Occidental Tucancún - All Inclusive

Too many stairs, up, down, up, down, up and down. Food was ok, nothing special. Staff was friendly and helpful. Room was not ready at check-in time

You get what you pay for. I arrived at 3:30pm & didn't get into my room until 6:30. One person at front desk. No map of property or explanation of where restaurants were, towels for pools or any other services provided. I walked around until I figured it out & asked other guests. Concierge brought me to the elevator...I've always been brought up to the room & shown basic functions of room. Air conditioner was stuck at 24 celsius (74 F) no matter what it was set at (I set much lower & temps never lowered). Spacious room with comfy beds. Rooms were never refreshed or restocked until I called front desk, which was in the evening. Housekeeping was so non-existant until I complained to the manager. The last day my room was refreshed without having to call front desk--too late. Beautiful beach with no palapas, umbrellas or shade. Pool area umbrellas were broken-one stayed open. No one was around to assist. Food looked beautiful but was bland & flavorless. Anything other than buffet needed reservations which took forever because they were also selling tours at same desk. I've stayed at other Barcelos and expected similar quality. Each Barcelo must operate on different managerial programs and this one was very disappointing & lacking. Totally understaffed housekeeping & front desk really makes for a substandard experience. Spend your money elsewhere.

The property has a lot of stairs, not ideal for older couple. The elevator to our floor did not work properly. You always had to push the up button in order to get the elevator to come to your floor. The buffet restaurant was very bland foods. The pools needed repair, lots of missing pool tiles. The air conditioner did not cool our room, it took 2 days for customer service trying to fix it and then give us another room.

I stayed at the Occidental Tucancún for five days, and overall, the experience left a lot to be desired. Food: Needs improvement. The buffet food was consistently lukewarm and lacked flavor. Most dishes tasted old and under-seasoned. I highly recommend making reservations at the Mexican restaurant onsite—it’s the best option available. However, be prepared to line up early (around 7 a.m.) just to secure a spot. It’s unfortunate that you have to spend part of your vacation standing in line just to get a decent meal. Room: Needs improvement. My friend’s first-floor room had roaches, and her balcony was taped off due to visible decay on the level above. In my room, there was no screen on the balcony door, which felt like a safety issue, especially for families with children. When I moved the wall mirror, the blow dryer fixture actually fell out of the wall! The hot water temperature also fluctuated drastically—from lukewarm to scalding in seconds. On top of that, my room key deactivated daily, requiring frequent trips to the front desk. Service: The service was inconsistent. In the restaurants, there were only two servers handling the entire dining area, so drinks often went unfilled—we ended up getting our own several times. The timeshare staff were also very aggressive, which made it difficult to relax and enjoy the resort. Spa: Excellent. The one bright spot of my stay. We booked massages, and they were fantastic—professional, relaxing, and worth every penny.

My family and I had a great time at this resort. We loved the dining options as well as the food. Our room was very clean and cold AC. The staff was very friendly and helpful, we also enjoyed the daily activities at the pool and the entertainment in the evening was enjoyable. A great family vacation.

The staff was fantastic, the property itself is not I repeat is not ADA compliant. Not all of the facilities were accessible because of the stairs with no ramps for a Mobility scooter sales company. The adult pool had 10 steps to it. Only the kitty pool was accessible. Specialty restaurants are good the buffets however we’re just awful

They were having issues with the elevator in the tower we were in so we had to use the service elevator 90%of tje time

Mini bar was stocked with some free refreshments. TV only had two English channels both of which were news. Balcony and view in 2004 was great! One of my biggest pet peeves is the restaurant reservations; as I often travel solo and don’t know when exactly I’ll arrive to the hotel making reservations is impossible and to turn a patron away when you have open tables simply because of a reservation is silly. I’m also one person so it’s not like I’m going to sit there all night. The buffet option that didn’t require a reservation had salad, some noodles and some cold salads (think pasta salads and chicken salad) which wasn’t particularly appetizing or filling. The poolside bar only had one bartender who would randomly leave so drinks took some time. The pool was nice. There are some loungers IN the pool. The aerobics were fun. The music was good. Don’t have any issue with finding seats or people saving seats. Staff at the lobby bar was good. They have some snacks out throughout the day. There is an MTS rep onsite; if you do their shuttle it’s super convenient.

The property rooms need some serious update. We stayed in 5038, the mattress and blanket smelled like urine (not the sheets they were changed every day with EXCELLENT cleaning personnel). The patio door was very difficult to open, the balcony curtain lining was covered in black mold, walls have mold too and needed to be repainted a long time ago. The sink outside bathroom was clogged and the faucet was lose. The bathroom was moldy too with black spots all over walls and ceiling. Safe worked great. Air conditioning was working great. Fridge was always restocked, but for some reason on second day stopped cooling. The lobby was ok, bars were great very attentive bar tenders, food tasted good, but not a big variety but tasted good and no one got sick.

