Expedia Site says there is a Gym at the property. Which is why I booked this reasonably priced hotel. There is no Gym and the apology I received was inadequate. The hotel is set in lovely grounds, Minimal efforts made to conserve energy or reduce plastic.

We always stay here when visiting family who live close by. Hotel is beautifully situated and has a good size car park. Although rooms are looking a little tired, especially the bathrooms, it is always clean and the beds comfy. It could really do with having the rooms upgraded it would make the stay perfect. Good breakfast with plenty of choice.

The welcome from the lady on reception was outstanding, what a great member of the team! The lady who was on breakfast duty, again very friendly. The grounds were lovely for the dogs to have a stretch and a run. From then on it went downhill quite rapidly. Communal areas around bar not cleaned and we were told we could sit and eat our food here with the dogs but the tables were to low and not suitable to eat at so decided to eat in our room (£5.00 charge) the food arrived a burger which was supposed to be juicy was very crisp and over done( definitely didn’t look like the picture) and the macaroni cheese was an absolute joke hardly any sauce and penne pasta. Food of a low standard. No salt or pepper on tray or offer of any sauces. Another thing to look out for is the step from the room to the garden so we could let the dogs out ( which at the time sounded amazing) which after I had managed to unlock it was very dangerous. The step was over a knee deep and thank goodness it was light as I could of done a lot of damage to myself. This hotel has so much potential, and could be absolutely amazing given a make over, it has some exceptional staff as well as some staff who could do with some extra training, just needs some attention to the small things, get rid of the bathroom extras like sewing kits and spend the money on a lick of paint and a good spruce up then we would return, but sadly we would not choose to stay again in its current state.

Breakfast menu was good, on Monday it was cooked to order - the food that arrived was good, but had been cooked for a while! Bar was card only, as they had 'run out of change' from an event held on Saturday. Then on Monday to Wednesday evening it was still card only. Staffing of the bar was a bit sporadic. often no one around. Bedroom and bathroom def looking tired and in need of a refresh. Overall a pleasant stay but can't say I'll be rushing back.

Self service breakfast usually really good but disappointed on this visit. No plates/bowls out had to ask, missing breakfast items and food not hot. Could do with some sound proofing for rooms above the function rooms as music very loud and could clearly hear the songs being played.

Very tired and work hotel that is in major need of investment. Booked for a double room, got a twin, so had to wear socks in bed as I’m 6’5” and the room was freezing. Also now in garage getting a £450 quote to replace wheel damaged by massive potholes in the drive. Worst nights sleep in years.

Lovely building, friendly staff, great breakfast, easy parking and plenty of it, lovely smelling toiletries in the bathroom. Only negative for me would be a bit more attention to detail on the cleaning, overall it was good but there were crumbs all around the bedpost when we arrived that hadn’t been dealt with. I’d like to believe it was just something overlooked as the rest of the place was spotless but in the interests of objectivity, I couldn’t ignore it in my review. It wouldn’t put me off coming back :)

Bath tub filthy. No rnning cold water in the sink. Taps not working in bath tub. Shower dripped all night. Limited tea bags and milk. Couldn't see through the window absolutely filthy. Felt damp! Breakfast was varied and plentiful but althpugh room was basic, we expected running cold water in the sink No glasses anyway so couldnt drink water even!

The grounds and surrounding area are beautiful but inside the hotel is tired and feels unclean. The bathroom taps were falling apart, light switches weren’t working and the carpets and furniture in the room were very old and worn. Staff were good and attentive but it wasn’t a great stay. I’ll look for alternatives in future.

Staff were lovely and grounds beautiful but the room itself was not in a great condition. Our dog immediately found a mouldy ice cream lid behind the curtains, and the shower was so old and worn you couldn’t see how to work it. The bed was very uncomfortable and the place is so old and creaky you could hear every movement in the room above us. The room was awful photos attached! The hotel is dirty outside, cigarette butt's, broken glasses and vomit on the steps. The bed had no duvet inside the cover it was a mattress topper! Very uncomfortable. The bathroom had had work which was unfinished.

Lovely comfy room with large double aspect window. Think it may have been newly refurbished, if so it’s a shame the bathroom hadn’t also been updated. Bathroom clean but dated. Water in hot tap came out scalding so really needed warning about this. Went to hotel over a very warm weekend so strange bathroom towel rail/radiator wasn’t just warm to dry towels is was red hot and you couldn’t touch it. There was no way to alter the heat on this radiator. Coffee machine as well as kettle in the room. We stay in this hotel regularly and they NEVER leave enough tea bags and milk. (2 tea bags, 3 milk) so always need to ask for more and mention this every time we stay.

