What an amazing place to stay. Larnarch Castle is beautiful all around. If you have a chance to stay there he night- you’ll mainly have the grounds to yourself when all the tourist have left. The dinner inside the castle and the breakfast inside the old horse stable were a nice treat. Loved our stay and the views are incredible.

The environment was very pleasant and the castle was lovely. However, what we didn't realize was that we had to share showers and bathrooms with up to 7 other units, so that meant leaving the room at night to go to the restroom, and taking a shower and rushing back to your room; overall very unpleasant.

We stayed in the lodge on the castle grounds. We checked in around 6pm, so the castle was closed, but we were allowed to tour the grounds, which were beautiful. Our room was nice. We had a wonderful breakfast in the morning, with a nice cold buffet and our choice of a hot meal. We got to tour the house before the crowds came (two buses pulled up as we were leaving). It was a lovely stay.

Do not book here unless you are okay driving up turny narrow roads with no guardrail. It is terrifying. Also there is very little parking around the lodge and stables. The view from our room was incredible...it was the best thing about our stay.

Enjoyable Experience! Pretty good value, a nights stay, breakfast for 2, access to the castle & grounds/gardens. The Stables were clean and tidy, excellent breakfast was included - buffet style with cooked breakfast options - full English cooked breakfast, pancakes or Eggs Benedict. The room was small but cosy with good heating, the room was very clean, it had a small jug for hot drinks, a couple of mugs and glasses, a small iron and ironing board. Basic laundry facilities available. A small fridge is provided upstairs in the stables for communal use. The bathrooms were also clean but quite dated and potentially quite cold in autumn/winter months. The shower was a little on the dingy side, which is my only real complaint, it was clean but had obviously mold, could benefit from being up graded. I believe they have a Trust the Chief dinner arrangement (at an additional cost) where you can have dinner in the castle, and there's a cafe in the ballroom. You are able to leave the grounds any time you wish and are given a code to access the gates. Parking can be a bit of a squeeze for the stables and lodge with not many spots available. Definitely not a wheelchair accessible place to stay. Overall it was good value for money and an enjoyable once in a lifetime opportunity to stay and enjoy the atmosphere of Larnach's Castle after dark.

We stayed one night in the "Stables" accommodation. The atmosphere and novelty of this type of stay was our reason for doing so. Overall our stay was great with the buffet breakfast being the highlight. For the price (which included visit inside the castle and the buffet breakfast) seemed good to us. We are NOT the type of people who usually chooses sharing bathroom facilities with strangers. However, it was "off season" so there was only one other couple staying in the lodge besides our family party of 5 therefore, it wasn't a problem. We were pleased that the room and bathroom facilities were very clean and tidy. The room was sufficiently warm for end of May. Our mattress on the bed was not very firm and comfortable but tolerable. Staying at the castle overnight was convenient for travelling to the end of the peninsula to view the penguins at dusk and to eat dinner in Portabello.

Very impressive entrance. The whole castle vibe starts at the entrance iron gates and the sentry box. Narrow country laneway winds around the castle to the Lodge accommodation passing car parks and gardens. Be mindful of buses and cars coming the other way. Met by reception as we tried to locate a car park space near the Lodge. Low key reception check in space. Friendly reception manager provided all the information we needed to know accompanied with a map and the information that had been spoken in print, then showed us to our room. First impact, the outstanding natural imagery outside the large window. Period style furnishings and modern bathroom with heated flooring (love the tartan wallpaper, on top half of wall, adds to the overall effect) Dined in the castle with a guided tour after our meal. A very special experience.

Lodge consisted of rooms in converted stable or separate lodge. Our room had incredible views. Room was charming and we opted for the dinner at the castle which was super fun and excellent. The host is incredible and she makes the dining experience a joy and interesting. She gave a quick tour and her entertaining stories about the castle were fun! You also get free entry into the lovely castle in the morning to explore more and the gardens were beautiful. Breakfast in the stable was excellent

Amazing. We had en-suite queen rooms, which were clean, comfortable and beautifully and individually decorated. Tea and coffee maker and a small fridge were appreciated. The views were stunning and we loved sitting on the balcony listening to the birds. Breakfast was excellent. We spent a lovely morning wandering the gardens.

Very cute to stay at the castle. The service was exceptional. It was very clean with comfortable bed. It is an older property with restoration work happening but this is all expected. The breakfast options are excellent and very delicious.

Staying in the Stables at Larnach Castle was unique and wonderful. First, you have access to the beautiful gardens and the castle itself included with your stay. It was great to walk through the gardens any time we wished. The castle was also fun and interesting. Second, the rooms themselves were clean and comfortable. We didn\'t find "sharing" a bathroom to be a problem. I seldom even saw another guest as everyone was so considerate of each other. Finally, the included breakfast was always delicious, and the staff was great. We decided to book one dinner in the castle. It was also great and an opportunity to meet people from throughout the world. SPECIAL does not say enough about this place.

