Most of the staff were welcoming and helpful. When issues were raised sought to correct immediately. The grounds were well kept but mostly woodland, not really suitable for older residents to walk around. There are steps leading to reception. The room and bed were comfortable enough, warm and rooms pretty quiet. Sadly the woodwork, curtains, decorative pillow and headboard were either dirty or stained. The silicone around the bath was unsightly and needed renewing. We expected our cups and refreshments to be changed/topped up daily but no maid visited the room, so we ran out of milk and teabags and had to drink from stained cups. The breakfast was nicely cooked. There were also fresh croissants and small pastries, small packets of cereal, yogurts and fruit. Toast you had to do yourself. Tea or coffee were brought to you. Our experience of the bar menu did not live up to our expectations but the staff were happy to compensate for this. All in all a pleasant stay but a little more attention to detail would improve the experience. Lastly, the lady on reception was lovely, helpful and kind, which made all the difference.

We had an enjoyable two night stay at Hazlewood Castle. As a family of four we stayed in the Daisy Room which was very comfortable, the two children had the option of sharing a double sofa bed or one using the single bed in the main bedroom. We stayed during Storm Franklin so we arrived during a rainstorm and there was extremely wild and windy weather outside on the first night. The children commented that arriving at a haunted castle in a storm was like the beginning of a Scooby Doo adventure! Excellent food and friendly service in the Vavasour Restaurant, the children’s menu being particularly good value. We also enjoyed a fine lunch in the lounge. We took the opportunity to go on a tour of the castle which was accompanied by a very informative talk from Steve, well worth doing if you have time. Our only criticisms were minor attention to detail points on the room, there were four of us but only two tea cups, more were supplied on request. For some reason there was no waste bin in the room, just the one in the bathroom, so nowhere to put used teabags and empty coffee packets etc. We did mention this to cleaning staff but still no bin arrived. Minor quibbles though in an otherwise enjoyable and memorable half term break.

We had a lovely room but access to the hotel for people with mobility issues would be an issue as there is a steep flight of steps to reception and to the rooms. Not ideal if bringing heavy cases. Decor is lovely but in terms of cleanliness our bath was not thoroughly cleaned as it was oily on the sides.

Stayed in Geranium. Spacious room and bathroom, good shower. Only one chair to sit on so could have done with another and there was plenty of room. The radiator didn’t seem to work, so wasn’t cosy but didn’t seem cold either. Breakfast choice good. Car park small. Beautiful grounds, bluebells and young deer.

Stayed here recently and was really impressed. The hotel is in a great location – surprisingly quiet despite being just off the A64, with easy access to the A1(M), making it perfect for road trips or business travel. The grounds are beautiful, well-maintained, and offer a peaceful setting to relax in. There’s also ample parking, which made everything so much easier. All the staff were welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. A special shout-out to Alice and Jen in the restaurant – their service was absolutely fabulous! Friendly, attentive, and made the dining experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this hotel for a peaceful stay with excellent service, beautiful surroundings, and great convenience. Will definitely return!

This hotel - or rather complex - is a real gem. Spa, quad biking, axe throwing, secret forest and forest amphitheatre. Fantastic variety of activities, and friendly, helpful staff who are very eager to ensure your stay is perfect. This included going the extra mile to ensure I was able to video conference despite the challenge that a building with thick stone walls presents for wifi. Rooms are superb with every possible amenity.

The shower was mouldy. Staff while I stayed were helpful and polite. However, I had cause to telephone reception on the evening after I left. My calls were repeatedly answered and hung-up immediately without anyone speaking. On the last attempt the handset was simply left on the reception desk for me to listen to another customer complaining. After a few minutes the receptionist again hung up without speaking. Disgraceful way to treat a customer. No going back.

