Our first stay in a ryokan. Obviously when one is used to staying in "western style" hotels, a place like this will be different. But my family and I were up for it. It was fun! Pros: - a warm welcome *by name* as we exited the taxi upon arrival - innkeeper and all staff very friendly and accommodating - we had no issue communicating our needs in English - fresh kimonos provided each day we were there - inn is located in a beautiful, surprisingly remote location - meals were very traditionally Japanese - "western" bathtub and shower available in our room in case one isn't comfortable using the public bath house - innkeeper provided us with complimentary umbrellas to use all day as it was rainy--so nice! - innkeeper also provided us with complimentary shuttle transportation to the nearest JR Rail station, where we easily connected to other trains. They also dropped other guests off at nearby temples - Wi-Fi was fast and free Cons: - hallway smelled faintly of smoke, as smoking appears to be allowed in some (all?) rooms. Our room itself did not smell of smoke - interior is more traditional (some would call the decor "dated"), which may be an issue with people - if one does not eat breakfast or dinner at the inn, there are only a few other restaurants within walking distance, and none of them were open during our time there (late March)

The whole stay was a uniqe experience of Japan. The hotel in not brand new but the personel made this journey unforgettable. Exiting sleeping and sitting on the floor in our room. The dinner and breakfast felt like presents. Especially the breakfast looked so beautiful, a new years breakfast. I am sorry we didn't have time for a walk to the shrines. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere but they have a shuttlebus and are very helpful to fetch you up and drive you to a station in the morning.

Absolutely stunning ryokon in a tiny little mountain town just outside kyoto. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating to our needs, even preparing breakfast and transport to the station an hour early so we could catch our next train to tokyo. The ryokon itself was absolutely gorgeous, nestled away in the trees next to a mountain stream, it is a breathtaking picturesque view like something out of a ghibli film. The rooms were quite spacious and very traditional japanese style and the baths were very soothing and comfortable. All in all i highly recommended this place to anyone who is looking for a more quiet and traditional type of stay.

The property itself is a destination, featuring a gorgeous walking trail that leads along the river and a small path up to a lovely shrine—perfect for a morning hike. Visiting in October meant very few other tourists, making it feel like we had this pocket of nature all to ourselves. The staff are the heart of this place. They are not just excellent; they are caring and incredibly attentive. Their dedication to an excellent guest experience is evident in every detail. They even generously provided a complementary pickup from a local bus stop when we arrived and offer a convenient shuttle service to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and the train station for ongoing travel. Speaking of special touches, the complementary breakfast is a highlight—a beautifully presented and delicious cultural experience you won't forget. The hotel is full of character but a bit tired. The facilities are quite basic. The menu choices are somewhat limited. The staff are very friendly and helpful, but with limited English (nothing that Google Translate could not fix). All of these shortcomings are largely compensated by magnificent location and incredible views.

1. 교통이 매우 불편합니다. 교토시내에서 너무 떨어져있고 픽업서비스 제공을 해주긴 하는데, 그래도 불편합니다. 2. 시설이 너무 낡았고 청결하지 않습니다. 욕장의 탕 바닥에 모래같은 것들이 이틀내내 그대로 있었습니다. 3. 날씨는 겨울 치고는 춥지 않은 편이었는데도 실내가 너무 추워서 잠자기 어려웠습니다. 4. 아침식사는 정갈하고 맛있었습니다.

We loved this hotel so much. The people running the hotel are all so kind and personable. There is a slight language barrier but it was not a problem at all. The room was a great size and very comfortable. The breakfast was great and offered to every guest. You can also purchase a dinner. If you want an authentic traditional style hotel this is the place! We loved the men and women’s onsen. The hotel is set in a gully out of the city next to a river. You can take a bus to the main city or the hotel also offers a shuttle to the train station or other specific locations. If we return to Japan we would definitely make this one of our stops again!

We spent 1 night at this traditional Japanese inn. Our room was great and it was a wonderful experience to stay somewhere with tatami mats and sleep on futons. The riverside hotel is located in the most stunning, quiet, and peaceful forest. We enjoyed exploring the quiet beauty of it. We chose the half board rate which gave us supper and breakfast. The traditional food was delicious and very filling and eating riverside while it was raining was a highlight of our family trip to Japan. We did not use the onset as it was just too hot outside and have a warm bath did not seem refreshing to us. The shuttle to the train station made things very convenient. The property is old, and can use an update, but it was the location that was important to us. We had a wonderful time.

