Wonderful stay at Arenal Observatory Lodge. Our only disappointment was not being able to see the volcano in its entirety due to stubborn low hanging clouds. It’s a beautiful property with lots to see for nature lovers and bird watchers. Bring rain gear even if it is supposed to he the dry season. Don't miss The Nest tower.

Yes, Volcano park entrance is nearby. But there is no need for a national park as you have a front stage view of the volcano, 11 km of trails, access to guides, a waterfall, hanging bridges, and wildlife! We only needed to leave to access the hot springs. Otherwise this is paradise! tours

Loved the Arenal Volcano Lodge! Feels similar to staying in the National Park lodges in Yellowstone or Glacier. Although it is a bit of a drive, it is much less touristy than La Fortuna hotels. Extensive grounds with lots of wildlife and birds, observation tower, nature walks with knowledgeable guide etc. Rooms were very nice with balcony. Dining was quite good which was important give the distance to other restaurants. Staff was very professional and friendly. Highly recommend!

You're surrounded by stunning views and beautiful animals. The trails on the grounds provide a variety of difficulty and experiences. The rooms are huge, though lack of AC and bugs getting through screens can be a minor issue. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Bring a good camera and binoculars because you'll be enjoying the views a great deal. Also, the pool and jet tub were relaxing and enjoyable. The spa was wonderful and affordable.

Absolutely wonderful place to stay in the Arenal Volcano area. We were there for five nights and enjoyed seeing many species of birds both from their large observation deck and on the birding walk with Nestor and the Nature walks with Christian. The view of the volcano and lovely Arenal Lake is magnificent! Also saw several cute and friendly coatis and a spider monkey mama cuddling her baby up in the trees. The staff, though, is the BEST part of staying here! They are all friendly, attentive and accommodating to your wishes or needs. Can't say enough good things about this aspect of the hotel! Muchas gracias por la Pura Vida!!!

3 night stay Und of February with 2 adults and 3 boys under 12. This place was a Peacful & Serine Jungle Stay. This property exceededed expectations. From gaming rooms, pool, hot tub, dining. Walk right out to the trails with a short drive to Lafortuna. We Hiked, did horseback riding, ziplines and swam waterfalls. We do recommend rental car. Down side is there is No AC but evening are cool in the jungel and a ceiling fan helps. Also no mini fridge or ice machines we had to get it from the dining facility. This place is well kept with a natural feel. Definitely recommend.

Absolutely beautiful property with tons to do within the property. Well maintained trails perfect for beginners. The staff was very professional and pleasant. Free activities in the lodge were great, especially the guided hike with their very knowledgeable guide. Beautiful surrounding towns. The free breakfast at the restaurant on site was very good. Lunch and dinner on site were expensive so we drove about 10-15 minutes off property and there were tons of options. We booked an economy room in the casona with a shared restroom and it was lovely. Will definitely return.

This hotel is beautiful and the location makes you feel like you are living in a rainforest. The free breakfast was a nice touch each morning. The dining room was large and the dining staff was very friendly. We booked a room with a balcony and that was so relaxing!!! The rooms were very nice and the bathrooms were very clean. The only drawback was the back roads getting to this hotel. The potholes were a nightmare!!!

The property was stunning. Gorgeous views of lake, mountains and volcano. Beautifully kept grounds . The room itself as very cool design . Simple but had an entire glass wall overlooking the most stunning view . There were a few things that we didn’t like . The view was beautiful and there are very fun activities to do inside the property. The upside down is that the rooms don’t have refrigerator and air conditioning, fortunately we stayed only one night and it wasn’t too hot that night. Also the shower drain was clogged. The service at the lobby was just ok. They can do better. The food at the restaurant was good and the service at the restaurant also very good.

This place was beautiful. We stayed in the main house with shared bathrooms. Everything was clean, and the views were amazing. The lodge has a really great restaurant, and breakfast is included. We were slightly concerned about not having A/C, but the nights and mornings were cool enough. We would definitely stay here again. The drive up here was long, but worth it. I was expecting it to be closer to La Fortuna, and was surprised it was about 20 minutes away.

