We loved the quaint hotel and the location was perfect! The courtyard was so perfect to just hang out with our family in another room. Would definitely stay there again! The rooms were a little small and there were stairs to climb but not a deal breaker! Very clean!

The staff were great. Very accommodating and friendly. This is an older hotel, right on the Main Street where the restaurants and shops are. Right across from the beach. Very convenient. Our room was very small and no view, just the patio area. The room was cute and very clean. They said breakfast was included which were pastries, yogurt and coffee. It was pricey for what we got but I guess it’s about the location. What we didn’t like was to get to the office and rooms you had to go up two flights of stairs, there wasn’t an elevator. If someone is in a wheel chair or crutches, this isn’t the place for you.

Beach front location in Avalon, Catalina Island. Only a few minutes walk from the ferry terminal. Very convenient! The best part of our stay was Daniel in the office. So kind and accommodating, great customer service, very friendly and knowledgeable. Continental breakfast items are available at 7AM. Our room was just around the corner from the breakfast location and it was a little noisy before 7AM. We were also directly across from the luggage hold area which was also a bit noisy. In future I would request a room farther from the office because of the noise level. The 2 flights of stairs (only access from street level) are steep and treacherous with heavy luggage. If you are a person with a disability, you might prefer another hotel. All those things aside, we enjoyed our stay. Especially the luggage hold option, free water, and restroom availability after we checked out, before ferry departure.

The hotel is in a great area, and had friendly staff. My main complaint is about the fact that there is no elevator or ramp to get to the hotel. You have to climb approximately 50 steps to get the everything and of you are on a wheelchair, walker or a stroller it will be almost impossible to get to your room.

Room was clean and hotel was right on the beach, but it was a very small, expensive room (no beach view) and we had to walk up many stairs (no elevator) and with luggage it wasn’t easy. The staff was excellent and they even called us to let us know we could check in early so that was unexpectedly nice. The hotel is old and the rooms need to be remodeled

We had a good stay at the hotel. It was clean and the decor was as pictured. Our stay was mostly quiet, though our room was next to the ice maker, luggage shelves and front office, so we could hear the ice machine and when people were congregating in the mornings for breakfast, check out, etc. The amenities were as expected except there was no microwave. There was a fridge and a coffee maker. The bed was decent but a bit too soft for me. The breakfast was grab and go items-- we saw yogurt and danishes, but we may have missed some options due to sleeping in. There is no elevator and all the rooms are upstairs, so that is something to consider before booking. They have shelves to stow your luggage if you would like to spend more time on the island after check out. They also provided beach towels. We had a great stay and would recommend this place with the disclaimers mentioned above :).

This hotel was perfect, the rooms, while small, were very clean. The hotel is old but well kept. You do have to carry your luggage up two flights of stairs. The people are wonderful and I would highly recommend this place.

The room was filthy, could hear everything through the walls. There was no way to actually get to the hotel on a golf cart, we had to carry all of our bags not only to the middle of the town, but up two flights of steep stairs because there was not an elevator, that should have been made very clear before we made the reservation, not after

The room we stayed in 213 had a weird mildew smell and it was right by the vending and ice machines, which made noise all night. It was also annoying that we had to check out an iron and ironing board by leaving our ID. I wouldn’t recommend staying here unless other rooms are more spaces and less noisy. Also, the wifi didn’t work.

We love the hotel location , especially how close it is to the port, and how close it is to all the fun activities. The staff was also very helpful and friendly and the rooms were very clean and cozy.

The rooms are small, but they are clean and tidy, and the bed was comfortable. The common area outside area was comfortable sunny had comfy chairs and table. The people were very nice accommodating trustworthy. In general, it was a good experience and well worth the money, considering the cost of in Avalon

Loved it! The front desk receptionist who checked us in was amazing, he gave us many recommendations and greeted us each time we walked into the hotel! Although the room was older, it was VERY clean, quiet and comfortable. Location was perfect! My only critique is the wifi really didn’t work most of our stay and the TV was very small with cable that would frequently disconnect. Overall, would absolutely stay here again!