An amazing and unique traditional stay in a small town outside of Kyoto. It is secluded and we were still able travel to Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, and Kobe. Public transportation is provided multiple time every morning, and although I did a lot I highly recommend walking around the trails, and temples. My favorite temple was right behind the hotel, and it held amazing views and was not crowded at all. This was by far one of the coolest experiences i’ve had, and if you are looking for a traditional stay this place is it. They cater to whatever need you might have, and everyone is so nice. It is hard to put into words how much I enjoyed this experience!

従業員の皆さんがとても温かく応対してくださいました。 ちょっと築年数が重ねているせいか、少し整理整頓が必要かなとおもいました。でもとても快適に過ごせました。ありがとうございました😊

We spent 1 night at this traditional Japanese inn. Our room was great and it was a wonderful experience to stay somewhere with tatami mats and sleep on futons. The riverside hotel is located in the most stunning, quiet, and peaceful forest. We enjoyed exploring the quiet beauty of it. We chose the half board rate which gave us supper and breakfast. The traditional food was delicious and very filling and eating riverside while it was raining was a highlight of our family trip to Japan. We did not use the onset as it was just too hot outside and have a warm bath did not seem refreshing to us. The shuttle to the train station made things very convenient. The property is old, and can use an update, but it was the location that was important to us. We had a wonderful time.

Experiencia increíble, hay otros ryokans por la zona y en Kioto pero este mantiene esencia tradicional sumado a la ubicación que está es increíble. Para llegar al hotel cogimos el bus JR3 desde la estación de Kioto, y nos recogieron el personal del hotel en la parada de Takao, muy amables llevándonos y ayudándonos a ajustar el itinerario de los días en Kioto. Para salir del hotel te acercan a paradas cercanas que les digas, muy amables por su parte, y de ahí podías coger tren o bus, y para volver nosotros cogíamos taxi desde una parada cercana ya que apurábamos Kioto hasta por la noche. El hotel es muy silencioso y cómodo, dormir en futones la verdad que es una experiencia, y por supuesto la habitación impecable limpia y tradicional. El desayuno es indispensable, nos encantó todo además de lo bien cuidado, limpio y rico que estaba todo. Sin duda coger este Ryokan es un acierto, nosotros estuvimos 2 noches pero perfectamente puedes estar más y hacer rutas de santuarios que hay cercanos.

Our first stay in a ryokan. Obviously when one is used to staying in "western style" hotels, a place like this will be different. But my family and I were up for it. It was fun! Pros: - a warm welcome *by name* as we exited the taxi upon arrival - innkeeper and all staff very friendly and accommodating - we had no issue communicating our needs in English - fresh kimonos provided each day we were there - inn is located in a beautiful, surprisingly remote location - meals were very traditionally Japanese - "western" bathtub and shower available in our room in case one isn't comfortable using the public bath house - innkeeper provided us with complimentary umbrellas to use all day as it was rainy--so nice! - innkeeper also provided us with complimentary shuttle transportation to the nearest JR Rail station, where we easily connected to other trains. They also dropped other guests off at nearby temples - Wi-Fi was fast and free Cons: - hallway smelled faintly of smoke, as smoking appears to be allowed in some (all?) rooms. Our room itself did not smell of smoke - interior is more traditional (some would call the decor "dated"), which may be an issue with people - if one does not eat breakfast or dinner at the inn, there are only a few other restaurants within walking distance, and none of them were open during our time there (late March)

Absolutely stunning ryokon in a tiny little mountain town just outside kyoto. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating to our needs, even preparing breakfast and transport to the station an hour early so we could catch our next train to tokyo. The ryokon itself was absolutely gorgeous, nestled away in the trees next to a mountain stream, it is a breathtaking picturesque view like something out of a ghibli film. The rooms were quite spacious and very traditional japanese style and the baths were very soothing and comfortable. All in all i highly recommended this place to anyone who is looking for a more quiet and traditional type of stay.

We loved this hotel so much. The people running the hotel are all so kind and personable. There is a slight language barrier but it was not a problem at all. The room was a great size and very comfortable. The breakfast was great and offered to every guest. You can also purchase a dinner. If you want an authentic traditional style hotel this is the place! We loved the men and women’s onsen. The hotel is set in a gully out of the city next to a river. You can take a bus to the main city or the hotel also offers a shuttle to the train station or other specific locations. If we return to Japan we would definitely make this one of our stops again!