This was a budget priced stay of one night and this was reflected in the overall quality. The room was clean and tidy although a little worse for wear. There were scratches on the wall nearest one of the beds, retouched paintwork on the bathroom door, a dirty glass in the bathroom. The wifi wasn't readily accessible, there was limited mobile network coverage and no telephone in the room. There was a note welcoming us from the manager which was a nice touch. The hotel itself was really damp with a leaking roof just on entering the reception area. (However it was pouring down that night). The staff were pleasant and efficient. The main concern for me was that I hadnt realised it was a pet friendly hotel, which wouldn't have been a problem normally (I'm a pet owner myself) but two doors down on our corridor there was a group of dogs staying and they barked all night. My fault really for not appreciating the compromises that come with a country house hotel. The room was large and well maintained but having no air con and no proper ventilation in the bathroom meant it fell short of what I think a 4 star hotel is like. Breakfast was very good and the staff were very willing to help when asked.

Building is old but in need of much updating and attention to fittings (most taps very wobbly, bathroom fittings throughout are extremely shabby and disappointing). Rooms not dirty but style and presentation of old furnishings results in feeling its not that good. Worst thing was the HEAT!!! Yes it was a heatwave last week but in a cool day when it had rained, we were forced to leave the fan on ALL DAY while we were out and all night with the window open (only upended a few inches) just to attempt to have some breeze. Fans gave no respite, just moving hot air round. The place really needs air con, prob hard to fit but it's a venue for weddings and ought to cater to a better caliber than it does. That said, all staff were helpful, friendly and can't fault them. Breakfast was good. Two for one on Saturdays made it worth it but would be pricey at £17.95 each of booked in the day. Check that before booking. Building would be hard to get around in if disabled. No lift and lots of stairs around and long hallways. Disabled parking spaces x 3 but not located very close to access without stairs immediately inside and not near the front of the building. There were closer parking spaces under the flags, not sure why these are prioritised over disabled parking in terms of proximity. Have stayed here twice, liked location, had thought it shabby first time but gave it a second chance. Prob wouldn't stay here again as it is right now. Shame. Could be lovely but needs work.

We stay in this hotel at least twice a year when we visit family who live very close by. Lovely setting, large car park. Hotel rooms - some are looking very 'tired', others have been redecorated and very nice but all a good size. Bathrooms clean but could do with an upgrade. Breakfast good. Staff friendly.

Having done some painful damage to my knee, I arrived walking with a walking stick. I was put in a room up several flights of stairs and there is no lift (but they don't tell you that on their website). I had to drag my bags up while trying to hold onto the banister to pull myself up the stairs. I saw other guests struggling with bags on the stairs too. Yes, it was a hot night, but you could have almost cooked your dinner in the oven of a room I was put in, with only a small window and, being a hotel room with a closed door, obviously no through draught of any kind. A desk fan that barely moved a piece of paper around was my only source of ventilation, so I barely slept a wink, then had a 2o00 mile drive the next day. I have had many enjoyable stays in Mercure hotels in the past, but I won't be returning to or recommending this one. I even ended up not eating because of the trip up and down stairs again that I faced, and it was too hot in my room to sit eating there. I wouldn't normally give such a grim review of anywhere, and had some thoughtfulness of my mobility issues been forthcoming then I wouldn't be doing this now. The hotel looked tired and it was too expensive for what it was.

A hidden gem of a hotel. Beautiful building, lovely surroundings. My only reason for not giving it a 5 across the board was that there was a private party in one of the function rooms. Not an issue in itself, however I felt the staff were stretched quite thin as a result and the service was quite slow at dinner, to the point that we had to keep trying to find someone to serve, get the bill etc. Other than that, we had a great time and it wouldn’t deter me from coming back

Lovely, friendly, and efficient staff! We were greeted by friendly staff & check in was very straight forward. Dinner was served by lovely staff and the food selection was very good. Breakfast was delicious, with plenty of variety for all tastes. Our room was clean and comfortable, and excellent value.

The welcome from the lady on reception was outstanding, what a great member of the team! The lady who was on breakfast duty, again very friendly. The grounds were lovely for the dogs to have a stretch and a run. From then on it went downhill quite rapidly. Communal areas around bar not cleaned and we were told we could sit and eat our food here with the dogs but the tables were to low and not suitable to eat at so decided to eat in our room (£5.00 charge) the food arrived a burger which was supposed to be juicy was very crisp and over done( definitely didn’t look like the picture) and the macaroni cheese was an absolute joke hardly any sauce and penne pasta. Food of a low standard. No salt or pepper on tray or offer of any sauces. Another thing to look out for is the step from the room to the garden so we could let the dogs out ( which at the time sounded amazing) which after I had managed to unlock it was very dangerous. The step was over a knee deep and thank goodness it was light as I could of done a lot of damage to myself. This hotel has so much potential, and could be absolutely amazing given a make over, it has some exceptional staff as well as some staff who could do with some extra training, just needs some attention to the small things, get rid of the bathroom extras like sewing kits and spend the money on a lick of paint and a good spruce up then we would return, but sadly we would not choose to stay again in its current state.

