The hotel was pretty good, my room was ‘cute’. I would stay there again but would also be happy to check out other options. I loved being right on the beach. However, the pool was small and literally right at the restaurant so it was hard to relax and enjoy the pool. The front desk staff were great but a couple of the wait staff could use a little improvement. The food was decent but really large portions. It is also an easy 10-15 minute bike ride into Puerto Viejo

The property was clean and the staff was very friendly and helpful. It was close to the beach and they had chairs and food service on the beach. The only thing that wasn't great was the mattress. It was close to perfect.

The staff were wonderful to is- Thanks to Leo, Laura, Oscar, Denise, Diana, and many more! Massage with Michelle was also great and so reasonable. The property has a guard that is there in the evening and helped us get on our way with fresh fruit and banana bread the kitchen prepared for us for our early departure at 5 am! Was close to Puerto Viejo’s busy area but nice to be away from the hustle of that. Enjoyed being able to retire to a quiet space with a restaurant that included breakfast and options for lunch and dinner too!

This laid back beach resort is ideal for 'get away from it all' holiday makers. The fabulous black sand beach is just at the end of the well maintained gardens. and it stretches for miles. The room we stayed in was slightly small. (as was the pool) - but Air con worked great and we needed it. Shower was powerful. I'd go for the larger suite next time. Try the tenderloin steak - one of the best I've had. Cocktails to die for. - and service was excellent.

Incredible stay, the staff are amazing and the hotel is wonderful. Food is excellent as well and more affordable then many of the local restaurants (and just as tasty). We had an ocean view room, and it was amazing that we were a short 10 second walk from the beach!

Wow - what a fantastic experience we had!! This hotel is so gorgeous and lovely - each room is a joy. We had an upper floor room with an open air balcony overlooking the ocean, and a ground floor room with a massive bath tub! We ate many meals at the wonderful hotel restaurant. The black sand beach was amazing - the water clear warm and gentle. A great experience!!

The location on playa negra is amazing, but it was the staff that really made Banana Azul shine! Genesis, Laura, and Oscar, and the rest of the crew were always happy to help us, and the deep tissue beach massage from Michelle was perfect! We would certainly return to Banana Azul!

Es un hotel muy caribeño, la habitación no tenia AC , sin embargo dada la lluvia estuvo fresca. El mar tiene muchas olas y la arena es oscura, contrarios a lo Que esperaba en el caribe. Es bastante húmedo y tiene mucha vegetación en el hotel y sus alrededores. La Pisicina es muy muy pequeña. La gente es muy amable y la comida rica. Los cocktails no tanto.

Amazing stay. I traveled with 2 other young women (ages 21,21,20) and we felt incredibly safe the entire time. We ended up staying in the banana house, which is actually a seperate villa across a little road from the main part of the hotel, however it was gated, and this gate could be locked. The apartment itself was also gorgeous. The property is one of the few at this price range with a connecting beach, being on playa negra. It is around a 5 minute ride (15 minute walk) from puerto viejo city center. There is a market at the hotel that sells groceries and cheaper lunch meals. Furthermore down the street there is a soda (which is a “hometown” restaurant in costa rica) which offers cheaper food as puerto viejo and costa rica is a bit expensive. Included breakfast is AMAZING. You have multiple options plus included coffee and a daily juice. We will be back!! Not to mention the staff is amazing, particularly Diana was very helpful. This place is truly a gem and I would recommend it 10x over.

First, we have visited Banana Azul multiple times and enjoyed our previous stays. This visit we stayed 5-nights in Villa 1 and were very disappointed in the room. The downstairs and porch ceiling fans did not work and after reporting the issue multiple times, no one arrived to ever take a look. This made the downstairs unusable because of the heat. The exterior door is a security issue and does not lock properly to the outside world. Staff said they would "grease the door" but no one arrive to repair. There is a extreme heat source radiating from the kitchen floor that is hot to the touch and foul smells from the kitchen sink. Again, we reported the issues with no response. If you're looking to cook, look elsewhere. There is an electric stove but zero pans or cooking tools in the villa. Our neighbor in the next villa stepped on a deck plank that broke through and was injured in the fall; he was offered a bottle of wine for the injury. There were also balls of hair around the outdoor shower. The property has changed since our last visit and we won't be retuning.

We booked for 1 week, ended up leaving after 1 nite! It was that bad. Dirty, dingy, worn down, small, out dated, bugs everywhere, no screens on windows, holes in mosquito net. Avoid at all costs!