If you want to experience traditional ryokan with fabulous meals, this is the place for you. It is a bit dated like visiting your relative’s house in the small town. It’s surrounded by maple forest, like living in a nice cabin. This is not modern hotel, if you set your expectation right, you will not be disappointed. All the stuffs are so kind and warm. They are great people dedicated to their jobs and it makes me want to visit Kyoto again.
If you want to experience traditional ryokan with fabulous meals, this is the place for you. It is a bit dated like visiting your relative’s house in the small town. It’s surrounded by maple forest, like living in a nice cabin. This is not modern hotel, if you set your expectation right, you will not be disappointed. All the stuffs are so kind and warm. They are great people dedicated to their jobs and it makes me want to visit Kyoto again.

Brilliant, stay. Beautiful location away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you are looking for a unique experience this is it. Great food (and lots of it) very friendly staff looking to please. The accomodation is slightly aged but again a hard to beat experience Can’t recommend highly enough.

The whole stay was a uniqe experience of Japan. The hotel in not brand new but the personel made this journey unforgettable. Exiting sleeping and sitting on the floor in our room. The dinner and breakfast felt like presents. Especially the breakfast looked so beautiful, a new years breakfast. I am sorry we didn't have time for a walk to the shrines. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere but they have a shuttlebus and are very helpful to fetch you up and drive you to a station in the morning.

The hotel is full of character but a bit tired. The facilities are quite basic. The menu choices are somewhat limited. The staff are very friendly and helpful, but with limited English (nothing that Google Translate could not fix). All of these shortcomings are largely compensated by magnificent location and incredible views.

My husband and I stayed at Kyoto Takao Kanko Hotel for a single night as a part of a larger Japan trip. We wanted to get outside of our comfort zone and experience a more traditional lodging. The Iocation was a bit far from Kyoto station but worth the trip and the owners were SO helpful with communicating directions and even picked us up at the closest bus station. We visited in February which is their quiet time and even then, the valley and location was so beautiful! The room was very comfortable and did not smell of smoke (which I was a little worried about). The owners were extremely kind, friendly and gracious! Even with a large language barrier, they were very helpful communicating well with us with a decent amount of English. They provided amazing food and hospitality. They even helped us deliver our bags to Kyoto station so that we had a smoother day site seeing. We would highly recommend staying at Kyoto Takao Kanko Hotel and will treasure our memories of the owners and our quick stay. Thank you!!

Absolutely stunning ryokon in a tiny little mountain town just outside kyoto. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating to our needs, even preparing breakfast and transport to the station an hour early so we could catch our next train to tokyo. The ryokon itself was absolutely gorgeous, nestled away in the trees next to a mountain stream, it is a breathtaking picturesque view like something out of a ghibli film. The rooms were quite spacious and very traditional japanese style and the baths were very soothing and comfortable. All in all i highly recommended this place to anyone who is looking for a more quiet and traditional type of stay.

Tucked away from the tourist hustle, the atmosphere is serene, quiet, and peaceful. We truly felt like we were staying in the forest. The property itself is a destination, featuring a gorgeous walking trail that leads along the river and a small path up to a lovely shrine—perfect for a morning hike. Visiting in October meant very few other tourists, making it feel like we had this pocket of nature all to ourselves. The staff are the heart of this place. They are not just excellent; they are caring and incredibly attentive. Their dedication to an excellent guest experience is evident in every detail. They even generously provided a complementary pickup from a local bus stop when we arrived and offer a convenient shuttle service to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and the train station for ongoing travel. 1. 교통이 매우 불편합니다. 교토시내에서 너무 떨어져있고 픽업서비스 제공을 해주긴 하는데, 그래도 불편합니다. 2. 시설이 너무 낡았고 청결하지 않습니다. 욕장의 탕 바닥에 모래같은 것들이 이틀내내 그대로 있었습니다. 3. 날씨는 겨울 치고는 춥지 않은 편이었는데도 실내가 너무 추워서 잠자기 어려웠습니다. 4. 아침식사는 정갈하고 맛있었습니다.

We loved this hotel so much. The people running the hotel are all so kind and personable. There is a slight language barrier but it was not a problem at all. The room was a great size and very comfortable. The breakfast was great and offered to every guest. You can also purchase a dinner. If you want an authentic traditional style hotel this is the place! We loved the men and women’s onsen. The hotel is set in a gully out of the city next to a river. You can take a bus to the main city or the hotel also offers a shuttle to the train station or other specific locations. If we return to Japan we would definitely make this one of our stops again!

The location and surroundings of this ryokan was perfect after a week of hustle and bustle of Tokyo. The staff was very kind and nice. The food was magnificent in its presentation and taste. The creek on the property was so peaceful and beautiful. Hiking to the various temples was a great fun activity to do as well. Great place to stay away from the hectic town center.

