hotel staff. Only windows in the rooms face the walkway so you have zero privacy.

We had a lovely stay. Very helpful staff. The reception team helped book a last minute guided walk in Monteverder NP. Bar staff were very friendly, even gave us some traditional Costa Rican cooking tips! Big room with a lovely view, when the weather allowed. Breakfast is definitely skewed in favour of those who like eggs! But very nice with fresh fruit and tea/coffee/juice.

This was our second stay at Trapp Family Hotel in Monteverde and we loved it even more than the first visit. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food and drink was excellent. And the activities set up by the hotel on our behalf were nothing less than spectacular. We recommend horseback riding and canyoning!

Very nice place to stay. I chose this place because I thought it was near the cloud reserve for ziplining. It is the closest hotel to Monteverde Cloud Reserve but not the ziplining. It was a 25 min drive for us. Having said that we enjoyed our stay. It is old but the restaurant food is fine and breakfast good. The grounds are well kept. Thanks to Estefan for helping us book our ziplining and hanging bridges.

It is a longer walk to the town, but you have convenience of free breakfast and dinner dining on the property. I loved that it was the closet to the Cloud Forest - we walked to the ticket window! Wonderful garden views from our room. Very peaceful. Staff was very helpful in booking tours for us.

We arrived here from La Fortuna to see cloud forests. We drove, and the last 50 km of driving was probably the worst public road I have seen in my life, and I have seen some. It's a gravel road, consisting mainly of potholes. The hotel itself was OK, though reachable only by a dusty gravel road, so there is no leaving anywhere without getting a layer of dust on your car. The cloud forests are nice, although I would try to condense the whole Monteverde experience to just one day (we stayed two).

We had a very comfortable mountain view room. As expected we had a fantastic view over the cloud forest which we could enjoy from the room with a really large window and comfy chairs. The breakfast was full service and excellent with enough items on the menu to have a different selection every day. We had dinner once and it was also very good at a reasonable price. The hotel is away from the centre of Santa Elena, and the Monteverde cloud forest is 10-15' walk away. It does feel isolated, and it adds to the charm of the place. We organised our excursions beforehand, including transportation. It was easy to get a taxi from town for $14 or so. Excellent stay! We thought a small fridge would be useful.

The Trapp Family Hotel provided us with a wonderful base to explore Monteverde and the surrounding Cloud Forest. The view from our Mountain Room was superb and was a joy to wake up to each of the five days of our stay The rooms were comfortable and well appointed, if a little dated, but this added to the overall charm. The food for breakfast and dinner was great, with plenty of choice, and they were able to cater for a vegan diet, which was very much appreciated. The staff were amazing. Friendly and attentive. The Trapp Family Hotel is located close to the Monteverde Cloud Forest and easily reached on foot. However, everywhere else in Monteverde is really only accessed by car, it is a long way to walk on a gravel road and we didn’t try to walk into town. All in all we would highly recommend the Trapp Family Hotel to anyone looking for a beautiful location to stay with friendly staff. We wouldn’t hesitate to return if we visit Monteverde in the future.

Our six night-stay was delightful. The lodge is superb. Access to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a 10-minute walk away. Our room was delightful with a grand view of valleys and mountains and tropical plants on the property. We ate breakfast and dinner at the lodge restuarant. Breakfast was outstanding, and the dinner menu was extensive. Every dinner was delicious and expertly prepared.
Our six night-stay was delightful. The lodge is superb. Access to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a 10-minute walk away. Our room was delightful with a grand view of valleys and mountains and tropical plants on the property. We ate breakfast and dinner at the lodge restuarant. Great view from our room. Quiet. Restaurant was good food but a bit pricey compared to other options in area. Breakfast was nice and included. Very close to Monteverde reserve entrance so some traffic on road and took a while to get up there from town. We ended up eating in town a lot.

This was a great property with easy access to the Curi-Cancha and the Monteverde Biological Reserve. We had dinner in the restaurant both nights and all 3 of us LOVED our meals both nights. The rooms are comfortable, large, good bedding, showers with shampoo, conditioner and body wash plus hairdryer. The breakfast is included and was very good, with fresh orange juice, or other juices. We both had the Breakfast Tipico which I love, but they had pancakes, French toast. I highly recommend the Desayuno Tipico which has gallo pinto, scrambled eggs, cheese, grilled tomatoes and sautéed plantains (bananas). Very good. The location is perfect if you’re birding. The staff is very friendly with a fabulous happy hour 4-6:00 with 2xwines for $7, 2xbeers for $7, liquor 2x for $8. It is a very friendly place to stay with friendly staff who are very accommodating. We highly recommend it.

