The Valley of Rocks Hotel

Very run down. Our room was clean and comfortable. No food and bar closed. We stayed 18 months ago, very dissapointed at how the place has gone down hill in that time. Staff were amazing cannot fault them, friendly,helpful,polite.

This does not qualify as a hotel. It is a hostel. All you get is a room. There is no food no bar no service. The lift doesn't work and according to reviews it hasn't been working for at least a month but we were not advised of this in advance. Room was pleasant and bed comfy but it was extremely expensive for just a room. Website advertised breakfast, snacks, a bar and a lift none of which were available. Greatly misleading.

Great location, great staff, property in need of lots of maintenance, lift out of use, kitchen closed so no food, bar shut, building very run down and out dated.

We stayed here for 2 nights. The room was large and comfortable with great views of Lynton town. We were on the 3rd floor of the hotel and the lift was out of order for the entire stay. If you have mobility problems this would be a problem. The hotel is a grand old building and was inexpensive so perfect for our needs.

Very old, charming building that has seen better days and could do with some updating and new decoration. However was clean and was very close to local shops and places to eat. Also have to say the Receptionist, Rachel was fabulous and was very helpful and had great local knowledge which helped when planning our stay. There is a small car park for the hotel for which you pay £6 per day and this needs to be booked directly with the hotel as spaces are limited. Would certainly go back for another visit.

Hotel was fine but restaurant and bar were unexpectedly closed and the garden was overgrown and unusable. Early morning Street noise was loud and woke us up. Staff especially Rachel went above and beyond to welcome and assist us. Excellent location within the town and surrounding area.

Great location on the hills above Lynmouth, but definitely in need of some TLC. Friendly check-in, but were advised that the kitchen was closed so no breakfast was available. There was a great view from the first floor room, which was in need of redecoration and generally brightening up, with scuffs on the walls and peeling paint in the bathroom (which was bigger than usual and with a decent shower) There were a few parking spaces available behind the hotel (£5 per day)

Good value and the hotel is in an excellent location in the centre of town, with fabulous views. Only slight disadvantage is that the lift was not working. Also the hotel is very popular with dog owners, which we did not realise. If you don't like dogs, the occasional barking or the implications of having animals in the hotel it may not be for you. But great if you are a dog owner. There is very limited parking in the hotel so that needs to be booked, though there is parking nearby. Good selection of shops and restaurants nearby too. This is not a luxury hotel but it has all you need, is comfortable, in a great location and the staff are very cheery.

Booked for a solo trip with my dog (additional £10 for dog to stay) - the room was clean and tidy, a little run down but I knew that upon booking as wasn't looking for somewhere pricey/fancy. The lady at reception was really lovely and welcoming (Rachel I believe), and they love dogs so big bonus for us. I booked a single room but was upgraded to a twin to allow space for my dog's crate which was really thoughtful. Lovely view of the ocean from the back entrance/carpark. It's a 20 minute walk down to the beach, and just round the corner from the hotel is a beautiful coast walk leading to Valley of the Rocks, so it's in a great location. BOOK PARKING IN ADVANCE - very tight, only space for about 6 or 7 cars, so call in advance (£6 a night). Would definitely bring my dog here again.

This is a grade 2 listed building and is beautiful. Some might say it's a bit outdated, but that's definitely part of its charm. We had a huge room that was very clean and comfortable. The lady on reception was fantastic and helped me up with our luggage while my partner parked the car. There is pre bookable parking at the rear for only £6 a day, and you can park out front to sort out your luggage. The views are spectacular, and the room was lovely and quiet. There's no food available but plenty of places to eat in or take out close by. Reception staff were fantastic and so happy to help. They made us feel like royalty from the moment we booked the hotel. There is a lift if you need it. We plan to stay again as it was perfect and so special.

Offering excellent value for money this hotel right in the middle of Lynton and perfect for a weekend away. Its Victorian features hark back to it's time as a premium hotel and today it is adequate for a stay in the beautiful part of the country. The bed was comfortable and room and bathroom clean.

Over priced for a rundown hotel without restaurant or breakfast facility. We found hairs and stains on bed sheets. Cobwebs around the room and particular around the sash windows.

Room dirty, bathroom dirty. Bed lining looked like it had been slept in. Someone contact lens still on the sideboard. We complained. They cleaned room , when we went back in the fumes of beach was so strong burning our eyes. We left the hotel any stayed somewhere else. Staff room master keys were left on the bed .

Room needed updating and cleanliness needs attention. Stains on carpet. No bar facilities bar permanently closed. Staff very friendly and helpful. Lady on breakfast duty very pleasant and helpful. Great location with stunning views.

Our room had thick dust on the bedside cabinets, headboard, shelf above the headboard and the tables. The bathroom had no soap in the dispenser but a member of staff gave us a bar of soap when we asked, there was hair in the shower. The communal areas and the restaurant were clean and tidy. The staff were really friendly and helpful though, and the breakfast was really lovely.

Room had very outdated decor. The window would not close and was full of flies. We were moved to another room, a superior double, which was much better in terms of decor however the light area was full of dead flies.

For the price this place is excellent. You are paying the price of a hostel but you have your own room, a decent bathroom and tea making facilities. The hotel has seen better days, and if you want something swanky pay another £100 per night. Staff were helpful, room was clean, and location is spot on.

It's charming old hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff. Unfortunately our room was incredibly hot as it we had warm weather, there was no A/C, and only one window could be opened about 6 inches. My advice is to ask about A/C before you book.

