The home is a trip into yesteryear. The decor fits the theme of early 1900's. Mary, our hostess was very accomodating. Her breakfasts we not only delicious, but filling (we did not eat lunch during our 4 day stay). Robert, the owner, took the time to have several lengthy chats about the mansion, its history (including several Royal visits) as well as stories of St. John and NFLD. Only draw back was getting our luggage up to the 2nd floor. As they say, location, location, location. We we able to walk everywhere except for Signal Hill and Quidi Vidi, which were both less than 10 minutes drive. A very memorable finish to our 15 days in NFLD.

We stayed at the Ryan Mansion for 4 nights and it was a lovely stay. The beds were very comfortable, it’s close to downtown, very clean, and Mary, who wears all the hats in the hotel, was super accommodating. Her breakfasts were delicious! Upon arrival we noticed our room, which was on the 4th floor (so lots of stairs which was fine for us), was very clean but a bit dark due to a small window. We also felt the walls in our room could use a paint job to freshen it up. Parking is also a bit tricky but there is a designated spot if you need it. The common areas of the hotel are beautiful. And I can’t say enough about Mary’s breakfasts and her attention to detail. She went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. She is a sweetheart and made our stay that much more enjoyable. We felt right at home during our stay.

Nous avons adoré notre séjour de 2 nuits, c'est fabuleux de pouvoir séjourner dans un endroit du genre. La chambre était spacieuse avec des meubles pratiques pour des voyageurs. Les points négatifs: Le matelas était trop mou à mon goût, le système de bulles du bain de notre chambre (#201)n'est pas fonctionnel (si c'est important pour vous, renseignez-vous pour choisir la bonne chambre!) et on entend les voitures passer dans la rue puisque notre chambre était à l'avant (mais ça n'a pas nuit à mon sommeil). Enfin, c'est très bien situé, on peu aller au port à pied et il y avait un stationnement pour notre voiture. Un endroit charmant! Merci!

This is a bed and breakfast in a beautifully decorated, ornate, historical mansion. Don't expect the same level of service as a hotel. The bedrooms are nicely updated to today's standards, but both the inside and outside staircases require maintenance attention. The proprietor is friendly and was avaliable in the mornings to regale us with information about the mansion and the city. We enjoyed our stay.

The hotel, is more like a B&B with luxury private bathrroms. In this day and age, a rare find, exquite woodwork, art, and furniture. Can you imagine.... a fully stocked bar for guests to use with an honesty booklet for saying what you used. In case you don't look closely at the site, previous guests have been king/prince Charles, and princess Margret.

Lots of character. The lady in charge, Mary, is very efficient, friendly and a wonderful cook. Our room was on the 3rd floor. Lots of stairs to climb with or without luggage. Spacious room with 2 queen beds and modern bathroom. Not too bad walking downhill to Water St but brutal walking back. Lots of steep hills.

Mary (reception, cook and cleaning lady) was friendly and very accommodating. The room (two queen beds on the third floor) was very large, with great soaker tub for two, but the jets weren’t working due to “electrical issue”. The interior of the house appears well maintained, and rooms/bathrooms are beautifully decorated, very clean and very cozy bed/pillows. The exterior of the house is greatly in bad state - front entrance posts are rotting and house exterior needs a major paint job - not good first impression upon arrival. Inside of house is fine! Great location! Lots of hills around the house, so if you’re walking, keep that in mind as the walk back from downtown is steep!

If you want a relaxing stay in the city, then book the Ryan Mansion. Owners were knowledgeable about the history of the property, as well as St. John’s. The room was immaculate like the rest of the house and the breakfasts were copious and delicious! The hosts are so personable and friendly-super nice! We strongly recommend this inn and will be returning!

Beautiful, historic building. Rooms were well equipped, lovely and spacious. Beds and linens were very comfortable. Breakfast was yummy. Mary is a delight who gives her all to ensure a pleasant stay.