I at first was a little shocked about the size of the room and bathroom especially, my bf is 6’2 and it was very small for him to move around or even use the restroom also the walls are a little thinner then liked so just please keep that in mind !! Stay was great and ac blows nice cold air the staff is great and they have a small breakfast in the morningg

Hotel was very quiet, it was the off season. My wife and I began to have electrical problems our 1st night. We were told when we checked in to use a small space heater since the room HVAC was not working. This space heater started tripping the circuit breakers for our room. It was very cold and we did not know this had happened. It was eventually fixed, but left not so good thoughts about the hotel.

Rm #1 was very outdated, tiny bathroom and very small room. We asked to be moved. They were full first night but moved us the second night. Rm #2 was better. Same outdated furniture, the bathroom was a bit bigger. The continental breakfast was not much. No ocean views, shops were very close. We would not stay there again.

Not the newest hotel, but updated and very well maintained, and very clean. The staff is very friendly, and the location is great. We had an ocean view room, which was great. The only caution is that you then also get the noise from people walking right by your window, and it goes on late into the night. If that bothers you, get one of the garden view rooms. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

This was the tiniest and most outdated hotel I've ever stayed in. The staff was great, but the hotel room was bad! There were missing bulbs, the bathroom door didn't close unless it was lifted. I could barely fit into the shower (I am 5'8) and the tiny shower was so dark we had to prop the door open slightly. The bed was waaay too soft and the decor was from the 70s or 80s. The only reason we didn't check into a nicer hotel was we didn't want to lose the one night stay which is the penalty for late cancelation.

We stayed 3 nights in an oceanfront king for my wife's birthday celebration. Great place! Room was nice, clean, and comfortable. It is a little on the smaller side, but it is a vintage venue and they make good use of the space. Well laid out for a couple. Staff was friendly and helpful. View was amazing, looking out over the water and harbor. This is right in the middle of everything, so the sounds of music and people were pretty constant from around 9:00 AM until 10:00 or 11:00 at night. We didn't actually mind it, though. The sound of the waves on the shore could also be heard above the rest of the revelry, so the ambiance was still beautiful. And, once the din of people tapered off at night, all that was left was the repeating waves throughout the night. Very relaxing. We would definitely go back again.

Small and efficient room just what we needed prior to starting our biking trip of the island. The office staff were extremely helpful and we appreciated the assistance in being able to bring our bikes into courtyard. Thank you for a comfortable stay !

We got there 8pm and office was closed and had to call a number. Had to call again 10 minutes later and she finally replied coming out of one of the rooms and she was not happy. She was rude, did not smile and seemed irritated we checked in at 8pm. For $330/night you would think this hotel would have a receptionist until at least midnight or have at least a nice girl. This experience set the mood for our stay in the hotel. Never will I go to this hotel again. Atwater hotel around the corner is much MUCH nicer for about the same price.

We loved the location of this property. The room are perfectly adequate and the water was hot. One major problem was that the after hours phone number was not working. When our kids locked us out of the room, we had to search for someone who could call the people working. It turns out they stay there and one can just bang loudly on the door to try to get their attention. But we did not know this for a few hours. Otherwise, this hotel is good as a home base for exploring Avalon.

The service at this hotel is what makes it 5 stars. All the staff are pleasant and were amazingly helpful when our originally scheduled ferry was canceled. Our room didn’t have a view, had an awkward amount of furniture (highly recommend removing the extra chair so there’s a place for luggage - we stored it above the fridge to make space), and was a little dated. But it served its purpose and the AC worked great so no complaints :-). SUPER convenient to get to anywhere in Avalon by walking.

Daniel (front desk) was the best host! He called us the night before to pre-order breakfast...which was unexpected and awesome...he was well informed with regards to dining and breakfast facilities...he was very attentive and made the experience feel more than what we payed for! Great experience at MacRae Hotel!

For our first visit on Catalina Island, this property was perfectly located in the center of town on the waterfront. We had a room with a waterfront view that was perfect to wake up to every morning. It was a relatively short and enjoyable walk from the boat landing to the hotel. You can't beat the weather on the island. We were there in November and needed a break from the rain in Portland, Or. We would definitely look at this property again for our next visit.