Bar was card only, as they had 'run out of change' from an event held on Saturday. Then on Monday to Wednesday evening it was still card only. Staffing of the bar was a bit sporadic. often no one around. Bedroom and bathroom def looking tired and in need of a refresh. Overall a pleasant stay but can't say I'll be rushing back.

Whilst I understand we arrived at 9.21pm after travelling for over 3 hours we weren’t told the restaurant (or any area for that matter) would not provide food after 9.30 Hence we made do with crisps from the “non-attended” bar. It’s a great location very picturesque but lacked “warmth” or a welcoming feel. TW.

We had a good overall experience, we were slightly let down by the cleaners over the duration of our stay however customer service was amazing and they sorted everything out instantly! Shae the lady behind the front desk deserves a pay rise or managerial status, she was amazing!

We always stay here when visiting family who live close by. Hotel is beautifully situated and has a good size car park. Although rooms are looking a little tired, especially the bathrooms, it is always clean and the beds comfy. It could really do with having the rooms upgraded it would make the stay perfect. Good breakfast with plenty of choice.

Characterful property in open countryside with good free parking. A car is needed for getting about as no immediate public transport (40 minute walk to nearest bus stop). Set in lovely grounds with seating outside for warmer days and plenty inside when it isn't so nice. Large room with bath and shower though minmal sockets and not near bed. Good for relaxing and not being distracted by phones. There was an event on the evening we stayed but music stopped by 11pm. Great for a relaxing break.

The staff were lovely, and very helpful. Our room was also very nice & clean. Only one small gripe…. The cooked breakfast wasn’t very warm. The hotplates didn’t appear to do their job. Also, the rotary toaster kept getting stuck. This kept the already busy staff very stretched. They could do with some better equipment 😁

The 2 ladies on staff were excellent. I proved late (2130) and checked in ok but could not order food (I’d been travelling for 6hrs) I ordered from the room service menu - a sandwich - which I had to collect from the bar as no one was free to deliver to me yet I was still charged a tray charge. Also - it did not come with the extras promised - just a cheese sandwich on a plate. No mirrors in the room only the bathroom. No toast offered at breakfast. I travel a lot for work and For a hotel that looks really nice - it falls short.

Self service breakfast usually really good but disappointed on this visit. No plates/bowls out had to ask, missing breakfast items and food not hot. Saturday Breakfast cooked to order but still not hot Room comfortable but carpet poorly fitted so a bit of a trlip haazard. Could do with some sound proofing for rooms above the function rooms as music very loud and could clearly hear the songs being played.

Very easy to check in, our room was on the second floor, but it was very hot. They did supply two fans, but it was still hot in the room. Plenty of parking. Hotel does need a little bit of updating for example cleaning the doors would help. The standard of the room was very very clean..

Useful location, nice staff but the room was really tired, in particular the bathroom, there was a mushroom growing behind the loo!! Noisy too, my room seemed near a kitchen or something so constant fan noise all night, not so bad with window shut Fine for a quick business stay but could do with a proper spruce up.

Staff on arrival were very welcoming, we were treated to a surprise complimentary room upgrade which was lovely. Booked a table for dinner and given a drinks voucher and the table was laid nicely as it was our anniversary. However, 1 of the waiters who bought our drinks was quite rude and you could tell he didn't want to be there. He took our drinks voucher but didn't remove it from the bill (luckily I checked before paying) the food service was very slow and there were some mix up with the allergy matrix, however I will give credit to the chef/team as they checked all the food before and advised what I could & couldn't eat. The food however was really nice! Breakfast the following morning was a bit disappointing and there wasn't much for gluten free on cold buffet, however they did cook fresh hot food and had gf bread/toast too. Breakfast on our last morning took forever to be seated, noone came so we sat ourselves and then had to find someone to ask for gluten free. The rooms don't have Aircon and it was warm, especially overnight, though there was a small fan provided.

The hotel is nicely situated but starting to look a little tired. Paintwork is tired, discoloured and scuffed in places and colour scheme could do with updating. Having said that, the staff are extremely good, and check in and booking were excellent. The weather was very hot, so someone had opened the window and put a fan on. We were also allocated a room well away from the wedding celebrations which was thoughtful. No lift, no air con. Both would be good and appropriate and raise the standard. I was impressed that despite a wedding and a coach tour, our dinner was very fresh and tasty and served quickly.
