George Hotel

Beautiful location next to river. Walking distance to Chester fort, Hadrians wall. Loved The pool and gym ( so much, we rebooked for return journey). Drinks outside at sunset and delicious, affordable meal was great. Comfy lounge areas good for conversations and tips on things to see.

Room at back very quiet, hotel needs a bit of an upgrade. Busy with multi national walkers. Food was better than expected, and breakfast ok. No pool or spa available

No tv controller to be able to use in the room and no solution provided. No sauna or steam room working. Hot tub also only warm and not enjoyable .

The hotel was situated in a lovely quiet location near to the river. The views from the garden were stunning. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly and the atmosphere was great. The facilities were good everything we needed, restaurant, bar and pool if required. Would definitely recommend. Great value for money.

Great location & good for sunset drink outside, on riverside. Loved the Pool and gym and enjoyed good food at the restaurant . Comfy lounges for meeting fellow guests. Highly recommend staying here.

Great stay. Really enjoyed the pool and the breakfast. The hotel needs a little updating but other than that it was fab!

We had a nice stay, the food was lovely. The leisure facilities could do with an update. We enjoyed using the pool and steam room but it was a pity the sauna was out order.

Old building, very creaky floors. Room was spacious and clean. Facilities weren’t great. Sauna and steam room looked like they’d not worked for years. The pool was ok but the pool and gym building has seen better days and the corridor to them was full of water leaks and smelled foisty. Restaurant and bar area excellent. Great food. Location beautiful on the river. In walking distance to Chester fort. Doubt we would return.

No remote in my room, no towels in my travel companions room, rooms we not made up daily, which I’ve never experienced before, and no telephone in rooms made getting assistance a pain. The hotel was in general nice, bar and restaurant were good, staff were good and the location is lovely. But the poor housekeeping spoilt the stay a little.

Lovely 3 night stay. My only issue was that the rooms are not serviced each day, supposedly you can request this by putting the sign on the door. I did this but it still didn’t get done. This means the milk, tea and coffee are not refreshed Every day I had to ask at reception for more and as there are no phones in the rooms this is a real pain if you forget. Part of the hotel experience is to have your room done each day. Apart from that a lovely hotel gorgeous view of the garden and river from our room and really nice to sit out in the garden if the weathers good enough

My stay was ok wouldn’t rush back in a hurry rooms so basic and not the cleanest dirty marks on walls looking tired a bit . But staff friendly enough

Maybe I got a bad bedroom but I was not impressed with this hotel. Carpet was dirty, paint work chipped, nail in wall but picture missing, bed squeaked. Had to go up 1 flight of stairs to bedroom along a corridor then down another flight of stairs, with luggage is not ideal (no lift). Not a hotel I would return to - I did not sleep well because my room did not feel clean, I did mention this to reception but was advised some rooms had been updated and had new carpet and some hadn't.

A very dissapointing hotel. Pool was ok but changing rooms were dirty and a very poor shower. Our room had black mould around windows and shower, and toilet and glass shelf were dusty so obviously not been cleaned properly before we arrived. Beds were really comfy till i discovered a very unpleasant mark on my sheet. Which the receptionist had to change!! Stayed a week and in all that time we didnt see any cleaners at all serving any room. Breakfast was ok but very basic. Had to use room towels for pool and then wait at reception to get them replaced. Location was lovely and very central for all we wanted to do, ideal for a walking base. How this is 3 star i will never know. Did have a lovely pizza from the bar menu one night. Staff were friendly enough but seem to be stretched the whole time. This could be a lovely place, but it needs a lot of more attention to detail. Ok if your a walker staying 1 or2 nights but not for a weeks holidays. On the face of it all was good but a very tatty hotel that needs more staff and care. Gardens could be beautiful but there unkempt. Would not be recommending this hotel.

Simply horrendous... The building is old and needs renovating which I can absolutely deal with, what I can't deal with on the other hand is the utter filthiness of the place. The carpets, sofas, walls and pillows were all stained, cobwebs in both the bedroom and shower room. Will most definitely not be returning and would strongly advise you not to stay at this accomodation. I found the service at the hotel poor particularly at reception although the barman was very pleasant and accommodating.