Outstanding! Newfoundland hospitality at its finest! The House, as they call it is absolutely magnificent, rooms are spacious with gorgeous bathroom, super comfy bed and nespresso coffee maker. Everything was absolutely spotless. The House oozes of history and is an experience in its own right. It’s at a great location to walk to downtown, the Harbor or to the Rooms. But what stood out the most, was the love and kindness that Robert and Mary showed us. We were welcomed like family and felt so at home there. Mary cooks beautiful and delicious breakfasts. This is a special place and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone.

We stayed at the Ryan Mansion for 4 nights and it was a lovely stay. The beds were very comfortable, it’s close to downtown, very clean, and Mary, who wears all the hats in the hotel, was super accommodating. Her breakfasts were delicious! Upon arrival we noticed our room, which was on the 4th floor (so lots of stairs which was fine for us), was very clean but a bit dark due to a small window. We also felt the walls in our room could use a paint job to freshen it up. Parking is also a bit tricky but there is a designated spot if you need it. The common areas of the hotel are beautiful. And I can’t say enough about Mary’s breakfasts and her attention to detail. She went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed. She is a sweetheart and made our stay that much more enjoyable. We felt right at home during our stay.

Nous avons adoré notre séjour de 2 nuits, c'est fabuleux de pouvoir séjourner dans un endroit du genre. La chambre était spacieuse avec des meubles pratiques pour des voyageurs. Not as advertised. Deluxe king room turned out to be an attic with a tiny window and a free standing ac unit that was to loud to leave on. The advertised bath with TV was missing the TV Also missing the advertised fridge. At best this is an overpriced B&B. Overall we paid way to much for a very unpleasant experience.

Lots of character. The lady in charge, Mary, is very efficient, friendly and a wonderful cook. Our room was on the 3rd floor. Lots of stairs to climb with or without luggage. Spacious room with 2 queen beds and modern bathroom. Not too bad walking downhill to Water St but brutal walking back. Lots of steep hills.

Outstanding! Newfoundland hospitality at its finest! The House, as they call it is absolutely magnificent, rooms are spacious with gorgeous bathroom, super comfy bed and nespresso coffee maker. Everything was absolutely spotless. The House oozes of history and is an experience in its own right. It’s at a great location to walk to downtown, the Harbor or to the Rooms. But what stood out the most, was the love and kindness that Robert and Mary showed us. We were welcomed like family and felt so at home there. Mary cooks beautiful and delicious breakfasts. This is a special place and recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone.

Ryan Mansion feels very luxurious - the building is beautiful! You have to arrange your check in with staff as the door is otherwise locked (meaning it's safe). This could be inconvenient if you are arriving at an odd time, but for us it was manageable. There was in-room air conditioning which kept us sufficiently cool. The room had a coffee maker and a beautiful soaker tub. The bed was comfortable. The plated breakfast was excellent - of note, breakfast was offered at two times which might not work for you depending on your plans for that day; however we were offered coffee to go when we could not do breakfast. It's located uphill and it's about an 8 minute walk downhill to Water Street. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We very much enjoyed our stay!

St Johns is a very fun city. So glad we stayed at Ryan Mansion -- good breakfast every morning, charming hotel and great walkable location. BUT, the real treasure is Mary who shares Newfoundland color with a smile.

This is a bed and breakfast in a beautifully decorated, ornate, historical mansion. Don't expect the same level of service as a hotel. The bedrooms are nicely updated to today's standards, but both the inside and outside staircases require maintenance attention. A few things were disappointing. It was our 26th wedding anniversary, which was communicated in the reservation and there was no recognition - no card in the room or complimentry wine or chocolates. For the price of the room - I was surprised there wasn't this extra hosptiality. Also - we were not checked on to see if we needed fresh towels or coffee replenishment for the room (we stayed there 2 nights). We did have a do not distrurb sign on the door as we didn't want the room cleaned but had to go hunting for coffee on the 2nd day and when we asked - we were directed to a supply closet on the second floor to fetch it ourselves. This is not reasonable for a boutique hotel at this price point. While the property is lovely and holds historical interest ...on it's own does not warrent the price point - the service needs to be pristine - which it was not. While our contact person was friendly - at times - I would say too casual and over shared personal details. On the second night - there were guests that were very loud until 9:30/10. Given there was no one onsight after 4pm - there was no one to manage noise levels. Overall - while the property was beautiful - it was disappointing as a lux, special occassion venue and I would not recommend that that price point.