The room had yellow caution tape all on the outside balcony, due to the building crumbling right above my room. The door handle broke off as I entered the room, literally the handle was in my hand detached from the door. The outside of the front of the room was flooded due to the ceiling leaking, so I was walking over puddles of water as I exited the room. Reported all of theirs to front desk and housekeeping within minutes of checking in nothing was done. Went to use restroom in room and was greeted by roaches crawling everywhere. Took them 24 hours to move me to a different room.

Main pool is sweltering hot, and all pools are covered in algae. Usually when you stay at a resort you will see staff cleaning the pools in the morning and evening, this resort NEVER cleans the pools. Reservations must be made by 7am, yet they say it’s full by 7:15. You will notice while inside the restaurants they only fill not even half the tables. We paid the restaurants when they opened at 6pm to seat us and they always did. Our room was closed out everyday at noon so our keys would not work and we would have to wait in a long line to reset our card key. System is way out of date. We visit 3 different resorts 3 times a year for the past 12 years and this was by far the WORST! Bartenders were absolutely amazing tho! We are big tippers so they went above and beyond for us.. they were the stars of the show for us and really made our stay. Food at the buffet is UNEDIBLE! We all lost weight this trip. Mexico Lindo restaurant is amazing and Carlos is so kind!

The bathroom in our room was disgusting. There was mold on the ceiling and in the shower. There was also blood on the curtains. The location of the property is beautiful. However, the rooms need updating and cleaning to remove moldy conditions.

I had a wonderful stay! The hotel was beautiful, clean, and relaxing. The staff were friendly and attentive, always making sure we were comfortable. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect for a peaceful getaway. Everything went smoothly from check-in to check-out overall, a great experience. I would definitely come back again!

The hotel has a beautiful beach and view! BUT the dining offered was not the best, same food served everyday. When checked in, the room given was not properly cleaned and there were roaches in every corner you looked. We reported the incident and got switched to another room that was nice.

cons: mildew smell on dressers wonky elevator (fully got stuck with 3 other people and had to scream for help and pry the doors open until staff noticed there was no emergency button and the emergency line didn’t work. We made light of the situation so no one complained we were just glad to keep going about our day) also there was construction on the other elevator so we were using the staff elevator. some staff was standoff ish but i found a few that were real nice and friendly like Enrique. The food is average at the buffets, but the staff was nice. i went to the mexican restaurant that requires a reservation and their food was pretty good it was just slightly under salted but nothing crazy they cut access to the beach after a certain time some of the other guests were unpleasant/rude Pros: the bartenders did a great job of making us feel safe when some guy was obliviously making us uncomfortable. housekeeping did pretty good, everything was always refilled. they were all nice, we’d also get more snacks candies etc if we requested it. the views from the room was beautiful, they do have a designated smoking area that still has a nice view the beach was clean they had an adult only pool the premium lounge, where we checked in it’s air conditioned which felt nice, there was top shelf alcohol, snacks (i liked the little bagel sandwiches) fresh fruit, and a bunch of water juice sodas. check out was easy too.

The Hotel looks nice on the pictures, so does the pool and outside areas, however the rooms are outdated. The staff is not friendly, I believe it might be due to the fact that Cancun is a party zone and the staff is used to dealing with drunks or whatever, but the staff, specially the security and bellboys are rude and not friendly at all. Beware of the "free perks"they offer so they can trick you into buying a membership for a time share. This is very aggresive and they use all the possible tactics to lure you into their trap. We had to change the room due to humidity in our room. After I complained and requested a room change, they just painted over the humidity stain and we had to wait until the next day to have another room. There is a LOT of noise in the north area of the hotel due to a water treatment plant that is running 24/7 and it is very annoying and hard to get a good night sleep due to the constant noise. The reservation only restaurants are ok, however at the italian one, we had the worst pizza ever! to be honest gas station pizza is better. I would not come back again.

Service was great, very clean, and safe! We upgraded our room once we got there and the rooms with a view were nicer inside the room as well as with a better view. The rooms without an ocean view overlook the top of a map and it's an eyesore. Those rooms are also a little dated. Upgrading was definitely worth it! The second room was beautiful! The buffet was excellent, and the service and staff were amazing. Not all the shows were entertaining, sometimes they were just karaoke night. The live music was the same band every night, so it got a little tiring. The beach was great, clean, no seaweed, and a lifeguard on duty. The loungers under the palm trees were lovely to relax in. The sun umbrellas do not protect from all UV light. We learned that the hard way. The people were so nice and friendly! Overall we had a great stay and we will be back in the future!

Staff was amazing. Rooms are showing their age. We were moved from our original room after we had plumbing and electrical issues. Our second room was definitely better.

Old building with many defects

We really enjoyed our stay the hotel’s proximity to the beach was great, the room was lovely, and the pools were a nice bonus. However, only one elevator was working during our visit, which caused long wait times. We also had some trouble with the room key cards constantly deactivating, requiring multiple trips to the front desk for reactivation.

Good location, A/C units need attention!

we booked online with expedia an ocean view room; we were given a lagoon view room, which in fact was facing the back of the large shopping mall - that meant lots of noise during the night form freight trucks, garbage trucks and such; visual appeal of the shopping mall back side not at all fit with a vacation setting; disappointing that we could not change the room even with an upgrade cost we were prepared to pay

The oven view family room was spacious and the view was fantastic. We had two balconies and plenty of room for 6 people. There was a sofa bed as well.

