The Shoal Hotel La Jolla Beach

We were just here one night but we were quite impressed how they have updated this property . The rooms are modern and clean, and the pool area was a great place to relax. We really appreciated that the hotel provided beach chairs and we were able to walk down to the beach and enjoy the sunset.

Clean, comfortable, no frills rooms. The hot tub was a nice feature. I was disappointed with the parking fees.

Great updated rooms with comfy beds and effective air conditioners. Small but useful parking lot. Pool area needs upgrades and extra cleanliness attention but there is a pool and jacuzzi on site. Beautiful neigborhood walk to the beach. Loved the bike rentals.

This was a good value. It was convenient to the beach and was in a good location to find some dining options. They also had bikes on-site that could be rented for a low fee. Desk staff were very kind and helpful. Thanks for a nice weekend getaway!

Best bang for buck I could have asked for. Very quick walk to the beach, easy check-in, comfy beds. Parking gets rough at night, but parking across the street is still doable.

I loved the Jacuzzi and the pool and the easy access to the beach. Not so crazy about the $15 to park. It was very cool that they gave us beach supplies for free.

The staff was kind and receptive and they did a guest of the day random surprise and they picked us! It was such a nice treat to have the free parking and we didn't get to use the bicycle rental, but it was such a lovely gesture.

Parking lot was very difficult to navigate and not monitored that those parking were staying at hotel.

Walk to Windansea Beach, however need to drive to get to PB, La Jolla Shores, ETC.. some stores nearby. Nice and easy to park there. The minifridge was so loud we unplugged it. Everynight asked the front desk to turn off the gas from the firepit, apparently it was leaking a bit, not a good sign. Lots of potential, but would not return.

From this property you can walk all the sights of La Jolla easily It had a nice pool and hot tub as well.

Great location very close to the beach. Rooms have been updated. Staff are nice. Our room was on the first floor right next to the housekeeping storage, which is very loud starting around 7am when they are getting cleaning supplies set up. You are also able to hear everything from the rooms above you, there is no soundproofing and the floors are hard so you can hear every step above you. If you’re a light sleeper be aware of this. I got earplugs the second night and was able to sleep better. Water pressure in the shower is very low and sometimes only heats up to a lukewarm temperature. There was also sand all over the shower floor when we got there and a small amount in the bed. None of the countertops were cleaned; there were stains from glasses and crumbs on the bedside tables. There were also smudges on the mirrors. Just wasn’t as clean as I’d hoped it would be. We paid $240/night & parking is an additional $15/night. If you’re planning on staying here I would ask for a room on the top floor at the back of the building.

Most Inns do not provide super clean rooms. This one was exceptionally clean and comfortable!! Will stay here again!

The Shoal La Jolla Beach was a great place to stay to explore the area. It took about three minutes to walk to the beach. The room was quite spacious and recently renovated. The beds were comfortable and the shower had good water pressure. The staff was what made this place so special. They were so friendly and helpful.

I really enjoyed my stay here. The room was spacious and super clean and each staff member we interacted with was so wonderful. I look forward to staying here again :)

Cute little retro property with great walking to beach. Cons are the water pressure (goes to a trickle when your neighbor turns on the shower), musty smelling room air conditioner, and a very dirty room floor. Seriously, our feet were black from this floor after walking around the room with no shoes; the floors need major mopping. Also, the parking is a nightmare, esp when large SUVs/trucks try to park. Good luck getting out of that parking lot unless you’re in a compact car.

The room we had was a King single. There was room for one chair that was squeezed in next to the a/c unit, so you froze if you sat there. There were no other chairs available so the long counter under the television was useless except for stacking items on. It was not functional to use as a desk. The area for hanging clothes was too small to handle a large suitcase, so it had to sit out in the room and take up what limited space there was. Room was just too cramped for two people.

Comfortable enough for a night. Newly renovated but missing attention to detail in the finishing of the renovations- gaps in the tile for no reason for instance. Loud at night (it was a Monday night, I could hear conversations 2 rooms away). Parking is tight. Bed comfy.

Great room, nice and clean modern looking. Has all utilities you need. Good price and nice staff.

The room was great, staff were amazing. Walls were not sound proof. I woke up at 4:30am due to the people above me walking around with shoes on. From what I could hear they had a sick child. The man next-door made a phone call and we could hear the entire conversation like he was in the room.

Second time staying received complimentary parking! Walls really thin could hear person In next room snoring 😴 most of the night. Unit very clean.Otherwise a very pleasant stay.

