Excellent location, for the city and train station. The hotel was comfortable with good food. Parking was a little tight. The stairs inside the hotel are a little narrow if you are less able (understandable in such an old building)

Had a one night stay at the White Hart. The room was large and comfortable. The food was great. We had burgers that were excellent, freshly made with crunchy pit prop chips. We ate in the bar, but could have eaten in the restaurant. Parking at the rear or the property was ideal. Only a 5 minute walk into the town centre. Well worth considering if staying in St Albans.

Fourteenth century Inn, but very well converted. Shame they aren't allowed to put in a lift! Excellent base for exploring the town, about 100yds from cathedral and High Street. The staff were pleasant and helpful. Will definitely be going back!

Pleasantly located in St Albans. An historic hotel/pub. Room was pleasant, large. The shower was excellent. Absolutely blasted the water out: no flimsy trickle. However, the room was at the end of a corridor which gave the impression it should have been haunted yet no hauntings or any paranormal phenomena occurred which was disappointing. The bar is below par. Drink elsewhere such as The Boot which is excellent.

The hotel has amazing resonance with the long history of the local area and the Cathedral. It is perfectly located for all the major features of St Albans. The internal design and style illustrates the long history, back to the late 15th Century. Understand that this does not compare with a 20th Century design; and so much the better for that. The staff were extremely friendly, efficient and always too ready to help; the menus were very good. There is a good private car park immediately behind the hotel.

£216.00 for two nights in a small room with tired furniture, grubby net curtains, sink in the bedroom not the bathroom, tired mattress, pointless WiFi signal and a mouldy shower cubicle. The extractor in the shower was so bad that the steam in there was suffocating too. Breakfast was shocking. Greasy food (lots of oil on the plate) and undercooked egg. I'd told them I'm gluten free on the booking, but when they gave me toast I asked if it was gluten free and it wasn't (not good!) I asked if they have brown sauce, the waitress said yes but never returned with any 😂 didn't even get a cup of tea or coffee and there was only myself to be seen to! Hardly rushed off their feet. The next morning I went to the dining room, but nobody came out to serve me, so I did without. It's a lot of money for such a tired and uncared for hotel 😞 staff were rather cold and rather disinterested. Not exactly a friendly bunch.

Our room was on the top floor. The room was very tired, carpet stained, grout in bathroom was needing a good clean. Parking is free for residents but the car park is very tight. The staff were friendly. Pianist in the bar was very good.

This is a lovely listed building so you have to appreciate that some areas of the property are in need of attention. The windows & seals were rotten but it’s a very old property so have to accept this. The room we had was quite small but a nice comfy bed & shower room which is all we needed for a two day stay. The staff were extra friendly & helpful. We had a lovely stay in an old quirky hotel !

The hotel oozed character with its Tudor styling and timeless interior. The bar and restaurant area with its wooden panelling was charming and authentic. The bedrooms were stylish and clean with comfortable bed and seating, and the lovely warm bathroom was finished in a modern but not out of place styling. Stayed 2 nights to celebrate my birthday. Our room was on the top floor, very quirky. The room was on a bit of a slope but the furniture was on levelling props. Couldn't see out of the window unless stood on the bed, then could just about see the cathedral. Not double glazed so there was quite a bit of road noise as located on a main road. Mattress could do with replacing. Macerator toilet was rather noisy, however, the shower was the best I've ever used in a hotel, very powerful and lots of hot water. Large TV. Very handy having the free parking and easy walking access in to the town centre. Breakfast was perfect both days and so was the evening meal we had there on our 2nd night. All staff we encountered were lovely and friendly. Would definitely stay here again if visiting St. Albans

Room 14 seriously disoriented my wife because of the sloping floor. But reception were able to move us to Room 7 which was very spacious. Very old building so quirkyness to be expected.

