Hotel San Carlos

Hotel was very nice to stay in. Although the pool was closed we still had a good time and would love to stay here again

We love staying here for the great location and historic nature of the hotel. Sadly, the pool has been closed for some time which is the only reason I didn't give five stars. The staff are always great and the rooms are very clean and comfortable.

Perfectly located for walking to the PHX Arena. Lots of cute shops, restaurants and coffee nearby as well as a grocery store and CVS. The hotel is very old, large step up to the bathroom, old school like 1899 decor. If I go back I’d want to get a Star room like Mae West or Marilyn Monroe. Ice is on the 3rd floor. Business center/ gym/ Pool were closed.

The facility is older, and you do not have to worry about rooms being overly cold. This is probably the downside of the facility. The "office center" consisted of one working computer and was very hot to work in. This area was the workout room, which was limited. I need to print out a bunch of documents for an appointment. Which is the reason I was there. The location, because of my needs, was very suitable and served my purpose, plus it was very reasonable in cost. The staff was very helpful since I live in Mexico, and I had a piece of mail that did not arrive during my stay. The staff was willing to forward that mail in an envelope I left them, and they followed up with me once they received it. All in all, I would stay there again if I had similar needs there again.

Very annoying that the only parking available is like 2 blocks away and you have to pay for it. If you’re had a heads up it was like this I would not have been so annoyed. Also none of the outlets worked, there was extension cords everywhere so unsafe and not up to code

This is a bait and switch. They advertise a pool but it appears to have been closed for quite a while. There are hardly any amenities and many of the large gathering areas are closed off. My guess is they have not recovered from COVID and are running a skeleton operation until they have to shut down. We booked this hotel specifically to use the pool. The front desk staff seemed used to disappointing people because when you arrive, it's not what you were advertised.

There were no thermostats in the rooms. The temperature you get - is what you get. The pool was closed, they didn't inform any of us that this was going to be the circumstance. Very poor judgment considering the temperatures for the week were over 105 degrees and no thermostats in the rooms. This made it a very hot and not able to enjoy. The rooms were extremely clean though. The old building did have some charm.

Absolutely NO parking, so it's an additional $15 per night to "safely" park at a nearby public parking structure, a block away. Also no individual room control of thermostat. It just blows continuously. Great if you're looking for a kitchy historic place, but other than that, you'll get more for your money finding a Motel 6 in the suburbs.

This is my 4th year in a row staying when I visit Phoenix. It’s a nice historic hotel that is located near the Convention Center. They keep this place very cleaned and maintained. The staff is wonderful and they remember me when I come back. The only complaint I really have is that the pool wasn’t open. Something that would have been lovely to have on hot July days in Arizona.

Stayed one night, going to a concert at the van Buren. Convient walking distance and close to train for airport. I know it is a historic hotel but they should update chair and bed in room, uncomfortable and lumpy. The shower temp was too hot and hard to adjust. The channel selection on the TV was weird. Felt like I was in the late 1900s, only infomercials, QVC, and old reruns

Location was good, close Chase Field, walking distance. Parking close by $18. As soon as you come in, there's a smell, distinguished of an old place. We had to leave early cause we could hear people talking near by. Beds were comfortable though. For 1 night it was ok.

Room was clean and had no smell. Love the history of this hotel.

Central ac, it was hot through the whole night.The bathroom had hairballs in it when we got there. Not the greatest but it was ok for the night.

The room was very clean. This very historic building was very entertaining. There are many pictures to look at and read about the history of the hotel. Parking was questionable since you are downtown Phoenix, but manageable. Plenty of places to eat on your way to watch a concert or professional game.

Everything was great love the history and it was clean and everyone was friendly.

Poorly taken care of. Smells of cigarettes everywhere. Beds are hard, worse than a decent motel.

Its an older hotel with an interesting history and near good restaurants but elements of the room are starting to feel dirty/grimey.

The location is great but the property is run down and old, its furniture is antiquated and the carpet smells.

The property is old and in much need of some sort of remodeling, no microwave, asked for hot water for tea no one could help me, but the worst part was we found a bedbug on top of the bed. I have pictures, they removed one room night from my bill but I believe the should have refunded both nights. $400 for a night on a room where we found a bug I’m sure everyone agrees is too much

The walls are PAPER THIN. My next door neighbor decided to have a loud / laugh out loud discussion at 5:00 am on Saturday morning after I just got in at 12:00 am that day from the ballet. Love old hotels but will probably not stay again for that reason.

The water pressure in the shower was basically a trickle, there was no refrigerator in the room, got scalded multiple times taking a shower whenever someone in a different room flushed a toilet.