Service ranged from excellent to poor. Took allergies very serious which was fab but waited a long time to order drinks at bar and food. Check out time nobody at the fest waited a while before member of staff showed up. Hotel itself seems dated. Rooms not clean. Windows gives in dirt. Extractor fan covered in dust. Wall paper peeling all walls etc. not worth the price paid for especially as we did a suite

The hotel and grounds are lovely could do with the odd tlc in places but nothing bad as it is an old building Are room was lovely only small down side was the bathroom could do with a spruce up the grouting around the bath wasn’t the best and in some places had come out We dined at the restaurant and the food was lovely the service was a little slow but could of been understaffed but not enough to complain like a few others did ( to get the odd freebie ) would stay again but in the summer so we could enjoy the grounds more

We had stayed here in the past and were looking forward to returning. We were given a nice room for our 2 night stay and I have to say the building and the history of the place is one of the reasons we returned. However on this occasion we had a number of issues that I feel should be mentioned. Firstly, although some of the older staff were excellent, there seems to be a disconnect between some of the younger staff as to what level service should be given in hotel of this quality. There were a lot of young people on duty and I assume they were receiving training which is of course fair enough. However this lack was also experienced in some of the older staff. For example the gentleman manning the bistro restaurant where we went for coffee on one of the days was very discourteous when we advised him we didn't want lunch, only coffee. He grabbed the menus back from us and walked away before we'd even finished ordering. When he returned I asked if we could have some biscuits, he grunted "probably not but I'll take a look". We never got biscuits or an explanation. Our room was cleaned after the first night but when we returned to the room we found the bed had been made but looked like someone had been sleeping on it as it was so messy, we also found nasty brown "smears" on the clean towels. I took these to reception to complain but there was no manager available. I was told a manger would contact me before I left or by email afterwards, I never got a reply. Never heard anything

Very relaxing stay in quiet, beautiful surroundings, and you can sit out out in the gardens. Everything clean and well-maintained. All staff were very friendly and helpful. The only part which was not that good was the breakfast. Although there was much on offer, the food had been cooked some time before, kept hot, resulting in, for example, very dry bacon.

Was a beautiful place, the grounds and views were amazing. Staff were very friendly, unfortunately on arrival we didn't any information apart from were our room was and would we require a table for evening meal. No times were told what time for meals, were we had to go.Which would have helped. Food in lounge was lovely, and hot a little expensive, not a lot to chose from. Breakfast on first morning was lovely and hot, made to order, second day it was self service for cooked breakfast , unfortunately the food was only warm. Rooms was lovely our room was named Lily, on arrival we had to ask for towels as they hadn't left any, when asked they did sort out straight away. The room was not spotless looked like they hadn't even cleaned bathroom, hair all around the bath and sink, very dusty also. The whole room needed a good dusting as there was lots of dust and cobwebs. On both mornings we got woken up by a barking dog, which was barking for 20 minutes non stop at 7.00am

The whole room needed a good dusting as there was lots of dust and cobwebs. On both mornings we got woken up by a barking dog, which was barking for 20 minutes non stop at 7.00am

Beautiful castle, loved the grounds and library. Really enjoyed dinner in the restaurant. Staff were really friendly. There were quite a few bugs in the room when we arrived but we got rid of them so it wasn’t a problem after that. Toilet could have been more thoroughly cleaned. Overall we both had a good nights sleep in the comfy bed. Perfect for one night.

OMG to Sublime. Originally allocated Marigold Suite in Courtyard. Best description – student digs. Dreadful bed (2 lumpy singles thrown together and billed as a King), tatty, tired, no soap or shower gel, right by the bins (0700 awakening) and not even 2* let alone 4* accommodation. Next morning saw the Manager – Lys (sorry, hope spelling correct) - and she arranged a move to the main castle into the Hibiscus Room. Talk about a difference – wow. Lovely suite, comfy, cosy and really homely. Much more like a 4* property. Okay, even this room could benefit from a chest of drawers and a few more coat hangers, but way, way, way better and raises this review from dreadful to really, really nice. In defence of the hotel, it seems that Marigold is being renovated in Feb 24 – but it needs it; in spades. Hibiscus – a totally different kettle of fish and if allocated that room, would be back in a heartbeat. Thanks for your brilliant assistance Lys. You made the stay!

