The duke of Wellington is an extremely good pub (great beer, food and atmosphere etc) but the rooms are something else! All are outside in the pub grounds, very roomy, spotlessly clean and so comfortable. Also olde-worldey atmosphere but very beautifully done with excellent modern facilities. I can’t praise this accommodation highly enough. It’s about 1/2 mile from Matlock town but no need to go into Matlock to eat as the extensive menu is very good value and includes a range of vegetarian meals which was fab for me. Thank you to the team at the Duke of Wellington, we will be back soon!

Great location near to Matlock town centre, cosy pub with good options for food and drink. Room was clean and cosy for our small family.

Staff were really friendly at arrival and breakfast, Steph really took care of us during our stay. The food both at dinner and breakfast was good pub food and definitely needed after a long trip. The room itself is basic but very clean, additional items such as tv, kettle, tea,coffee milk, shampoo/conditioner, soap and towels were all provided. The rooms are in converted stables next to the pub and we didnt really hear any noise from the pub or other guests so managed to get a good nights sleep. Around the accommodation was a lovely little garden with a little pond that looks well looked after it nice to view in the morning. We have a car so the steep hill up to the pub wasn't an issue but other guests would need to consider this if planning to walk into Matlock. Overall, a really lovely stay and we would be happy to stay here again.

Excellent the room was outside in the grounds of the hotel. There were a few steps up to our room but not a problem. Very clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was really good and good value.

Where to start. We checked in and got told we had to pay for our 2 dogs, which was not specified when I booked and it stated that there is no charge for dogs. We went to our room, and was greeted by the overwhelming smell of damp and fust. There was black mould near the toilet, behind the sink and behind a lot of cabinets as well as rotten carpet. Everything was covered in thick dust, and there was many cobwebs and spiders. The occupant upstairs took a shower and a wet patch appeared in the ceiling. I am really not sure how we managed to sleep in that room. We got into a bed that felt damp and woke up to all our clothes being damp as well as tight chests presumably from the mould. We did get a refund for the dogs, upon proving where we saw that it said no charges apply. We complained about the room and got told that they are getting round to deep cleaning. Honestly, no human or dog should be allowed to stay in a room like that. We all felt disgusting. The management seemed very much aware of the damp. The room should not be let out until changes are made. Absolutely outrageous.

Check in was brilliant when we arrived late night. Noise from the room above was terrible at half passed midnight, which was for at least an hour jumping upstairs. Shower is really slow could actually Wee quicker. Bathroom needs a good clean/ re grout the tiles, green in some areas.

Disgusting room, cobwebs, spiders , black mould all around the bath , mould on picture frame, very hard mattress , creaky bed , stains on walls , just awful , please avoid not fit for purpose , can’t understand good reviews ! There must be better rooms , ours was no 8 !!!! Stay away unless want to sleep with spiders !!

Property is dingy. Room was tired and smelled it. Bathroom looked unclean and smelled horribly musty/moldy. Strongly perfumed “air freshener” plugged in to try to mask the mustiness. Found clumps of hair on the old worn carpet. Staff who gave the key was friendly which was the only positive. Managers were not helpful saying the room was fine and recently renovated! Looked like the only “renovation” was maybe the bed cover? They said I could leave if I wanted! If I had transport, I would have!

We liked the staff, and the pub which was warm and welcoming, also the quaint accommodation. The room we stayed in was average and okay as a base to sleep. We didn't like the bathroom as it hadn't been cleaned properly, there was mould around the sides of the bath and shower screen, the plug hole was covered in rust (making it difficult to keep clean) and full of hair and the bath itself hadn't been cleaned properly therefore we were both unable to have a shower. Also the window was full of cobwebs, not just a days worth either, something which would have taken seconds to put right with a feather duster! Overall we were very disappointed after the warm welcome we had received as we would have liked to have been able to have given a good review but just couldn't!

Room was nice and clean (except for some high altitude spider webs 😝). Only criticisms were the pump / boiler / macerator / mechanical device that was ‘kicking in’ each hour or so for a couple of minutes (felt like we were on top of it) and Biffa collecting the glass recycling at 05:30 on a Bank Holiday Monday morning…😣

Property is dingy. Room was tired and smelled it. Bathroom looked unclean and smelled horribly musty/moldy. Strongly perfumed “air freshener” plugged in to try to mask the mustiness. The staff in the pub appeared helpful and welcoming, if i needed anything, i felt they would be happy to help. I felt safe there as a solo traveller. I had a bath. Before coming, I went for a nature walk in Lumsdale Valley circular walk and only had to drive a few minutes from there to get to the Duke of Wellington. I ate in the pub. We stayed in room 8. This room was below average, very tired looking bathroom & and not very clean, need money spending. Hot shower was a plus. Cobwebs an issue spiders visible but can’t be helped. Beware no fridge in this room. Double bed was poor quality and noisy. Bed linen was clean. Pub a few steps away, friendly staff & regulars. Location is at the top of a very steep hill, so not suitable for anyone with ailments or disabilities.

Staff were really friendly at arrival and breakfast, Steph really took care of us during our stay. The food both at dinner and breakfast was good pub food and definitely needed after a long trip. The room itself is basic but very clean, additional items such as tv, kettle, tea,coffee milk, shampoo/conditioner, soap and towels were all provided. The room was ok. Nothing to write home about, bathroom adequate although the tiles were loose. Breakfast for which we paid on check in; well it was £10 each so not expensive but no options. No cereal although there were some boxes but no dishes or milk. No options on what we wanted. We’d booked it fo 8:30 am on a Sunday morning so not late. The server really couldn’t be bothered and wanted us gone. Didn’t ask if we wanted more coffee/tea. On the whole, I wished we’d have gone elsewhere for breakfast where someone wanted our money.

Overall the stay was pleasant....the staff were friendly and welcoming, the food was very good, my partner was really impressed with his steak and stilton & mushroom sauce and the drinks were reasonably priced. The only slight negative for me was the accommodation, the pillows were just awful, literally felt like cut up cubes of foam (sorry don't like to be negative) I even folded up a bath towel and put this inside the pillow case as it was so bad, that didn't help much either. There was also mould in the room around the windows. It was a very basic room but had all the tea/coffee making facilities, shower gels in the bathroom and a T.V....ok if you are looking for a cheap n cheerful stay. Just to warn, the pub actually gets really busy so if you are planning to stay and eat, then I would definitely reserve a table beforehand if you can.
