We stayed up here before. Recently remodeled. Clean very comfortable. Nothing fancy old fashion hotel cabin unit. Comfortable bed. Very basic. (Internet service was out yet had a time to read a good book which was a good thing.) Remind you of fun vacations long ago when you were a kid. Will definitely return.

Very friendly owners. Cozy decor. The room was a bit stuffy when we first got there but it aired out just fine. Nice grassy common area. Owner lit a bonfire at night. Access to a lovely small beach across the road. Pretty pathway through the woods to get there. Just a short walk. Owners put solar powered tea lights in jars hung off branches to light the way at night. Enjoyed our stay.

Friendly warm welcoming. Cute gift shop cozy main guest cabin w/ games to borrow and neat historical items! had a small clothing closet, a bathroom w/shower, and kitchenette area with stove and fridge! patio walk out to the camp area with bonfire pit, grills, firewood pile, and a swingset play area. we stayed as family. Also the thoughtful little things they put in to this property, a dish set provided for cooking while you stay, soft blankets they placed on the bed(top notch cozy, not your regular hotel blankets) there was a little fan and space heater tucked in the closet for guests if needed, and my room had a travelers log for people to sign and leave messages from the years before. At check in she even gave us a gallon of filtered water just incase we didnt like the taste of well water. Cabins where very nice getaway for a weekend, 5 stars!

Disappointed that the cabins didn't have wi-fi even though it advertised it did. The heat was not great either. Only vent was in main room so both bedrooms freezing if you shut the doors. Free use of snowshoes and cross country skis was great.

A great view from our room of Lake Superior. Nice landscaping. Nice lodge common room. Motel room bath is quite small. The employee who was on duty was not friendly. We were disappointed we could not use kayaks or canoes as advertised. We learned they not been inspected this season, near end of summer season. First place we ever stayed we could not get ice without purchasing a bag yet the room frig had no freezer!

This is the second time we stayed. Our motel room was knotty pine and cute but the outdated bathroom was not. However, I could see they are remodeling the motel rooms and can’t wait to return. Beautiful and historic lodge with new sauna and shower room (which I wished I had used instead of the one in room.) the check in process was great.

Amazing. I would love to come back and get a cabin next time. I stayed in the motel and it was great to have a back patio (and access to a community fire pit and canoes if desired). Good price, no frills, but just what I needed.

Fun lodge feel to our room. The main lodge room/lobby was great; filled with games, puzzles, books, and a pool table. Also had snacks, beverages and ice cream treats for sale which satisfied our cravings. We enjoyed sitting on the back patio of our room, that faced Lake Superior.

Remote was dead for the TV so we could watch the weather. Mold in the bathroom. Walls were super thin so you could clearly hear next door. The water pressure was horrible. Lady at the desk didn’t seem to know what she was doing but she was nice.

Lovely, prime location, and very peaceful. I loved the more vintage lodging vibe. The trees and lake views are priceless. We appreciated the new grills and wagons! The bed was comfy and clean. My only suggestion is the windows all need deep cleaning of webs and spiders. As do the screen doors - they need replacing and tightening/secured locks. The blinds in our room are also looking rough. These were small but noticeable things but the good things exceeded these!!

Not as clean as one would like. No coffee provided in the motel with no suggestions of what one should bring or be responsible for. The room was cold even when the heater was turned up to 75. Noisy with neighbors slamming doors, could hear conversations. Ambiance OK - looking out over the Lake was nice. Bathroom very small & not updated. Not sure I'd want to stay here again.

You get what you pay for. I stayed at the motel. Loved the lodge, views of the lake and the rooms deck area. The room was comfortable. Staff are friendly. I am ok with the dated rooms. Cons were the walls are paper thin, toilet barely flushes, bathroom wasn't clean found many long dark hairs, and had problems getting warm water.

We stayed in room 7. It was very nice although I think a great benefit would be to have a microwave in this room. The main heat hadn’t been turned on yet but there was a space heater that kept the room perfect! We had a really nice small deck that looked out onto Lake Superior. You could see the water from our room! Loved all the woodwork in the room. Made it very cozy! Pet friendly!!

Solbakken Resort is friendly staffed Resort right on Lake Superior! We stayed in one of the rooms facing the highway. Problem with that is that its very noisy. At night I was able to nudge my daughter from snoring but not the people snoring in the next room! The rooms were okay, they really need updating and the fridge door wouldn't stay closed. The lake was a short walk from the hotel room and we enjoyed sitting on the rocks near the water.

Bathroom was old with almost no water pressure in the shower. During a shower the temperature suddenly went from hot to cold and stayed that way for a few minutes before it warmed back to lukewarm so I could rinse off. The bed had a noticeable sag in the middle leading to a sore back in the morning. The view from the room was fantastic, the majestic Lake Superior in all its splendor. The place was dog friendly and the staff was nice and helpful.

Great location and the owners are very nice and accommodating. The view was fantastic from our motel room. The room had everything we needed. Only complaints are that the water pressure in the shower was terrible and showers took forever and the walls are thin and you can hear your neighbors walking around and making noise. Next time we'll spring for a cabin.

From the time we checked in, service was great. Staff friendly, service efficient. The room is basic, but very clean. We parked right in front of our door. There were dishes and pans and a 2 burner stove perfect for whipping up breakfast and a grill off a private deck to grill dinner. Tables and chairs outside for our convenience. Great place to stay if you are looking for reasonable, clean, friendly and dog friendly. We will be sure to go back.