The location is amazing. We saw so much wildlife and lots of great hiking trails including waterfalls. We loved the frog pond. We went at night and heard all the croaking and saw lots of frogs including a few red eye tree frogs. The free tour they provide guests in the mornings was awesome. The only thing my family didn’t like was no AC in the rooms. The restaurant provided great free breakfast. We ate at the same place for dinner and found it was way overpriced and not great quality. Overall the stay was great and we would recommend it.

Amazing views of the now inactive volcano, with plenty of easy hiking routes around your room, since the hotel is situated within the national park. A birder’s paradise, with a small museum about the volcano and the history of the area. We had a birding tour booked through the hotel with Raúl Obregón, whom we highly, highly recommend! Raúl is passionate about birds, knows their habits, and will share his passion with you. The room is comfortable, though not luxurious. WiFi is only available on/next to the balcony and in common areas. Be aware that to maximize ventilation the area near the ceiling is only screened, so you can hear everyone in the rooms around you. But the trade off of being immersed in nature is worth it. The onsite restaurant serves pretty good food, although for variety you may want to leave a few times during your stay. Be aware that the road up to the hotel does wash out, so you may be in for a rough (but short) ride up from the main road until you reach the entrance gate.

we loved the property . gorgeous lanscape and views . pleasant personnel , felt very safe. cabins are very nice designed . walls are very thin and you can hear all the wildlife outside and the rain . didnt mind that and fortunately it was very cool at night so we werent hot (no AC). the doors werent well sealed so we did have several spiders coming in but nithing major.

Our stay at Arenal Observatory Lodge was incredible! The staff was so friendly, attentive, and helpful. Our room was perfect for a friend trip - it was large and comfortable, with plenty of space to put our things. The private patio was incredible - we woke up to birdsong, howler monkeys, and hummingbirds flitting around every morning. I was a little concerned about the lack of air conditioning, but the ceiling fan made staying cool at night a breeze. It was wonderful to be able to walk out of our room and immediately hit the trails, head to the main reception area to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee and watch the birds and monkeys, or go swim in the pool. Of all the places we stayed during our 10 day trip, this was our favorite by far!

So the trails and park are beautiful and really well maintained and walkable. The place is worth it for that but do not eat there. The food was truly awful. The desk service was also not great, we had a broken window the whole stay and the staff never did anything about it and did not appear to care at all when we told them. Said they would fix it next day but never did anything, we mentioned it again next day still nothing. We stayed in the casonas which are rooms with shared bathrooms, they were not bad but be warned there is no A/C and no mini fridge so dont bring stuff that can melt (sad for those doing chocolate tours) and they give you one bath mat for each bathroom each day so if its been used it kind of bummer. Otherwise they were clean and comfortable. Wish they had better rooms for the price but again trails and views of wildlife are incredible and unparalleled. Perhaps just get the day pass and skip the hotel if you wanna visit.

We had the most amazing stay, the whole place is absolutely stunning, you can do a much or as little as you like, the walking trails are full of wildlife, the huge hot tub is fab as is the pool, our room was immaculate and huge and the dining area was really good also, but for me it was the staff, they we're all fantastic, nothing was to much trouble (especially the restaurant staff 👌)..this truly is a stunning property so relaxing to sit and watch the humming birds from our terrace, thank you AOL we will be back!!!

Wonderful place, up close to volcano, beautiful grounds, flowers and birds everywhere. Pictures don't do it justice. Staff all extremely helpful, we had a flat tire the last day of our trip and had a flight to catch - one staff member took us to an air pump on site, but then we discovered the nail in the tire, so another staff member helped us put on the spare and we managed to make our flight! So very grateful! Food delicious at the restaurant as well. Hope to come back here some day.

Staff were very knowledgeable about flora and fauna in park. Hotel policies were Eco-friendly. Decor in room and hotel was pleasant; blends well with forest. Many improved walking trails on grounds. An amazing hidden gem! We almost gave up driving to this hotel due to the road conditions. But we are so glad we didn’t. Amazing trails, waterfall and breathtaking views of Arenal Volcano! Great dining experience for dinner. Prices are on par with US. Free breakfast was also amazing. Front desk personnel could be friendlier but maybe Carlos was having a rough day. He is probably better suited for a non customer facing role.

