Very nice staff. Spacious and clean room. Did not eat at the hotel so can’t speak to food options. This is a very old building with a need for some exterior attention but the interior and staff make it well worth the visit.

While the outside of the property is a little tired and in need of some work the inside is lovely and the rooms are great. We had a false start in the first room which was not fully made up but the replacement room was fabulous and very functional and comfortable. The one team member did check in, bar and restaurant with ease and we were not left waiting for any service. Food was well priced and tasty and arrived quickly and overall we really liked our quick overnight. Breakfast was good though a little skinny on the non hot food side. Prices were very fair and would definitely stay again.

Lovely room and view of the gardens. The upstairs room occupant's movements sometimes disturbed the peace and quiet, but I guess that's a common problem. We didn't dine at the hotel as the serving times didn't suit us, but I have to say that the bar seemed to be somewhat "abandoned" later on in the evening. When I attempted to get a drink about 10pm I was basically told all the pumps were shut off. This is not what I would expect from a hotel of this size, and it was unfortunately a big mark-down for the place. Otherwise, we had a comfortable and enjoyable 3-night stay. The town of Cleator has absolutely NOTHING in it, but Cleator Moor, just up the road, offers a couple of shops and takeaways, but seemingly only one pub that was open. St Bees and Ennerdale Water are very close, but a car would appear to be essential while staying here. (There was a bus service, but I didn't see a single bus while we were there!)

Mixed review, great service at the restaurant and at breakfast, check in rushed. The property and grounds are grand but all is tired and dated. The rool balcony doir was open by a centimetre letting in a heavy draft and wind noise, cobwebs and missing lightbulbs evident I also question the safety of the hardwired extension lead in room 208 bellw the kettle. Lovely building and setting but very old and dated with some areas requiring overdue maintenance. Room was tired, old, tv would not work, drafty windows, blocked plug hole, not the cleanest room. Just needs massive overhaul. Dinner ok, breakfast missed as I had to leave, takeout options limited, cant really say any other than ok for a night but that is it, good parking.

The rooms were so dirty, Its like entering a once verry nice house. But the moment you enter the room it smells duff and diguisting. The rooms are weird when you enter you immidiatly go down a bunch of stairs. The bathroom looks like it hasnt been cleaned in centuries and the tiles of the floor are lose. My bed had a blood stain from someone on the blanket witch was disguisting. Dont recommend staying here unless you absolutely have to!!! Personel was nice tho

Terrible place i am afraid to say. Run down inside and out (only nice area is the bar) exterior almost looks derelict, rooms and other areas shabby dirty and altogether grim. Food expensive and average at best. Fire alarm went off twice late at night and early morning. Room leading to garden no key and lock open, window catches useless. Shower broken. Carpets filthy but luckily bedding clean although on lumpyist mattress I have ever slept on Breakfast average. Only plus was the lady on reception when we arrived, working on her own doing everything (Reception, Restaurant,Bar) she deserves to work in a much better place. This hotel has a grand name and maybe history but is no longer the case.

Very friendly and welcoming staff were the highlight. Very poor temperature control on the shower meant that even at the coldest setting it was too hot for comfort. The meal was acceptable, but not a strength. Tasty, but pork was tough. Generally, although very clean, the hotel looks tired.

Enjoyed my 3 night stay overall, staff were all lovely and room was a good size. Property is dated but this is reflected in the price. Main problem as I was there on business was lack of wifi. It didn't work in my room or the bar and was very patchy in other areas, which I was told was normal. The window frames in my room were rotten with water coming in, noisy plumbing system. No hairdryer in my room although may have been available from reception, I didn't ask. Decent breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was only served until 9 am which I felt was a little early for a weekend.

We stayed just 1 night. Nice grounds in which to sit and have a drink in the sunshine. Good English cooked breakfast (with vegetarian option). Very quiet hotel. We stayed in the Ennerdale suite, which has a very comfy 4 poster bed. The one thing that spoilt the stay was the unfathomable plumbing. There seemed to be no water coming out of the sink hot tap. Whilst water came from the cold tap with a 3/4 turn we later discovered it took 4 full 360 degree rotations for water to start flowing. And it was a mystery how to get hot water from the shower. The temperature dial seemed to be stuck on cold. The bath was fine, however.

This was a lovely place with wonderful staff. The dinner was superb. My only reason for a 4 rating and not 5 is because the bed I had was old with mattress springs poking me. I had to take the duvet and put half of it under me. I can't speak for the other beds in the building, but mine was definitely not comfortable.

