The hotel really is like all the “pensions” I have stayed in travelling in Europe but cooler. It was not fancy but we knew that when booking it. The room was clean as were the shared bathroom facilities and although it was fully booked when we were there we didn’t have to wait to shower. Tammy is so lovely and welcoming - she gave us lots of recommendations about places on the neighborhood to eat and stores and streets to check out. We didn’t end up eating downstairs as we were out and about all day and evening but it looked great. Such a nice vibe, lots of art on the walls and a little common area. The location is amazing, we walked everywhere although there was public transit too. Will definitely stay there on our next trip to Montreal.

The door codes were difficult to figure out. The stairs were treacherous. There were a lot of people hanging around outside the entrance (right above a café) There were only 3 hangers in the room and no hooks on the wall or door. Only one power outlet. The room was tiny. Freshly painted. Decent bed. There was a split system air conditioner in the room. All that said, if I were coming again, I would stay here. Great value for money in a good neighbhood. Popolo, it's a great start, but you just need to make some cheap tweaks (hooks, towel rack, power bar, for instance)

Room was clean and well appointed for the price -- although no glasses or cups. Management was immediately responsive and friendly when I had a question. There are two long flights of stairs to negotiate with barely adequate railings.

Overall we had a good experience. We loved all the quirky artwork everywhere. :) The beds were comfy, we liked the ease of having door codes and no keys to keep track of, and the shared sitting room (once someone pointed it out to us) was super cute and a nice place to write and eat meals in. It was weird, though, not having someone to check in/out with or ask questions face to face with. For example, we didn’t know there were two more bathrooms down the hall that were better furnished until one of our fellow visitors pointed it them out, we never did figure out where the courtyard or patio were, so we couldn’t use them, and we didn’t know that some people just left their food out in the shared tea area until we almost ate someone else’s breakfast rolls (thinking they were part of the hotel treats along with the tea service). Those are the kinds of things I’d ask a person at the desk about without a thought, but wouldn’t ask an email correspondent who isn’t likely to get back to me right away. It would be helpful if there were a little map or guide to the tiny hotel with that info in it in the room when you come in.

Friendly people in the restaurant and pension owner was very helpful by phone ( found/gave me parking!!). There’s no one on the premises to make inquiries to though. Love the art and feel of the place. Very clean and best showers anywhere! The bar and restaurant people were so lovely, I want to take them home with me.

So cute and well made up! Classy. The owners are very friendly and communicative. Check in and out is so easy! They gave us a bottle of wine! And we got 25% off at their restaurant!!! The food was amazing!! It's close to bakeries, a grocery store, and the clubs!! We will be back here soon! Loved it!!

The bathroom was disgusting, unclean with hairs all over the floor. I literally sat down on the bed and then got up and left and went somewhere else. I have no words. No reception, no bottle of promised wine, I feel really bad leaving a negative review but there was so many excellent reviews I thought maybe this people be helpful for someone to know just what they were getting into. So sorry!!

The property was described. Only issue we had was there was no water to drink. Washrooms were shared but they were clean. They stay was wonderful no doubt.

We loved Pensionne Popolo and will be back! It was very convenient to restaurants, all kinds of shopping, music events, and close to the Metro. The room and shared bathrooms were clean and the other guests were quiet and respectful.

The air conditioning was a huge plus! Very cute and unique place to stay. Perfect location, lots of walkable tourist spots as well as basics like pharmacy and convenience store. Staff were great communicators and accommodating. Will definitely stay here again, loved it!

Cool vibe and location, and the staff is helpful and nice, but the doors to the rooms are not secure. We had other guests able to enter our locked room in the middle of the night (presumably by mistake) because there's obviously one key code shared between all rooms. Very strange. Why bother to have locks on the individual rooms?

Great location in a cool neighbourhood for a great price! Our host, Tammy, was super friendly and responsive. The room, plus shared bathrooms and common areas are clean and have that old Montreal vibe. Remember that you are staying at a well known music venue so the streets are lively and there is some noise bleed. That said, the rooms are soundproofed and we had no problems sleeping - bring earplugs if you are worried! Thanks for a great stay!

Such a cute, fun place to stay while exploring Montreal. The air conditioning was top notch on some very hot days, and although we heard the music downstairs, it was always stopped by 11 and we didn't think it was that loud. The owner was super friendly and lovely.

