Very convenient and walkable to the down town. There's a trolly that stopped right across the street, but the walk is short so we didn't take it, also we didn't know the schedule. Staff was friendly. I missed the part about no refrigerator in the room which was a bummer since we were traveling on the road for two weeks and had to keep our food in the cooler overnight. Ice maker on the 2nd floor was out of service. Over all a good place to stay.

The young lady at the front desk was rude! I tried to purchase drinks in the vending machine, but it took my money and was broken. The desk attendant was unprofessional and upset because I WOKE her up!! Left at midnight to purchase drinks at the store and she was STILL asleep!’ Hair dryer didn’t work, dog urine in the elevator, TV was so small and coffee pot was disgustingly. NEVER AGAIN!

Parking lot not well maintained after snow and ice. Made for easy falls.

Elevator was broken. After second trip, the key finally worked....and bugs came running out of a tear in the carpet. I told the staff we wouldn't be staying. Only plus was that I was given a refund quickly when I contacted hotels.com

I booked our stay 20 minutes before we arrived. Some of the reviews concerned me, but we just needed a place to sleep after being in the car all day. My family was greeted by the kindest woman. The lobby was clean. Our double queen, non-smoking room was impeccable. It was updated, and smelled so clean. The beds were extremely comfortable. The room was quiet. My kiddos enjoyed the huge pool. I am so happy we stayed here!

This 1962 property is run down, dirty and basically the only thing going for it is free parking and close to downtown. The pool is there covered up and unavailable, I would never stay there again.

Parking was easy and basically in downtown so didnt have to drive but a minute to ride the train and some nice places to eat

Friendly and helpful staff. Very clean and comfortable room. Only downside was the VERY noisy elevator we heard every time it moved .

The service is polite, the pool is clean, they are kind, all the people that work there are great!

Exceeded my expectations! Clean, great location and price. Only negative is the train whistle around midnight woke me up, but overall a great deal downtown. Loved the large and convenient parking too!

Check in went smoothly. Once we got to the room we observed large wads of hair on floor bedding covered in long black hair sheets wrinkled and not clean. Went back to reception was assigned to a new room which was a slight downgrade no refrigerator or microwave however room appeared clean. Very loud overnight parking lot did not feel safe very shady characters walking around in and out of hotel lobby

The shower head had mold. There was hair along the walls in the bathroom. Overall it was just an unkept place. Will not stay there again.

The room was disgustingly filthy! Dirty sheets, blankets, pillows, pillow cases, orange table runners they had on the beds were stained up and filthy, lamps were dirty and dusty, shower curtain also dirty with something appearing to be dried blood, outside of the door was filthy, inside of the door looked like it had something sprayed all over the inside of it, beer, soda, urine who knows it was gross, chair was filthy and stained up and even had cuts in the fabric and tears, the electrical wall socket was covered in black dust a half an inch thick. I have NEVER seen anything so unkept at a motel, or anywhere for that matter. Microwave also dirty with duct tape to hold the door shut. Bed skirt also filthy and stained up, took a wipe across the top of the headboard attached to the wall and also had a heavy layer of black filth. Asked for a different room, it was also dirty. Oh yes and the smell. Horrible stench that nearly choked you walking in the door. Run down I can handle, which this place certainly was, but the nasty filth is inexcusable. Not to mention we found out on our last nights stay there had been someone murdered on the 4th floor the previous month. They did have breakfast if you could look past the gnats swarming and landing on all the food. The only thing positive I have to say about this place is that the pool was clean and the pool area was kept. I also was bitten by a spider during my stay. Please take this review serious. Choose another safer cleaner motel.

The room was only superficially clean. There were chips behind the nightstand and a pill bisible just under the dresser. The worst problem was the bugs. One type mostly in the barhroom; another large bug crawled across by laptop screen. I think it might have been a termite.

This was a decent overnight stop while I was on the road. The room was clean and well-kept. Comfortable bed, friendly service, good price. Would recommend!

This hotel is really overpriced. It had bed bugs, the bed was very dirty and had blood on the mattress. The sheets weren’t changed and the room wasn’t cleaned, there was rubbish everywhere. It was really messy and noisy. I cancelled my trip and still had to pay for two nights even though i didn’t stay that long. Disgusting dirty hotel. I do not recommend at all.

Dead bug and food on the floor, debris on the bathroom floor, tables sticky and crumbs all over. Just disgusting.

The first room we were in was 301. Went to go to bed and a wet spot came up from under the sheet. Smelled like urine. I have pictures. Pulled the sheet off and the bed pad had a large urine spot and smell on the bed pad. The pad also had several other stains. Very nice front desk staff took me to another room to preview all looked ok. Turns out that room didn’t have hot water. When checking out I mentioned the hot water issue and was told it takes a while to warm up. I had let it run for 20 minutes without any hot water coming in. Breakfast items were stored on the floor of a utility closet off of the lobby. (Was left wide open for patrons to see). After laying in someone else’s urine the first day I wasn’t eating breakfast there anyway.

Very comfortable bed. OLD toilets very low and no provision for older persons to increase height by adding a plastic higher seat on top, easily purchased to have on hand. Breakfast food mediocre at best. Ice machine broken on second floor. Soundproofing inadequate- could hear elevator moving in shaft several rooms away late into the night disturbing sleep. No microwave, but iron and board available. Front desk staff in daytime kind, helpful.