Huge comfy bed with clean sheets, lots of pillows and lovely warm room with sea view, just needs a bit of love with the decor!

The reception lady was friendly, but the rest was disappointing. The room and corridor reeked of mustiness. The carpet was ancient and marked, and there were scuffs on the walls. The sides of the bath sloped down away from the shower head so water from the shower ran down them and onto the floor, soaking any clothes you happened to have put there. The tiny pillow was lumpy, and the walls were so thin it sounded like your neighbours were in the room with you. The TV was fine.

Fantastic location with awesome scenic walks to Lynmouth and valley of the rocks on the hotels doorstep. We stayed in a twin bedroom and had the most stunning views.Clean bathroom & comfy beds. The staff were friendly helpful.

We had a lovely stay here, the room was gorgeous and spacious and the view was beautiful.. The lady on reception was a delight! We would happily stay again!

A clean, functional hotel. Our room was large and had a view of the sea. I was very annoyed by a blue light on the electrics which kept me awake at night - finally in the morning I worked out it would go off if I turned the electric towel rail off. Great for our dog too

The property was an amazing big old place, full of character and in process of being updated. We had a massive room with a partial view of the sea. Staff very polite.

No hot water at all, took ages to get a fan, broken window in room so couldn’t open it up. Loud noise from rooms next door. Staff on reception just on their phone and not bothered to help. Avoid at all costs

Had problems booking in to hotel, I paid al monies but it didn’t register with the hotel that I had booked, there were no rooms available so according to them there was no booking, so I had to prove that I booked with my bank statement, after about 2 hours of trying to sort out they eventually got me a room, the excuse was that they had lost the link with yourselves.

Reception staff excellent, for the price it was really good value and should always be taken into account

The Valley is a lovely building and the furnishings are very nice . The staff are very friendly and accommodating . We have stayed before and will be staying again. It is excellent value for money.

We had a lovely stay here, the room was gorgeous and spacious and the view was beautiful.. The lady on reception was a delight! We would happily stay again!

Check in is at 3pm, but unfortunately for whatever reason that didn’t happen, after a long drive our arrival was early, but however had managed to go for a coffee to try and burn some time, but got too reception to be told our room wasn’t ready and to come back 30-40mins later, however when we returned, still our room wasn’t ready, and I think this was the situation for quite a lot of couples and small families, however the staff are really nice and polite, and I guess under staffed, when we got too our room it was a beautiful view looking out towards the sea and cliffs, modern bathroom double bed, very comfortable, but under the bed was messy, and unfortunately woke up to cold water in the shower, and the wardrobe needs and update as the vernier is peeling off if I’m being nit picky, but breakfast was really nice a big selection of breakfast options, other then the scrambled eggs which we left, which me and my partner thought smelled a little strange, but it’s a beautiful place to stay, may of just been a bad day for the staff, as it is a very big place to maintain, I really enjoyed my stay but if I’m too stay again I do think checking in time should be sooner, but understand why this could be a stretch as we was able to get into our room about an hour and 40 mins later, and with people coming from afar All we want to do is just get to our room and unwind for the rest of the day, as it can be a challenge for parking, and there isn’t many bays so be warned

It was our second stay and the reason for staying again was yhe staff and location.

Loved the hotel lounge but it was a bit too warm for us to sit there too long. We hadn't pre-booked parking at the hotel but managed to find free parking nearby for the 3 nights we stayed. We would definitely stay again.

Fantastic location. Very faded grandeur with fairly basic accommodation but this is reflected in the price so is good value for the price.

The most stunning location possible in big traditional hotel. My room was very cheap and quite small, though I peeped into some other rooms and they would definitely be worth paying a bit more. Lynton is 500 feet above Lynmouth at sea level. The cliff railway and multiple footpaths mean you can visit both. Good range of quality tourist shops, tea shops and restaurants. One bus which takes an hour+ from Barnstaple. Excellent holiday destination.

The location of the hotel was perfect for walking to the Valley of the Rocks and the coastal path. We had a room only but that suited us and the service was friendly and helpful.

Lovely old hotel with great sea views from our spacious and well decorated room. The service from staff at Reception and in the restaurant was excellent- we will definitely be back. Incredibly good value compared with other hotels in the area. We took advantage of the three course dinner which I probably wouldn't do again because the standard of food wasn't great. It was very convenient not to have to leave the hotel to eat though after a day of walking! The breakfast was very good though.

The hotel is definitely past its prime and much of what was once a beautiful hotel has been covered up or blocked off. The views are truly wonderful, and the rooms are ok. However, I can't remember when I had a worse breakfast, at any price. The eggs were actually grey in bits, smelled and were inedible.

Really enjoyed our stay. Property could do with a bit of tlc and maybe some local art on the walls. Breakfast could be improved with the addition of mushrooms, maybe fried eggs as an alternative to the scrambled egg provided and some veggie sausages/option would be nice. Staff were all friendly. Nothing to stop me coming again so overall a 4 out of 5. Parking at the hotel is very limited, chargeable and needs booking ahead but from 6pm until 10am you can park in the street overnight. Free for 2hrs max during the day but if you are a blue badge holder there are no restrictions. There’s a convenient car park close by in Cross Street off of Lee Road and a large car park at the bottom of Castle Hill but that’s a steep walk up to the hotel.

Friendly helpful staff, a warm welcome, the most amazing view from our room, quiet, peaceful, parking available, lovely breakfast. Would definitely go back. Thank you to all the staff for a fabulous short break to lovely Lynton.
