Sunset Lodge

The driveway to the property was treacherous - I wish they had made us more aware of how challenging it was to drive up it even in a 4x4 and had other options clearly spelled out in the emails of if there was another place to park and walk up just for safety reasons. We almost didn’t make it and had tires spinning and it was a very scary and rough start to our Drakes Bay stay. Plus it is a long drive on tough roads to Drakes Bay and then to have the last 100 meters be one of the toughest parts was unfortunate. We stayed in the house and heads up the bathroom is downstairs from the sleeping rooms and outside in the patio area so it was a little nerve wracking to walk down there at night.

We really enjoyed our stay here! The lodge was really clean wit amazing, open spaces and a nice pool. The washroom was clean and the rooms were really comfortable with AC and multiple beds, towels, and some blankets. Raquel was an awesome host and gave us really great recommendations nearby including restaurants and a convenience store. We weren't expecting so many critters but it was easy to keep them out of the bedrooms and didn't interfere much with our stay. It was such a good environment to relax in. Super comfortable, incredibly responsive host, and was a highlight of our trip. Thanks so much Raquel!

The cabin was clean and the views from the balcony were amazing. The beds were comfortable, but the rugs on the wooden floor were incredibly slippery. It was not fully what we were expecting based on the description of the room we booked - the description said there would be aircon, microwave and TV, however these were not present in the room. The fans were just about enough to keep us cool overnight, however were not enough for during the day. The bathroom was fine - but be aware it does not have the screen/mesh that the bedroom does, and the walls do not meet the ceiling, so bugs/mosquitoes are able to get in - not ideal if mosquitoes find you as tasty as they find me. There also was no handle on the inside of the bathroom door, so no way to fully close it quietly or to lock it from the inside. It would have been nice to have had directions on how to find the hotel directly from the beach beforehand rather than walking along the road. The hotel is in a good location for the beach and there is a supermarket and restaurants close by.

This a beautiful property with rustic cabins. There are amazing views as it is high up. We saw many birds from our balcony including green parrots and toucans. It is quite a climb from the road, definitely not accessible, but close to Drake Bay beach, a grocery store and several restaurants. The staff were friendly and helpful. We pre-arranged a tour to Corcovado National Park through the hotel and it went great. You can order breakfast the day before and have it specially prepared for you at whatever time you need it. It was very good and plentiful. Some drinks are available to purchase in the reception area where you can sit and look out over the beautiful bay. We bought a few beers and some water. Very nice place.

Sunset Lodge truly did have one of the best views in Drake bay! It’s worth spending a little more to get the bungalow with the pool. It was great hanging out on the deck after a day at the beach or doing a guided activity. Also, if you like birding it’s a great spot to sit and watch! We had parrots and macaws flying over and landing in the trees right next to the bungalow. There were several local iguanas that live in the trees as well! We stayed in the Deluxe Cabin which had two AC minisplits that kept the inside nice and cool. The private pool on the deck was awesome - it was clean, cool, and VERY refreshing. Breakfast was also convenient and delicious. The only thing with Sunset Lodge is you do have to hike up some steps from the main road to get there (but is why the view is so good). We did the hike multiple times a day and it’s not too bad, 5 minutes to the beach. Would absolutely stay again!