The hotel is conveniently located. However, the internet is unreliable. While there is Wi-Fi on each floor, the signal is very weak and often disconnects. I asked the reception about this, and they explained that it’s due to the high occupancy of the hotel.

Location and staff were great. No thermostat in the room though, so our room was quite hot which made it very difficult to sleep unfortunately.

The hotel is older, but still nice. Rooms are outdated, but not bad. No safe or fridge. No way to adjust temperature of the room, but temperature was comfortable for us. Only real complaint was the shower water kept moving from cold to very hot.

The staff were professional and friendly. The location is great if you’re staying for a concert or convention. However, there is limited parking and the parking garage is on the other side of the block. The trolley is noisy at night and the walls are super thin. It was hard to sleep especially whenever other guests are talking in the hallways; the sound echoes throughout the building. Other than that, the hotel was perfect for our one night stay for our concert.

It's an interesting, old hotel, but not good for long stays or business travel. The wifi was so weak I had to find somewhere else to conduct my work because it kept cutting out. There was also a lack of working outlets for charging my devices. In the bathroom, the high-amp outlet for the hair dryer was above the medicine cabinet, and I had to stand on the toilet to reach it (I'm 5'3"). Finally, there isn't temperature control in each room- mine was warm enough that I found it difficult to sleep and the only temperature moderator was a ceiling fan.

Beds were like old spring mattresses ?!? Pillows were terrible!! Bring your own !

Most ‘convenient’ Parking is in a ramp 1 block from the hotel entrance and not validated. Historical building, but the room was small and bathroom tiny. Easy ride from hotel to the airport with Uber Waymo or Lyft. But Waymo might not get you to the right airline if using terminal 4… Walking distance for Suns or Diamondbacks. Nice Mexican restaurant with very good food at the hotel and lots of great options for bars and food within 2 blocks. Staff was very nice and also helpful. No ghost encounters…☹️

Shower was terrible, near scalding water would come on when you’re in middle of showering, and shower knob was so difficult to turn on. No thermostat in room.

We came into Phoenix to see a concert and since this hotel was right around the corner from the venue I figured it'd be a cool place to stay. It's an old hotel and it definitely looks like it. I'm no professional but I'm sure there's a way to keep the historic charm while still keeping it updated. The bed was really, really firm and if I hadn't driven 700 miles it probably would have been uncomfortable but after being in the car for 10 hours it wasn't the worst. The room was clean, the linens were clean, and there was a TV. What really made it amazing, and why I'd stay here again, was the staff and the location. The person at the front desk when we got in at 5AM was so, so kind. They helped us get into our room quickly, told us where to park, and was really lovely. I was really sad we only saw them during check-in. There were a lot of homeless people around but none of them bothered us as we walked around the area exploring. There’s plenty to do within a 10 minute walk which is awesome but the pub downstairs was amazing. Overall, I'd stay again even though it's an old building in need of some updating.

In the midnight around ４, hotel staff rashed in my room. Hotel manager said,it's only mistake. I can't believe it. It might robber.

Tony at the front desk was fantastic, held our bags since we arrived early and even gave us an early check-in! He was very kind and accommodating, a stellar example of service. Made the stay even better, thank you!

No air conditioning. Super outdated and stuffy. No parking. Disinterested staff.

The San Carlos was the right price for what I needed for a weeklong business trip. The room was small and mostly outdated. The TV was not a flat screen. There was no refrigerator in the room. The upholstery was on the older side. All that said, it served its purpose. A place to crash at night that was within walking distance of the Phoenix Convention Center. It was clean. The staff was pleasant at the front desk and honored my No Service Requested sign throughout the week. Certainly not a 5-star hotel but if you need a place to rest your head and don't care about amenities, this hotel is a viable option.

The walls were paper thin and so it was impossible to sleep. You heard everything. The peep hole on our door had a tissue stuffed in it to cover the whole. And the staff kept my ID which derailed my plans for the eveningz

Love the historic feel, beds very comfortable. Most of the desk staff were rude when asked questions. Our room window was so dirty, could barely see out in day time. Our room was kept clean & stocked. This could be an amazing hotel with some customer service training & a window cleaning.

Fun and close to everything

The location was great, and within walking distance of our concert venue. The only downfall was parking. The parking garage was around the block and no access through hotel.

The room was very clean. This very historic building was very entertaining. There are many pictures to look at and read about the history of the hotel. Parking was questionable since you are downtown Phoenix, but manageable. Plenty of places to eat on your way to watch a concert or professional game.