We asked for a room with two beds. They accepted our order, but the room developed a water leak. They upgraded us to a Suite at no extra charge. The Suite was beautiful! We couldn't have been more pleased with our stay. I Thank The Staff for their Decision! David Weatherhead

We had an awesome time during our stay at Solbakken. Lovely grounds, staff is fantastic and a beautiful view of the lake. Our only issue was our furnace didn’t work, but they brought us a space heater the minute they were notified it wasn’t working. Thanks for a great stay! We will be back.

Definitely an old-school resort, but it fit our needs just fine, and the person at the desk was very responsive to requests and committed to making sure we had a good stay.

Trip was to attend a memorial for my sister. Reservation not found upon arrival, was told it was canceled, put us in a cabin for $80 more/nt; No heat in cabin, had to use space heaters. I’m disputing the charge, as we had made reservations for motel room #12 facing the lake for $106, and ended up paying $185 for a dinky cabin. Not going back and will not recommend to others.

I really enjoyed the area, being so close to the lake was really nice. The accomodations were a little rustic but the price was nice for such a pretty view. Our trip was in the winter but I bet it's idyllic in the summer.

Very nice rustic option for those not wanting to pay the standard resort prices on the north shore. Great location on the north side of Lutsen with easy access to the Superior Hiking Trail. We stayed in the motel section. The rooms are a little outdated but great for the price! Each has a small kitchenette that provides the option of some easy meals in the room. We enjoyed breakfast here each morning before setting off on our daily adventures to see the nearby waterfalls. They were also in process of updating the motel room bathrooms. The staff was super friendly and we enjoyed some great conversation upon check-in.

Solbakken Resort was a comfortable stay with a great view of Lake Superior. It's close to Grand Marais and a lot of restaurant and activity options. We only stayed for the night but I would love to come back and spend more time here. We happened to be there when there was quite the weather storm coming through. Since we aren't from this part of the U.S. the flash flood warnings had us concerned. But the Solbakken sits in a safe area and there was no impact by the rains. Other stretches along highway 61 weren't so lucky. We spent the evening in the main lodge playing pool and enjoying the hot cocoa. The rooms have a kitchenette and there's access to fire pits, grills, and relaxing private patios. Like I said, I would love to comeback and spend more days here!

Nice clean room with a wonderful view of Lake Superior from our private deck. Minor plumbing issues. Only got a trickle of water from the bathroom sink and the shower drain was very slow, so we ended up standing in an inch of water. Rooms have a kitchenette, so no breakfast is offered.

From the time we checked in, service was great. Staff friendly, service efficient. The room is basic, but very clean. We parked right in front of our door. There were dishes and pans and a 2 burner stove perfect for whipping up breakfast and a grill off a private deck to grill dinner. Tables and chairs outside for our convenience. Great place to stay if you are looking for reasonable, clean, friendly and dog friendly. We will be sure to go back.

We did the Circle tour and Solbakkens was our last night on the road. The resort is a cabin style with a lodge where you can use the spa, play pool, do a puzzle or read and relax. Bed was comfortable but a bit squeaky. Loved the lakefront view of Lake Superior in the morning! No breakfast and we went over to nearby ski resort for supper.

We stayed in a small suite with a kitchenette area. The bed was very comfortable. The view was gorgeous. The only downfall is that there is no one that comes in and changes out your towels, or removes any trash you have. You have to get your own towels if you need more, plus take out your own trash if it gets too full. I’m not fussy about having the bed made or changed so that was fine. Overall though we really did love the place.

Solbakkon has kept the old school feel of the lake resort. We stayed in the motel part that was pet friendly. The room was dated, but expected. Everything was clean. A small kitchenette and dishes where perfect for breakfast. Walking around the property was beautiful. And the lodge was great with games and hang out space. The staff was friendly, even sweet treats offered!! We also stayed warm and comfortable in negative degrees.

Couple easyfix things: Internet & water. Water has sort of osmotic taste, and even for brushing teeth it is not appropriate. Internet is very weak. We cook. And for us kitchen seemed understaffed. We have our own spices, oil, sugar, but if you plan relying on them- be informed bringing everything. Overall it is outdated. At least it is 40yo. and not much chanched since then. The driving route along the property is in very bad shape, it is basically as off-road, not fun. No light at night or signs to see where to go.

Fun lodge feel to our room. The main lodge room/lobby was great; filled with games, puzzles, books, and a pool table. Also had snacks, beverages and ice cream treats for sale which satisfied our cravings. We enjoyed sitting on the back patio of our room, that faced Lake Superior.

We had a unit of the motel. We had a short walk downhill to the lake which was lovely. The unit was adequate. the beds were adequate, the sheets and comforters and towels were unquestionably clean. The open floor area wasn't large enough for a yoga mat, but we could put yoga mats on the attached deck. The bathroom had lovely, new tile and floor and lots of hot water. The kitchen area had no light, so I was always chopping in my own shadow from the room overhead light. It would be very simple to put a small light above the sink. Kitchen supplies were the bare minimum. The electric stove burners barely got hot enough to boil water. The locks on the doors were flimsy. The doorknobs locked but there was no other more secure lock, like a deadbolt. The manager was present and gave me what I needed - matches and a workable can opener, although she seemed annoyed that she had to be there at all. The lakefront is beautiful and it's an easy twenty miles to Grand Marais, so I might stay there again.
