Prince Rupert Hotel

This hotel is sort of country lodge chic, meets modern bathrooms. The customer service was great (even though they were sold out). A very central location so great for getting around, but obviously a bit noisy until the pubs close. I'd check the parking situation with them beforehand - I didn't and then ended up a bit away as I drove to the hotel and couldn't see it but there is a private carpark nearby.

This very historical property is very old, atmospheric and querky. It's in a central position in Shrewsbury & has its own bar and restaurant. Lot's of pubs and restaurants available in Shrewsbury town centre. We stayed a friday night & the pub next door played loud music until closing time at 11pm so be aware if you have a room at the front. The breakfast was cooked to order and contential options were also available. Parking is available (£10 p/night) though the hotel is a 5 minute walk away

Staff were excellent both at check in and any time of the day. Breakfast was very good and the lounge area was very comfortable. The hotel is in the middle of Shrewsbury so access to all areas is very easy . Good internet access and the bedroom comfortable with a bath as well. Evening meal the restaurant was also good. Would recommend this hotel.

Need to get the lift fixed apart from that everything good

Decent hotel in a good location. Only criticism is the car park - you need to leave car park by 11:30am or use pay and display to extend stay. Staff helpful and friendly 🙂

The hotel is located in the middle of old Shrewsbury so is ideal for wandering around the town. However we arrived by car and the hotel car park is a short walk away. It is necessary to drop your bags off first and then park the car and walk back. Access to the front of the hotel is via narrow cobbled streets which can be confusing.

All the staff were friendly and helpful unfortunately the lift wasn't working all the time we were there. Nice food.

The Rupert had many good points, but there was also a lot that was bad. The staff were excellent. Always friendly and willing to help. The breakfast was also excellent and, once again, the staff were superb. The hotel is ideally placed in the centre of town, and has a lovely historic ambience. The bedroom was always warm. Now the bad. My room was next to a late night beer garden that played very loud music. To be fair, they did move me to a different room, but it made no difference. And they did offer to move me again, but by then I had bought some ear muffs, the type you use when operating loud machinery. They worked, so I decided not to go through the hassle of another move. The toilet didn't flush after MANY attempts. I told reception and they said it was okay, you just need to press the button really hard. You shouldn't have to do that in a 4 star hotel. Eventually, it flushed and would be okay for a day or two, but would then jam again and I would find myself on my hands and knees pressing "really hard". The extraction fan didn't work on day one. A staff member said maintenance would fix it the next day. I was there 11 nights and it was not fixed. The TV was unwatchable for a number of nights 'no signal'. The wi-fi was very hit and miss. Water cold on 1 day. Overall, the main room look jaded and in bad need of an upgrade - e.g. the ancient cheap kettle that took an age to boil. Despite its faults, I would not discount staying there again. Way short of 4 stars, though.

Fabulous restaurant Room was ok. Some areas looking like needing some attention but expect they are working their way through Communal areas very tidy and fresh. Great location. I would advise parking on outside edge of town as. Nightmare one way system Only 20 mins to walk across the town.

Staff were excellent, very efficient breakfast lady but, we couldn’t make her smile 😊. Our room was comfortable but the view was terrible, overlooking the back, the bathroom was the one of the best we have come across for the price, cleanliness was 5star, well done the chamber person. Breakfast again, served at your table with proper tea pot and milk jugs. We will certainly return and are planning our next trip soon. Thank you Prince Rupert well done 👏

Stayed here several times and would stay again . Hotel is a little tired in places but it adds to it’s character but some small repairs would make a difference ( just general maintenance) Rooms vary greatly depending on what part of the hotel you stay in. Staff are usually very friendly and helpful ( our checkin lady was lovely as was the waitress at breakfast) Breakfast is always great quality . Room is clean but can be a bit tired again depending on what part of the hotel. I love this hotel for its character charm and location so would happily stay again

The hotel is old and worn out. It has charm which I think they base their room rates on (quite high). The staff in reception and in the restaurant were really service minded and helpful. My room was next to the ancient lift, which creaked and rumbled until about 1 am. The bathroom was in poor condition, with black mould in one corner, the shower curtain was old and dirty and the shower head was broken. The bedroom had old water stains in one corner, presumably from a leak in the roof and the carpet was stained. The bed (single) was clean and comfortable.

When we booked it said the hotel had parking it didn't mention the car park was a 10 minute walk away. When my partner found the car park the machine said it cost £15, luckily I was talking to another receptionist who told me we had to pay at the hotel not the car park or we would have had to pay twice. The staff when we were checking in also didn't offer me any help with my 2 cases or to show me where the room was although they were giving help to other guests at the same time. Not a good impression of the place.

