The hotel in general was cold, in our room the radiators did not work at all, temp -2 outside, . We asked twice for heating and eventually given 2 fan heaters, but only one worked. When you pay good money for a hotel you expect it to be comfortable and warm, this was cold !

Room was dusty, dated and very 90s decor. Heating was not working, could not call reception as phone was not working. The thermostat fell off the wall when I touched it (held on with white masking tape). Iron was dusty, room was cold without heating but reception gave me a small fan heater which was too noisy to keep onto sleep which meant I woke up freezing (it was during a cold snap and was frosty outside).

During our stay (6 days) in Birmingham, the weather was freezing, around 0 degree and minor in evening time. However, the heating system of the Hotel was down for 4 days. When we reported to the reception, they had promised to follow but in vain. Then, different reception staff told us different reasons why their heating system was down. It is quite unacceptable. Fortunately, in the last 2 days, one of the night staff provided a portable heater to us. No apology was received from the hotel so far when we asked the update of the maintenance at the front desk. It seems the heating problem is a normal situation of the hotel. We are very disappointed of their service and follow up manner.

Whilst not unclean, rooms were a little tired and dated however, well priced and good access via Hagley road into the city centre. Great dedicated car parking onsite, although chargeable reasonable price for Birmingham. Good accomodation in comparison to some of the more expensive chain hotels. Staff very courteous and helpful. Nice pub serving Bar food and Drinks.

The staff were brilliant - very friendly and welcoming. The food in the evening was really good and excellent value for money. The bar was well presented with quality products. The room was decent and comfortable. The only let down was breakfast. I am sad to say in this review, in my experience, the breakfast was NOT (when I had it) value for money. The coffee machine sounded like it was on its last legs, coffee was weak, poor and undrinkable - I had to use the sachet of dried coffee to make a cup. There was no fruit juice - I was told 'we don't have orange juice', there was a bar with 200 bottles of it 20 feet away. The toaster didn't work well. Eggs appeared to have been cooked 30 minutes before and had gone hard and discoloured. The sausages were OK but, only OK. The rest of the buffet looked a bit cheap and thrown together. I would 100% still stay at this hotel again, because the previous night and overnight experience exceeded my expectations; and it was above par and value for money. However, I wouldn't have the breakfast as this was significantly subpar in my experience this week, which was a shame as everything else had been so good. I think the owners need to invest in a better breakfast offer or, don't offer it. Fruit juice from a wholesaler is less than £1 per carton for 10 or 12 servings, cook the eggs to order (you will not be throwing away inedible uneaten rubber), lease a new coffee machine. Small things make a big difference for your guests.

Good hotel at reasonable price just outside city centre. Large comfortable and clean bedroom with good facilities. Very good cooked and continental breakfast. Only downside was the hotel has no lift and quite a long walk from reception to bedroom up stairs and winding corridors. We did get lost on one occasion

Nice clean room, was upgraded to an Executive room which was a nice bonus. No air conditioning and it was extremely warm in the room. A fan was provided. Reception gracefully gave us 2 jugs of milk for tea and were as kind and courteous as always! Bathroom was stocked with towels, shower gel and some lotions and a bar of hand soap. There was a breakfast option for £13.50, which we chose not to have this time. Check out was a simple card drop box. We greatly enjoyed our stay!

Terrible place. Tired and in need of renovation. The room was cold and there was a sign on the wall stating that you had to ring reception to turn on/the heating. I did this and was told they don't switch on the heating until October! We checked out immediately - waste of money and best avoided.

Room very old fashioned and dirty (someone needs to learn how to clean mirrors!) we were told that our rooms were the refurbished ones? looking at all the stains on the walls I really don't think so. Hot water coming out of cold tap, told staff 3 times during our stay but just said they will report it to maintenance upon check out, they do not replenish or service your room and we were not told on check in, we just got told we should have read the welcome pack in the room (whoever reads them?) we asked for toilet rolls, clean towels etc... at 3pm, we finally got them at 7pm. Not a pleasant stay which spoiled our annual trip to HOYS - will NEVER stay here again and I suggest other people avoid!

Bedroom area however was tired & dated. Quite a bit of dust & cobwebs on upper parts of the walls.Floors very creaky. There was a wedding on which we weren’t warned about & it was noisy. The music was turned off at twelve but then lots of noise with guests moving about. It is an old building & the floors & stairs are very creaky. It could be a beautiful hotel but it is badly in need of an upgrade in the rooms & communal areas. However the location was good for access to city centre & the staff were very friendly.

