Balinese onsen ryokan Hakone Airu

With top notch experience options for dining, massage booking options, and private onsens, it doesn't get much better than this wonderful location. There isn't a spectacular view, but it is decent, and the room, and how they treat you, is astounding. From an awesome lobby and common areas, to a spacious room and incredible experience, this is a place I would love to return to.

Please understand the room benefit of a drink credit is not applied to your bar tab. That is some drinks they put in the room at the start of your stay and call complimentary. We had drinks each night thinking we were using this credit and owed at the end. It is difficult to get a cab and the shuttle is rare. Definitely take a cab to the onsen. The hill is more than 20 minutes walk from station.

2 adults stayed in Superior Room, Non Smoking, Mountain View 3F with open-air bath + Private Room Meal overnight. The service was impeccable the moment we walked in. The staff spoke English well and were very friendly. Checking in was easy. We got a call a before dinner and went to the dining area for a private room meal. The meals were beautifully presented and delicious! Our breakfast the next day was also the same quality and amazing. We wish we had a menu for the breakfast menu too so we know what delicious food we were eating! The room was spacious. There is tea and water in the fridge. They provide yukatas and everything skincare, body care and hygiene products. During our mealtime, they prepared the futons for us so we returned to our beds already made! The private onsen was the best experience and could fit 2 adults. Very worth it for those who haven’t experienced it before. We had an relaxing and wonderful experience. Our only regret was that we only stayed one night. Highly recommend! Thank you! We arrived at Hakone-Yumoto station late at ~5:30PM and the shuttle buses had stopped so we ended up walking. But the hills were steep so don't walk especially if you have large and multiple luggage. If you can, take a taxi or the shuttle bus for a small fee directly to the hotel or take the bus labelled K - 325 with Yumoto-Nakajuku as a stop. This will drop you off at a building next to the hotel. You can take this bus back from the hotel to Hakone-Yumoto station.

The room was cozy, the outdoor Onsen was fantastic. We love the privacy and the Mountain View. The staff was well trained and extremely helpful, especially the food servers. We enjoyed every moment of our two night stay. One issue that can be improved is the lack of a shuttle service for the guests. The Ryokan is on a rather steep slope and dragging our luggage back and forth was a real choir. Difficult to get a taxi from the Ryokan and the shuttle bus was not readily available. The Ryokan should have a van and a driver to ferry people back and forth between the Ryokan and the town. Charge a bit more to cover the cost, we for one, will gladly pay for the convenience! Overall, well done, and thanks.

Great private onsen with great view. Great staff service. The hotel is located on steep hill, so they recommend you take a taxi or a shuttle bus that only runs in limited time slots. Unfortunately, the Uber app kept crashing on me whenever I tried to hail a taxi and I don't have a local Japan phone number to install the other taxi apps. Luckily for me and my partner, our stay was only one night, so we left our luggage back at a hotel in Tokyo and braved the hill.

Beautiful hotel, with amazing sweet staff, the room was amazing especially the private outdoor onsen in our room. There are also 2 public onsens available on the ground level. Rarely full as most people are in their private room onsen. Close to the train station, and an easy walk into town. A little uphill walk, with suitcases, maybe a challenge, but otherwise, great location! We walked up and down to the train station without a problem. We will be back!!

Felt it’s a little overcharged but the experience was good overall. The outdoor onsen is highly recommended. Dinner service is good. Only suggestion I would give is that if the hotel can organise pick up from station that’ll be even more considerate as it’s uphill walk from station and a bit of a distance

I stayed in the hotel for two nights and was bitten by insects many times. I asked the waitress and she said they were small mosquito bites. But when I got back to Tokyo, the physician said those were insect bites, not mosquito bites and got a proscription of some medicine. The bitten areas were hard and painful and some pus came out.