The hotel was definitely not what I expected. The room was very small with a king bed and a twin close by. This made it very difficult to navigate the room. I booked for 3 people. There is no closet space in the room which means our bags also had to be on the floor next to the beds. Due to the rain, the room was very moist and that made our towels smell like mildew. I asked to switch the towels and the house keeper only switched out one. Lastly, the staff in the breakfast area was really friendly and the food was pretty good. Oh and I forgot to mention, this hotel is not adult only. There were children on the resort, eating in the breakfast area, etc. They were well behaved, but one of the reasons why I chose this hotel was because it was advertised as Adult only.

The Howler Room is so nice with an ocean/beach view and large deck. Unfortunately, the beautiful experience was tempered by the non-working TV, non-working Fan and finding someone else’s dirty socks and underware beside the apartment refrigerator. Not what I expect at this price point!

I loved this property..oceanfront, comfortable clean, cabana, grounds were well kept, well landscaped, beautiful flowers, trees, fauna, staff was courteous, professional and well trained, this was the best place I stayed so far in Costa Rica

I’ve debated whether to review this property but decided it might help others. I booked it because it is right on the beach and those places are scarce in CR. And that was great. Steps to a beach with chairs and loungers and service from the hotel for drinks and food. The restaurant was good and the people were generally nice. I got a massage and it was great. But the room was awful. I was in red frog. It was dank and dark and smelled musty, towels sometimes smelled mildewy. I chose an air conditioned room on purpose thinking it would mean a well-sealed room without mosquitos - and AC. But there were gaps under doors so mosquitos could get in. There was a hole in a window pane that they covered after i asked them to - they hadn’t noticed it. There was a mosquito net but it was open down one side so sorta useless. The bathroom was not included in the a/c. The room was right next to road with very noisy truck traffic. There was apparently a sewer issue because there was sometimes a terrible smell. I spent the first evening looking for other places to stay but sucked it up because I was so happy about the beach and would spend little time in the room anyway. Just be aware that the place isn’t as nice as the photos imply - it’s like a musty lake cabin.

The bathroom is open air along the top 18 inches to the main staircase 😳! The holler suite was very rustic with no place to put our suitcases, we had to keep them on the patio closed up! Our view and patio was very nice. The room very very very small with no way to keep mosquitoes out! Location was good staff was nice

We were genuinely sad we only had one night to stay at Banana Azul! Check in was quick and efficient and friendly. The fresh coconut was a lovely treat. The Howler Suite was charming and the view magical. The food in the restaurant was delicious. I highly recommend Banana Azul if you want an authentic Costa Rica experience that’s right on the Playa Negra beach. I’ll definitely be returning.

Our room was wonderful (Howler Suite). Grounds were beautiful and having the beach to enjoy made this an exceptional value. Staff was absolutely lovely.

Not insulated. Could hear everything going on in next room. Security did nothing when i asked because i had to be up early for a flight. Waited a very long time for drinks. 10 to 15 minutes after ordering.

Loved property itself and location/rooms "floorplans", but for the price, expect a few more things to work smoothly. For example, the outside door was broken, and when "fixed", became even more unusable - this was not fixed entire trip. The coffee is not in the room but outside - never enough, always cold, and impossible to pump. The door has no handle on inside and doesn't stay closed unless you lock. The pillows and mattress are old and worn out - had better in a budget hotel in CR. The mosquito net doesn't stay on/close, so purely decorative. The shower switch doesn't work so you have very little water coming from the top. The electricity goes out frequently, and with no power back up, the fan switches off - given no AC, it is quite uncomfortable to sleep at night and gets very hot. Finally, and worst offense (among others), the internet in the room NEVER worked - had to go outside to work or work in the lobby of hotel. Oh, and the outside lights were not possible to switch on/off - only staff could do it. One night it was pitch dark, I texted and even told one of the employees about it, but nothing was done until I asked again the next day. There were positive things (and many), but the issues above and then some, make you upset as for the daily price charged, especially for the area, I expect far better.

Finally, and worst offense (among others), the internet in the room NEVER worked - had to go outside to work or work in the lobby of hotel. Oh, and the outside lights were not possible to switch on/off - only staff could do it. One night it was pitch dark, I texted and even told one of the employees about it, but nothing was done until I asked again the next day. There were positive things (and many), but the issues above and then some, make you upset as for the daily price charged, especially for the area, I expect far better.