The room was cold and neglected, the carpet was old and lifted between the bathroom and room. The windows had mould. The kettle was old and rusty. The bed was uncomfortable. The bath wasn’t clean around the plug hole and didn’t hold water when a bath was run. There was mould around the seals of the bath and the silicon was lifted. The windows had mould on the seals at the bottom. The bathroom was very cold.

Only one person on reception so check in slow as she was on phone for several minutes after we arrived. Very friendly but needed more than one person. Room tired and in need of update though bathroom modern. Very slow drain in bath so by end of shower I was mid shin in water. Cobwebs on lamp shades and worrying stain on bedroom wall. Older lady on breakfast room very friendly and very helpful bringing ice when my niece had a nose bleed during breakfast

Check in was good, friendly staff and offered a glass of sherry! Hotel is very historic and could be stunning but needs a lot of investment. It’s very tired and seems to be stuck in a time warp, but having said that everywhere was very clean. The room was a good size with a bathroom off of a lobby area. But although we didn’t check in until 5pm (2 hours after the earliest time of 3pm), the radiators hadn’t been turned on and so the room and bathroom in particular were very cold. The bed was very soft and the pillows very lumpy, way past their best! There was no hot water in the morning which was disappointing as the bath looked very inviting! The breakfast that was included was served in the panelled dining room and was very nice. We mentioned our issues the next morning on checking out but the lady on reception said she didn’t usually work there so could only pass on our message. So all in all, we were disappointed by the hotel which is a shame as the position in Shrewsbury is excellent and it could be an amazing place to stay.

Friendly front of house staff, rooms clean but the bedrooms need an upgrade and so do the communal areas. Bathrooms renovated and very clean. Breakfast was pretty good. Excellent location. VERY hot! central heating on full blast. Would return for a one night stay.

The room was spacious and comfortable. The staff that served breakfast were welcoming, attentive and looked after us very well. The reception staff were helpful and always around if we needed anything. I will definitely be booking in again.

We couldn't fault the cleanliness, service or breakfast choice and quality. However, this is a very old building with very creaky floorboards and thin walls. We heard the people above return and walk around getting ready for bed. We heard the next room snoring, morning alarm going off, tv and water running in the bathroom. Sorry to say we won't be returning.

its in great location with great breakfast. Room is dates but got everything yoy need with comfortable bed. Unfortunately really noisy, the loud pub music is a killer for me. Avoid if you want a peace and quiet sleep

Although the hotel is very very old, I’ve never knew floorboards to creak so much in all my time. The room above were walking around to the early hours (which is perfectly fine) but the creaking was just something else. Not small creaks, but very very loud. Hotel was lovely - but for a peaceful nights sleep you may find this hard.

Excellent location, less than 10 minute walk from station and very central for shops. My room was not overlooking main street, no noise at all from outside, even though Friday night and room was lovely and warm with adjustable radiator. Bed comfy and bathroom modern with lovely shower. Nice tea and coffee tray with hot chocolate and biscuits. Lovely breakfast with delicious pastries, yoghurt, cut and whole fruit, muesli and some mini cereal boxes. Tea selection they even had Darjeeling and the coffee was lovely. Hot breakfast to order. Really tasty. Breakfast was run by Janice who was marvellous. Reception was a bit hit and miss. At check-in the couple in front and the group behind were offered a glass of sherry but I wasn't which felt rude. Also I was told when checking in the absolute earliest I could have breakfast on Sunday was 8am, even though I said I would have to catch a later train to do this. However, the wonderful Janice said I COULD have come earlier for the buffet part of breakfast, especially as she had others doing this that morning! I was checked out at Reception by the same lady who'd checked me in, perfectly pleasant but all she asked me was would I like a receipt and not whether I'd had a nice stay so probably some improvement could be made on customer service. Overall, I would stay again if price was competitive.

Our stay was wonderful. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed an excellent breakfast buffet in the Royalist restaurant each morning of our stay. We stayed in the Princess Charlotte suite. It is a beautiful room, spacious and comfortable.

Check in, comfort,location food all good but hotel sadly falls short on apparent shortage of staff.Breakfast very good but disappointing restaurant menu,was expecting something more interesting than burger or fish and chips for dinner. Housekeeping leaves a lot to be desired. Room not serviced at all one day and only received a call after requesting tea bags at 3.30pm on another. Public rooms very tired and in need of decorating or at least deep cleaning of chairs and sofas.