Such a shame that toxic new carpeting was recently installed. Had a migraine all night and felt nauseated from the stench of the new carpet. Ugly grey and no way to ventilate the room. Couldn’t sleep. Also could not believe that smoking is allowed “anywhere outside” so it’s like playing Russian Roulette suffering from pulmonary and cardiovascular rape. Surely they could make the whole property non-smoking. The fire danger alone would make that worthwhile endeavor. The gardens are beautiful, but the castle was overcrowded with tourists… bus loads… all coughing without masks, and barely any room to get by them.

Excellent value for money including entrance to the castle and gardens which were both lovely and super breakfast. Shared facilities were nice and clean and the bedroom lovely and cosy. Also able to wash and dry some clothes. All the members of staff were friendly and helpful.

It’s great value for room, and access to gardens and castle plus breakfast! The room had a stunning view and the staff were lovely. But the bed was a bit lumpy and kettle was dirty. Overall a nice experience though.

The stay in the stables is poor, even for a low-budget version of the castle. The rooms are very noisy, not only noises from the guests next door (even if they do it quietly) but also from the noisy staff who start preparing breakfast at just after 6:00 am. Lots of loud talking and the radio on. The breakfast itself is good, but the breakfast location (the stable) is cold, (coincidentally?) the heating is partly defective, especially when the stable doors open on both sides because guests also enter from another part to have breakfast in the stable. The showers are extremely old-fashioned and below any current standard of comfort. Moreover, there was a cockroach walking around. The staff does their best but is partly inexperienced. In short, staying in the rooms and the stable is not worth the money and certainly does not offer the experience that the castle hotel pretends. Not recommended!

Lots of loud talking and the radio on. The breakfast itself is good, but the breakfast location (the stable) is cold, (coincidentally?) the heating is partly defective, especially when the stable doors open on both sides because guests also enter from another part to have breakfast in the stable. The showers are extremely old-fashioned and below any current standard of comfort. A great experience overall. Very atmospheric property with beautiful gardens (and bird life!) Only recommendation would be to change the double bed in room 27 which is a serious sagger. Otherwise, the room was tastefully decorated to fit the late Victorian vibe.

The room is nothing like any photos....claustrophic would be the only word i could use. All the beams were padded as they were so low. I had to stoop to walk around ...disappointing..the photos show large airy rooms....definately not. Friendly staff but not a castle experience

Was really looking forward to staying here, unfortunately disappointed, I stayed in stable annex, deco and furniture dated and worn, walls so thin you could hear conversations in rooms next door both sides, I'm sure the lodge rooms are better, staff very helpful and castle, ground very nice, just shame about the room, I didn't get to see other rooms as they were full

The Otago Peninsula is beautiful, our room was spacious with an amazing view. Could get too hot in summer. It could have been a great stay but unfortunately an incident at breakfast meant we had to leave to catch our ferry before it was ready. We arrived at breakfast dead on 7:30 and immediately ordered our food before sitting down after another couple. Unfortunately our food was given to another couple who did not realise it was theirs until they had put on salt and pepper and touched some of the toast. The waiter was very apologetic and said they would re-do ours. However at least 2-3 other tables then got their food and we were still waiting although told we were next. The couple we had arrived with were long gone by now and we just had to leave to make sure we got the ferry.

To stay in the grounds of a 'castle' was fabulous. Views from the room outstanding. Sitting on the deck awesome. Whole experience and the quality of the room fantastic. So all in quite brilliant. Highly recommend staying.

My recommendation is to not stay in the stables. There is very little headroom in the corner rooms and it made for an uncomfortable stay particularly if you have to get up to go to the loo during the night. Otherwise everything else about a stay at Larnach Castle is sublime. The dining experience in the castle at night involves average food but well worth it for the convivial shared evening with other guests and staff

Just fantastic! Staff were great. The location perfect. Breakfast very tasty. The only bad part was there was a wedding and at 1230am all of the others staying in the stables showed up drunk and without thinking there were other guests. After 30 minutes of hearing all the stupid stuff they were talking about, I finally went out and gracefully told them there were other guests staying there. They finally shut up.