Clean and hospitable hosts

I liked the breakfast and dinner. The staff was very helpful. I did not like the charges for every lil thing. Seems like they nickel and dime their guests. The rooms were very worn. At one point I had to kill a big spider and water bugs. The pjs provided were heavily worked and so were the yucatas. Many of the room appliances were rusty or not working. Did not meet the expectations for a close 600 a night rate.

Property was beautiful. Staff great. Food was only ok-must be an adventurous eater. Room was fine but not the cleanest. Cost is very high for what you get.

The room was spotless, the linen was comfy and smelled fresh. The stuff was super polite. We enjoyed the in-suite onsen very much, also impressed by the artistically presented delicious half board meal and the breakfast.

Very discreet and very quiet hotel (only 15 rooms). Room was big (good enough for three tatami with room to spare), has a small terrace with our own hot spring bath. It was a very relaxing experience soaking in the hot bath during the morning while enjoying the green mountain scenery. Location is a bit out of the way and up on a winding slope, but who cares, I didn’t feel the need to go out when I was there.

I loved my stay at Hakone Airu. It was peaceful, quiet and the staff were able to speak English. The facility was very tourist friendly. I absolutely loved the private onsen and being able to dip in and out whenever we liked. The lounge space next to the private onsen is such a bonus. The bathroom and shower were very clean as well. The only slight discomfort was the fact the shower is exposed to the outside so can be very cold when you initially step in the shower during winter time.

Had a great stay at Hakone Airu, the service was quick and polite, and the rooms were great. They also gave a lot of food for dinner and breakfast. the ryokan itself was quiet, clean, and we'll maintained. I would recommend this place to anyone. The only thing I would say could use improvement is that the wifi is very weak.

Very nice resort, focused on rest and relaxation. The staff were very responsive, and took care of everything. There is no exercise room, and no western style chairs in the rooms.

While this property could use a renovation as some of the rooms and components appear to be aging, this was a lovely stay and the staff were incredible throughout our entire time. This is a great middle of the road option for people to look for if they would like a private onsen.

Good overall. Nice amenities and onsen in the room. Food was overall ok. Internet access was slow.

Overall is good, the only one thing is privacy in the private hot spring area and shower room is not enough privacy. I thing they can make some more plant to enhance the transparency.

This morning we were supposed to take the taxi to the train station and the hotel said they had reserved two taxi for us. But the hotel told us both taxis couldn’t come right before we had to leave, we had to walk to the station in the rain. We almost miss the train.

It’s a nice hotel but you can see its age. Service is excellent but I get a bunch of messages from the hotel to remind me what not to do which makes me feel a little uncomfortable.

The staff were very helpful, especially in trying to account for my husband's dietary requirements. The room was spacious and comfortable, and the private onsen was wonderful. I enjoyed the food a lot and I recommend trying the shonan gin tonic! It cost us 800 yen to reach Hakone Airu by taxi from the train station. You can take the shuttle bus for 200 yen, but I'd note that it would be difficult to ride it with large suitcases.

Overall great experience. Would have given them a 5/5 stars, but unfortunately had an unpleasant encounter with checkout. Upon checking in, we were told that our checkout is 11 AM. Our booking information also said checkout is 11AM. At 10:10 AM, we received a phone call that we were late for checkout. Tried to reconfirm with staff that our checkout time was 11 AM, but we were told no and that we must check out immediately. We were just about to use our private onsen one last time, but unfortunately were not able to as we rushed out of the hotel room.

After checking in, I received a rude message from the hotel stating that foreign tourists are a problem for Japan because of their supposed bad manners.

I had a great stay at Hakone Airu, but I want to highlight that the staff is incredible and they do anything in their power for people to feel welcome. I had forgotten something at the hotel and they shipped it to my next location in Tokyo immediately - really appreciate their promptitudine!

This was one of our favourite stays in Japan. The staff were super accommodating to me and my dietary restrictions which I appreciated so much! One person in our party left something behind and the hotel staff we super nice and helpful to send the item to them at our next hotel. We will make sure to stay here again our next time in Japan.