Ryan Mansion feels very luxurious - the building is beautiful! You have to arrange your check in with staff as the door is otherwise locked (meaning it's safe). This could be inconvenient if you are arriving at an odd time, but for us it was manageable. There was in-room air conditioning which kept us sufficiently cool. The room had a coffee maker and a beautiful soaker tub. The bed was comfortable. The plated breakfast was excellent - of note, breakfast was offered at two times which might not work for you depending on your plans for that day; however we were offered coffee to go when we could not do breakfast. It's located uphill and it's about an 8 minute walk downhill to Water Street. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We very much enjoyed our stay!

The home is a trip into yesteryear. The decor fits the theme of early 1900's. Mary, our hostess was very accomodating. Her breakfasts we not only delicious, but filling (we did not eat lunch during our 4 day stay). Robert, the owner, took the time to have several lengthy chats about the mansion, its history (including several Royal visits) as well as stories of St. John and NFLD. Only draw back was getting our luggage up to the 2nd floor. As they say, location, location, location. We we able to walk everywhere except for Signal Hill and Quidi Vidi, which were both less than 10 minutes drive. A very memorable finish to our 15 days in NFLD.

St Johns is a very fun city. So glad we stayed at Ryan Mansion -- good breakfast every morning, charming hotel and great walkable location. BUT, the real treasure is Mary who shares Newfoundland color with a smile.

Outstanding! Newfoundland hospitality at its finest! The House, as they call it is absolutely magnificent, rooms are spacious with gorgeous bathroom, super comfy bed and nespresso coffee maker. Everything was absolutely spotless. The House oozes of history and is an experience in its own right. It’s at a great location to walk to downtown, the Harbor or to the Rooms. But what stood out the most, was the love and kindness that Robert and Mary showed us. We were welcomed like family and felt so at home there. Mary cooks beautiful and delicious breakfasts. Pervasive smell of mothballs in our room, on the 3rd floor up a narrow staircase, (as there is only one other set of occupants were there no bedrooms lower down?), Most of the property has no A/C so very hot and stuffy. Our room did have A/C but a very noisy unit out of the window. Pillow cases were creased and looked like they had been slept on, black hair in the sink. Breakfast was awful. Had to be at a fixed time chosen the night before (even though there was only one other set of guests). No choice just whatever strange food was made that morning. Just wanted a normal breakfast we are not fussy. Managed to find a great bakery round the corner where we ate breakfast. Overall very shabby- peeling paint, scratched woodwork and cracked plaster. It is massively overpriced for the experience. Nice art, books, and tranquil reception rooms. I feel like I want to refund when I look at where I could have stayed for half the price.

We completed enjoyed our stay at Ryan Mansion. Mary looked after our every need; she made dinner reservations for us, served a delicious and varied breakfast and entertained us with stories. Our room was incredibly comfortable and supplied all the comforts. The Mansion was well located for a walk to the waterfront although a steep walk home. Haha! Highly recommend. The Mansion is well cared for and beautifully decorated.

The B&B is a very impressive Mansion. The interior exemplifies what a rich house was like in the early 1900’s. The exterior was becoming decrepit and needed much maintenance. Mary, the lone custodian, tries very hard to keep guests happy. She served us well as only 2 rooms were occupied. She would not be able to do so if the B&B is fully occupied.

This is an exceptionally beautiful boutique hotel that feels rich in history and luxury. Without a doubt, the heart of the Ryan Mansion is Mary, who was welcoming, attentive, and prepared delicious breakfasts each morning. Ryan Mansion is well located, which lent itself to travelling by foot to Water Street, Signal Hill and Quidi Vidi. We would highly reccomend Ryan Mansion and look forward to returning again.
