Ocean View Hotel

Loved the sea view, but not a lot of parking spaces. Witnessed traffic wardens checking cars in surrounding streets at 22.30 hrs, so be careful!

Awful. Paid £340 for two nights. Business clearly has no money. We were the only guests there! Pool closed, no sunloungers, no toiletries in bathroom, sweltering hot room - no fans. Mentioned to the owner about being disappointed the pool was closed and he pointed at the sea and joked “there’s your pool” Left a day early and expected (at the very least) two breakfasts and two dinners that we’d paid for to be refunded but after chasing three times was just ignored. Only redeeming factor was that the reception and restaurant staff were very nice.

Could not order evening meal on first night as they only take orders in the morning. hadcto walk to Shanklin village 10 mins . hot lucky to find table availability. Good location. Staff friendly to guests BUT rumours staff of not being pad so they left leading them short staffed! Great free swimming pool

Lovely spot with sea view, rooms need updating, very tired. Bar not open when we were there and no entertainment offered. Nice swimming pool but such a long trek to it with lots of stairs not suitable for everyone. Otherwise as advertised.

We had a lovely time at the Ocean View. The hotel is in a great location and we will use again in the future. All of the staff were friendly and breakfast was very good. Overall, we liked it, however a couple of points that would improve this hotel are: The bar/lounge area needs some nice chairs and tables which would really enhance the bar area. The area also needs subtle lighting. AS for the patio are, benches are no good for elderly people, so I think this needs to be looked at. Just a few points which taken on board will improve the Ocean View. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and will return hopefully later in the year

Hotel was in a good location. I booked six single rooms for a cycling weekend, all the rooms were comfy, the hotel bar was friendly, and the cooked breakfast for next day was excellent. I’d recommend the hotel.

It did not match photographs online. The carpet was dirty and very worn, the paint on all the furniture was chipped and they didn't bother to put on a valance sheet on the singe bed; the base box was visable. The beds and pillows were very uncomfortable. I left with a severe back and neck pain. The room was cleaned before I arrived and housekeeping attended after the first night. However, they did not attend after the second night, the only thing that was cleaned was the bin. The balcony was dirty on my arrival and I had to clean the chairs myself to sit. The railing of the balcony was unsecured and thwre were workmen next to my windows, so I did not feel comfortable opening the drapes all the way during the day. Breakfast was a stressful process, the wait to be seated and served was very long, food arrived cold. Some of the cups on yhe table were not clean and I could not drink tea or coffee at all on the first day. I expalined to the staff on the first day that I was not comfortable and would like a room change and was ignored. Overall the hotel seems to be in a state of disrepair. I am very disheartened I try to avoid chain hotels when I can and support local but this will make me rethink that.

The hotel is in poor condition. The photos on the website are very misleading. The room had poor decor. Communal areas need updating and cleaning. However, staff were friendly and helpful.

Swimming pool looked lovely on photos but was filthy the place itself is being done up but the room was dirty with cockroach in the room

Bed linens and towels were fresh, clean, and comfy. However, the shower had hairs in it, and there were two dropped pens on the floor under the desk - suggesting that it doesn't get cleaned thoroughly... The bathroom was good but bedroom fixtures could use updating. Staff were wonderful, location is great. I guess you get what you pay for, it was cheaper than most other places, overall was good and would consider staying again.

Breakfast was only from 8.30am to 9.30am which didn't help if going to work, and we asked for dinner one night at 7.15pm and were told no, as you had to book early for the chef? Overall very disappointed particularly when paying nearly £300 for 2 nights.

Absolutely wonderful stay. Very clean room, just needed to request extra pillows, which were provided and made sleeping much easier. Quiet room, wonderful sounds of seagulls in the morning. A lovely view of the sea through one window! So pleasant, and a great location!

