Parking area can be overcrowded due to fish shop. Rest was perfect

Parking was easy, staff were absolutely wonderful, nothing too much trouble, room was clean, everything we needed, great water pressure in the showers, great chippy next door which we enjoyed relaxing in the room, plus a free continental breakfast. Can not fault anything

Bar unstaffed at the time (helped by a local customer who does casual work in the bar), and minimal choice of wines. Restaurant present (green plastic tablecloths), but only available food was by take away from next door fish&chip shop (annexed to the hotel) with usual fish&chip shop menu. Room adequate though compact. Washbasin very small, very difficult to fill the kettle. Nice shower. Room clean, but not serviced between day1&2. Second day, restaurant as before, went to local pub. On return, bar had closed at 8pm. Continental breakfast only (self service) but OK.

Very friendly and helpful staff; the rooms are very comfortable and quiet. There's a nice bar and restaurant for evening meals (fish and chips is quite good). Breakfast is continental, but there is a nice variety of cereals and toast and other items. The internet was quite good, by British standards.

Lovely staff. Facilities were adequate and clean. Sadly a large party arrived at midnight and we’re noisy til 4am. spoiling my stay completely.

Chose this place after a day of hiking in Brecon. It’s a pub/chippy with a few rooms. Reception in the bar. Got taken to room which was outside, downstairs. Room was cold, and partly used as a storage room. Wasn’t very clean. Was a kitchenette there but no utensils to make use of it. The boiler cupboard in the room had a few dirty duvets, decorating material and other items that belonged elsewhere. The noise from the room/bar above travelled through and disturbed us all. The room serves a purpose after a day of hiking, and we only stayed there because we were tired. We chose to use the hotel chippy for food and also regretted that - it wasn’t very nice. Apparently the owners are quite new and finding their feet so I feel a bit hard for this review but we didn’t enjoy our stay. The breakfast was poor - a bunch of instant coffee, poor quality bread for toasting and that’s about it. We didn’t see a staff member at all apart from check in. Overall, I would recommend for a means to an end type of stay, but if you want a bit more of a personal service then go to a Travelodge.

The man in charge was very nice indeed, There is free parking which is a bonus. Coffee at breakfast was nice. There is no restaurant, no cooked breakfast, no manned bar (although there is an honesty bar). It is thoroughly basic throughout. I wouldn't say it's dirty as such, but there is a doggy smell and it certainly feels like a deep clean is required, especially upstairs in the bedrooms. But the most amusing part was that because I was a single person staying in a double room, my second pillow, other towels and even the second mug were removed! In all my years of staying in hotels, I've never seen that!

We were allocated a room (vii) which was - literally - barely bigger than the bed; the only window was in the tiny shower room which has a basin the size of a breeze block and a WC made of non-fitting parts. It was a disgrace and should not be advertised. Fortunately we spotted a larger room and after some discussion (nothing in the blurb said “small”) we were moved there. The new room was spacious, the linen and towels were clean and fresh, but the surfaces - even the TV remote - were dirty and sticky. Serious lack of maintenance: screw missing from light switch, blind wouldn’t go down at first, then wouldn’t stay up; good shower but the door wouldn’t close; no plug in sink. Nobody there to help with breakfast, but anyway we couldn’t get away fast enough. Obviously not learned much from the reviews.

Room seemed to be mid-renovation, with some things looking new and others in need of replacing or upgrading. We booked and arrived very late so were grateful they could accommodate that. Maybe the room had only been partially cleaned from the previous stay due to the late notice? The bed was clean and well-made, but there was rubbish in the drawers and it hadn't been hoovered. Toilet didn't look clean either. The next day I asked if someone could hoover and they did, but not very well and with either an old hoover or one that needed emptying (it left behind that musky smell that old hoovers have). There was plenty of space to hang and store clothes and a small tea & coffee station, but only one mug and one spoon for a double room. Very limited supply of toiletries, though we take our own everywhere so not a massive issue for us. It was day 3 before we got a top-up of toilet roll so we'd been replenishing it ourselves. The (cream) carpet was heavily stained and really needs replacing. We could see other rooms had new-looking grey carpet, which added to the feeling of it being mid-renovation. There was a squashed spider on the bathroom ceiling and lots of cobwebs. It was okay as a low-budget option. Could be a lovely place to stay with more attention to detail.

