Wayside Inn

The inn was amazing! Beds were perfect and the shower was out of this world. Needed a thicker comforter but heat worked great. Entertainment director was super friendly and helpful. Only drawback was we were there when the tavern was closed. Have to try it out next time....there will definitely be a next time!

Wonderful historic town and tavern. When you want to stay in something other than the usual hotel this is a fun alternative. Historic for sure - dining only on certain days but plenty of good choices around - don’t miss Shaffer’s barbecue further down road - incredible food!!!!!

We were very surprised that the Tavern and Restaurant were closed. This should have been advertised before booking. The room was very clean, but the bathroom was very dated with peeling paint, the bathtub was scaled with residue, and discolored peeling concrete resin. The carpet was old, stained, and bubbling up, which is a tripping hazard. The window shades in the room were ripped and broken as well. THIS INN has SO much Potential, so sad to see how run down it is. I booked this thinking it was a quaint little inn for our 10th anniversary.I was shocked and did not expect the accommodations to be what they were. We made the best of it, but it was very disappointing.

What a gem! The place is fantastically kept, the decor (including Holiday) was beautiful. Our room was comfortable, drinks and dinner at the Tavern were excellent. The Service was exceptional. Our check-in clerk (Brittany) was so nice and knowledgeable about the Inn. She gave us a tour along with the history. We loved our stay and will definitely return!

Beautiful historic facility but in need of much updating. Staff rarely on the property and not overly friendly. Owner shows a lack of hospitality knowledge: cheap soap/shampoo, no glasses provided, no room refrigerator or available ice except from the staff during 9-5 hours. Dangerous situation with the TV cable strung across the floor at bathroom door.

Only stay here if you are a history buff. Do not stay on an upper floor during the summer. The cooling is terrible because of the age of the building. It was clean and quiet. Picture is deceptive because the bar and restaurant are not open.

If you are at all a history buff or want something other than the chains then this is a good place for you. The restoration succeeds in recreating the ambience of the 18th and 19th centuries in a major way. Check out the paintings and portraits of past times. The suite was comfortable and spacious, with en suite facilities. A bit dated but certainly serviceable and well-functioning. Be prepared to carry luggage up narrow stairs of the times. The tavern was closed the day we stayed but Winchester is a short 15 minute drive east. It has a wonderful pedestrian common full of shops and restaurants. There are also restaurants near the Inn itself. Probably the best way to experience the Inn is to spend two or three days there rather than an overnight; as a destination including exploration of the area.

If you love history, you'll love this place! Opened in 1797 so you'll be staying in an historical building full of antiques! The Tavern is not open Monday and Tuesday but was not an inconvenience for me. It was QUIET!

It was a good stay. We knew it was an old building and we like to find those and check them out. I would like to eat there sometime and we will most likely stop again. Had dinner in the tavern. It was good.

Me and my husband really loved this place. Our room needs had a very small bathroom and overall needs a little mantainance but it's a really old place so we didn't care. The atmosphere is lovely. They have complementary tea and coffee with some snacks. We ate in the tabern and the food was delicious. Really reccomanded

I really want to be refunded for my stay I was greatly disappointed in everything about the Inn the Inn keeper should not be stating the Inn is beautiful and warm. Was lacking paint and carpet cleaning and windows not working and terrible bathroom and I will never use Inn ever of course but also never use Hotel.com

We arrived on Saturday, October 7. First we had a problem checking in, they said because we changed our date from the 6 to the 7. We would be getting the cheaper $84 room. I paid the full purchase price at the time of booking, that was approximately $234. We were told someone was coming in for that room, I was never told over the phone that we could not have the suite room we booked. We were told next that they just “threw “ us in a different room. This room was so filthy and the tiles in the bathroom were falling off, there was mold in the caulking and the bathtub had hair & dirt in it. I turned the fan on in the ac unit and was hit in the face with so much dust and mold smell. We could not stay in the room and left at 11pm. I was told by the manager that we would be getting a refund earlier in the evening, that was two months ago, No refund yet. After returning home I became so sick from infections due to the mold and had to go to the doctor, now due to this problem I now have a mold issue, now my immune system is compromised due to the filth we encountered at this Inn! Never would we recommend this establishment to anyone. Had this been handled better with the management things might have been different. Just a side note, the person at the front desk rudely told myself and the next couple how much she hated Expedia, funny since that’s who we all rented the rooms through! I’m out $200 for a room we never were able to sleep in, thank God we left when we did! Never again!

