It simply is no longer a full service hotel and is only staffed to a bedroom booking only level. The Expedia site did not make this clear at any time.No meal service including hot drinks or breakfast. A bar in name only,no bar staff. The rotating front dek staff were as helpful as they could be,especially Sebastian, but we should have been aware tgat yhe oroperty was on care and maintenance only. A pity,as the location was super and the ancient property itself must have been fantastic when it was operational.

Great location right in centre of town. Hotel itself is in major need of a refurb. Very dated and no food or drink available. Our room was extremely noise as it faced the road. Traffic noise and moving the bins at 7am woke us up.

The hotel is an old historic coaching inn in a prime location of Shrewsbury town. It is an inn I have known my whole life and finally got to stay in. It’s a fabulous location, parking in car park 2 could be improved. The hotel could go with an upgrade in some elements, expected due to its age. It is hugely disappointing that the history of the hotel, the guests is big made more of (Charles Dickens, Jenny Lind). The bar was closed due to a licensing issue which we were not aware of. There was a lack of Christmas spirit or ambience another element easily improved. The reception staff were barely communicative, as were the breakfast staff. I don’t understand why the communication skills are not a part of the job/role, after a long journey a welcome would have been nice, an explanation of the car park system or just any communication would have been professional and expected for such a hotel in such a location. Sad that we had that experience. The food was good, the room delightful, clean comfortable warm. So much potential!

On the positive side, the room was very clean and comfortable, and hotel and dining room staff were friendly and helpful. However the lack of a lift was literally a pain, as I have bad arthritis and my room was on the top floor. Parking was extremely sparse. Overall the hotel looked tired and in need of a facelift inside. Also not ideal to have the doors locked at 11pm.

Hotel needs updated yes it’s an old building built in 14th. Century lots of history to this hotel but the smell in all part of the hotel is not very nice to breath in needs a good clean and decorated throughout very dirty in most places won’t stay there again

Our room, bedding and towels were clean although very noisy with traffic at the front of the building. The general areas within the hotel were not clean and were shabby. Kitchens had closed in May so no food available at all. Although our room was clean we were not happy with the rest of the hotel. Would not stay here again.

Very dated. I know its a historical building but rooms bathrooms n hallways need renovation. hallways smelt of sewerage, toilet seat dangerous, shower very old and covered in limescale. Staff very pleasant. Location great.

Very dilapidated, needs huge investment to bring it up to any sort of standard. Threadbare carpets, corridors smell of drains. Staff obviously embarrassed/demoralised. Such a shame as it could be a magnificent building.

We stayed last year because of the location for 1 night and thought this year would be better, but unfortunately it was worse. The bath had rust all around the plug area and the mat to stand on for the shower in the bath was black with mould. The carpet in one corner of the room had a frayed patch and the carpets leading up the stairs to the room from reception are all frayed and worn. The staff are helpful but the hotel needs serious TLC. I don’t think we will stay again next year. Linda. North Wales.

A comfortable bed and a spacious room but the bathroom needed a few fixes- the toilet handle was loose and the shower head was loose. The tv was tiny and at the furthest corner of the room from the bed. Only one chair at the table instead of two and the WiFi was rather slow.

Room whilst clean was dated and well worn and the mattress on the bed was dreadful which felt like it had a hole in the middle of it. It was a last minute booking and the cheapest of an expensive group but still a lot of money for a single room

Low cost hotel but the room & bathroom was clean. Clean sheets. Pillows were a bit large, I like thin pillows, the second pillow in the wardrobe was better. It was warm weather and slept with the window open, not sure how warm this room would be in winter though. Curtain blacked out all the light and the shower was powerful. Not modern, a bit tatty but to be expected and priced right. Priced competitively really. Car park small fee, but still in budget price range. I'd stay again but it's not something I'd look forward to.

Receptionist at check in was disinterested. Wasn't told the heating in room wasn't working. I only found out when i went to complain the room was cold. I got given an temporary heater. There was excessive external noise from the street outside as windows did not seal closed. no secondary glazing. So with noise and cold drafts coming in the window. Even with curtains closed and heater on. Didn’t make any difference. Checked out early and cut trip short.

The pictures are an utter lie. I think they must have sold off the antique furniture, leaving the room a total mystery with lights in odd places. No place to put clothes other than the closet. The WiFi was abysmal, sometimes working, sometimes not. The front desk has no cash, so if you need to break a note into coin, forget it. The parking charge is reasonable at 5£ a night. However, they no longer offer breakfast, so you must find something open- and the coffee houses close by aren’t open until 9 am.

We were shocked to see no bar or restaurant open at this hotel. Very limited staff. Room curtains ripped. Apparently they have no drinks licence holder at present. Would like to of been made aware of this before booking.