The property fell far short of what could reasonably be described as a hotel, more like rooms situated above an empty pub. On arrival, I was shown a basic breakfast room and told to operate the tea urn myself if i was to come down before 8am; only cereals were available. Access to the rooms was via a staircase with filthy, heavily stained carpet, and it appeared that only myself & my colleague were residents. My room had a damp smell, a double bed, and minimal furnishings. The en-suite area was horrendous: although the toilet was clean, there was no soap provided, just a couple of tubes of combined hair/body wash. The shower was lined with black mould, and the sink contained multiple hairs. Back in the bedroom, the carpet had clearly not been vacuumed and was littered with crumbs and various stains. A shelf was marked with numerous cup rings, and the single mug provided was stained. Nothing felt clean enough to use. The bar was completely empty, so we chose to dine at a nearby Nepalese restaurant instead. Later, I attempted to watch TV in the room, only to find that no channels were available. Unable to relax and concerned about possible bites, I remained fully clothed on the bed until morning—waking physically fine but mentally exhausted. We left the property at 07:45 without encountering any staff and went elsewhere for breakfast. My firm recommendation is to avoid this establishment entirely, and not to confuse it with the similary named Castle of Brecon Hotel!

Generally good great breakfast and friendly service but housekeeping needs to improve on room cleanliness

Proprieter stunk of smoke. Advert did not show the chip shop attached to the hotel. Choice of smells , fish and chips or cigarette smoke. Carpets stained. Different smell of wee inside hotel. Dirty cups in room, mouldy shower mats, booken windows in room with dead flies on window sills. Broken glass outside in car park. Left after 10 minutes.

Absolutely disgusting. Chipped mug in the room. Bath was dirty. Room not been hoovered. Rubbish behind side table and horrible marks on the bed.

Nothing like the photos. Very out dated and not clean. From entering the hotel, the entrance not clean or welcoming. All key were on a table by the door. Dirty carpets. Leading up to our room dirty carpets and hadn’t been decorated for along time. All doors to the rooms were open. All scruffy rooms. Quit covers massive for the quilts and hanging to the floor. We walked into our , very scruffy and floor to the bathroom very stained and not clean. At this point we decided that we would not be staying at this hotel. Not worth £89.00 per night. We have asked for a refund with hotels.com

I cannot believe this hotel is rated as good. Filthy carpets on way to rooms, halway covered in dirt, cobwebs in the room, dust on all the furniture, bed was as soft as marshmallow, no soap in toilet, just terrible. In fact it was that bad we didn't even stay, we just handed back the keys and walked out despite losing our payment.

Short overnight stop. Friendly. Somewhat tired but overall ok.

The room shown when booking and the room given to us was very different. It was right in the basement. Lots of mosquitoes and bugs. This was despite them having other rooms empty when we checked in, but they didnt give us one. Not recommended.

Staff were nice but the accommodation is very tired and in need of modernisation. We had tea making facilities… but no mugs, and an ironing board but no iron. It was very noisy, and after a long days travel we just wanted to get a good nights sleep. On the plus side although very tired the shower rooms were spotless. We were only there for one night, and probably would not have stayed more if were were booked for longer.

Went with my husband for our anniversary. Was left waiting for a key for half an hour. Someone wondered off to get it and then forgot about us. I had to go find someone else as we were waiting to go out. The 'cosy'room with a double bed which is next to a wall was lumpy and uncomfortable. Marks all over the wall and mould in the bathroom. Only 1 mug etc. The toilet seat and lid was far too small for the toilet. When I sat down on it during my half an hour wait for the key, I could feel the toilet basin all cold and wet on the back of my thighs. Decided we couldn't stay here. Went downstairs to say, couldn't see anyone so we decided to leave the key on the side in the bedroom. I got a voicemail the next day saying I had checked out and could they have the key back. They've no clue what's going on there.

Tried to cancel. Manager wouldn’t respond. Still got charged even though I didnt stay there. Manager refused to refund. Absolutely diabolical. DO NOT STAY HERE.

There was no one there at checkin I toured the whole building by myself it was very dirty and the structure was unsafe. It was supposed to be pay at check in they weren’t there but would not refund buyer be ware Expedia would not help either

Great stay at the castle hotel, staff very friendly and the room was lovely, we would definitely stay here again. The manager was very friendly and saw to our every need, even when I managed to pay for the room twice as I didn't know hotels.com had already taken the payment, he refunded the overpayment immediately.

We had a great stay and Ian was a lovely host who made us feel so comfortable. We can’t wait to come back!

Lovely, super-helpful staff Quirky place; beside lovely village of Talgarth. Comfy beds; clean and well-equipped rooms. We’ll be back!

Rom was clean and tidy, states it a hotel but it’s more like a family run BnB. Very smooth stay in a small village in wales. Can’t really fault the place
