The George Hotel

A hotel with plenty of charming character. As it is the Christmas season the decorations were up and were lovely. The room was a good size and the bedding very good quality and comfortable. Bathroom lovely and warm and quality toiletries. The bar was nice with friendly staff. Breakfast was really nice and plentiful. Reception staff were professional and very friendly and helpful. Carparking was convenient and only £3.00 for the overnight stay. Would highly recommend staying at this hotel.

Check in person was very good but giving less than great rating as there is no elevator/lift. Being on 3rd/ 4th floor with long flights of stairs is not welcoming. They did carry my bags up and was happy about bring bags down this morning. However when I asked in the morning it was greeted with very poor reception.

Second time staying at The George. Confusion at check in we had booked a pet friendly room which the hotel had no record of. I did have the emails to confirm this but the hotel managed to find a pet friendly room, not sure what would have happened if there wasn’t one available! Nice staff and very nice well catered for breakfast and a very pet friendly hotel which is important to us.

Parking good and seemed secure, missed the part of a £3 fee when booking, maybe we overlooked. Our standard room was on 3rd floor, no lift, so wished we’d packed lighter! An old building which might explain the marked slope in the room which took some adjustment. Hot water took an age to come through. Beer great in the bar. Top notch breakfast. Very pleasant & efficient staff. Hotel enjoys great position, suited us on a long journey from the Far North….would definitely stay here again.

The hotel is older but the parking was good at the back of the hotel and the location was excellent

Lovely old hotel. Nice and clean. If you're any of the upper floors, there's no lift so be prepared to get your steps in. The food in the restaurant was great. The waiter was very attentive and helpful.

Very disappointing upon arrival to find no available car parking, despite being listed as having a car park. The car park is not reserved for guests of the hotel & rather serves as a public car park - first come first served. Upon querying this with the hotel we were told we could find alternative parking in the town, but when we asked if it was open 24 hours, and secure - we were met with a shrug of the shoulders. Room was clean & comfy but overall the hotel is chaotic and looks tired. I would stay elsewhere if we were to stay in Penrith again.

We have stayed here before. The staff are great, food is good and there is plenty of space. The location is perfect in this lovely town. Dog friendly and human friendly too. It is an old hotel but that adds character not detracts from it. Highly recommend.

Our room was too hot and only had winter duvets available. We couldn’t sleep for the heat and other visitors said the same, seems any rooms above the boiler or kitchens were worst. Our room seemed to be near where seagulls roosted and because we had to have the windows open because of the heat we were woken every few minutes with the gulls squeaking. The hotel was looking tired and needed a good clean. The bar was a dumping ground and was dirty to say the least. On the plus side the bed was comfortable.

This is a wonderful old world Hotel, full of history and character. Everything was spotless and clean including my room, which certainly impressed me. It really did tick all the boxes.

A warm greeting on arrival but things went steadily downhill from then on. Parking was a trip round the one-way system and then a charge of £3. The kitchen extractor had supposedly broken down so there was no hot food. The local eateries that we were directed to were either closed or not serving food. We ended up with a take-away pizza not having eaten since breakfast and after a 5 hr drive. The hotel itself is in need of a serious facelift. There were several areas that were dirty along with scuffed paintwork. Our bathroom had a dribble of someone else's toiletries down the wall above the bath. Breakfast was a big let down with some very dull choices, empty fruit bowls and dry/luke-warm cooked food. Service was very poor and at no time did anyone come to clear our dishes, we had to remove them to an empty table. On leaving we counted 5 members of staff assembled by reception, none of whom were paying attention to the dining-room, one on their mobile phone. There was no effort at check-out to ask if we had had a pleasant stay. Altogether a very disappointing experience.

We had a lovely overnight stop at the George. The staff were friendly, polite and helpful and the whole place was spotlessly clean. Our room was very comfortable and the bar was very nice.

We took a punt with this hotel due to its central location and convenient transport links. We were in town for a wedding, and spent 4 nights. On arrival our initial room on the 3rd floor [no elevators - be warned] was far too pokey for my partner and I. We had two wide suitcases. The hotel reception manager swiftly arranged a suitable alternative in the annexe across the car park. It was a superb replacement, spacious, more modern with comfy beds to boot. Breakfast was delicious. Cold buffet and many hot cooked options. The one major let down. We had no housekeeping whatsoever. No fresh towels, beddings, toilet rolls etc across 4 nights. Very unusual. We got on with it without complaining. It was disappointing considering apart from this aberration, we really enjoyed our stay.

Was there for four nights but never had my room cleaned, supplies replenished. Was not asked how my stay was at any time. Breakfast was good.

Older property with narrow halls and stairs, well maintained, very clean and comfortable, would definitely stay again.

Paid£642 for single room witch had one window looking straight at another window about 6foot away room was never cleaned in the 5 nights I stopped there staff were not very helpful and rude would not stay again being a platinum member would expect better

We had a newly refurbished room which was really nice. Very modern, bright & comfortable with a very large bed. The room was clean & stocked with everything needed.A good shower. We like this hotel the staff are friendly & helpful. Being on the main street is so convenient. My only tiny disappointment was the tea served with meals..it wasnt very good tasting & looked grey the Twinings in the room kind of made up for this. Thanks for a lovely stay.