Stayed here for a night booked online really late at night and was greeted at reception by a very pleasant and helpful young lad whose manners and customer service were second to none (very good), the hotel lobby, hallways and room is exceptionally clean to a high standard and the room was to a high standard. Will be coming back for a longer stay next time and would certainly recommend to friends and family or people in general 👍

The property was clean, but for the cost of as not great value for money. Room was hot - no air conditioning. Breakfast selection of hot food good, but no fresh fruit, pastries, etc. limited and a place to sleep…

One of the bottom three worst places we have ever stayed. We booked two nights, in an ocean view family room, and the view is the only thing that can't be faulted. The moment you leave reception the tiredness of the hotel hits you, dirty carpets, 1970s decor, stair edging loose. Upon reaching the room, the handle half comes off in my hand. The room is two single beds either side of a double bed. One wall is old built in wardrobes with a bashed up desk in the middle, very 70s/80s. It's incredibly stuffy. Not paradise but we could live with this for 2 nights. But then night time .... The mattress' are covered with pebbles, so it would seem, not nice. The walls/ceilings/floors paper thin and we are kept awake by other occupant's late night drinking and other "night time activities". And it's still so stuffy!! We didn't risk breakfast, the restaurant showed no signs of being open anyway, although we were advised it would be. We left after one night, booking up a night in a hotel round the corner (which was lovely) and upon clearing our stuff found a former occupant's dirty sock and a cap. We informed reception of everything and the staff member on duty was very apologetic and gave us a comment form we filled in. The manager, not so. He grumbled something about "oh we could of moved you" (yeah let's up and move a family at 2am) then scurried off somewhere leaving the receptionist to handle it. No offer of a refund of the second night we didn't stay.

On arrival to the hotel it was a pretty foyer we were dealt with quickly but not personally ie how are you today how far have you come,our bedroom was dated but the veiws were amazing,we were half board food was above average and presentation was good service was good but no one really in charge of a young team so no consistency we were also segregated from the other guests which was very noticeable it was very apparent the the hotel has been take oven recently and there were different owns to parts of the business with in the hotel which didn't gel together for a full experience of been on holiday and being look after but they were very conscientious in there areas there was alot of work going on but it didn't interfere with us using all amenities and l believe it will be lovely when it is finished , on day of check out l request my breakfast early 8.am to enable me to make my travel home ,bus ferry,train but the reception could grant this and didn't seem to want to then on check out it was nonexistent just told to leave key on the desk ,so on whole there was so great thing but also something to think about l wish you great success

Hotel relies on coach holidays which is not always conducive for independent travellers. Bedroom roomy but bed a bit lumpy and small. Most hotels of this supposed standard would be looking at minimum 5ft bed not 4ft 6

Well, where to start? Please bare in mind this room is in a range of £160-£170 gbp per night... Let's point out the positives first. Positives: Large room, stunning view, great location, free parking, clean overall and nice members of staff. That's about it! Negatives: 1.Very noisy, you can hear people talking behind the wall. 2. Hotel itself have a hospital feel, it feels like it was converted into hotel rooms, but all very clinical. 3. No ventilation whatsoever, no air-conditioning, very hot in the rooms, so you will have to sleep with open windows (not enough oxygen even with all windows open) 4. No shower products provided (no shampoo, no shower gel) For £160 gbp per night it's unacceptable. 5. No fridge, so any drinks in this room will get very warm 6. No proper coffee in the whole hotel! You will get a sachet on instant coffee and a kettle (shocking for the asking price) 7. Very late check in, you won't be able to get your room until 3pm, it's a half of the day gone! and very early check out, you will have to leave at 10am, straight after your breakfast. Any hotel at this price range will be 2pm check-in and 12 afternoon check-out with optional later check-out. 8. No hangers anywhere in the bathroom, your clothes on a floor. 9. Very poor breakfast. One item each, barely enough for a child to eat! No proper coffee, instant terrible quality coffee - sorry it's undrinkable! Won't stay there again. Only if no options available, maximum 1 night stay hotel.

I paid for sea view room and I was accommodated in a small, dark room at the back of the hotel. The receptionist told me, that it happens and there is nothing to do about it.

I have never been to such a horrible room. The old, damp, torn carpet and the furniture—oh my god—look like they were collected from a street dump. The hotel needs serious renovation; it’s not good value for money for a room to stay in. Breakfast felt like a queue for some charity food supply, with very limited time. Flies around and dirty plates. We felt so sophisticated inside room have to sleep opening balcony door in fear. Staffs are helpful, they gave their best to make us happy but property they can’t do anything unless maintained and provided quality fixtures fittings. I believe because of staffs efforts this property is holding its strength otherwise it would have been grounded. My wife was very upset I chose this property from Expedia looking at photos which are different from reality.