I’ve debated whether to review this property but decided it might help others. I booked it because it is right on the beach and those places are scarce in CR. And that was great. Steps to a beach with chairs and loungers and service from the hotel for drinks and food. The restaurant was good and the people were generally nice. I got a massage and it was great. But the room was awful. I was in red frog. It was dank and dark and smelled musty, towels sometimes smelled mildewy. I chose an air conditioned room on purpose thinking it would mean a well-sealed room without mosquitos - and AC. But there were gaps under doors so mosquitos could get in. There was a hole in a window pane that they covered after i asked them to - they hadn’t noticed it. There was a mosquito net but it was open down one side so sorta useless. The bathroom was not included in the a/c. The room was right next to road with very noisy truck traffic. There was apparently a sewer issue because there was sometimes a terrible smell. I spent the first evening looking for other places to stay but sucked it up because I was so happy about the beach and would spend little time in the room anyway. Just be aware that the place isn’t as nice as the photos imply - it’s like a musty lake cabin.

I wanted to have high hopes for this property but was left disappointed. I will say, The property is pretty, clean and they do offer fun activities/ menu changes and nice live music while you enjoy dinner /beverages. The beach access is also very beautiful. The staff is friendly but we found that they were inattentive, and forgetful. The first room we had, smelled so heavy of chlorine it irritated my skin. The outside lights on the deck shined all night through the curtains directly into our bedroom and you couldn’t turn them off. This made it almost impossible to sleep as well as The fan remote stopped working. The ceiling fan is the only source of cooling in the room. After texting and waiting for a response for new batteries, my husband had to go down to the front desk in the middle of the night. The Security officer assisted. There was also a bird living in the outside corner that moved/pecked all night long. My husband had upgraded to a frog suite the next night. It was very pretty but again the whole night long a non stop knocking came from the upstairs room deck which left me with another sleepless night.

The staff were wonderful to is- Thanks to Leo, Laura, Oscar, Denise, Diana, and many more! Massage with Michelle was also great and so reasonable. The property has a guard that is there in the evening and helped us get on our way with fresh fruit and banana bread the kitchen prepared for us for our early departure at 5 am! Was close to Puerto Viejo’s busy area but nice to be away from the hustle of that. Enjoyed being able to retire to a quiet space with a restaurant that included breakfast and options for lunch and dinner too!

First, we have visited Banana Azul multiple times and enjoyed our previous stays. This visit we stayed 5-nights in Villa 1 and were very disappointed in the room. The downstairs and porch ceiling fans did not work and after reporting the issue multiple times, no one arrived to ever take a look. This made the downstairs unusable because of the heat. The exterior door is a security issue and does not lock properly to the outside world. Staff said they would "grease the door" but no one arrive to repair. There is a extreme heat source radiating from the kitchen floor that is hot to the touch and foul smells from the kitchen sink. Again, we reported the issues with no response. If you're looking to cook, look elsewhere. There is an electric stove but zero pans or cooking tools in the villa. Our neighbor in the next villa stepped on a deck plank that broke through and was injured in the fall; he was offered a bottle of wine for the injury. There were also balls of hair around the outdoor shower. The property has changed since our last visit and we won't be retuning.

The location on playa negra is amazing, but it was the staff that really made Banana Azul shine! Genesis, Laura, and Oscar, and the rest of the crew were always happy to help us, and the deep tissue beach massage from Michelle was perfect! We would certainly return to Banana Azul!

Amazing stay. I traveled with 2 other young women (ages 21,21,20) and we felt incredibly safe the entire time. We ended up staying in the banana house, which is actually a seperate villa across a little road from the main part of the hotel, however it was gated, and this gate could be locked. The apartment itself was also gorgeous. The property is one of the few at this price range with a connecting beach, being on playa negra. It is around a 5 minute ride (15 minute walk) from puerto viejo city center. There is a market at the hotel that sells groceries and cheaper lunch meals. Furthermore down the street there is a soda (which is a “hometown” restaurant in costa rica) which offers cheaper food as puerto viejo and costa rica is a bit expensive. Included breakfast is AMAZING. You have multiple options plus included coffee and a daily juice. We will be back!! Not to mention the staff is amazing, particularly Diana was very helpful. This place is truly a gem and I would recommend it 10x over.

The place itself is very nice with a lovely main area and garden. The service in general also was okay - sometimes a little absentminded , though. What really was pretty unpleasant was that a couple of things were not explained in the beginning, We were given only very reluctantly a hair drier, there was no mirror in the bath room and there were not able to organize one during 8 days, we were given dirty bed sheets and most annoyingly my credit card was charged with a reasonable amount after checkout without any explanation - there was no reaction to my inquiries , no reason given . Nothing! This kind of destroyed the whole experience.