It was quaint and interesting, but beware if you don’t like the smell of antiques. I had to track down staff to check in and call the manager who frankly seemed a bit miffed that I called her. Staff member was friendly upon arrival. Water pressure in the shower was not great, although the room was clean.

If you like history, historical buildings and ghosts, then this is the place you! You can get a free tour of the building with one of the Staff during the day, or you can do your own at night with the ghosts. Our room was clean, the bed was comfortable and I can't wait to stay there again!

We were fortunate enough to stay in one of the original rooms. Beautifully decorated, comfortable,clean and quiet. Exceptionally nice staff which told us the history of the Inn. I look forward to returning and having brunch with them on a Sunday.

Super creepy and old, feels haunted, tiny bathroom and 3 steps to access it. Need a step stool to get into bed. No staff on property after 8pm.

Very unique piece of history to stay in. It's like a step back into time. Love the water well that is preserved in the dining room. Each room is different. It's not a chain hotel vibe if that's what you're looking for - it's way better than that!

This place is oozing with charm and history. Lovely people work here. Very, very old building - don't expect standard rooms. But if you are willing to go down historical paths - you will love this inn. In other words, showers are squeezed into small spaces and floors and walls slant in places. Otherwise, they provide all the basic amenities and I wouldn't hesitate to stay there if I pass through again.

Great old period inn. Rooms were spectacularly decorated. However no heat in our room. Had to move. One lamp out of three worked. Shower head sad. No hair dryer. Overall a good experience

This is an old country inn--parts date back to the 18th century, but the HVAC, WiFi, and bathroom fixtures worked well. Monica at the front desk was super-helpful and friendly before and during our stay. If possible, plan to do at least one meal in the dining room. Food is excellent.

Facilities consistent with historical age and traditions of the hotel. There were few people staying at the hotel and arrival registration was by phone which was a first for me. The staff was helpful however.

No services at all, if you want a towel there is a few hours everyday that there is someone there, don’t ask a question after those hours. You’ll be talking to yourself

This inn is absolutely amazing. Staff went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and our stay was memorable. We plan to come back very soon!

We arrived very late but man from the bar was extremely helpful and walked us to our room. Was a nice place to sleep, wish we had more time to explore.

The accommodations were great. The room was clean. Besides the few restaurants in the area, you had to drive everywhere.

If your history buff exploring the area this is your ideal base of operations. Close to many local historical sites and the place itself is a piece of Americana. If the walls could talk in this place who knows what it would tell us about the past. The place is remarkably well kept given its age and the centuries old architecture lends to the quaintness of this landmark.

The staff was positive and quick to tell me all the ways I may be haunted whilst there - fun! :-) I ate at the inn for dinner the first night and the BLT and fries were perfect - as well as the dirty martini. Will definitely use this as a stop in the future.

We stayed last year on July 4th. ...really liked it...decided to make it an annual event. I like the small town atmosphere.

Stayed at the Wayside Inn/Larricks Tavern in Middletown (basically on the Cedar Creek battlefield). A quaint historical place, like staying in someone's fancy home. I will return here on future explorations of the Shenandoah.

Such a beautiful place to stay. This is a historic inn that has so many wonderful rooms to explore. The tavern on site has great food and if you’re lucky like we were, excellent entertainment. We will definitely be back.

The hotel has all the charm you'd expect from a 1797 Inn. Will definitely return for a long weekend, and check out the National Historic sites in the area. The restaurant had excellent food and service.

The Wayside Inn in Middletown, VA was so lovely. The building is old, 1797, and it has been lovingly cared for. I died in Larrick's Tavern and my meal was delicious. I highly recommend staying here.