Very friendly and welcoming staff were the highlight. Very poor temperature control on the shower meant that even at the coldest setting it was too hot for comfort. The meal was acceptable, but not a strength. Tasty, but pork was tough. Generally, although very clean, the hotel looks tired.

I booked an overnight room - previous occupant had been smoking and very strong odour - manager immediately moved me to another room - lovely comfortable bed & refreshing sleep.

While the outside of the property is a little tired and in need of some work the inside is lovely and the rooms are great. We had a false start in the first room which was not fully made up but the replacement room was fabulous and very functional and comfortable. The one team member did check in, bar and restaurant with ease and we were not left waiting for any service. Food was well priced and tasty and arrived quickly and overall we really liked our quick overnight. Breakfast was good though a little skinny on the non hot food side. Prices were very fair and would definitely stay again.

Mixed review, great service at the restaurant and at breakfast, check in rushed. The property and grounds are grand but all is tired and dated. The rool balcony doir was open by a centimetre letting in a heavy draft and wind noise, cobwebs and missing lightbulbs evident I also question the safety of the hardwired extension lead in room 208 bellw the kettle. For the money paid overall great property but poor comfort and value.

I guess you get what you pay for and in terms of value for money it was fine. The facilities are very 'tired' with many things due renovation or even a coat of paint. It was basically fine other than the shower that was very poor. Food was fine and the staff were generally very pleasant and helpful.

We stayed just 1 night. Nice grounds in which to sit and have a drink in the sunshine. Good English cooked breakfast (with vegetarian option). Very quiet hotel. We stayed in the Ennerdale suite, which has a very comfy 4 poster bed. The one thing that spoilt the stay was the unfathomable plumbing. There seemed to be no water coming out of the sink hot tap. Whilst water came from the cold tap with a 3/4 turn we later discovered it took 4 full 360 degree rotations for water to start flowing. And it was a mystery how to get hot water from the shower. The temperature dial seemed to be stuck on cold. The bath was fine, however.

Lovely room and view of the gardens. The upstairs room occupant's movements sometimes disturbed the peace and quiet, but I guess that's a common problem. We didn't dine at the hotel as the serving times didn't suit us, but I have to say that the bar seemed to be somewhat "abandoned" later on in the evening. When I attempted to get a drink about 10pm I was basically told all the pumps were shut off. This is not what I would expect from a hotel of this size, and it was unfortunately a big mark-down for the place. Otherwise, we had a comfortable and enjoyable 3-night stay. The town of Cleator has absolutely NOTHING in it, but Cleator Moor, just up the road, offers a couple of shops and takeaways, but seemingly only one pub that was open. St Bees and Ennerdale Water are very close, but a car would appear to be essential while staying here. (There was a bus service, but I didn't see a single bus while we were there!)

This was a lovely place with wonderful staff. The dinner was superb. My only reason for a 4 rating and not 5 is because the bed I had was old with mattress springs poking me. I had to take the duvet and put half of it under me. I can't speak for the other beds in the building, but mine was definitely not comfortable.

For me having grown up in a rambling house in the North of England in the 1960s this was a trip down memory lane. Lovely grounds and friendly staff. Dinner and breakfast both very good. Rustic but charming

Lovely building and setting but very old and dated with some areas requiring overdue maintenance. Room was tired, old, tv would not work, drafty windows, blocked plug hole, not the cleanest room. Just needs massive overhaul. Dinner ok, breakfast missed as I had to leave, takeout options limited, cant really say any other than ok for a night but that is it, good parking.

Upon arrival there was a function going on. Unfortunately they clearly had not taken into account the amount of alcohol that would be consumed. Drunk people all over the place at 5pm. Throwing cigarette ends all over the place outside. No lager left at the bar in the evening. Rooms need a deep clean and beds are in need of replacing. Building needs a good scrub and repainted outside. Could not fault the staff who were massively overworked on the Sunday. Food was good and breakfast had a good choice.

Beautiful listed building under new ownership and are navigating the complexities of future development. If you want a hotel with character that is clean, with good food, and friendly staff, this is it. It’s cosy, comfortable, peaceful and somewhere to relax. Highly recommended.

Honestly think this was one of the worst hotels I've stayed in. There's dated..and then there's just disgusting. Before I even got in the room, the door handle was falling off and not very secure. The sofa, carpets and curtains had stains on them. I found a huge hair in the bathroom so clearly hadn't been cleaned properly. Woke up numerous times during the night due to the loud noises coming from the bathroom. This hotel needs a serious renovation because the prices they are charging are ridiculous!