Location Location Location.......this hotel was so convenient being ocean front, we kept going in and out of our room during our stay so it literally saved us so much time and money for transportation. Will definitely be staying here my next visit.

Beach front location in Avalon, Catalina Island. Only a few minutes walk from the ferry terminal. Very convenient! The best part of our stay was Daniel in the office. So kind and accommodating, great customer service, very friendly and knowledgeable. Continental breakfast items are available at 7AM. Our room was just around the corner from the breakfast location and it was a little noisy before 7AM. We were also directly across from the luggage hold area which was also a bit noisy. In future I would request a room farther from the office because of the noise level. The 2 flights of stairs (only access from street level) are steep and treacherous with heavy luggage. If you are a person with a disability, you might prefer another hotel. All those things aside, we enjoyed our stay. Especially the luggage hold option, free water, and restroom availability after we checked out, before ferry departure.

We loved: the easy access of the place- the welcoming staff-the cleanliness- THE VIEW from our room- the shower and products-complimentary breakfast- holding luggage before and after check in- option to shower after check out... One heads up for others: if you have an ocean view room,you are next to a bar so it is quite loud during the night til the bar closes- bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

Not the newest hotel, but updated and very well maintained, and very clean. The staff is very friendly, and the location is great. We had an ocean view room, which was great. The only caution is that you then also get the noise from people walking right by your window, and it goes on late into the night. If that bothers you, get one of the garden view rooms. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

For a 100 year old plus Hotel pleasantly "Surfprized" Clean neat with a few modern touches ..Daniel ( spellin\') front desk was very professional /helpful..Mural in room was a nice touch ... Vanity in bathroom on the cheap side ..Vintage Shower tile was cool..the "continental breakfast" was skimpy.. mini muffin\'s O.J . coffee.. No fruit no cereal etc. ...wish they had ocean view rooms with two beds..Overall would stay again..:)

I stayed at the Hotel Mac Rae for the Avalon 50k trail race. Check in was super easy, and the staff even got up extra early to make sure the runners had breakfast and coffee. Best of all, they even let us use a shower after the race. I will absolutely be staying here the next time I’m in Catalina!

Little old property. But, right in front of beach all almost all attractions, restaurants, transportations and shoppings. Lack of hot breakfast, but you have coffee, juice and muffins. But great thing was you have drinking water dispenser in front of office with ice machine in front of office. Water is expensive in Catalina and even restaurants charge for that.

Excellent location, with rooms around a quiet courtyard above the waterfront. The rooms have everything you need - coffee, fridge, etc. The staff are friendly and helpful. The continental breakfast (pastries, yogurt, OJ) was a nice bonus.

Catalina Island is lovely and this beautiful hotel is placed right in the center of it! Our room overlooked the ocean and was fairly spacious. The greatest benefit however is definitely the location! You can walk to any restaurant, shop, or excursion from this hotel! The staff is also very kind and helpful. They even allow you to drop off your luggage before check in. The ONLY complaint I could have is that their included breakfast is very basic- yogurt, some fruit, coffee, and a croissant.

We were there with a beach front view room for all of Memorial Day weekend. It was GREAT. Staff was amazing, they let us put our luggage away before and after check in. Only thing is the continental breakfast is literally only a lil’ plate of pastries but they are yummy!

I really liked how the people at the front desk were very friendly. Explained everything of our stay, how our room keys would work,etc. I liked how they had a free breakfast during our stay. Not a whole breakfast station but it had pastries, fruit, coffee, juice and yogurt. Very nice and well stocked. Clean room and comfy bed. I'll return to this hotel for sure.

Absolutely perfect location right on the water, lots of great food around and lots of activities within walking distance. Lovely staff and super clean rooms, and a pretty courtyard. Highly recommend and will be coming back again.

Catalina Island offers a charming small property for a comfortable stay. The room was clean, and the friendly staff made us feel right at home. Accessing the hotel is a bit of a walk, as it’s located on the second floor and doesn’t have an elevator. However, the location is convenient, situated in the heart of the main island.