There is nothing I can say I liked, room was smelly, had mould across window behind curtains, bathrooms don't have mixed water tap, dark and dingy feel , my main reason was to have a decent sleep at night and was not after staying in the room, but hotel lacks on basics health and safety as the room had very bad mould and smell and no one from maintenance was checking for months I will say.

This hotel is located about a 20 mins walk to Broad Street and the Utilita Arena so ideal if going to an event there. Hotel is clean, the staff are very welcoming and helpful. Room was clean & comfortable. Breakfast was lovely, with plenty of choice - cooked breakfast, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, pastries & toast plus some other options available on the menu. The buffet was regularly replenished. Would consider staying again if we book tickets for an event in the future.

I really like this place - it’s not perfect but it’s still a fantastic place to stay. It’s always spotless. The beds are just amazing. Big windows for lots of light. Even the rooms that haven’t been refurbished yet have a nice old world charm about them!

I’m normally a fan of Best Western hotels, they’re usually in some old, interesting and quirky buildings. Although the frontage of this hotel is quite appealing the main accommodation is somewhat soulless and rundown 60’s vibe. However the main concern was the cleanliness of the room, especially the bathroom. It looked as though it hadn’t had anything more than a cursory wipe over in years. The toilet was constantly running, the plastic bath panel was damaged and there was mould around the edges of the floor. The whole place needs a good clean and uplift. Which is a shame as it’s in a fairly convenient location close to Edgbaston and a short tram ride into town. The staff were helpful and the breakfast enjoyable.

If you are looking for a hotel with charm and an old world feel, this is it. While it's not one of those chain hotels, it's got a comfy, cozy feeling with lots of history (Tolkien stayed here). The rooms are very comfortable with lots of charm & character. I can't say enough about how nice & welcoming the staff is either. Top notch. Order the morning breakfast, well worth the cost. Very close to Uni of Birmingham & about 2 miles from Bull Ring, downtown area. Right on transit routes, so no need for a car. Very close by a grocery store. Honestly, couldn't be happier with my choice. If you are looking for a chain hotel, this isn't it, but if you are looking for something different, this is the place for you. 6 out of 5 stars. AMAZING

Good location for the Utilia Arena, 15 mins walk. Friendly check in, good sized clean room. Breakfast staff were very polite, food was excellent, good choice, cooked properly with everything available. Only downside was not being able to open the windows, fan helped, it was very hot!

The hotel was a lot better than I expected. Great value and a wonderful old, historical building. I really liked the interior, there must be so much history there. Check in staff member was friendly, but forgot to tell us anything about breakfast, we had to go back and ask later. Unfortunately, our room wasn’t in the main hotel building, but an unattractive block out the back. Still, the room was quiet and spacious with loads of storage. Very clean although could do with some updating. Great nights sleep. The only downside was the toilet seat which was ill fitting and slipped around all over the place. Plus the fact we could hear our neighbours through the bathroon vent, like they were in the same room! Excellent breakfast, everything you could want and good quality ingredients. Overall, surprisingly good stay. Close to some local restaurants. I can recommend Soofi, a Persian restaurant which was wonderful, 5 mins walk away.

The hotel was a lot better than I expected. Great value and a wonderful old, historical building. I really liked the interior, there must be so much history there. Unfortunately, our room wasn’t in the main hotel building, but an unattractive block out the back. Still, the room was quiet and spacious with loads of storage. Very clean although could do with some updating. Great nights sleep. The only downside was the toilet seat which was ill fitting and slipped around all over the place. Plus the fact we could hear our neighbours through the bathroon vent, like they were in the same room! Excellent breakfast, everything you could want and good quality ingredients. Overall, surprisingly good stay. Close to some local restaurants. I can recommend Soofi, a Persian restaurant which was wonderful, 5 mins walk away.

Good hotel at reasonable price just outside city centre. Large comfortable and clean bedroom with good facilities. Very good cooked and continental breakfast. Only downside was the hotel has no lift and quite a long walk from reception to bedroom up stairs and winding corridors. We did get lost on one occasion

Nice clean room, was upgraded to an Executive room which was a nice bonus. No air conditioning and it was extremely warm in the room. A fan was provided. Reception gracefully gave us 2 jugs of milk for tea and were as kind and courteous as always! Bathroom was stocked with towels, shower gel and some lotions and a bar of hand soap. There was a breakfast option for £13.50, which we chose not to have this time. Check out was a simple card drop box. We greatly enjoyed our stay!

Staff were helpful when arounda although local knowledge and assistance was lacking. Reception desk no always manned so had to call and wait for staff. Its an interesting building but it is showing its age in the rooms. Fold out bed mattress for child was in really poor condition. Metal bars/slats were not covered. Kitchen not running over a weekend was surprising.