On the whole, everything was just average except the lobby was very attractive. It's obvious that this is an older property and the rooms have been renovated/painted many times. The elevator was cramped and could use a little TLC. BUT, the king bed was comfy and we slept well which is really what you want, right?!

Shower ceiling was duty and cracked. No refrigerator in the room. Bed was very comfortable but blanket had several holes in it

Our room was clean and in good condition. Looks like the rooms were updated but the elevator and hallways needed painting. The breakfast room was clean with a mediocre continental breakfast.

It is an old style hotel without indoor hallway. When outside is cold. It is hard to open door. In addition, there is no effective way to get fresh air to keep good indoor air quality.

Quiet. Comfortable beds and pillows. Clean room and bathroom. Stain on carpet under the sink.

Nice clean motel convenient to the historic downtown. However, I could hear some kind of machinery noise going on and off all night which definitely interfered with my sleep.

The location is great for walking to downtown Staunton. The bed was comfortable and the room layout good. It was a nonsmoking room and it reeked of stale cigarette smoke.

The room was not cleaned properly, there was food on the floor from a previous guest. The beds were very uncomfortable. Upon checkin, I was handed our keys, that was pretty much it. She never explained check out process, breakfast times etc. Not friendly at all. Now, on Saturday as we were leaving to head to a wedding, a gentleman behind the counter was super friendly, loved it! He was the only one. At checkout time Sunday morning, the guy acted like I was bothering him, I know it was 5am but I needed a receipt and needed to get on the road for a 12 hour drive.

I always stay here when visiting family in Staunton. The main reason? Because of the service!! They are so nice and accommodating! Yes, it is older and dated a bit, but they recently gave the place a fresh paint job and are doing their best. Thank you

We stay here overnight on our way to North Carolina Beaches. The staff is always accomodating and friendly.The rooms are well cleaned, and the beds are comfy. Breakfast is so-so, but there are other nearby options if that is important to you. There is a trolley ride around town, which the kids love. Historic downtown is within walking distance, with lots of restaurants and activities to do.

The owner was there when we stayed, and she was nice enough let me park my motorcycle under the awning during our stay, which she then put us in a room directly above where it was parked. Will definitely be back!

I room was real nice and clean. The desk personnel where very friendly. I locked myself out of the room and the help gave me a new card with big smiles and friendliness.

Was locked out of my room by front desk, they couldn't explain why. Shower water was like warm. My non-smoking room smelled like THC smoke. Room was in poor shape. Staff not friendly.

Love the location of this hotel, walkable to everything in Historic Staunton, friendly owner at front desk. Love that it is all dog-friendly with a reasonable fee so next time I am in town I can bring my doggo. Stars appropriate for this hotel and price point, anyone looking for fancier lodging while in town have other options. I asked for a fridge and was able to get a room facing the town with a fridge.

A fine property for a short stay in Staunton. Proximity to the downtown area makes it an ideal spot for the solo traveler or couple to explore the area's events and night spots.

Although the outside could use some paint, we were very happy that the rooms were clean and fresh. They came in each morning to make beds. The hotel is in walking distance to downtown! Also has a great Mexican food place across the parking lot. Dollar General a few blocks away for anything you might need. The breakfast is a bit sad with no eggs or sausage. But, there are some great mom and pop breakfast places in a few minutes drive. Loved the area. Well worth the money. We also went with another couple and had adjacent rooms. Staff was very nice. Parking is right there in front of hotel.

We didn’t have high expectations for the price but it didn’t meet them. This place seems to attract long term low cost stays which made it feel a bit like a housing project. There were some possibly intoxicated guys trying to get a room at check in making a bit of an uncomfortable scene at the front door which felt unsafe with my small children. Everything is very run down with stained carpets and dirty walls. We almost didn’t stay but had very limited options.

Pros: The room itself is very clean and colorful. The A/C was icy cold. It was quiet. Dowtown is walkable and 5 blocks awaywith really good restuarants with outdoor closed-pedestrian street seating. Convenient to the quaint dowtown area. Cons: The exterior of the hotel is aged and gives the impression that the rooms would be likewise but fortunately the rooms are brighly colorful and clean. The people walking int he immediate area can seem suspect......as in a bit "rough" looking or "off" due to alcohol or substance use, hence at times it can seem slightly sketchy. If you need a cheap hotel, clean,convenient to nice places to eat and coffee shops.....book it

Good for a quick overnight on our way home. Breakfast-not so much. Definitely not what we have had in other hotels.

A real find in downtown Staunton. Although it’s an old hotel facility, the rooms are clean, spacious, and well furnished. The breakfast buffet has cereals, wonderful breads, fruits, and great coffee. The Blackfriars Theater is a ten minute walk. Restaurants are located nearby. We are making this place our go-to spot for our visits to Staunton.

The Howard Johnson in Staunton will never outshine the much-more expensive, surrounding lodgings, but it has always been a perfectly nice, budget-friendly place to stay. But during our recent stay, our first since the pandemic, we were sad to see many drops in quality. No hot breakfast, no fridge or microwave in rooms, lack of furniture in rooms. In our room specifically, the sink leaked and the shower grout was moldy. I don't think we'll be back.

Convenient hotel in the center of Staunton. Cleanliness was good except for the caulking around the bath tub which was mouldy. Breakfast was lacking in choices, with only toast or bagels plus butter and jam. In addition, the rooms are old style motel, with balconies on the outside of the building. The elevator was faster than most. Considering the price, which was low, not a bad value overall though. We enjoyed our night in Staunton.