The Castle and it’s grounds are something that other hotels simply cannot match. That’s where it’s excellence ends. The room was tiny, the Wi-Fi did not function, the bed was very badly made with non of the sheets tucked in on the sides, the mattress was poor and soft, the inability of the hotel to offer a few minutes over without demanding £10 an hour make is all rather disappointing.

Easy check in and lovely atmosphere in the property. Room was really great and filled with a lot of character. Unfortunately the room was freezing and had a lot of draughts through the old windows and the heating wasn’t very high. We also had a bathroom heater that didn’t work and despite telling reception they said they’d look for an electric one but never heard anything back.

Stayed in Geranium. Spacious room and bathroom, good shower. Only one chair to sit on so could have done with another and there was plenty of room. The radiator didn’t seem to work, so wasn’t cosy but didn’t seem cold either. Breakfast choice good. Car park small. Beautiful grounds, bluebells and young deer.

This hotel - or rather complex - is a real gem. Spa, quad biking, axe throwing, secret forest and forest amphitheatre. Fantastic variety of activities, and friendly, helpful staff who are very eager to ensure your stay is perfect. This included going the extra mile to ensure I was able to video conference despite the challenge that a building with thick stone walls presents for wifi. Rooms are superb with every possible amenity.

All staff in the Castle and Spa were helpful and kind. Although the hotel was well understaffed at one point on a sat night the bar lounge didnt have a bartender for over half hour, leaving guests unable to order food or drinks

The shower was mouldy. Staff while I stayed were helpful and polite. However, I had cause to telephone reception on the evening after I left. My calls were repeatedly answered and hung-up immediately without anyone speaking. On the last attempt the handset was simply left on the reception desk for me to listen to another customer complaining. After a few minutes the receptionist again hung up without speaking. Disgraceful way to treat a customer. No going back.

Service ranged from excellent to poor. Took allergies very serious which was fab but waited a long time to order drinks at bar and food. Check out time nobody at the fest waited a while before member of staff showed up. Hotel itself seems dated. Rooms not clean. Windows gives in dirt. Extractor fan covered in dust. Wall paper peeling all walls etc. not worth the price paid for especially as we did a suite

The hotel is excellent and this was our second visit. The staff are very friendly and efficient. The housekeeping staff are fantastic; all of our toiletries, water and snacks were replenished on a daily basis. The grounds are beautiful and our children particularly enjoyed watching the peacocks. Breakfast was very good but not consistent; fresh fruit was not always available. The service at dinner was extremely slow. There are also no vegetarian options for evening dining. The bedrooms are very large but in need of a revamp.

We had stayed here in the past and were looking forward to returning. We were given a nice room for our 2 night stay and I have to say the building and the history of the place is one of the reasons we returned. However on this occasion we had a number of issues that I feel should be mentioned. Firstly, although some of the older staff were excellent, there seems to be a disconnect between some of the younger staff as to what level service should be given in hotel of this quality. There were a lot of young people on duty and I assume they were receiving training which is of course fair enough. However this lack was also experienced in some of the older staff. For example the gentleman manning the bistro restaurant where we went for coffee on one of the days was very discourteous when we advised him we didn't want lunch, only coffee. He grabbed the menus back from us and walked away before we'd even finished ordering. When he returned I asked if we could have some biscuits, he grunted "probably not but I'll take a look". We never got biscuits or an explanation. Our room was cleaned after the first night but when we returned to the room we found the bed had been made but looked like someone had been sleeping on it as it was so messy, we also found nasty brown "smears" on the clean towels. I took these to reception to complain but there was no manager available. I was told a manger would contact me before I left or by email afterwards, I never got a reply. Never heard anything

The hotel is in a great location – surprisingly quiet despite being just off the A64, with easy access to the A1(M), making it perfect for road trips or business travel. The grounds are beautiful, well-maintained, and offer a peaceful setting to relax in. There’s also ample parking, which made everything so much easier. All the staff were welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. A special shout-out to Alice and Jen in the restaurant – their service was absolutely fabulous! Friendly, attentive, and made the dining experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend this hotel for a peaceful stay with excellent service, beautiful surroundings, and great convenience. Was working in Leeds the following day and looking for somewhere different to stay, found hazlewood castle almost be accident but what a find. Great location, incredible architecture with history going back almost 1000 years. Will definitely look to stay again.