We both had the Breakfast Tipico which I love, but they had pancakes, French toast. I highly recommend the Desayuno Tipico which has gallo pinto, scrambled eggs, cheese, grilled tomatoes and sautéed plantains (bananas). Very good. The location is perfect if you’re birding. The staff is very friendly with a fabulous happy hour 4-6:00 with 2xwines for $7, 2xbeers for $7, liquor 2x for $8. It is a very friendly place to stay with friendly staff who are very accommodating. We highly recommend it.

Excellent service at bar and restaurant. Spectacular food throughout the day. The grounds are beautiful. The reception staff was helpful with arranging activities. Clean room but coffee maker did not really work well -- weak coffee.

Our six night-stay was delightful. The lodge is superb. Access to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is a 10-minute walk away. Our room was delightful with a grand view of valleys and mountains and tropical plants on the property. We ate breakfast and dinner at the lodge restuarant. Breakfast was outstanding, and the dinner menu was extensive. Every dinner was delicious and expertly prepared.

Great view from our room. Quiet. Restaurant was good food but a bit pricey compared to other options in area. Breakfast was nice and included. Very close to Monteverde reserve entrance so some traffic on road and took a while to get up there from town. We ended up eating in town a lot.

I had a great experience. Everyone I interacted with was very friendly and helpful. I walked almost everywhere, from the cloud forest to a coffee farm (Café La Bella Tica, highly recommended), to the downtown Santa Elena area. I like walking, so the location was fine for me (I averaged about 10.5 miles per day). They have one of the best breakfasts I've ever had. It starts with fresh fruit (banana, pineapple and guava), and then you have a choice of 4 options: a traditional Costa Rican breakfast, pancakes, toast and eggs, or huevos rancheros. I didn't have the toast, but everything else was exceptional. The restaurant was also very good. I highly recommend the grilled chicken with black pepper sauce or the grilled sea bass. The facilities are well-maintained and clean. While I was there, they were repainting the walls along the walkway and they tended to the grounds (bush and tree trimming, mowing, etc). They cleaned my room when I asked them to and avoided it when I asked them not to. I could not have had a better experience. I highly recommend the Trapp Family Lodge.

06/2026: We were excited for our stay, but our experience was the worst of Costa Rica. On our first night, after a long day of travel, the toilet in Room 28 flooded after a single flush at 9:43 PM. No toilet paper had been used, so this was clearly not caused by misuse. We immediately attempted to contact the front desk, only to discover it had closed at 9:30 PM. Despite this being an emergency sanitation issue, no assistance was available. As a result, we spent the next 10 hours sleeping in a room with carpet soaked in toilet water. The odor was overwhelming, air circulation was poor, and the bathroom was completely unusable. The next morning, staff directed us to use the bathroom in another room, which we appreciated, but we had still paid for a room that could not be used as intended. The front desk employee informed us that we would receive a refund because the room was uninhabitable. We were also told that if we chose not to stay the second night, both nights would be refunded. Relying on that promise, we checked out and left. Management later denied the refund, arguing that because we briefly used the bathroom in the other room, we were not entitled to reimbursement for both nights. This makes little sense, as we only used that bathroom because our own room was unusable due to a maintenance failure beyond our control. Between the unsanitary conditions, lack of emergency support, and failure to honor the promise, this was one of the most frustrating hotel.

Good for staying and looking out the windows. Hotel wasn't bad, but no mini fridge in room. Walk for ice. Breakfast was OK, but few options. Close to the cloud forest, but we left early and left the area. Not for us, the town was a slow place to walk and window shop, we wanted adventure.

The staff was very helpful, we arrived a day earlier and that was not a problem! breakfast was good, also dinner. The bathroom didn’t have security bars and the floor was slippery. Missing hooks to hang shower cap, etc.

The room was nice. The window in the bathroom had the screen knocked out. Our room was a ways from the front. The website said hiking etc but everything was extra.