Upon arrival and looking from outside it appeared to be an awesome place to stay. The advertised room pictures suggested the same. However, having booked and paid for a "Superior" room prior to arriving I left feeling cheated. The room was tiny and the bathroom was so small you could sit on the loo and rest your feet in the shower tray opposite at the same time! I've seen bigger bathrooms in caravans. The WiFi in room 1 was unusable. Took 10 minutes for all four of my devices to even find the hotel WiFi and once they were able to connect, there was 1 bar of signal which kept dropping out. No mobile signal there either (obviously that's not the fault of the hotel but they should up their game and provide the Wi-Fi they advertise). Advert also said that the room had blackout curtains which is untrue. My room was by the main road with a streetlamp directly opposite so was illuminated like daylight all night 😩 Curtains are like tissue paper. The windows have some effort of poor secondary glazing but this doesn't reduce the traffic noise so I was woken at 4am by a combination of traffic and light. Tonight I am in the Utilita Bowl Hilton (as I'm writing this) and have a Deluxe King room with balcony and pitch view, internet and the ability to move around. Price was 10 pence cheaper than the White Hart too so I can't help but feel ripped off by this place. I usually stay in 2 or 3 different hotels every week and this place will definitely be on my "Avoid" list for the future.

A great central location with an excellent breakfast. But if you hope for a reliable internet, don’t stay at the back of the building. I was told by staff the bad service was due to the rain, but it was still hopeless on the next sunny day. I had to go into the tea room for it to work.

It’s a privilege to stay in this ancient venue, the public areas are splendid. Room 9 on the first floor was quiet, fairly accessible, and has a well designed en-suite shower. Unfortunately the bed was very bouncy, and the duvet too small, so we didn’t sleep particularly well.

Huge room and comfortable bed. Very old style hotel with the sink in the room, not in the bathroom which isn’t that much of an issue. The room was soooo hot though. There was a fan at least, but no aircon. Would be very cute to go in winter, but definitely not during this heatwave. Staff were very friendly and helpful

Historic building on main street, but old & new have not come together well in our room. The windows do not close properly and the blackout blinds are not effective, so early light & traffic noise disturbed my sleep. The decor is basic & a bit dated. Also the shower cubicle is too small to stand comfortably.

It's our 5th time at the hotel and we really love it. It's in amazing location, the staff is super friendly and the hotel itself beautiful. The bar is a little Jewell and we are definitely coming back.

I definitely won't go back. The greeting on arrival felt hostile with the male (i presume owner) demanding my credit card to take details for the full cost of the stay despite having already paid hotels.com in full. I expected to give a £50 authorisation which is the standard amount but not £116! And he wouldn't hear of me questioning it. The room itself felt clean, although very small and the bathroom literally had a loo and a shower with no room to be able to close the door. When i tried to get to sleep it was awful. The noise from the bar downstairs carried on till after 11pm and the bed was the most uncomfortable I've ever slept on, it felt like the mattress was as thin as a sheet on top of a hard board. I woke up at 2am with a terrible sore back and had to fold up the duvet and sleep on top of it just to try and get comfy. Hotels.com have this as a 3 star but when looking on Google is actually a 2 star which i would NEVER have booked if I'd known baring in mind there's a premier inn for cheaper just up the road. An awful experience

My stay was ruined by the refusal to return my deposit for any incidental expenses. I was told that the £25 would be returned on checkout. On request for the refund I was informed that it was being retained because I stayed in a dog-friendly room when I had not been informed at any time previously. This is a lovely historic hotel and we enjoyed our stay apart from one thing (but this was promptly rectified) : initially we had a front bedroom facing the road which was busy and noisy all through the night. Fortunately we were able to upgrade to a rear bedroom which was wonderfully spacious and with much better facilities. The staff were very pleasant, polite and efficient, the hotel was fascinating and well-kept, and we would certainly stay there again.

Had an issue parking my car on arrival, but managed to do so in the end. Room was small, power out of the shower was really weak, which was frustrating as needed a good shower especially as the room had no air con. Staffing level was inadequate, as breakfast in the morning was so slow, one girl on her own, and would not surprise me if she was also cooking the food! The food itself was just about edible, incapable of cooking fried eggs as they were served hard despite asking for runny eggs. A lot of people were frustrated and sympathy was with the young lady who was doing her best. When I checked out unbelievably I was checked out by the girl who was serving breakfast!!! The lady in the back office seemed incapable of working the payment card and called her to the reception. Neither I nor my friends in the group would consider staying in this hotel again.