Modern bedroom

The property is old and full of character warm and inviting ,very friendly staff and our room on the top floor had been renovated and was lovely with an ultra modern bathroom which was a good contrast to the rest of the hotel

Overall, not impressed and I won’t be returning. Refuse to stay in rooms 10 to 13 unless you like your room to smell of fried food from the extractor fans.

Stayed in room 20. This room has been refurbished to a decent standard however I did not sleep very well. I could hear traffic noise and late night shouting from people passing by due to the old windows not being completely air proof. Would have given a higher rating if this could be improved, maybe add secondary double glazing? Breakfast was ok and plentiful. If you’re used to sleeping in complete silence, as I am, then maybe this is not for you

Rooms are small but well equipped. A bit hot at first but cooled off at night.

Comfortable room which was very clean. Nice bathroom with excellent shower. Breakfast was good. The only thing letting the hotel down were the staff, lots of them but more interested in chatting to each other than tending to guests. That said, John, was very professional at breakfast.

Booked late whilst on the motor knowing we had to stop. Receptionist was so helpful. Got an email confirmation with postcode to car park. Great service throughout stay. Breakfast was great. Huge selection. Lovely percolated coffee Penrith a lovely town full of independent shops. Castle a 3 min walk from hotel.

Staff, on reception, restaurant and breakfasts areas excellent

The stay was good however, there seemed to be a lack of staff during meals in the restaurant, especially when children where eating with us, taking to long.

It was our second time staying at the George Hotel, and once again, it was a wonderful experience. Most staff were courteous and helpful.

This was a very bad experience. When I am off work and wanting to enjoy a bank holiday weekend I do not want to be judged. If I want to wear my tracksuit bottoms and trainers, it is because I am comfortable. Setting aside the cleanliness for now I have to say the experience was very upsetting. When you walk into the bar and get told you have a tag on your back then a comment of P**S Heads when you are leaving. Taking my Dog for a walk, walking through reception saying' Can I give your Dog a biscuit' then referenceing to me, do you want one too? Disgusting and nasty. Going for Breakfast, to be told, you going for hair of the Dog? I know what she wants, a greasy breakfast. It was continuous every time we saw him. I cannot see a bad comment about him which means he singled me out. Is it because I am a tracksuit wearing Lesbian? The George should learn to know their audience! I am an off duty H&S/Food specialist with HR in my DNA. I will reiterate that he singled me out, basically called me a Dog ans us P** heads with tags on our backs! We were also judged from the offset, we will dress how the hell we like, we are paying customers! Let's move onto cleanliness, not good really. Dust and coffee stains on the doors and wall, dirty towels! Kettle with Water left in! A maintenance man sat on a chair constantly outside my room where I didn't feel comfortable talking. A drill left outside which was not being used! A hideout, probably! All in all, do not judge a book by it's cover

Hotel was extremely clean. Staff was were helpful and courteous. Breakfast was great. Location was perfect... in the center of town near anything and everything you could want.

The hotel is beautiful very oldie worldie, it’s not for people with difficulty in walking. There is no lift & is at the bottom of the hill from the train station. I tried from 8am to get a taxi as I could not walk up the steep hill. There are no taxis willing to take you. I was panicking, the lovely manager took me up & im so grateful. So I won’t be returning but nothing to do with the hotel just the location & no taxies.

We stayed for one night on our way home from visiting the highlands with our dog , the room was quiet small to stay in , the breakfast was very tasty where you helped yourself to continental style plus you can have a cooked breakfast if required which was included in the stay, staff was friendly and helpful , the location is perfect to have a stroll round Penrith , plenty of places to eat and drink, as this is just off the motorway Penrith is busy with traffic, with the hotel on the road, we thought when we slept you would hear this but you don’t.

Very enjoyable and handy for shops and transport

This hotel is centrally located making it easy for us to have a quick look around the town. We only stayed overnight on our way down from Scotland and would certainly stay again

Convenient to train and bus routes for the Lakes. Excellent service from the staff. Good freshly cooked breakfast and standard pub food in the evening. Could however hear people in neighbouring rooms and corridor.

Good value accommodation in the centre of town within walking distance of the station. Nothing fancy, just providing the essentials for bed and breakfast.

Fabulous deluxe room. Great food in a warm and friendly atmosphere. Lovely breakfast. Stay regularly on a trip through the lakes.

Business trip to Cumbria. Comfortable room, but hotel needs a good spruce up. Food and breakfast was underwhelming for this main hotel.

We have stayed at this hotel several times previously. It looks quite dated but the service is very good and welcoming, the room was good (bathroom especially) a good welcome is assured, and breakfast was excellent as always.

Food was very good - biggest gammon steak I’ve had in a long time.

We liked the area and convenience to the cute surrounding town. We liked the room we had and the bathroom was quite nice with lots of hot water. We had dinner at the restaurant in the hotel and it was really bad. My sister ordered potatoes and they were not fully cooked and were hard and not roasted as the waitress said but boiled. When we told the other waiter he said that's how they are.

The staff were helpful the food was poor and very expensive ( pay extra for cappuccino at breakfast) .Buffet breakfast very poor worthy of the most basic chain travel hotels . Hotel took me back 30 years to the early 90’s