There was a delicious spread at breakfast in the stables. The dinner in the castle was delicious! We were all seated together at a long table and we were chatting to the other guests. The views were splendid, the gardens were lovely as were all the interesting paths weaving around the grounds. The meal was outstanding, absolutely sensational, and it was lovely to share a meal with other guests - a welcome change from dining on seperate tables. Unfortunately the lady who showed us to our rooms on the afternoon of Wed 13th Sep was rather rude, which was a little disappointing. Other than that, the staff were very friendly and obliging. The gentleman who welcomed us into the castle to have a look around was charming and delightful, a lovely man. Thank you for a lovely stay, it's been one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand.

We loved our stay at Larnach Lodge! Brendan and Jo are the epitome of hospitality. The view from our room was breath taking. The cooked to order breakfast was also a great start to the day. This is a must stay if you are wanting to stay on the Otago peninsula!

Loved staying here! Waking up with a view of the entire city of Dunedin was incredible. The stay included breakfast in the morning (which was delicious) as well as entry into the castle and gardens. In addition, the staff was incredible and even stayed late for us to check-in after a flight delay. Would highly recommend

One of the best deals we have found. In addition to having a good clean room, you're able to tour the Castle grounds and the castle during your visit, and we were served a full breakfast that was so hardy we were unable to finish it. It was in a great location, and one of only four hotels that some of the tour groups will do pickups at. Highly recommend it.

What an amazing place to stay. Larnarch Castle is beautiful all around. If you have a chance to stay there he night- you’ll mainly have the grounds to yourself when all the tourist have left. The dinner inside the castle and the breakfast inside the old horse stable were a nice treat. Loved our stay and the views are incredible.

The Larnach Castle Lodge is just behind the main castle. The Lodge rooms have beautiful views over the Otaga Peninsula and coast. And Larnach Castle and its grounds are fantastic, and available free of charge for Lodge guests.

Do not book here unless you are okay driving up turny narrow roads with no guardrail. It is terrifying. Also there is very little parking around the lodge and stables. The view from our room was incredible...it was the best thing about our stay.

Larnach was great place to end our 10 day road trip around the bottom of the South Island. A unique experience with a range of accommodation options. Beautiful quiet setting which was fun to explore. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would highly reccommend.

I also did the dinner in the castle and it was super cool! My room was a corner room, so I had a balcony that overlooked the garden, as well as the ocean, which was amazing, especially at sunrise. Overall, I highly recommend staying at the lodge, as it was well worth my time and money. Just be aware that it’s not near any stores, so be prepared for that, especially if you don’t have a rental car. And plan any Ubers in advance.

Loved our time at Lanarch Castle. The included breakfast was exceptional. We chose to join the “Chef’s Choice Dinner” option and it was well worth it. We met some lovely people from around the globe and had the most incredible 4 course dinner with beverage. It’s more than an overnight, it’s an experience.

Lodge consisted of rooms in converted stable or separate lodge. Our room had incredible views. Room was charming and we opted for the dinner at the castle which was super fun and excellent. The host is incredible and she makes the dining experience a joy and interesting. She gave a quick tour and her entertaining stories about the castle were fun! Lodge consisted of rooms in converted stable or separate lodge. Our room had incredible views. Room was charming and we opted for the dinner at the castle which was super fun and excellent. The host is incredible and she makes the dining experience a joy and interesting. She gave a quick tour and her entertaining stories about the castle were fun! You also get free entry into the lovely castle in the morning to explore more and the gardens were beautiful. Breakfast in the stable was excellent

Endroit exceptionnel, dans les anciennes écuries du château. Nous sommes arrivés tard le soir (autour de 21h30) et avons été accueilli de manière très sympathique et chaleureuse.Petit déjeuner superbe avec un bon choix.

This is an amazing place to stay on the beautiful Otago peninsula. The castle, gardens and views are all stunning and they serve a fantastic breakfast in the stables.

Amazing views from our room - we slept with our curtains open and was awoken to the most stunning sunrise, we would have missed it if the curtains were closed - this was room 27 which was a Lodge room and even though it did not say on the room details that it had a toilet, it did, the bathrooms was lovely and warm with the underfloor heating - the wallpaper in the bedroom was not exactly laid well as the joints were so noticeable on certain walls and made the room look a little shabby but if it was repapered correctly then it would have been great - there was a lovely little family of Starlings (birds) which which had made a home by the window and it was lovely to watch them - the room was lovely and warm - the bed was sooooo comfy, best nights sleep and a deep sleep in a long time - the views from the room to the Peninsular and sea were stunning - lovely brand of tea, coffee, fresh milk in a fridge in the room - the breakfast was fabulous , lots of choice, freshly and individually cooked so it was lovely and hot, good quality ingrediants - good to be offered dietary alternatives and accommodating - super friendly staff - castle was amazing as usual, as we've stay/visited many times before - grounds beautiful to walk around - we Love Larch Castle and would highly recommend - can't wait until we can return...... Thank You for such a great stay....