This hotel was a pleasant surprise. We enjoyed our short walk to Windansea Beach and having restaurants nearby. Threre is an on site pool, coffee bar, and the staff was super accommodating. The rooms are spacious and updated. The farm house sliding door was cute but not practical for a bathroom. I’d definitely stay here again.

This is obviously an older hotel, but when we opened the door to our room we were pleasantly surprised. The room had been updated nicely and had a large brightly colored sofa that doesn’t fit typical boring hotel room tradition. I am here for it! The room was extremely clean, well stocked with towels, bedding, and basic coffee setup. For reference I am currently staying in a five star hotel and The Shoal La Jolla Beach, was cleaner. There was ample room for our things and for our bags to go without being in our way. The aircon worked wonderfully and kept us comfortable through the hot night, and the family enjoyed the pool. It too was well stocked, clean, and had our family enjoying our time there. All beds including the sofa were comfortable. The only thing I wish we’d been aware of is that the sofa is not a pullout type sofa bed. You remove the large cushions from the back and the sofa itself is the bed (twin bed size). There are sheets and blankets to put over the cushions before sleeping on it. It was large enough that two of the kids (12yo & 6yo) who wanted to be by each other fit at each end without issue. The location is fantastic to be nearby several different beaches and there was a convenience store within a short drive when we had an emergency tummy ache during the night. I had some Amazon packages delivered to the hotel the day prior to our arrival and they were waiting at the desk for us without issue.

Non-disclosed parking fee. Was not initially given the room I reserved. Had to go back to the front desk to get it straightened out. Desk staff was clearly miffed that I insisted on the room I reserved. Absolutely horrendously uncomfortable, hard bed. Even though the room was very clean, I expected much better overall experience. Cannot recommend.

Wish there was an elevator to 3rd floor., but service was excellent and staff very nice. Great location.

Very nice and simple. Worked great for the night. The staff was super friendly and the bed was comfortable. It has a good location for both parts of La Jolla. It’s not luxury but it is nice.

Very noisy. It’s on a noisy street and the walls are thin. We rented their bikes for $25 a day. It would be nice if that was free.

Stayed here 4 nights, and it was such a cute spot! So close to the beach, and neutral to all the spots like La Jolla cove, Pacific beach, mission beach! Would stay again!

The street outside the hotel was under construction but it did not bother us at all. They worked during the daylight hours and the road was accessible during the evening. It was a quick walk to the beach. Awesome area for checking out the surfers and fantastic food options.

The Shoal did not disappoint. Immediately, upon entering the room, it smelled clean. It was nicely decorated and efficient. The bathroom was beautiful with nice tiles and a glass shower door. Everything on the grounds is clean and in good condition. We used the pool, hot tub and laundry facilities. Coffee and oatmeal were available for breakfast. There is a short walk to the beach. All the employees were wonderful.

Stayed here before. Quiet neighborhood not too far from beach. Short drive to a great bunch of restaurants at the intersection of Draper and Pearl.

This is a cute, clean hotel with helpful welcoming staff. It’s an easy walk to beautiful beaches, nice neighborhoods, and several good restaurants.

The staff is excellent - can’t say enough nice things about them. But they need to fix up the rooms. Sone outlets don’t work. The clock/alarm is with the phone and doesn’t work either. The most annoying thing is that there is no real door to the bathroom. There is a sliding door so to speak which cannot close all the way and part of it slides off the rod from which it hangs and there is no way to lock it. I didn’t see an air conditioner or dehumidifier. No food options or listings for door dash. The place is fine but it needs an update

Good experience. Blocks from the ocean, but a drive to La Jolla's cove and concentration of shops and restaurants. I found a cluster of restaurants that are local favorites at the intersection of Pearl and Draper.

No breakfast, no changing of linens, parking is impossible if you return to the property after 6pm.

This place was newly remodeled and very clean. It was walking close to the beautiful Windandsea beach as well as restaurants and shops. The staff were friendly and they had complimentary oatmeal packets in the lobby for a quick breakfast. Parking was an extra charge and the parking lot was a little tight. We had to park in back in the alley parking spots one night since it was too difficult to get in or out of the two remaining spots. Our room was spacious and had a nice balcony with table and chairs. The room could have used some more lighting and there were no towels bars or hooks in the bathroom. A nice touch was bike rentals available on site. We would stay here again and recommend it to friends.