If you are in Costa Rica to be close to nature, Arenal Observatory Lodge is the place to be. The views of the volcano are unbeatable and the massive grounds are teaming with wildlife--birds, coati, monkeys, reptiles. The many on-site trails are beautiful and well kept, and the optional guided tours are great. We did a guided night tour and were amazed by the wildlife we saw, all of which we never would have noticed without the guide. We ate at the restaurant for many of our meals and enjoyed everything, and the staff is extremely friendly. As with many places in Costa Rica, there was no air conditioning in the rooms, but this was not a problem for us in late April/early May and the fan did the trick. I'll miss this place! (PS, don't be alarmed by the long dirt road on the drive in, the end result is worth it.)

It has a spectacular view. The grounds are gorgeous. The staff very friendly. Food very good. And the view!! Lovely walking trails and activities. We will be back! The only problem is that it is remote on a mountain. If you have a car, no problem. If you need transportation to La Fortuna it gets pricey.

My family and I loved the grounds- specifically picked this hotel for its natural surroundings. Beautiful property and large, so great for hiking. It is a bit more remote though and there is only one hotel restaurant but it was very good- it was just a bit pricey. We did not leave the hotel after it got dark (6pm) because the road conditions are not that great so our only real choice for dinner was at the hotel. Overall still an excellent stay.

Road which leads to the observatory lodge was horrible. I was driving at night around 9 pm and it was pitch dark, the last 4 km was a pstch with gravel road and god forbid anything goes wrong you are on your own.. no resque wiil be available

A friend and I stayed here for a week on a birding trip to Costa Rica. We found most aspects of AOL to be good, but we really disliked our restaurant experience. I have food allergies and gave the staff a translated card explaining what I can and cannot eat. This approach worked well in every other place we stayed, but not at AOL. I was provided with a meal that I was told the next night was not appropriate for my diet. So why did they give me that meal the first night? The exact same thing happened another night. On yet another day I ordered hummus with gluten free bread, only to find that the bread was still frozen. And yet again on another day, I ordered hummus with gluten free bread, only to discover that the bread on my plate was not gluten free. For an establishment that advertises their high quality restaurant and high prices, this is just not acceptable. As you can imagine, by the time I left after a week, I was quite ill.

Our stay was very pleasant, the hotel is on beautiful grounds, we arrived late at night , a portion the road leading to the hotel is not paved, breakfast was superb, you can have both the open buffet and a choice to order from their menu. We ended up having dinner 2 nights at the hotel and those were excellent as well. Very helpful staff that go above and beyond, Sergio was very helpful with his recommendations and directions. Lots of hummingbirds and wildlife that you can experience from your room. No AC but the ceiling fan was sufficient to keep up feeling comfortable. Would love to go again.

The location is great in the heart of the forest with trails all around. We booked a Standard Room which was located a short but steep walk away from the main building. The room was clean and a good size. The large terrace had a view of the lake but far better was the hummingbird that lived in the bush right in front and the coati roaming around the garden. Wildlife is everywhere here. We enjoyed a free guided day tour and a guided night tour. We saw an anteater, howler monkeys, bespectacled owls, frogs, snakes and all sorts of birds. The only thing that let this hotel down was the food. The staff in the restaurant but the food itself was not great and dinner options were very limited.

Wonderful spot to explore the cloud forest around Arenal volcano. Great trails for nature lovers with lots of birds and monkeys. Great breakfast buffet. However, the dinner options were a little disappointing and pricey.

We absolutely LOVED our stay at the Lodge! Not only was the view amazing from every angle including our balcony, but also the service was OUTSTANDING! Everyone was so kind. And the restaurant food was to die for!! Best filet mignon I've ever had - not kidding! Mr. Howard at the restaurant was also wonderful, as well as the waiters, including Enrique. What a lovely experience. We'll definitely be staying there when we visit CR again without a doubt!!

Absolutely beautiful property with tons to do within the property. Well maintained trails perfect for beginners. The staff was very professional and pleasant. Free activities in the lodge were great, especially the guided hike with their very knowledgeable guide. Beautiful surrounding towns. The free breakfast at the restaurant on site was very good. Lunch and dinner on site were expensive so we drove about 10-15 minutes off property and there were tons of options. We booked an economy room in the casona with a shared restroom and it was lovely. Will definitely return.