What a fabulous friendly welcoming hotel. The receptionist who checked us in was very friendly and helpful. When we had breakfast, we were also impressed with how efficient and friendly the server was. Will definitely return.

The decision to stop in St.Albans was initially because it was a convenient stopover place for London, due to the easy commute into the city. However, as soon as we arrived and saw the cathedral ACROSS the road we knew that one of our days would be better spent experiencing this beautiful and historically rich place. We even arrived on a festival day! Lots of walking meant that sleeping in a comfortable bed was a priority and the hotel scored highly on this! Breakfast was varied and set us up for the days of sightseeing we had planned. This is an old property so if you want ultra modern go to one of the generic hotels in the vicinity. If, however, you want unique, complete with doors that those tall amongst us need to duck under, then head for here. Clean, comfortable, friendly. I’m keeping this postcode stored in my sat nav for future use.

Hard to describe - it has it‘s own, but old Tudor‘s charme which you may love. It was a one time experience for me as this hotel is no match to the Samuel Rider next door. The street facing room gave me a lot of traffic impression even during the night.

Fourteenth century Inn, but very well converted. Shame they aren't allowed to put in a lift! Excellent base for exploring the town, about 100yds from cathedral and High Street. The staff were pleasant and helpful. Will definitely be going back!

The internal design and style illustrates the long history, back to the late 15th Century. Understand that this does not compare with a 20th Century design; and so much the better for that. The staff were extremely friendly, efficient and always too ready to help; the menus were very good. There is a good private car park immediately behind the hotel.

We ate in the bar, but could have eaten in the restaurant. Parking at the rear or the property was ideal. Only a 5 minute walk into the town centre. Well worth considering if staying in St Albans.

Stayed 2 nights to celebrate my birthday. Our room was on the top floor, very quirky. The room was on a bit of a slope but the furniture was on levelling props. Couldn't see out of the window unless stood on the bed, then could just about see the cathedral. Not double glazed so there was quite a bit of road noise as located on a main road. Mattress could do with replacing. Macerator toilet was rather noisy, however, the shower was the best I've ever used in a hotel, very powerful and lots of hot water. Large TV. Very handy having the free parking and easy walking access in to the town centre. Breakfast was perfect both days and so was the evening meal we had there on our 2nd night. All staff we encountered were lovely and friendly. Would definitely stay here again if visiting St. Albans

£216.00 for two nights in a small room with tired furniture, grubby net curtains, sink in the bedroom not the bathroom, tired mattress, pointless WiFi signal and a mouldy shower cubicle. I'd told them I'm gluten free on the booking, but when they gave me toast I asked if it was gluten free and it wasn't (not good!) I asked if they have brown sauce, the waitress said yes but never returned with any 😂 didn't even get a cup of tea or coffee and there was only myself to be seen to! Hardly rushed off their feet. The next morning I went to the dining room, but nobody came out to serve me, so I did without. It's a lot of money for such a tired and uncared for hotel 😞 staff were rather cold and rather disinterested. Not exactly a friendly bunch.

The hotel oozed character with its Tudor styling and timeless interior. The bar and restaurant area with its wooden panelling was charming and authentic. Staff were friendly, and room was very nice... food was excellent.. Problem we had was in the heatwave we only had a small fan, which could not keep up with cooling the room, so was a very sweaty night... And the stairs to Room C2 was very steep, which was a problem for the wife with a not so good knee. Parking on the property was a bonus, but could get full very quickly..... Hotel is close to everywhere which was fantastic. We asked / booked for 2 nights, but seems Hotels.com somehow only booked us for 1 night, seeing as it was our 45th Anniversary, well that got spoilt as we had to leave..

The rooms vary quite a lot from spacious to really small so knowing the rooms helps. On this trip I stayed twice on different dates and on the second stay had room C1 which is excellent and I would try to get again. The windows in the rooms are original and single paned so you do get some road noise in a lot of the rooms. However, C1 has newer windows and much less noise. Overall I will be staying again.