Unfortunately for Ocean View, we are well travelled and had just spent an amazing couple of days at the similarly starred/priced Luccombe Hall. What a contrast. OV's reception of us when we arrived early was disastrous (unprecedented for both me and my wife). The hotel is extremely tired, albeit freshly painted and generally clean. The breakfast was fine, being average. The indoor pool is very good and there is a decent ping pong table and small table football (and indoor bowls which we didn't visit). The view from our sea view room was half of the side of other rooms and overlooked the roof of the pool. The owner told us that "most hotels* do not allow food in rooms" and confiscated our pizza, giving it back to us the next day from the fridge. Repeat, our food was confiscated by the owner because hotels generally*, and OV in particular, don't allow food in rooms. *I wonder if room service ever existed anywhere, for example... On the one hand places like OV shoukd be downgraded to 2 star, but this woukd likely ruin them. On the other, they do service a market of less discerning and older coach parties, and probably quite well, so presumably is important for Shanklin. However, for most well travelled people in the mid-market, this is far from a 3 star experience.

I stayed here last minute as my family were visiting IOW. I am disabled but travel by motorcycle and hobble about with a stick. Sarah the reception lady who is wonderful arranged for me to park my motorcycle on the terrace via the disability ramp so it was dry and out of the main car park. I could even keep an eye on it from my room if needed. The hotel is a little tired in places but this is more than made up for by the wonderful staff. My room and bathroom were really nice, spacious and clean. I would definitely stay here again, in fact it would be my first choice on the IOW simply because of my parking arrangements and the fantastic staff who made my stay brilliant.

Great sea views, staff very polite, friendly and helpful. Easy access to beach, pubs and restaurants in Shanklin.

A lovely view from the room and so convenient for the cliff lift to get down to the beach and beachfront entertainment and food. Upon check in we were greeted warmly. Strange that there were no lamps in the room when we entered but reception provided us with a lamp for each bedside table in a short time. Only 2 mugs provided for a 3 people stay and biscuits and toiletries were not topped up throughout our stay. However that said, the food at breakfast and for the evening meal was excellent. Good choices for both main and dessert. The seagulls were rather bold pinching food off the terrace table! Easy walk to catch bus to the needles and wildlife sanctuary. 10 minute walk to Shanklin chine.

The Ocean View's strongest features is its location, high above the beach but close to the lift. The downside is that it primarily caters to tour groups, leaving the solo traveler a bit confused at times.

Ocean view and walking on the beachfront was amazing. Good value for money. Will recommend to everyone

We stayed at the hotel for a week. The breakfast is served by a member of staff, who takes your order. You need to request extra toast, etc, or you will only receive 1/2 a slice of toast with your meal. The hotel doesn't do lunch, as they cater for coach loads of people, who are out during the day. If you wish to eat an evening meal at the hotel, it needs to ordered at breakfast from a limited menu. The evening meal is not good value. Our hotel room was serviceable, but has not been updated since the 1970's. The hotel is been modernised, and there are room that look lovely, however ours was very dated. The staff were all very helpful and polite. The location of the hotel is fabulous, with sea views from our balcony. There is a lift to take you down to the sea front, with good restaurants. The main town / old town / station and Shanklin Chine are all within 10 minutes walk, so a car is not needed.

The staff were excellent, however, they are very short staffed at present. There were issues with housekeeping due to the shortages. When we did ask for asistance the staff did their very best to help. Meals have to be ordered the previous day, which meant we were unable to get dinner for the evening we arrived. We had breakfast which mostly was fresh and delicious. It is generally geared towards coach parties, rather than individual/family holiday makers There is some evening entertainment but the number of nights this is available is dictated by the coach companies as they pay for it. Overall, the hotel meets basic needs with pleasant and friendly staff. We are aware that new management took over in February and they cofirmed all the issues are being addressed and will be resolved in time.