Worst hotel I’ve stayed at in years!! Dirty room with outdated plugs. Staying during a heat wave but the radiator was broken on, so the room was completely un-livable. Staff was rude. Location not actually that great since there is no Hadrian’s wall anywhere near the hotel. Completely outdated property.

The setting of the George is quite idyllic and, as on previous visits, there is a welcoming atmosphere. The beds and shower facilities were also fine. However, many aspects were poor and represent further overall deterioration. The washbasin in the en suite was severely cracked and had been amateurishly filled. We felt unable to use it and saw it as a health hazard. The bodging of the splashback tiles was even worse. The toilet handle was loose, as was the toilet seat. The main room carpet had not been vacuumed. The radiator paint was peeling off and looked awful. One of the tea/coffee mugs had tea drip stains on the outside. The bar food was decidedly mediocre, though not cheap. I tried a pint of the one draught beer available and it was undrinkable. The barman allowed me a pint of keg beer as a replacement but insisted that there was nothing wrong with the draught beer and that it was the best in the area. He seems a nice man but has no idea of how to look after real ale and what it should look/taste like. As with the problems in the room, the staff response was superficially pleasant but resolutely defensive and in denial. This was our third visit to a potentially great hotel but the experience has got progressively worse and, sadly, we won’t be back.

It seemed to me that the public areas of the hotel were where any money has been spent - the restaurant, especially, was lovely - especially with it's river view. :However, for the amount I paid for the room, I expected more - it was basic. I may not be their demographically ideal customer but there were no extras with the room - no toiletries, no minibar (even just to chill drinks etc or provide bottle water). The small television, with no smart facilities, is particularly outdated.

Beautiful location and magnificent gardens plenty of outside seating and the staff were fabulous pleasant, friendly and courteous. Hotel was tired especially our room which was very very basic, considering the price we paid, the bed was a very small double, the TV was the smallest like a computer screen, the shower was very poor and the shower door didn't close and the decor was dreadful, but at least it was clean, we could have booked the Travelodge for half the price and got a better room. Check in was 3 pm and no earlier, check out was 10 am which on a Sunday was way too early we didn't even have time for breakfast but that was our fault for assuming check out was 11am or later like any other hotel, the receptionist did suggest we checked out of our room early and then have breakfast because they were serving breakfast until 10. Limited choice and variety of food in the restaurant, prices in the bar were very reasonable. Disappointing stay overall

Could have done with aircon as the radiator kept turning on auto and it was a little hot to sleep. Very nice hotel though, good staff and food/drink. We had a nice stay and would stay again.

This is lovely hotel on a beautiful location. The staff are friendly and welcoming, the food is good and reasonably priced. We were in a lovely large room with a die for view of the river and hills

The first room we checked into was next to an internal door which kept being slammed by noisy guests. We were moved to another room by a lovely and helpful member of staff without any hesitation. The second room was an upgrade from the first one and was in a much quieter part of the hotel so we are very appreciative of that. The staff were lovely, friendly and accommodating.the location is perfect next to the river and the outdoor space was great (was a lively still and sunny day). Breakfast was plentiful, hot and delicious.

George Hotel is lovely, but, with one or two exceptions, the staff seems bored and uninterested. Hard to get attention at the bar or restaurant. It seemed like an imposition when I asked a staff member to clear a table do we could sit there.

This is the second time staying at the George in the last two months, both times have been pleasant experiences. This time I want to shout out to Karen on reception, I needed a taxi to get to my final destination on checking out. I was aware from my taxi journey from Hexham that most firms would be fully boked with school runs and it was unlikely I'd get a cab at the time I needed. Karen also said the same at check in, however, she said, "leave it with me, I'll ring around". Within 10 minutes she came to me and informed me she'd got me a taxi. Some staff would have simply said, sorry you won't get one and not bothered but through Karen's thoughtfulness she went above and beyond to assist, thanks again Karen, you helped me massively with my onward journey. Finally to the catering staff, again, nothing was too much, all done with a smile and willingness to engage in conversation.