I would not stay here again. 2nd cup of coffee was extra. Everything extra. Staff has poor communication skills, does not understand. No one is helpful- rules, rules, rules. No management visible or available. Did not honor Expedia perks. Overall not good.

Amazing from the moment you check in to when you check-out. Room with onsen was spectacular. We selected the Japanese dinner and breakfast options which were different foods we were use to but so delicious. The facility is beautiful and so clean. Staff is the best we experienced in our visit in Japan. Staff even walked us to the bus stop.Highly recommend.

This hotel was excellent - fantastic and helpful service, very clean both in the rooms and in the common areas, great food, serene atmosphere, and generously sized rooms. Our room had a balcony with a private onsen, which was absolutely worth the splurge. The view was beautiful. I was pleasantly surprised by how comfy the futons were when we slept. The location was convenient to the bus lines but still so peaceful and quiet. 10/10 stars, without hesitation. I would love to come back!

Fabulous! Not a negative comment about anything. Everyone was so welcoming. The food was delicious. The private onsen on the patio was the cherry on top. Easy walk to town for us but i will add there is a steep slope that could be challenging for some with luggage so you may want to take the bus. Highly recommend this experience!

Staying at Hakone Airu was one of the absolute highlights of our trip to Japan — a truly unique and unforgettable experience! We traveled with our two children (8 years old and 10 months), and both of them loved the private onsen in our room. Being able to enjoy the hot spring as a family, in the comfort and privacy of our space, made it incredibly special. The service was exceptional — every staff member was warm, welcoming, and attentive. The meals were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, adding to the overall experience. The location is quite convenient, not too far from Hakone-Yumoto Station. We chose to walk, and although it's a bit of an uphill climb, it was very manageable and well worth it once we arrived. If you're looking for a serene, luxurious, and family-friendly ryokan experience in Hakone, this is the place. We would return in a heartbeat!

Das Personal ist unglaublich freundlich und hilfsbereit. Der Balkon mit dem private bath ist unglaublich schön. Das Hotel liegt auf einer sehr steilen Straße. Da hoch zu kommen war schön anstrengend mit Koffer es geht jedoch immer schlimmer und man wird entlohnt mit der wundervollen Aussicht.

Booked for a private open air bath. The bath was sensational after a long week of exploring. We had the dinner option. Dinner was fresh, filling and delicious.

Dinner is disgusting. Tasteless. Sashimi is awfully not fresh. Tuna turned sour. They probably put it in the fridge for a long time even sashimi plate is very cold. Hot pot was revolting. Strange vibes.

Everything was amazing. Only downsize is that there was no non-seafood japanese breakfast.

Overall good, food quality and options could improve

We totally enjoyed our stay at Hakone Airu! The property and rooms were beautiful and the private onset although a little too hot was very enjoyable! The meals were very generous. Be prepared for a lot of fish though. Even if you order the shabu shabu, you will get fish appetizers. The meals are definitely for those with adventurous tastes and we enjoyed the experience. The only thing I can say I didn’t like was that for breakfast we had to pay extra if we wanted a second coffee- that didn’t seem right. We recommend this ryokan.

We truly enjoyed our stay here. The service was top notch. Food was amazing and the in room onsen was amazing as well. Very private and quiet area. Walkable distance to the train station with lots of convenient stores around the area.

All the staffs were very nice and the property is beautiful! We had a good experience! Only one thing we didn't like is the food. We both had different traditional Japanese food before here, but this was not good. I hope the kitchen can explore and if they can improve, this place is a 10/10! Excellent room & view. Private onsen was great and the room was a unique experience. Didn’t enjoy the food & they served the exact same meal for breakfast every morning. Also, it felt a bit disingenuous to advertise breakfast as “private room meal”. The evening meal is not included, which costs 6,600 yen per person.

The food was absolutely delicious and the portions left us very full. It helped a lot as we burned calories with our different adventures.