I woke to have no Electricity in my room called reception for over 45 mins, with no one answering. The hotel said that they had 6 rooms loose power due to a surge from out side and that they couldn't answer why the night porter didn't answer the phone. I had to get ready with for work with my light of my mobile phone. They didn't want to give me any type of refund as they said it was nothing to do with them, but the rest of the hotel except the my room and 5 others lost power. Very poor customer service and would not recomment this hotel to any one!!!

What has made this beautiful historic place so wonderful is the staff.They have made our stay so very enjoyable. They have gone above and beyond with the quality of service we received. We will be back and if you haven't been to the Prince Rupert Hotel , we highly recommend that you do if you want a first class experience.

A traditional hotel with great character which provided everything I needed for four nights stay, with the friendliest and most professional staff I have ever come across. Nothing was too much trouble. Food was of an excellent standard and the hotel was sited close to places of interest. I would love to return

What didn't go well? Staff. So basically, this hotel doesn't condone taking a second person to your room if you've booked single occupancy. Really?! They actually clocked me coming back with my partner and phoned the room 20mins later to say she had to leave(!!). When asked to give me the price for her to stay, they took a whole minute to work it out. As if the phone call was not about a solution other than kicking her out - the extra charge was £65 on top of the original £95. My partner wasn't staying, and this was explained, but I was told she had to leave the premises immediately. We left. No refund offered, sad. Bye bye Prince Rupert.

I’m so well looked after by Reception staff. I have mobility difficulties and they have gone out of their way to help. They remember my name and hand over my correct room key without me even asking for it. Fab hotel.

The location is ideal for many of the attractions in shrewsbury and only a short walk from the railway station. A very good breakfast and we had an excellent evening meal.Would certainly stay again.

Superb location, no need for a car, stroll to the river and all the amenities Shrewsbury has to offer. A grand old building with all the splendour of a bygone era. The antidote to the modern chains of rabbit hutches. A large foyer with a relaxed vibe. a grand hall of a restaurant with comfortable seating. Suits of Armour round off the interior decor. Staff are all friendly and helpful.

The staff were very helpful. The food was excellent and good value. The beroom was ver comfortable. So convenient for the shops as well.

Very nice period hotel within easy walking distance from the train station. Situated in the town centre so ideal for exploring the town.

Firstly I'll start by saying the building is really lovely and historic, good location, desk staff on entering polite and friendly, even offering a friendly free sherry, so first impresions were good, however it went downhill from there sadly. The room we had (103) the door handle needed replacing as it was wobbling around and didnt look secure, halls were very tired, paint marked, inside the room the walls cracked and marked and the windows had flowers growing through the cracks and weeds inside the room as they hardly opened so it was so stuffy. The room looks onto the street which is very very noisy, coupled with the paper thin walls and staff banging about first thing, and fire alarm going off at 5am for a few seconds, we hadly slept. Bed is small, shower head needed a scrub and wouldnt stay on an angle, the place needs an update. First day breakfast was probably the worst I had encountered in my travels, over cooked hard bacon, dense sausage, sparse very pale watery eggs and cheap tasting ingredients. Nothing but packets for cereals and certainly nothing worth going back for the next day. However as we had trouble as the later desk clerk (lady) was stressing on the 2nd night as we hadnt prebooked our breakfast slot we were made to feel like bad children and threatened with no meal at all despite paying over £200 a night. We convinced her to book us in but she made us feel crap. Second breakfast was marginally better but they messed up the order. We wouldnt return.

This is a nice Hotel ,in a great spot and we stayed in a smallish room 304 with a great balcony . The desk staff and bar staff were fine .However the hotel has a number of small faults that could easily be put right .1 Show head is blocked, Bathroom sink tap plumbed wrong way round , TV is on wall to side of bed so difficult to see when there is space on the wall directly in front of bed Had to wait 10 ~ 15 minutes before anyone asked what we would like to drink with breakfast . Wife has scrambled eggs on toast and could not eat scrambled eggs to watery , my breakfast was fine . All of these point are easy fixed and I would recommend you stay there .

Wonderful, exceptional breakfast, service and bathroom

Upgraded to deluxe room on arrival, albeit in a modern part of the hotel. Staff helpful and friendly. Breakfast perfectly adequate if unexceptional. Can't rate the restaurant as it was closed on the day we arrived (Mondays) and since we were the only booking on the next night, so not viable to open the kitchen for just two covers, we were asked to eat elsewhere.

Breakfast was fantastic, perfect poached eggs. Room was clean and welcoming. Very friendly helpful staff. Fantastic location right in town. 1 minute to the high Street.

Car park too far away. Evening meal was good but breakfast quite poor.

No mention any where in publicity that the restaurant is not open on Sunday and monday's. We had to go out in the rain to find a restaurant nearby.