Was in Phoenix for a basketball convention. This hotel was perfect for my stay. It was in close walking distance to the Convention Center. The room was very clean. Housekeeping is top notch. the hotel is an older hotel but priced cheaper than hotels in the area.

Great property. Awesome nostalgic memorabilia around the halls. Loved the vibe and the staff is amazing. I left something behind by mistake that is very sentimental and the staff had it sent my way the same day I contacted them. Im so glad I booked . Definitely would stay again.

This historic hotel is walking distance to so many great attractions. The light rail runs right in front of the hotel. There’s an awesome pub right next door. The only downside is no parking…so plan accordingly.

I went to the baseball stadium and it is very near, almost within walking distance. Plus there are restaurants and bars next to it, it was very convenient.

Native AZ. Worked downtown from 1998 to 2017. My favorite hangout was this corner. It is on sad shape today. This classic hotel needs a revamp. I hope our President does tremendously well. I love downtown PHX but not this last trip. Parking is atrocious.

Great location

I have stayed at Hotel San Carlos several times. This is an historic old Hotel with tons of history. It is a clean, quiet no frills hotel. Take some time and read the history posted around the hotel. Some of the postings are fairly odd. Rumor has it this hotel is haunted. I never had an encounter! Here is a little bonus. On the third floor is access to a great rooftop patio. This hotel does not have a bar/restaurant inside. There is a fantastic Mexican themed restaurant called Centrico attached to the hotel and a great Irish Pub called Seamus McCaffrey’s next door. The fish fry is exceptional.

Love the hotel San Carlos. Rooms were clean staff very friendly and helpful. The food in the Mexican restaurant downstairs was very good. Within walking distance to many bars and restaurants. If you’re looking for a lot of amenities go elsewhere. There’s no mini fridge or coffee maker in the room, but there’s a coffee shop across the street, Dunkin’ Donuts and star bucks are within walking distance. My husband and I loved it there, vintage and different from your typical hotels.

Good hotel visit. Wish there was a bar/restaurant in the San Carlos hotel. It is a small room, but it works well. Might visit the next time.

Super cool historical hotel. Clean and quaint rooms in style for the time period adding to the charm. Would like to go back just to explore all the historical info on each floor! Only complaint is the inconsistency of the hotel restaurant hours. The pub nextdoor had good food and plenty of bars and restaurants to walk to.

Poor AC, uncomfortable bed, you can hear everything happening in your neighbor's rooms and in the hallway. So uncomfortable, we drove home for the night. The restaurant was delicious! Would eat there again

The San Carlos is clearly an older hotel with many historic features. Some of the basic creature comforts could use an update, such as the shower heads. There was a fitness room, but it was not air conditioned and I visited when the outdoor temps were 102F. A majority of the lobby was closed off, though the restaurant did open on my last night there and served delicious authentic regional food.

Being in a place that classic Hollywood celebrities have frequented during their visits to the 48th State was just amazing. To know that I may have walked the same halls as legends such as Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, & even Humphrey Bogart is just levels of awesome. Outside of the building, there are gold stars with the names & signatures of these legends, similar to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Next door is Seamus McCaffrey’s, an Irish pub that was once part of the hotel itself before becoming what it is today. Delicious food there, btw. Anthony at the front desk is really knowledgeable & took me on a short tour of the lobby, showing me different areas & talking about what used to be there before Phoenix grew into the Metropolitan city we know now. He showed me pictures of celebrities & even of some of the employees that had worked there for decades before they passed away. He did mention the rumors of the hotel being haunted, but I’ll be honest with you: I didn’t experience anything myself, though I admittedly only really slept there, so maybe I was sleeping when the experiences happened. But even if it is haunted, this place is still amazing. The bed was perfect. Nice & firm, which made me drift off to sleep with such ease. According to their website, it’s a Serta Sleep mattress. Loved the atmosphere, the proximity to our event, the staff was courteous, friendly and helpful. Made us feel welcome without fussing over us. The room was clean and comfortable. Delicious food at Centrico, and we were quickly attended to and served when we shared that we had a pending event with limited window of time. The shrimp tacos were delicious. Later, after the event we had a delicious night nosh at Seamus McCaffrey's Irish Pub one door down—vegetarian Boxty in a cream wine sauce. Fabulous. Only issue was metered parking. We navigated through that—and we will be back again!

We were in town for a Diamondbacks game. Location was great. Staff very friendly. Disappointed in lack of amenities- pool closed, no restaurant or coffee shop on site. Tub without handrails. There is a great donut place across the street.
