The Carmen Hotel - Ocean Front

Great location in heart of Playa Del Carmen. Hotel has nice rooms and design. However, has aged and could use a bit of TLC. Roof pool area is small and there are no lounge chairs, just couches and normal chairs. Overall, descent place to stay at a good price point.

Terrible hotel. Just spend a little more and stay somewhere else. When we checked in it felt like we were bothering the receptionist. She just asked for our ID’s and credit card and went straight to letting us know that if we lost the key we will get charged for it. That’s pretty much all the information she gave us. We asked for two room keys, since it was two of us, and she said we could only get one…. The music from Sr Frogs it’s ridiculously loud and it does on all day. You will be up at 8am with all the roosters from the lot across from the hotel. We didn’t have hot water the first day. One of the elevators was broken for two days. The swimming pool area could be really nice but looks like they just gave up on this hotel. The bar is a total joke, the pool furniture is old and dirty. The water is freezing. The bar staff is very unwelcoming. And to top it off when we asked pool staff for pool towels they said we had to go to the lobby for them lol. I’ve stayed in 20 different hotels in playa del Carmen and this is the first time I write a review.

Restaurant geschlossen, direkt am Strand aber keine Sonnenliegen, keine Sonnenschime, nix Umgebung in der Nacht sehr laut. Hotel etwas in die Jahre gekommen, Zimmer aber gut und groß. Frühstück eher schlecht. Für den normalen Preis absolut überteuert, ich habe je Nacht ca 80USD bezahlt, das ist OK

A stone’s throw away from The Beach, 5th Avenue and all of The Excitement…… Pool can use a Good cleaning but Otherwise, The Rooftop was Nice:)

Do not go here if you plan on enjoying the beach or the pool. There is no umbrella coverage anywhere on the property and no pool chairs upstairs. They refuse to put umbrellas up on the beach even though they have them. Total of 6 chairs for the whole hotel. Music is blasting until midnight every night. The hotel itself is also run down with lots of water/moisture damage. If you like to party and want to be in a busy and loud location, then it could be recommended.

The rooftop pool was closed. :( Restaurant was closed. There was no running water for about 6 hours

No parking but otherwise everything great

I loved the modern vibe and the great pool. The location is excellent, and overall it’s a fantastic stay. The only small improvement I’d suggest is updating the beach club lounge chairs, as they’re a bit worn, and possibly adding a parking partnership with a nearby parking lot.

All is perfect just the roof top/bar needs some renovations!

Beautiful hotel, nice access to the beach and nice view from the room. Did not get a sheet change during all stay, how i know? there were 3 little blood stain on the beeding that stayed there during our whole stay. Other than that, would recommend and visit again if i ever go to PdC.

The property was located in a great spot their cleanliness was not the greatest for the price that was paid. My grandmother suffers from itchy skin and will sometimes bleed. Instead of them switching them out as they were cleaning they turned them around.

Pictures did not match the accommodation. It was very worn. The towel in our room was crusty in the shower and the shiwer itsslf was disgusting. We booked this for the jacuzzi and it didn’t work. We went to the pool after being disappointed by the room and it was even more disappointing. All the chairs were ripped, the patio was covered in trash and the pool had trash and hair floating in it. The pool tiles were broken and missing. Surfaces were dirty and slimy. It was horrible. Do not book this place. We splurged on this room and we’ve stayed in motels for 50$ nicer than this.

The hotel needs to be more maintenance smell old .. towels are really old and hard

Black mold all over the ceiling in room 307. Strong mold smell. Front desk staff is rude and ignorant (Except for the manager, she was nice ). We stayed 7 nights . Last 2 days they stopped cleaning our room . First time we complained front desk lady tried to argue that they did clean it because it was checked "cleaned" on their records, then rolled her eyes and said she will report it to the management.... Second day they said they didnt clean because they didnt have enough cleaning staff but they took the tip and left the room dirty.... Also beware of hidden fees. $20 per person per day (our fault, we didnt read fine print upon booking ) but they also forced people to purchase their New Year $350 per person buffet/party package (those who arrived closer to the NY day) which was ridiculous so people had no choice but to celebrate at their hotel so money wont go to waste. We wont be visiting again .