I absolutely loved this place. The setting in the countryside, the amazing building, the spacious, light room, the wonderful service - my only complaint is that I only had one night! Totally recommended. It was great!

Excellent hotel. This renovated castle is full of character in a quiet area. The room was spacious and comfortable. The breakfast did not have too much of a choice but what was available was of high quality and satisfied me. I never ate in restaurant but did dine in the bar, again the choice was not too big but the quality was excellent. The staff were polite and attentive. I highly recommend this hotel for a relaxing time.

We have stayed at many hotels in the past the staff are very friendly at Hazlewood but things could be improved as the breakfast was a total let down it was self service and only lukewarm. No Yogurts No fruit but how can a Hotel run out of Milk. Tea Coffee brought to the table without milk the hotel must have run out on Sunday .Very poor management this should never happen we have never experienced this before and was a total let down.Also there is a 10% service charge for everything all food and drinks.For what the Hotel charges they need to greatly improve we will not even consider coming back again.

Very relaxing stay in quiet, beautiful surroundings, and you can sit out out in the gardens. Everything clean and well-maintained. All staff were very friendly and helpful. The only part which was not that good was the breakfast. Although there was much on offer, the food had been cooked some time before, kept hot, resulting in, for example, very dry bacon.

Was a beautiful place, the grounds and views were amazing. Staff were very friendly, unfortunately on arrival we didn't any information apart from were our room was and would we require a table for evening meal. No times were told what time for meals, were we had to go.Which would have helped. Food in lounge was lovely, and hot a little expensive, not a lot to chose from. Breakfast on first morning was lovely and hot, made to order, second day it was self service for cooked breakfast , unfortunately the food was only warm. Rooms was lovely our room was named Lily, on arrival we had to ask for towels as they hadn't left any, when asked they did sort out straight away. The room was not spotless looked like they hadn't even cleaned bathroom, hair all around the bath and sink, very dusty also. The whole room needed a good dusting as there was lots of dust and cobwebs. On both mornings we got woken up by a barking dog, which was barking for 20 minutes non stop at 7.00am

Amazing reception staff, so helpful and friendly giving me directions around the castle (especially as my room was behind the secret door!). Evening meal and breakfast was great too. Good size room, nice amenities but not the cleanest. For the price is was a great stay.

Decent hotel but rooms in need of a facelift and decoration. I was particularly annoyed with the fact that after dinner when paying the bill, I added a tip with their knowledge and they never told me a 10% service charge had already been added. This has annoyed me, so won’t be returning. I’ll go where I can encounter honest and forthright staff.

We had a mixed but mostly positive stay at Hazelwood Castle and Spa. The castle and grounds are stunning, with beautiful woodland and countryside walks on the doorstep, though it would be helpful if the hotel provided a map of the routes. The spa is simple but effective; we booked using a pre-arrival offer and both found our treatments very good. The restaurant food was delicious and we enjoyed everything we ate, and breakfast was also very good (weekday cooked-to-order, weekend buffet). However, we were slightly irritated that many evening menu items carried small supplements despite booking a 2-course deal, and this wasn’t clearly highlighted beforehand. They were small amounts, but still seemed strange. We were also travelling with our dog and found that you can request breakfast outside so dogs can join you, otherwise your furry friend needs to remain in the room. Our room, unfortunately, was not very well cleaned: we found belongings from a previous guest and used toiletries in the bathroom, which was disappointing for a 4-star property. On the plus side, the hotel is great for dogs, with lots of space to walk and explore. We noticed several weddings during our stay, and it feels as though the venue is primarily focused on weddings, with remaining rooms filled by other guests. This wasn’t a problem for us, but it did mean parts of the woodland were restricted. Overall, a beautiful setting and good food and spa, but housekeeping and some communication to improve.