Third time staying here in 2 years. Had a couple issues with key card reader and a gap in the window, like someone tried to open it. Got a supervisor involved and our key reader was fixed in minutes and maintenance came back and fixed the window while we were at dinner. Super amazing staff!!!!

Horrible customer service

I've visited this area over 20 times, staying at different resorts, and unfortunately, this was one of my most disappointing trips. The resort itself was great for the price, and the food and drinks were about what I expected at this price point. However, aside from three or four staff members, the service was surprisingly poor. Many of the staff were extremely rude, despite the fact that I always tip. Housekeeping never showed up one day, even after I requested service twice. When I called down to at least get fresh towels, no one ever came. One of the main reasons I vacation in Quintana Roo is the exceptional hospitality, but this time, the experience fell far short of the 10/10 service I’ve come to expect. While I appreciate the resort’s value, the service issues on this trip were disappointing enough that I’d think twice before return. If you visit this resort the girl at the front desk was great along with a few servers, the bellhop, and the bartender by the upstairs pool!

Lost my passport and security staff jumped on and do a huge all out investigation, very impressive. They had treams going trough garbage and laundry. They found it and save the day since i was leaving 420 am the next day. Shows where great and the dj at the main pool was doing all my request.Management has a great team of employees. 100 % will go back. Only one thing they have an italian restraunt, wow not even close. It was like the blind leading the blind on that one. But all other restraunts where great !!! . Shie

The location is excellent. Short walk to shopping mall and there is a local bus that will get you around the hotel district for $1USD to the main night life area. The property is clean and well maintained. It’s a smaller property so you don’t get overwhelmed with people. This is not a party location which is nice. Still a great energetic atmosphere and always activities to get involved in. The water aerobics was my favourite - a lot of fun and the instructors were very enthusiastic!! Family friendly with an adult pool section too. Didn’t seem to need it, there was plenty of space that you don’t get overwhelmed even if you’re not big into having children around. The staff were very friendly. Big shout out to Daniel and Louis our favourite bar tenders! Fast, great service, great energy and make fabulous drinks! The beach front is unmatched. Beautiful clean beach, lots of seating and a beautiful view. The food is good enough. It’s not a 5 star cuisine at the buffets but it kept you full and the were enough options. The a la cartes were delicious. Book in early though. You can get in line to book at 0800hrs but by 0930hrs the options are limited or booked out. You have to book on a daily basis too, not days in advance. Overall a great stay. I would go back no hesitation!!

This place was great had no issues. The staff is great the food was awesome 👌 The only thing I would say is our check in process was to long of a wait .

I had no idea this is a member property. The members get priority over all restaurants. Our group was in line at 7:30 am and could only get reservations after 9pm. Disappointed and will not return.

The food was really bad! Very limited choices! Same fish every day No other seafood No ice cream . Drinks were so watery . We will not be coming back here !!

Todo bien, Está económico a mi punto de vista el hotel, estuve con mi hermana del 13-19 de noviembre, y la verdad no estuvimos mucho tiempo en el hotel pues teníamos turs. Pero si les digo que no estuvimos un hotel para estar todo el día, es para estar poco tiempo e irte a conocer Cancún y la rivera maya. La comida no es variada, siempre era lo mismo. Solo una noche cenamos en el restaurante italiano y la verdad la pizza estaba fea, la pasta también, la comida no tiene sabor. El bufet no vale la pena. Les digo es para estar poco tiempo en el hotel,o que si es que la vista al mar caribe es preciosa. Si voy a estar todo el día en el hotel prefiere pagar un poco más por algo mejor

You need to be a gold member to get the best treatment otherwise you can’t even reserve at the restaurants.

If you’re looking to stay at a budget-friendly resort, Continental Tucancun is a great option for your wallet. The location is perfect—right across the street, there’s a shopping center with a supermarket, pharmacy, clothing stores, restaurants, and even a hospital. The service at the resort was excellent, especially at the buffet, thanks to Miriam, Omar, and Jennifer, who were very kind and attentive. We also want to thank Noelia and Victor from the entertainment team for all the activities. Noelia, thank you so much for my braids—I loved them! Thanks to all of you, our experience with the hotel staff was amazing. Unfortunately, not everything was perfect. The food was not very good, especially at the buffet, where they serve the same things every day: pasta, mashed potatoes, chicken, and pork for both lunch and dinner. There is little variety and the food lacks flavor. The resort has three additional restaurants, but they are only open for dinner and require a reservation. The problem is you need to wake up early in the morning to secure one. If you go around 8:30 or 9:00 a.m., there are usually no spots left. We stayed for 11 days and were only able to get three reservations. Our goal in choosing a resort was to relax, not to stress about waking up early just to make a dinner reservation.

Overall nice property and experience. Wasn’t a fan that the bars only had one server. Especially the lobby bar. At night when it was the only bar open it took awhile to get a drink. Also, you have to make in person reservations the morning of for dinner. If you missed your time slot you had to go to the buffet. Even when there was open tables available and I was by myself.