Stinky musty ass smelling room

I booked a standard king room. I was assigned to room 200 or 201 cant remember. Which was a dirty room in the end corner of the hall. Strong mildew smell. Immediately went to the front desk to ask to be moved to a different room. I was told there was no more rooms and they would send house keeping up to check out the smell. I went on expedia and the hotel site directly, low and behold a room was still available. Same exact room I originally booked. I inspected the room further. There was mold on the shower head. Stained sheets. Bug on the pillow. Counter tops did not look properly wiped. Floor was not mopped. Couch had little pieces of what looked like dirt on it. Went back down to the front desk and was told they have to reach out to their supervisor to switch me rooms. He told me I would not be charged for moving rooms. Well I certainly hope not considering the first room was atrocious due to no fault of my own. Man at the desk went to check out the new room before assigning it to me. I get to the new room 204, smells like housekeeping sprayed air freshner to mask the smell. Wasnt as bad as the first room though. The room was in much better condition than the first room but still not the best. Needless to say I sucked it up. There was no hot water when taking a shower. Walls were paper thin, I could hear the people in the room next to me snoring. Noisy at night due to area. (Not hotels fault) PROs Staff was friendly. View on rooftop beautiful, good location.

The location was great for this hotel. However the staff was rude and dismissive. Also, a couple of our rooms were not thoroughly cleaned even after mentioning to cleaning staff that there was a roach in the room.

When we got to Playa del Carmen the GPS directed us to the wrong street so it took us over one hour to find the hotel. Then we had to park about 5 blocks away since there is no parking around the hotel. When we got to the room the first thing that hit us was a musty/moldy smell. Even though the room looked clean, the smell bothered us but we got used to it. The design of the room was awesome other than there was nothing to stop the shower water from running into the toilet room. One day our room didn't get cleaned until 4 o'clock and the next day it got missed all together. They said they had staffing issues. There are some noisy nightclubs close by which kept my wife up in the evening whereas I can sleep through anything. The breakfast was below average with very little variety. The front desk was always polite and helpful. I would say that the hotel was average at best.

The ocean breezes, unique rooms, the music from the club next door, and great location make this one of my favorite places in Playa

Ok, If you’re driving, the two blocks closest to Hotel are for walking only, but you can drive your car all the way to the front door to download your luggage, and the drive back to a private parking lot 2 blocks away from the hotel, it will cost you $300.00 pesos for 24hrs. The lady at front desk really nice and helpfull. If you want your room to be quiet, then this is not your hotel, the hotel is surrounded by bars and restaurant with live music and DJs, sooo really noisy room.

Internet non-fonctionnel la plupart du temps, le soir ça ne fonctionne juste pas! L’eau de la piscine était « grasse » et l’état des divans extérieurs était dégradé. La chambre était par contre était en très bonne état et l’AC fonctionne parfaitement

The location is excellent, right on 5th avenue, you can walk around everywhere and it’s right in front of the beach. However, the room was outdated, there is no privacy in the restroom so be mindful If you are not going with your partner. The balcony didn’t have a lock which made us feel unsafe. They denied our request to get more towels because only one per guest was allowed. Keep in mind there is no room service so there is no phone in the room for any needs you may have. If you don’t about any of those, the location was good for the price?

I had a sunrise suite and the view was breathtaking!

Very nice room but definitely starting to show its age. Main vent in center of room leaked water the entire stay. For the proce and location its well worth it though.

Missed for being a 4.5 star property. I would call it a 3.5 star property. Location was great, a block from 5th street. Hotel lacked 4-5 star amenities. There is no phone in the room. Bathroom door is sliding and doesn’t allow for much privacy. Balcony was nice with a view to the ocean. Bed was comfy, but the tv would not work. Had to screen record our phones to tv and that didnt work half the time. Affordable option, but dont expect 4 5 accommodations. The rooftop bar was nice, they had live music and a great view. Centrally located to everything. Recommend taking ADO bus, station is about a 10 minute walk from hotel. From cancan airport it was about 25 pesos.

Great location: a block off Quenta Avenida (lots of bar & restaurants - pretty touristy) & beachfront. Loved the mid-century modern vibe, room was clean & comfortable. Amazing ocean view from private deck. EDM music from both the rooftop bar & the restaurant/bar got old but not a deal breaker. Breakfast was included & delicious. Note: there is no beach for the property: you have to walk down or up the ocean front. A lot of the adjacent beachfront is owned by other hotels or condos but there are some beach clubs where you can rent lounges & get food/drinks. Enjoyed my stay & recommend if you're interested in Playa del Carmen stay outside the all-inclusives.

This was my third stay at this hotel. The staff is great - both Lupeta and Joceline at the reception were a great help throughout the stay. The free breakfast is generous, location is perfect right at the ocean. Rooms are very clean and comfortable.

Staff was very attentive. Check in is at 3:00 pm but they were able to give me my room by 1:00 pm since it was ready. That was pretty sweet. Also, I love have they have a water cooler in every floor.

Unfortunately I never received my refund of $100 back, despite me reaching out multiple times and them guaranteeing I would receive it back. I was also charged $17 days after my stay on my credit card, despite them saying that they no longer had my credit card information. We were also not informed of the mandatory extra fees per night per person upon arrival.