Reception guy super welcoming, room was ready on arrival, kitchen had just closed but they made food for me, bar open, kept checking all was ok with myself and colleague, breakfast staff were super nice and helpful, very accommodating. parking secure and only £15 for whole of next day, very pleasant staff and stay.

This was my 2nd stay at Plough & Harrow. I love the quaint hotel, roughly midway between the university and the city center. The building is showing its age, but it is perfectly fine. The best part of the hotel is the staff. They were supremely helpful, particularly Yana. I also enjoyed the delicious breakfast. It offered enough variety that I didn't repeat my meal over the several days I was there.

Room was clean & comfortable. Breakfast was lovely, with plenty of choice - cooked breakfast, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, pastries & toast plus some other options available on the menu. The buffet was regularly replenished. Would consider staying again if we book tickets for an event in the future.

We loved that it was right near a Morrisons to get bits and bobs. All the staff were friendly and accommodating. It was about a 20-30 minute walk to New Street, with the weather we opted for Uber (both eats and rides) and the location was easy enough for drivers to locate. One staff member gave us one of our two nights for free as the tv wasn’t working in the room and we felt that was a really nice gesture that not many hotels would do. The door to our room was quite dodgy, you really had to slam it shut for it to actually shut and it would make a rather loud noise, we feared waking up the other hotel guests. The hotel room itself was pretty standard, with a lovely big window that let in plenty of light and had a nice view of the main hotel area, only real downside would be it gathered quite a bit of condensation, that could be because we didn’t have the heating on but it went away when we opened the window slightly.

Great dedicated car parking onsite, although chargeable reasonable price for Birmingham. Good accomodation in comparison to some of the more expensive chain hotels. Staff very courteous and helpful. Nice pub serving Bar food and Drinks.

If you are looking for a hotel with charm and an old world feel, this is it. While it's not one of those chain hotels, it's got a comfy, cozy feeling with lots of history (Tolkien stayed here). The rooms are very comfortable with lots of charm & character. I can't say enough about how nice & welcoming the staff is either. Top notch. Order the morning breakfast, well worth the cost. Very close to Uni of Birmingham & about 2 miles from Bull Ring, downtown area. Right on transit routes, so no need for a car. Very close by a grocery store. We paid 22.00 for 2 breakfast. It was 10.00am bfast did not finish till 10.30. No bacon. Fried eggs looked dry no hash browns. Dried beans. No plates. Asked for fresh eggs and bacon obviously plates. Plates. Came. Eggs. Which went cold as took at least 15 mins for 4 slices of bacon between myself and partner. Breakfast area should always. Have the food regardless of the time. I kept asking the waitress how long for the bacon. Not good at all

Disappointed to learn there is no restaurant available at the weekend, and the breakfast service was very poor. The parking was an expensive addition for those not booking direct with the hotel.

The staff were brilliant - very friendly and welcoming. The food in the evening was really good and excellent value for money. The bar was well presented with quality products. The room was decent and comfortable. The only let down was breakfast. I am sad to say in this review, in my experience, the breakfast was NOT (when I had it) value for money. The coffee machine sounded like it was on its last legs, coffee was weak, poor and undrinkable - I had to use the sachet of dried coffee to make a cup. There was no fruit juice - I was told 'we don't have orange juice', there was a bar with 200 bottles of it 20 feet away. The toaster didn't work well. Eggs appeared to have been cooked 30 minutes before and had gone hard and discoloured. The sausages were OK but, only OK. The rest of the buffet looked a bit cheap and thrown together. I would 100% still stay at this hotel again, because the previous night and overnight experience exceeded my expectations; and it was above par and value for money. However, I wouldn't have the breakfast as this was significantly subpar in my experience this week, which was a shame as everything else had been so good. I think the owners need to invest in a better breakfast offer or, don't offer it. Fruit juice from a wholesaler is less than £1 per carton for 10 or 12 servings, cook the eggs to order (you will not be throwing away inedible uneaten rubber), lease a new coffee machine. Small things make a big difference for your guests.

Had to pay £15 to park in their car park because I booked through hotels.com but apparently parking is free if you book direct which is annoying. Was a fantastic break went there for a day and stayed there a week. Such great staff and truly helpful Nothing was to much for them! Place was so clean and tidy and not even a single noise at all. I could see the car from my bedroom window and knew it was safe. Never had any food so can’t comment on that but it smelled good 👍 Also 2 minutes from the town centre. Totally recommend it and I will be returning there very soon enjoy your break uall xx