Brilliant, stay. Beautiful location away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you are looking for a unique experience this is it. Great food (and lots of it) very friendly staff looking to please. The accomodation is slightly aged but again a hard to beat experience Can’t recommend highly enough.

We spent 1 night at this traditional Japanese inn. Our room was great and it was a wonderful experience to stay somewhere with tatami mats and sleep on futons. The riverside hotel is located in the most stunning, quiet, and peaceful forest. We enjoyed exploring the quiet beauty of it. We chose the half board rate which gave us supper and breakfast. The traditional food was delicious and very filling and eating riverside while it was raining was a highlight of our family trip to Japan. We did not use the onset as it was just too hot outside and have a warm bath did not seem refreshing to us. The shuttle to the train station made things very convenient. The property is old, and can use an update, but it was the location that was important to us. We had a wonderful time.

An amazing and unique traditional stay in a small town outside of Kyoto. It is secluded and we were still able travel to Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, and Kobe. Public transportation is provided multiple time every morning, and although I did a lot I highly recommend walking around the trails, and temples. My favorite temple was right behind the hotel, and it held amazing views and was not crowded at all. This was by far one of the coolest experiences i’ve had, and if you are looking for a traditional stay this place is it. They cater to whatever need you might have, and everyone is so nice. It is hard to put into words how much I enjoyed this experience!

My husband and I stayed at Kyoto Takao Kanko Hotel for a single night as a part of a larger Japan trip. We wanted to get outside of our comfort zone and experience a more traditional lodging. The Iocation was a bit far from Kyoto station but worth the trip and the owners were SO helpful with communicating directions and even picked us up at the closest bus station. We visited in February which is their quiet time and even then, the valley and location was so beautiful! The room was very comfortable and did not smell of smoke (which I was a little worried about). The owners were extremely kind, friendly and gracious! Even with a large language barrier, they were very helpful communicating well with us with a decent amount of English. They provided amazing food and hospitality. They even helped us deliver our bags to Kyoto station so that we had a smoother day site seeing. We would highly recommend staying at Kyoto Takao Kanko Hotel and will treasure our memories of the owners and our quick stay. Thank you!!

Ett traditionellt ryokan boende i bergen nära Kyoto. Hotell standarden inte så hög men det uppvägdes av den underbara personalen som gjorde allt för att vi skulle trivas. Väldigt trevligt att äta på boendet, serveras traditionell Japansk mat både till frukost och lunch. Vacker omgivning med möjlighet till vandring.

The hotel is full of character but a bit tired. The facilities are quite basic. The menu choices are somewhat limited. The staff are very friendly and helpful, but with limited English (nothing that Google Translate could not fix). All of these shortcomings are largely compensated by magnificent location and incredible views.

Experiencia increíble, hay otros ryokans por la zona y en Kioto pero este mantiene esencia tradicional sumado a la ubicación que está es increíble. Para llegar al hotel cogimos el bus JR3 desde la estación de Kioto, y nos recogieron el personal del hotel en la parada de Takao, muy amables llevándonos y ayudándonos a ajustar el itinerario de los días en Kioto. Para salir del hotel te acercan a paradas cercanas que les digas, muy amables por su parte, y de ahí podías coger tren o bus, y para volver nosotros cogíamos taxi desde una parada cercana ya que apurábamos Kioto hasta por la noche. El hotel es muy silencioso y cómodo, dormir en futones la verdad que es una experiencia, y por supuesto la habitación impecable limpia y tradicional. El desayuno es indispensable, nos encantó todo además de lo bien cuidado, limpio y rico que estaba todo. Sin duda coger este Ryokan es un acierto, nosotros estuvimos 2 noches pero perfectamente puedes estar más y hacer rutas de santuarios que hay cercanos.

The most memorable place where we stayed during our vacation. The staff made us feel at home. The place is beautiful. The hotel is traditional and we got to experience more of the culture at this hotel. The sleeping arrangements, the dining, the interactions with the staff, the onsen.. all new wonderful memorable experiences.

First, the staff was lovely, kind and very helpful. However, the property was very old, not kept up at all, and very far outside of the city. It’s by a beautiful river, but outside of a seating area, there is no place to walk or enjoy it. The property smells of mold (if you are sensitive, you may need to pass). And there was black mold growing on the tub/shower. The breakfast was a beautiful representation of a traditional Japanese start to the day, however, and we were thankful to enjoy it.