Do NOT stay here unless you like loud music all day and night, rude stuff and really musty smelling rooms! The music is so loud you can’t enjoy your patio or sleep. When we would come back to the room after dinner the hotel staff in the lobby would rudely accuse us of trespassing if we used the lobby bathroom or sat outside to look at the ocean before going upstairs. The moldy/musty air in our room made us both not feel well and the hotel staff refused to cancel our remaining nights or help us in any way. The location is in the heart of the nightlife if that’s what you’re looking for. The pool could best be described as an oversized bathtub- certainly not a pool. We would not recommend anything about this place to anyone. Had they made any attempt to help us in any way, or even just made us feel welcome instead of constantly harassed coming and going, I wouldn’t have posted a bad review but our experience was terrible and the staff was unhelpful and rude.

I had a great time at The Carmen. Probably the more central location you could have. You stew right near everything, restaurants, nightlife. The staff was great! Always helping me out with recommendations of where to go! Walter was great and everyone at the property were helpful. Would definitely come back!

It is a beautifully design hotel in a super noisy area. I enjoyed it. When I checked in, I was asked for my credit card that was charged $100 deposit. I was assured the deposit will be returned immediately. Two months later, after endless attempts the hotel still did NOT return my $100 deposit which is absolutely outrageous. They admitted that they have made a mistake. But still did NOT return my $100. It's an expensive hotel for a certain type of crowd. Charging deposits and NOT returning them is not cool. I demand immediate return of my deposit. Needless to say, I have all conversations with the hotel staff on WhatsApp. Do NOT trust these people

Staff was super friendly and helpful. I felt safe the entire time as a solo traveler. Great happy hour specials and tasty food options. Menu pricing was similar to surrounding restaurants. It was exactly what I needed.

Excellent location, central to everything. Rooftop pool with a bar very relaxing with amazing views. It is beachfront however no actual beach area for the hotel. You will be able to hear music throughout the night from nearby bars and restaurants but overall enjoyed the stay here.

This is a great location at the center of 5th avenue the busiest street in Playa de carmen. I would definately stay there again for a great location purpose.

This is a great property. Nice rooftop restaurant, bar & pool with incredible views! Beach restaurant is great too. Accommodating friendly staff, excellent location one block from all the action on 5th Avenue. Stay here!

Overall I had a very good stay. Easy to walk here from Ado touristica station with bags. Lots of restaurants near by. The beach is nice but very rocky so I hurt my legs a bit in the waves. I always got a sunbed on the beach or rooftop no problem. They clean the seaweed from The beach like every 30 mins. You get beach towels from reception. Breakfast was good and I liked that it lasted untill 11am. Bed was huge and comfy. View from partial ocean view room was very nice and ofc from rooftop too. Pelicans fly so close to you it feels like you can touch them. Hotel itself has some things showing it's age but it didn't bother me. I don't expect perfection. The extra charge of 20usd/night was a suprise though. It makes the cost a bit too high for me.

Restaurant was closed for remodeling. Continental breakfast was awful. Staff apparently did not care about the breakfast. One concierge was not very freindly but the second was helpful beyond expectations. Overall not a bad visit. Just eat elsewhere.

Staff is very friendly. Description in the hotel pages is a little inaccurate. Beware of the super fine print. Food here is bland and just ok. Room was dated but really cute. It was very noisy at night but we could deal with it. The roof top pool is falling apart and the bar area has seen better days. The restaurant/beach area is cute but again misleading. The lounge chairs are not included in your resort fee and there are no beach umbrellas unless your sitting in the bar area

This property is central to the downtown core area, however, it’s not as clean as the photos online. There’s no parking available so it makes it difficult to get to the hotel when the streets are closed and then you have to pay to park nearby for $250 pesos a day. The free breakfast is unclear. We got different information from two different waiters. The first day my breakfast order took 45 mins and was wrong and cold. There’s no happy hour that we saw and definitely no mezcal tasting as advertised. Also, be prepared to pay $19.99 usd per person per night for these “extra” services that are not worth it. I’m not sure we would return. The beach out front is also very tiny and not worth it.

Advertisement for bkfast was all misinformed by their displayed images. There's nothing like that at the restaurant and everything like pizza is tortilla flour very tasteless; with their bkfast you need to order through menu in which it's limited and some of the staffs are rude n friendly less. They wait till its ur check-in time before they ask u to fill forms instead of having it done prior to your time. The scene is beautiful because of the Caribbean sea view... Their water is full of chlorine it's too strong u can smell it which I reacted to. When u take a bath, the water goes to the toilet cause it's separated and we had to always clean. Since this is a tourist destination we expect their staffs to understand English and be able express themselves in English but it's a NO. I have to google translate before they get what I meant... A couple of days before our checkout we saw a roach, video it with still image went to the reception and made a report about it. No one from the management came to say a thing nor any apology note which is horibble n disrespectful like they don't care about u but only the money.