Very comfortable bed. I was given an upgrade from a single to a double room. Very friendly and helpful staff. I have stayed here a number of times and I have never been disappointed. Easy parking, which is always helpful.

All staff were extremely friendly and helpful with Lettie in particular standing out by helping with specific dietary requirements. The hotel is situated in a lovely spot by the bridge over the River North Tyne. We had a tasty and good sized breakfast the following morning to set us underway for the day's hike. The photo was the view from our room.

Evening meal choice was ok with fish chips and peas. But expected more choice for a evening at a hotel. Breakfast was extremely disappointing was shown to my table and just left. Realised it myself was self service from adjoining room. Waiter didn't seem interested! Machine drinks - why can't they be made on request fresh? Didnt bother with any drink! Self service for hot items, didnt look appetising. Sausage was bland, tasteless and tasted mushy inside. Tomato was hard both in middle and outside- how can a cook not get these cooked right? Did tell this to reception when checking out but said we will pass comments on but didnt honestly seem interested! Had previously stayed at this hotel under previous owners and it was so much better. Really gone downhill.

Wonderful stay at the George Hotel. Extremely helpful staff, in particular Sakie, who ensured we had everything we needed. Would definetly stay again, a great, cosy countryside retreat.

Great stay in a hotel beside the river, with lovely scenery. Comfortable bed meant I slept very well. Breakfast was lovely each day and so was the evening meal I had. Great location for exploring Hadrian's Wall or attending Hexham Races.

In lovely surroundings by the riverbank. Convenient for access to Hadrians Wall sites. Good restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Pleasant and helpful staff.

This is a lovely hotel, situated a 10 minute drive off the A69, and easy driving distance to Hexham, Corbridge, as well as Cumbria and further reaches of Northumberland. Excellent hotel for walkers. The hotel has no lift, so if you struggle with mobility I would strongly recommend contacting the hotel prior to visit, and they can put you in a room just off the car park (accessable via a small ramp). Nice food, pleasant staff.

Lovely location

The George hotel is historically stunning!! The entire hotel holds so much beautiful character, from the sitting rooms to the restaurant. The restaurant is also gorgeous, overlooking the river and their lovely gardens, not to mention that the food was very much fine dining for a low price.

The room was spacious and had a lovely view of the river and gardens,The receptionist on our arrival was very friendly and informative, giving us some useful advice about the area, that we acted upon. We only stayed one night here and we booked an evening meal as well as breakfast. The room was nicely decorated and had a large comfy bed with pillows that were soft and fresh. Our evening meal was enjoyable but we had to wait a while to get our food and drink order as there was some inexperienced staff serving at the tables. The wine served was of good quality, but unfortunately it was poured into thick basic wine glasses which was disappointing and ruined the experience. Unfortunately Breakfast was a let-down to say the least, basically as we had to make the most of what remained available. Even though we arrived for our breakfast half an hour before service finished, the coffee machine had over-heated and we had to make drinks with instant coffee, although we had no cups or mugs to use. Similarly, there were no breakfast plates or cereal bowls when we approached the buffet. We were met with the comment 'we are short-staffed this morning', no apologies were received during our time in the breakfast area. Plus there was no or little fresh juices, as well as the milk dispenser was near the bottom level and had to be tipped to get a few dribbles. Overall this was very disappointing and made our experience more of a chore than a pleasure. We expect better from Bespoke Hotels.

The hotel is in a fabulous position at the side of a river and our room had an amazing view over the garden to the river and bridge. It was a nice spacious room with good contents, from an ironing board to biscuits, and I would be happy to stay there again. The food was excellent, with good quality food and very good cooking. The Sunday roast was a treat and the breakfast was really good.

Room was comfortable enough but the food standard was very poor - i would compare it to McDonald's, very low quality & served colder than room temperature. When i complained about this the food was replacedin full, but still to the undercooked standard & had obviously been nuked to death in a microwave to ensure the temperature was burning hot to the mouth. Breakfast wasn't any better, buffet style & all precooked and reheated but still cold, in fact the cold milk fot the cereals was warmer. For the pricepaid for bbem (£87.50), i for one will notbe booking here again.