The Lion Hotel is a warm, welcoming, cheap and cheerful hotel. Service at reception is excellent and staff are so friendly and helpful. If there was an award for a hotel with the creakiest stairs and floors this could win it! Interior is dated and needs a refresh. Rooms are comfortable and clean. Location was perfect for our weekend in Shrewsbury. Customer service is excellent. When we return to Shrewsbury for another weekend break, we'll definitely consider coming back to The Lion Hotel.

It is a very old hotel , and I expected lots of creakiness but it was fine , a really interesting building in the town centre with a car park . The only downside was the lack of breakfast ( no food available at all ) but it is surrounded by food outlets and pubs

The hotel is in a great location close to shops, bars and restaurants. It has on site parking which is a great bonus for a town center location. The building is very old and has many period features. The room was spacious and the bed comfortable the furniture was old fashioned and in keeping with the age of the property. The breakfast which was included in the price was very good with plenty of options including fruit and cereal, pastries and toast, full English, tea coffee and juices. I also noted that gluten free options were available. Now the downsides - the circulation spaces are very tired and in desperate need of refurbishment the carpets are worn and there is a musty smell that comes with age. There are a lot of stairs so the property would not be suitable for less mobile or wheelchair guests. The restaurant and bar are currently closed but apparently the owner is working towards reopening them. I would definitely stay again as the price I paid offered good value for money and I don’t expect properties of this age to be perfect.

Great location right in centre of town. Hotel itself is in major need of a refurb. Very dated and no food or drink available. Our room was extremely noise as it faced the road. Traffic noise and moving the bins at 7am woke us up.

Easy access to all shops, restaurants. Also close to Shrewsbury abbey. Saint Mary church and Shrewsbury prison. Only took 10 minutes to walk from the train station to the hotel.

The hotel is an old historic coaching inn in a prime location of Shrewsbury town. It is an inn I have known my whole life and finally got to stay in. It’s a fabulous location, parking in car park 2 could be improved. The hotel could go with an upgrade in some elements, expected due to its age. It is hugely disappointing that the history of the hotel, the guests is big made more of (Charles Dickens, Jenny Lind). The bar was closed due to a licensing issue which we were not aware of. There was a lack of Christmas spirit or ambience another element easily improved. The reception staff were barely communicative, as were the breakfast staff. I don’t understand why the communication skills are not a part of the job/role, after a long journey a welcome would have been nice, an explanation of the car park system or just any communication would have been professional and expected for such a hotel in such a location. Sad that we had that experience. The food was good, the room delightful, clean comfortable warm. So much potential!

It simply is no longer a full service hotel and is only staffed to a bedroom booking only level. The Expedia site did not make this clear at any time.No meal service including hot drinks or breakfast. A bar in name only,no bar staff. The rotating front dek staff were as helpful as they could be,especially Sebastian, but we should have been aware tgat yhe oroperty was on care and maintenance only. A pity,as the location was super and the ancient property itself must have been fantastic when it was operational.

Had a great 3 night stay here. Hotel is 10 min walk from station and central for shops, bars and restaurants. Staff are lovely - very helpful. I had a quiet and comfortable single room at the back of the hotel - good size for a single and a bath tub is always welcome. Breakfast (included in the price) was great: fresh fruit salad and yogurts, plenty of cereals and pastries and a delicious hot breakfast cooked to order. Would recommend this hotel and hope to stay again.

Perfect town centre location. Kitchens closed since 3rd May ( Not informed by Expedia as asked by hotel) had we been informed we would have cancelled and booked somewhere else, so no breakfast. Reason given by friendly staff was owner wanted room only option. We did get £6.50 x 2 reduction and paid £5 for parking . Hotel was very dated with wooden floors and worn carpets to stairs which needed a good dust. I wouldn't stay again.

ideally situated in the center of town, plenty of restaurants, pubs, good shopping. car parking on site ,£5 per night, great value. Rooms were spacious, warm and very comfortable, decor typical of the age of the property. excellent value for money with a cooked English breakfast included. Web site needs updating, no bar, no restaurant but plenty of choice in the area

A rather historic building with it's charm and character unfortunately it's looking rather tired in places and could use some serious updating and repairing, based on the cost of the room it was a very reasonable trip and the arrangements for breakfast were very well organised

Carpets were worn and torn in places The whole interior is in need of brightening up and refurbishing. I paid and booked for bed and breakfast but was told they have not done food since April. Actually I was quite pleased as I dread to think about the state of the kitchens !

The place is really run down, bathroom not clean, soap scum and rubbish left around, stains on the bathroom door Carpet has been burnt next to the bed or very heavily soiled and not cleaned Marks on the walls Not easy to navigate around Complete waste of money over £140 per night

Arrived at the hotel, parking space was found and off to the reception to check in, the member of staff who checked us is was quick and efficient but we had to come back and get our door cards re-activated as they did not work first time round. The room was set for one person and not two, so another trip to the reception to get that addressed. Now this is NOT the hotels fault by we suffered muppets running around at about 01:30 / 02:00 like it was a playground, not good at all and when the porter was informed, it was sorry, but guests can get a bit high spirited sometimes.