It was an overall great stay. The beach is so close in comparison to huge resorts. The food is great but unfortunately the kitchen does close early. You need to find places to eat or stock up on snacks if it’s after 9:00. The staff is great!!!!! Make sure to check if your room has air conditioning. Ours did not have one but our stay was in October which is considered their winter. It rained at night which helped keep the room cool. I can’t imagine staying there without an air conditioner in the summer time. It would truly be miserable. Other than that it is a great place with a wonderful staff! I will definitely go back.

This laid back beach resort is ideal for 'get away from it all' holiday makers. The fabulous black sand beach is just at the end of the well maintained gardens. and it stretches for miles. The room we stayed in was slightly small. (as was the pool) - but Air con worked great and we needed it. Shower was powerful. I'd go for the larger suite next time. Try the tenderloin steak - one of the best I've had. Cocktails to die for. - and service was excellent.

Wow - what a fantastic experience we had!! This hotel is so gorgeous and lovely - each room is a joy. We had an upper floor room with an open air balcony overlooking the ocean, and a ground floor room with a massive bath tub! We ate many meals at the wonderful hotel restaurant. The black sand beach was amazing - the water clear warm and gentle. A great experience!!

Great location right on the beach. Not Adults only! They were many young children during our stay which was a bit disappointing. Prices also seemed a bit high for food and drinks for what you got. We were better off eating out. Overall a nice stay a great beach.

Amazing stay. I traveled with 2 other young women (ages 21,21,20) and we felt incredibly safe the entire time. We ended up staying in the banana house, which is actually a seperate villa across a little road from the main part of the hotel, however it was gated, and this gate could be locked. The apartment itself was also gorgeous. The property is one of the few at this price range with a connecting beach, being on playa negra. It is around a 5 minute ride (15 minute walk) from puerto viejo city center. There is a market at the hotel that sells groceries and cheaper lunch meals. Furthermore down the street there is a soda (which is a “hometown” restaurant in costa rica) which offers cheaper food as puerto viejo and costa rica is a bit expensive. The hotel was conveniently located close to a beautiful, private beach. The staff was friendly but dining staff was very very slow. Wifi is very weak here. Nice rooms but without air conditioning. Make sure to bring earplugs for the road noise and birds.

What a cozy place!!! Fantastic location right on the beach. Here you really get the Caribbean feeling. The rooms were clean and nice and the staff were super nice. about 20min walk to town or 6-7 dollars by taxi/tuc-tuc. We were only supposed to stay there for 3 nights, but stayed 5 nights because we had such a nice time.

For what was supposed to be a 4 star luxury resort, this fell far short, especially the room. The Tropical room had an "outdoor" area that was totally enclosed and unbearably hot. Also on the enclosed area 1/2 the lights did not work, the exhaust fans made a loud screeching sound and one was not working. The room had a hole rotten through the floorboard on the side of the bed that a plant was set over that was then in the way. There was a water leak from the ceiling off to the side of the room that was hopefully from the A/C unit, not the audible plumbing above. The A/C could keep the room not hot, but that was it and it rattled and creaked. Dead cockroaches appeared on 2 out of three mornings. The room also had a sickly sweet smell of some air freshener which was awful. We could not switch rooms since all were full or had broken a/c and were too hot to deal with. The pool was missing tiles and had green algae that billowed when you swam. The service in the restaurant was amazingly slow, 20 minutes for a drink was normal and every bartender made them differently. The staff were nice but generally had no idea what the specials were. Example, we got free glasses of wine coupons. After we got the glasses we were told that the coupon was only for the house wine, which was not on the menu so how would we know to order it. The beach is lovely and the hotel is nice, just needs updating, cleaning and a better training for the staff. The tropical rooms are just unpleasant,

From the moment i arrived at the property i felt a peaceful energy. the aesthetic of the hotel was my favorite, the beach was beautiful, loved the room. I was solo traveling, but didn’t feel alone at all. Staff made me feel at home. They truly outdid themselves very attentive and willing to help in anything you need! Ketzy at the reception so kind and helpful going out of her way! I recommend getting a massage by Michelle she was amazing worth every penny. At the bar and grill food was delicious and drinks. Brixie so sweet and attentive took great care of me and all the waitresses . I loved my stay there it was everything I needed I 100% recommend this hotel. And I would totally come back! It fits the puerto viejo pura vida vibe! Thank you hotel banana azul for an amazing time!

10/10 no complaints. The staff was friendly and accommodating. They clean the room extremely thoroughly daily, the FOOD and DRINKS were both phenomenal. You can tell their ingredients are fresh and the chefs make the food with love. I’ve honestly never had such a perfect experience. Hotel banana azul was the perfect welcome I needed for my first time in Costa Rica. Thank you to Banana Azul team!