Good for a quick stay and for the price. It’s loud at night as others have said but i was able to sleep fine with ear plugs. It’s a cool quirky place for a quick stay. No eating allowed in the room. Mirror in the room would be great.

I stayed at Pensione Popolo for multiple weeks on a work trip and Tammy the manager was super accommodating, available for questions and making sure the stay is going smoothly and comfortably. Amazing location right in the iconic Mile End, close to metros, bus lines and walking distance to different neighbourhoods, parks and food. Crisp A/C, fast wifi and multiple shared showers/bathrooms. Even with the communal aspect there is a lot of privacy and all of the other guests I met seemed happy and polite! The negative reviews are confusing to me as if you read the booking it clearly states what amenities are present in the space. Yes you are on one of the main arteries of Montreal - sounds of city come with it! There is a shared fridge and kettle. Even with my long term stay I made it work just fine. Truly an affordable, well located place to stay after exploring Montreal all day! I would definitely book in here again.

Tammy, the hotel manager was a great face to the Pensione Popolo. She upgraded our room, gave us a quick tour, and answered a few questions. The location of the hotel and price are our favorite features.

Friendly people in the restaurant and pension owner was very helpful by phone ( found/gave me parking!!). There’s no one on the premises to make inquiries to though. Love the art and feel of the place. Very clean and best showers anywhere! The bar and restaurant people were so lovely, I want to take them home with me.

We loved Pensionne Popolo and will be back! It was very convenient to restaurants, all kinds of shopping, music events, and close to the Metro. The room and shared bathrooms were clean and the other guests were quiet and respectful.

10/10 niche accommodation in a very desirable area of Montreal! Reminds me of a place I stayed at once in Vancouver. Cozy, safe, excellent decor, clean, comfy, fantastic host. If you’re looking for a comfortable stay for an unbeatable price this place is for you!

Perfect part of town, Everything is right around, Got all the info/ code ahead of time. This place as a great vibe not like another chain hotel. We need more hotel like Pensione Popolo. + the owner is super friendly.

In the heart of Montreal's artist community this is a very friendly, welcoming spot to immerse yourself into the city's music and cultural scene. Don't go looking for a sauna or lounging in your room watching t.v all day, there is none of that. Clean, comfy, modest accommodations in a great location with good food and drinks downstairs and nearby. Live music downstairs certain evenings.

So cute and well made up! Classy. The owners are very friendly and communicative. Check in and out is so easy! They gave us a bottle of wine! And we got 25% off at their restaurant!!! The food was amazing!! It's close to bakeries, a grocery store, and the clubs!! We will be back here soon! Loved it!!

Très facile d'accès. Nous y sommes restés 4 nuits, simple et efficace, nous avions notre propre salle de bain. Nous n'avons pas été dérangé par le bar qui se trouve juste en dessous, ce qui était notre crainte. Très bien situé, à 5 bonnes minutes du métro et idéalement situé à Mont Royal.

Couldn’t see the messages from the hotel on hotel.com for the codes to get in. Also there is no staff on site to help. Bartender at the bar next door helped us to get ahold of management to get information. The room was absolutely disgusting with cobwebs everywhere and pubic hair on the bathroom floor. The carpet is so old that it smells like wet dirty socks in the room. The toilet is situated in an awkward spot where the shower is and you have to sit on it on an angle. The bar downstairs hosts heavy metal bands and is very noisy, much so they leave ear plugs in the room lol Overall a horrible experience and would not recommend it unless you live like a slob in everyday life. Would not stay there again.

The room was sweet and very clean, the private bath room was small and very clean, tiny sink but perfectly fine, nice bathtub with shower. No extras but we weren’t looking for any. The first night was lovely and quiet. The second night (a Wednesday) there was a band somewhere below that was thunderously loud. Relentless. One chord over and over, every now and then they’d remember there was another chord in the universe they knew how to play but by then it didn’t help…. My daughter dealt with it well; she had headphones of her own and a show to watch on her computer. I had only the earplugs the hotel had provided, which were no match for the sound. But, the good thing is that the band stopped playing! Hurray! Around midnight I think. So. We loved the neighborhood and were happy to be there. We recommend this simple and pretty pensione, but bring your own headphones, just in case.
